Osamu has the best fitting name, and nothing can't change my mind.
This conclusion came up after I did a little research about Osamu's name in Japanese.
The Kanji of "Osamu" is 修 - which can imply many different meanings, such as fix, repair, or the pursuit of knowledge, discipline etc. That's the thing about Kanji, a word can have more than one implication but as you see, all of the meanings are kinda connected.
But, while those implications also somewhat go along with Osamu's own character, the reason why I think he has the most fitting name is another.
You see, while in English, "Osamu" 修 translates to "fix", which isn't wrong btw, the fixing process it implied is not simply to recover a thing to its former state, but a bit emphasizes on improve something once broken (at least that's how I understand).
To put it into words, I think the best phrase to describe it is "learn from your mistakes to become better", which is basically Osamu's whole character development. And yes, with such a great message, "Osamu" is while a common name for Japanese boys. Even in the anime-manga community, many characters share the similar name but no one has struck me like WT Osamu's case.
Just, whenever I think about our Osamu, it's touched my heart to think how his parents (or rather Ashihara-sensei) named him, maybe with a thought process as "never be scared of making mistakes, the important thing is that you can learn and grow from them". It resonates strongly with me because our Osamu is living his life exactly with the same momento.
Watching World Trigger is such a beautiful journey and while we have four main characters (I love them all), with the story being told from Osamu's view, it's just different. Because he has grown the most between the cast. We watched him fumbled on mistakes once and never repeated it again. In fact, he just kept surpassing everyone's expectations.
Because World Trigger isn't very popular (ok, it's underrated) outside of Japan, I followed a lot of discussion in Japanese fandom, which wasn't easy for sure as I had to used auto-translate, but was a great motivation to learn Japanese anw. The point is, for some reasons, one of the most common phrases that Osamu stan used is "Am I the only one who see his strength?" and yeah, it spoke a lot about Osamu's character. Y'know, it became a joke because there were posts that collect all those comments and it's downright ridiculous when nearly hundreds comments had that phrases. Oh, the irony - hundreds vs. the only one.
It's a bit off topic, but I was trying to say that, what admirable about Osamu isn't an extraordinary strength - at least not about forces, but how he adapts and changes. How he always tries to become a better version of himself. Actually, it's quite the World Trigger's signature as all the characters (the Border agents) are diligent and trying their best, too. Just, Osamu seems to represent that ideal the best.
Kudos to Ashihara-sensei for creating such a detailed world, and maybe I am reading too much into his motives, but if not, his dedication to a character design is S-rank quality (only because the highest class in Border is S-rank lol).
P/s: Osamu's family name - Mikumo 三雲 literally means "three clouds" word by word, and well, it doesn't count as common surname for sure (pun intended). But again, family names in Japan can be made up easily so quite a huge number of them exist.

Check out my new fic to celebrate Osamu's birthday 👇
https://archiveofourown.org/works/65861236
It's called "5 times people defended Mikumo and 1 time he did it himself", which basically I'm simping over Osami through other World Trigger characters' words.

