Hi! I really love stormbreak and all of your characterizations, daemon in particular. I was wondering if would be alright to base the characterization of daemon in one of my fics off yours if I credit you? I’ve only just started writing and idk when/if I’ll publish on ao3 but I wanted to ask.
Hi! My Daemon is a very particular mishmash of canon, fanon, and headcanon and I have to say I'm quite fond of him. I'm glad others are, too!
As long as an author links to my work on Ao3 using the "inspired by" feature, I am 100% okay with them using my characterizations, premises, headcanons, backstories, and worldbuilding!
If you like the way I write Daemon, or you like the backstories I've written for the dragons, or you want to recycle my arranged marriage idea but sideways or with different characters, or you want to use the Valyrian mythology I've created, you're absolutely welcome (and encouraged!!) to do so. Please specifically use the "inspired by" link if you do, because then I'm able to see it and it isn't just floating around out there without my knowledge. It'll boost your traffic too, so it's mutually beneficial! The link is what makes the difference between plagiarizing and taking inspiration, in my eyes.
The following is a little tutorial of how to use the "inspired by" feature on Ao3. When you're posting a new work, there will be a section called "Associations." It'll look like this:
Tumblr media
You'll want to check the box indicated by the red arrow, the one that says "This work is a remix, a translation, or was inspired by another work." Once you do that, a menu will pop up, which will look like this:
Tumblr media
Then, you'll paste the URL to Stormbreak (AKA this link) in the top line labeled "URL." You don't need to touch any of the other boxes. Since Stormbreak is also on Ao3, the site will be able to find all the info it needs just from that URL.
After that, you're done! You can continue posting your fic as normal. Once you do, I'll be able to see it on my own dashboard. And so will readers! At the beginning of your fic, readers will see the following link (this is just an example from a fic with existing linked inspiration works):
Tumblr media
If readers click that, they'll be routed to Stormbreak. So if they like your fic and are curious to check mine out, they can easily find it. And the reverse is also true- so you'll likely pull some interested Stormbreak readers your way! At the beginning of Stormbreak, readers will see this little note:
Tumblr media
And in Stormbreak's end notes, they'll find a link to your fic and your Ao3 username under a note like the following example:
Tumblr media
The "inspired by" feature on Ao3 is absolutely one of my favorites. There's nothing like reading a fic and thinking "I want a million AUs of this" or "I want a million different fics with this one specific headcanon or bit of lore" and then being able to find those exact fics under the "inspired by" section. Besides, I'm happy if other people can make use of the little tidbits of Stormbreak fanon that I've spent so much time (way too much time) creating. :)
Hope this helps!

Does anyone have a photo of that handout of how to interpret different untranslatable small ancient Greek words like μην? It was written in a humorous tone and I know I've seen it on tumblr before but can't find it. I wanted to send it to a professor I know who teaches Greek.
Edit: I have it! Behold, the perfect translation guide.

Ok but like. What the fuck is there to do on the internet anymore?
Idk when I was younger, you could just go and go and find exciting new websites full of whatever cool things you wanted to explore. An overabundance of ways to occupy your time online.
Now, it's just... Social media. That's it. Social media and news sites. And I'm tired of social media and I'm tired of the news.
Am I just like completely inept at finding new things or has the internet just fallen apart that much with the problems of SEO and web 3.0 turning everything into a same-site prison?

Escape Velocity Chapter 1
Hello! I've had some time to decompress after the behemoth that was Stormbreak and am ready to dig my teeth into a new fic. Introducing Escape Velocity, an Obikin Canon Divergence AU where Anakin and Obi-Wan are... honestly not that much more insane about each other than in canon but that's still pretty damn insane okay. Most of the fic will take place under the Empire, but we're starting off at the beginning of the prequels and will proceed from there.
In this first chapter, Anakin and Obi-Wan meet as they did for the first time in The Phantom Menace. Only Qui-Gon kind of forgets to reassure Anakin that Jedi Masters aren't slave masters and Jedi Padawans aren't slaves. Anakin interprets his first impressions of Obi-Wan accordingly, and gets surprisingly far along before anyone corrects him.
Hope you enjoy!

Also, sometimes authors don't have other works or bookmarks. In that case, you can look at which other users bookmarked the original fic you liked, and repeat that process with those users' bookmarks! It's a bit less reliable, but it's still an indication that they probably have similar tastes to you.
You can also try searching the author or the work on sites like Tumblr or Twitter to see if anyone's put it on any rec lists. This mostly works for more popular Ao3 content, but still. Sometimes people will have compiled a huge list of that very trope you love, and the original fic's just one of many that you can now check out!

there's also something to be said about how a lot of fandom spaces consist mostly of women and trans/non-binary folks, and how the time we put into hobbies is pretty consistently ridiculed. like cis men are out there trashing entire cities bc they have big emotions about a football game, i KNOW they aren't out here tryna make fun of anyone for being too into something.
sorry to keep harping but the thing is. like. people pretty much universally have profoundly complex and richly textured lives outside of the internet. like everyone you'll ever meet will have their share of complicated relationships, personal struggles, identity issues, et cetera. and these people will likely have deep inner lives and senses of self that an outsider is not easily privy to yk. but then you get all these Posters with a superiority complex who log into the fandom blogging website, see a fandom blogger blogging about fandom, and for some reason forget that other human beings have a rich inner world and assume that this little niche interest site somehow represents the totality of the fandom blogger's life and that they can deduce some sort of damning portrait of a Life Consumed by Media from the fact that they sometimes blog about fandom on the fandom blogging website. and then they make stupid ass posts like the aforementioned. it's so pretentious and self important and mean spirited with zero substance. Banished to the salt mines for 10000 years