#spoileralert!!!
Tumblr media
First, World Trigger just updated chapter 250 and 251 on MangaPlus if you didn't know.
My strongest feeling after finished these chapters is they feel shorter than the last ones, as they are about small talks (not sure if this the right word) between agents.
But it's never boring to see how the characters react to the special assignment. Yuba finally gets to shine, and Arafune is so underrated. Ikoma never fails to make me laugh, and Suwa leading the team is as good as always. Taichi is a genius, no one can't tell me otherwise, his mind is brilliant in his own way. This makes me believe that there is no such thing as a comedy relief character in World Trigger, at least in Border, every agents are the walking definition of being capable and humorous at the same time.
Shout out for the screen time of Usami and Konami!!! The way they believe in Osamu's ability is peak, and Konami imitating Hyuse is such a mood.
Osamu, my love, the shining star in those chapters, again makes me surprised. He's such a complicated character, but Ashihara-sensei always does a god work in showing Osamu's strength. The way Osamu probably weighting the pros and cons of breaking or fixing the door wasn't exactly shown on the manga, but through Usami's words, I imagine it just fine. Osamu's flexibility is one of his best quality I guess. He doesn't stick to a strategy just because it has the higher point, but he chooses the lesser one with the vision on the overall earning points in the process. That's my Osamu for you!!!
And you know what, the new development of Shiki Sayako's side effect makes me yell and laugh in delight. Because, you see, in my latest update on my World Trigger fic, I had done a research in each agent's Trion stat. And imagining my surprise when I saw Sayako's Trion was a 7 even though she's an operator (operators have average lower Trion stat as it doesn't affect their ability).
If you aren't familiar with Border's Trion stat, then let me tell you something:
Jin - future foresee side effect
Murakami - enhancing learning ability
Kageura - empathy side effect (can feel people's emotions towards him)
All of them have a 7 Trion stat too! And Osamu, our storytelling angel, only has a 2, although he is a exceptional case. While Kuga, the Shonen protagonist, also has a 7 Trion stat.
Yeah, so I was honestly wondering if Ashihara-sensei has any hidden motives when putting those stats out, but I was leaning on how it emphasizes that Sayako chose to become an operator because she loved its job and wanted to avoid people.
And you all know the outcome. Literally just a few days later, at least when the memories are still fresh in my mind, new chapters came out with she having a side effect!? It's like all foreshadow before.
P/s: In case you forgot, side effects suppose to be the rare enhancing ability of individuals with high Trion stat, so 7 must be counted as a high amount of Trion. Not all people with high Trion have side effect though, so it is super rare and important.

👉 Check out my new update on the series World Trigger Reaction - A Temporal Access to the Future.
Fun fact:
Karasuma's nick name is Torimaru. Because his name "Karasu" means raven or bird (Tori).
If you were a fan of Haikyuu!, you might remember once time the series the other school also mistakes Karasuno as Torino lol.
Karasuma was a member of Tachikawa squad before transfered to Tamakoma. Rumor said it was because the force of his fan in the Border headquarters were getting out of hand.
(Source: World Trigger Q&A)
Karasuma is also one of the few characters that Ashihara Daisuke sensei confirms as a ikeman. He is also aware of this, as his first introduction is "I'm the scruffy hottie. Nice to meet you."

#spoileralert!
Just rereaded chapter 248 of World Trigger again because there was no update this month and I came to a new realization about Osamu.
It was Hyuse's "...Osamu and his ilk are almost too unique" and Mikumo's "Think up a bunch of cheese tactics to annoy the enemy into submission!" when they were explaining why Rokurō could be a good instructor in the future.
In the last time I only focused on the Rokurō's strength, Hyuse's explanation because I have been wondering that question too! But this time this sentence hit me hard as I realized Osamu has come a long way to this day. And the captain of number #2 B-rank squad is not just an ordinary person.
From the start of the anime, Mikumo was sort of an annoying character who was weak with a hero complex. If it were Kuga, who had the strength, wanted to save people, it might be a more lovable character design. But in an action series, being weak CAN BE considered as A CRIME. It's not hard to find those old comments about how frustrated they felt when watching Osamu.
My point is, my first impression of Osamu is only slightly better than those comments, but that because I was recommended strongly by my friend and not because I thought Osamu would have one of the best development. I actually quite like Osamu at the beginning too, because I'm weak for hero-type character.
But now thinking back, Osamu is a weird one at the beginning. He didn't save people because he thought they need saving, but more because he thought that something he should do. Other than that, he seems like all the typical hero characters with his selflessness and humble nature.
But in the Aftokrator Arcs? That's when I knew I was wrong about my assumptions. Apart from how crazy his action was, y'know risking his life to protect a FAKE cube, to achieve his goal of saving Chika. This is another worm I would love to dwell in on another post. I was shell-shocked to know Osamu had tried to break in the Border with pliers because he didn't satisfy with his result. FOR WHAT? What are you even gonna do? Negotiating with the higher-ups?
There are actually many theories about what Osamu did, because as we all know, he DID become a member. But that's aside, I had the secondhand embarrassment when I watched what he did on the press conference. All of this is NOT what I expected about Osamu!!! It's exactly like a comment I saw on YT "He knew the rules, it's just to him his rules come first". And while it's completely far from I expected, somehow I didn't feel a single bit out of character, that's just the author's talent.
And in the Rank War Arcs, Osamu did bring his role as a strategy character to a new high-level if you thought about what their team had achieved. Even though Tamakoma-2 was nothing like a typical newbie squad, but still Osamu's effort is nothing to sneeze at. But do you know what's even better? That's us, the readers, normally don't feel like Osamu is that extraordinary or a super talented individual.
Until Hyuse pointed out how not everyone could repeat Osamu's actions, I always believed Osamu is a character who can be considered as normal type, except he also has good tactic-thinking. I mean, woah, completely caught me off. It was because the author had described Osamu's thinking process in detailed, there were no sudden buff-up training arcs, only hard work and determination, no friendship power, except you count Osamu's motivation.
And considering how Osamu had no exceptional background, his development is more impressive. He came from a weak character who would receive more critics than praises, to an outstanding character. He's not an overpowered opponent but the type if you left him alone, he would cause serious damage to your team.
Now the closed-environment phrase in manga Osamu is cooking hard, showing what he had learned in their squad's resuls. And better yet, his tricks always strive as a one-time trick, or even something anyone can come up with. But there is Hyuse, or rather the author, confirm that's no. Not everyone could continuously come up with effective strategies like Osamu. That was his own fighting way. And the developing process was so convincing that I, myself, didn't realize how far he had gone.
That's my thoughts from exactly a manga panels lol.