AO3 Etiquette
It would seem a whole new kind of AO3 reader/writer is emerging and it is becoming clear not everyone quite understands how the website community works. Here is some basic guidance on how most people expect you to go about using AO3 to keep this a fun community archive that funtions correctly:
Kudos is for when the story was interesting enough to make you finish reading. If it sucked or was badly written, you probably left. If you finished - you kudos.
If you liked it, you should comment. It can be long and detailed or a literal keysmash. Writers don't care, we just love comments.
No critisism unless the author has specifically asked or agreed to hear it. Even constructive critisism is a no-no unless an author note tells you it's okay. Many people write as a fun hobby or a way to cope with, among other things, insecurity. Don't ruin that for them.
Do not comment to ask the author to write/update something else. It's tacky and off-putting and will probably have the opposite effect than the one you want.
There is no algorithm, it's an archive. Use the search and filter function to add/remove the pairings/characters/tropes etc. you want to read about and it will find you the fics that fit the bill.
For this to work, writers must tag and rate stories. This avoids readers finding the wrong things and missing the stuff they want. I don't care how cringy that trope is in your eyes - it gets tagged.
Character A/Character B means a ROMANTIC or SEXUAL relationship of some kind. Character A&Character B is PLANTONIC, like friendship or family.
Nothing is banned. This is an implicit rule because banning one thing is a slipperly slope to banning another and another, until nothing is allowed anymore. Do not expect anyone to censor for you. Because of the tags system, you are responsible for your own reading experience.
People can create new chapters and sequels/fic series any time after they "complete" a story. So it's considered perfectly normal to subscribe, even to a finished story. You can even subscribe to the author instead just to cover your bases.
Do not repost stories or change the publishing date without an extremely good reason (like a complete top to bottom rewrite). It's an archive, not social media. No one cares what's the most recent, only what fits their tag needs.
Avoid deleting a story you wrote if you hate it - orphan it so others can still enjoy it, without it being connected to you anymore.
This is a creative fanfiction archive. No essays on your insights or theories please. There are other places for that.
I KNOW there's plenty more I missed but I'm trying to cover most of the basics that people seem to be struggling with.
I invite anyone to add to this, but please explain, don't berate.

Tumblr media
Our Artists and Authors have spent many months pouring their hearts and souls into their creations. Each post is a small piece of themselves that they present to you with the hopes that you will love and enjoy it. We understand that sometimes one of those creations may not be to your taste, but we are asking that you please refrain from leaving negative feedback in response to our masterposts and promo, be it in a text response or in tags. This can be absolutely crushing for a creator to see this kind of feedback on a post that is meant to be a celebration of their achievement.
We ask that you leave feedback directly on Ao3 (if the author/artist has requested it) or create your own review posts so that the creators are not directly tagged in it.
If we continue to see these type of interactions with our masterposts, we will begin the process of blocking users so that they cannot interact with our posts. This is not something we would like to do, but we are dedicated to protecting our creators and fostering a positive environment for them to grow and flourish.

Tumblr media
Fanfolks today need to remember how important The Premise was.
Y'all have heard of The Premise, right?
See, historically there have always been people who saw an extra layer of gayness on certain pairs of fictional people (you just thought of several), and people Back Then even wrote their own fanfic (or as they were called at the time, "pastiches"), but the first widespread queer fanwork to really define the fanfiction genre was KIRK AND SPOCK. Kirk/Spock. K/S. The very first slashfics.
Why this work was vastly, overwhelmingly written by straight women is a discussion for another time, but it was, so that's the main perspective I'm gonna consider here.
Tumblr media
How do you - a statistically middle-class, 30+, stay-at-home wife and mother - how do you write slashfic ao3-style in the 1960's before the internet?
Carefully.
Through letters with friends, phone calls, pen pals, and sometimes - sometimes - clandestine meetings of small groups. Whole novels were written communally, round-robin style, by sending typed or handwritten additions chapter by chapter to each other. These were all underground, some deep underground; even the early Trekkie fanzines of the time wouldn't touch them.
And keep in mind, few of these stories were explicitly even sexual! But they were all about a very, very close relationship between two men. In the 1960's.
Guess how cool everyone else was about this.
Actually, for their part, Gene Rodenberry and the other writers were fine with it, saying that they had deliberately written the characters to be two halves of a whole, and if you wanna read it that way, yeah sure, go right ahead. Shatner and Nimoy took it all in good humor, and seemingly still do, each guy basically gesturing to the other and chuckling "I mean, who wouldn't?"
But elsewhere there was vicious backlash against The Premise, and not just within the fandom. This was still at a time in the US and UK when various "sodomy" and "decency" laws made no distinction between homosexual sex acts and just, like, directly lighting another man's cigarette with your cigarette in public. (That, sadly, is not a fucking joke.)
It was probably the closest some suburban cishet women came to understanding the pain of being in the closet. They had to protect this secret from their friends and family at all cost. There were cases of divorces where women lost custody of their children because their writing had come to light.
Tumblr media
Can you imagine having such a burning desire to write for your OTP that you were willing to lose everything over it? Even if you were never caught, you still had to be willing to wait weeks, months, to receive a letter in the mail that you had to carefully intercept, read in secret, and then add your own chapter t, also in secret, and then send off, perhaps never to be seen again.
These people were goddamn heroes, and they laid the foundation for the world we live in today. A world where we can read, write, comment on, or share - in a matter of seconds! - literature about two background characters from two different franchises enjoying a really specific kink involving vacuums or something. And that's objectively amazing.
Raise a toast to our fanfiction elders, who simped in the darkness so we could simp in the light of day.