So in chapter 2, I introduced a new element in my fic - question time!!! Believe me, it doesn't mean to make the characters suffer, but to let's my fangirl's side for Osamu run wild lol.
Anw, the thing is, this exercise, using 25 words to describe something, I actually was inspired by the manga Youkai Gakkou no Sensei Hajime! (Or First Teacher at the Monster High School?). There was a scene when Haru, the protagonist, the teacher, was checking his students' homeworks and there was a similar homework. But his students didn't it lol.
But that made me think there must be literature exercises like that in Japan, so I put it here.

Okay, this one is a little embarrassing but the author will explain what she was trying to do in this case.
So y'all see the comment from Kikuchihara at the bottom of the photo, right? I use the sentence "that one would be a pain to deal with" for two meanings at the same time!
You see, first meaning is obviously to say that it will be difficult to fight with a foe who has lie detector ability. But the second meaning is this side effect - lie detector, is actually a pain for the USER to deal with too. Imagine how you will feel when you can see through lies from everyone, the ones who you thought you could trust and so on.
Yep, I wrote this when I thought about Kikuchihara, who also has trouble with his side effect, who can hear all things people say, even the nasty ones. So I thought Kikuchihara first reaction to Kuga's SE is someone also has it bad like me. But of course with his character, he would never say that straight forward, so it's a two meaning sentence.
Also, if you find this interesting, then here the link to my fic, it's on the chapter 2:

Not me dying while describing a fight. Why did I chose to write a reaction fic about World Trigger again? This packs with combats and so on 😭
So is it alright that I do it like:
[Mikumo charges in. He fights. He loses. Then his friends charges in, saves him and wins.]
Nah, I will figure something out but this at least doesn't seems that bad 😭

Asking for World Trigger researchers. I'm always amazed by how each character has a completely different chain of relationships with other characters of the show.
I saw this comment once, and I 100℅ agree with it "There are probably 200 Daisuke Ashihara working together, and each of them devoted for one character of the show". That's the only reasonable explanation for the series anyway.
So since I decided to write a WT fanfic, I struggle to keep up with the relationship between characters, like how they call each other. For example, Miwa's squad: the first episode Yoneya called Miwa by his first name, Shūji. But I recalled in the latest manga chapters, they called Kodera by his surname, Kodera?
Yep, I was lost in this kind of process while making my own work. If anyone can help me with this, and not just about Miwa's squad I will forever be grateful.

So this is the reason why I create this account. My first public work on AO3.
The fandom is World Trigger, it has anime adoption and an on-going manga. And for the content, it's a reaction fic, as almost all the characters in the show are forced to sit back and watch their own show. This is my favorite genre btw.
I first started this fic only to share my opinion about Osamu, one of the protagonists, and my bias in the series, and now that doesn't change. So the fic, despite all the content, is actually a heavy-bias praising of a fangirl for her idol. Oh yeah, I actually consider Osamu as my idol in someway.
Anyway, the fic only has two chapters for now, and lots of mistakes as my beta's existence is similar to Osamu's rule-obedience - everyone thinks it exists but it's actually not. But I'm telling you, Mikumo Osamu's fans, to read it, and high with me lol.
