The year is 2015 and the employees of Metro-General Hospital are concerned. The infamous Dr. Strange has been quiet, withdrawn, and exhausted. He disappears at odd times, reappears with odd injuries, and displays several worrying trauma signs. There’s also a mysterious person he keeps in contact with but doesn’t let anyone meet. They don’t like Stephen, but they respect him, and this can’t go on.

On the other side of the equation, Stephen and Tony woke up in the past after failing to defeat Thanos. They have a second chance, but have to work discreetly. Tony works on advancing Earth’s technology and gathering allies of the political and enhanced variety, while Stephen works on continuing his training and gathering allies of the magical variety. They’re both exhausted and Stephen is injured most days from battles, but they’re making progress. If only his co-workers weren’t so nosy.

I really like the idea of all Sorcerer Supremes (or those with the potential to become one) ultimately ending up as being direct descendents of Agamotto himself. As in, if you tried, had the time and had the resources, you could actually trace them back to the first Sorcerer Supreme. There’s no real explanation as to why it is such a common trait. Some speculate that it makes sense: Agamotto’s relics respond to his blood and they are the closest ties to him in the living world. Others are doubtful. Anyone could be Sorcerer Supreme. There’s been many non-descendants that have stepped in as Sorcerer Supreme in their own right throughout the order’s long history and they fulfilled their duties just as well as Agamotto’s descendants have in the past. Magic is not privy to those who are more “pure-blood”. That’s not a thing. There are some descendants who have no affinity for magic and there is no official hierarchy in Kamar-Taj, but it is a detail that is taken into consideration. Some consider it an irrelevant attribute. Others believe it to be a good indicator of one’s potential.

Nevertheless, all known family lines traditionally and typically lie close to Nepal and are very heavily monitored. Births and children are anticipated accordingly and everyone usually has plenty of time to prepare for another addition to Agamotto’s long list of descendants and what it could mean for the order.

So imagine the shock one early morning in the 70s, with the elders, masters, and TAO herself literally stumbling over their own feet upon sensing the sharp spike in magical activity Stephen’s birth caused, like a punch to the gut, halfway across the world. Another bloodline of Agamotto’s-

Consider Stephen’s first true introduction to the West is when he is allowed to be the contact person between the newly spawned Avengers and Kamar-Taj.

He looks American. But he very much isn’t at the same time. His customs are very South Asian, his accent matches, and even though people from various nationalities have had a hand in rearing him, he is distinctly Nepali. Not at all a Nebraska farm boy, despite what his birth certificate says. It’s eerie, working with a man who was essentially kidnapped from birth by the order he now represents. Even more so as time passes and they realize Stephen is well aware of his origins and refuses to talk about it is somehow not bothered by it.

On the other hand, Clint and Thor have a fucking field day introducing this sweet summer child to a variety of things from food to the most cutting edge technology. Thor is especially joyful to have Stephen working with them. He has a buddy to try things with now and insists on dragging him to shops and eateries around New York. The first time the two tried McDonalds they ended up getting violently sick and ended up binging the first five seasons of Seinfeld and all of the Star Wars saga while they recovered.

Natasha and Steve feel a quiet sense of camaraderie with him, as people who were displaced from their places and times of birth and have no way of going back. Seeing Stephen so willing to shoulder the responsibility of essentially governing an entire secret society lends them a bit of strength to soldier on. At the same time they feel some sadness for him because he just doesn’t question it. He understands sacrifice and the concept of things being out of one’s control, just as much as they do.

Tony and Bruce enjoy having him in the lab. His education is almost entirely magic-related, so he eats up everything that they do and say, whether it is engineering or physics but MAN HE JUST SOAKS UP MEDICINE AND PHYSIOLOGY IT IS ALMOST SCARY. He’s quick to draw correct conclusions and even ends up accidentally solving a couple of the bumps they hit in their research himself. Bruce in particular is lowkey angry on Stephen’s behalf. He’s ridiculously intelligent and he thinks a lot about all the scientific contributions the world was deprived from because he was educated at Kamar-Taj rather than at academic institutions.

He does little things like remove his shoes at the door, he sits with his legs crossed even while in a regular western chair (often he doesn’t use chairs at all), he tends to forgo utensils and prefers eating with his fingers, wakes at the ass-crack of dawn (less Nepali and just KT custom tbh), he likes his food stupid spicy and eats while it is still very hot (“Are you okay?!?” *Stephen literally crying while shoveling mouthfuls of still-boiling soup into his mouth* “…Yes?”) and Tony has a fucking blast throwing obscure memes and references his way. Stephen pretends he doesn’t understand what he’s saying for years and Tony is rightfully aghast when Peter Parker comes along and the whole charade falls apart.

He also takes a page from TAO and insists on brewing tea when things get tense.

He is particularly good at that last one.

LMAO Headcanon that Stephen singlehandedly prevented the civil war schism by channeling some of the authority his surrogate mother wields. The Avengers were sweating bullets watching as Levi floated him around the living room and he just started locking doors with a placid little smile on his face. The ten minutes it took him to cheerfully brew tea and offer each some honey with their drink were among the most terrifying moments of their lives.

Anyway, as our baby event grows, this year we decided to make one significant change: instead of lasting a whole month, the event is set during the last 2 weeks of October.

FAQ & rules 2024

1. What must be included in the content of a filled prompt?

Stephen Strange (any version of him: film, TV, or comics etc.) must be either the main or co-main character. Otherwise, anything goes!

2. Can I still take part in the event even if I ship Stephen with someone?

Well, that can be a bit tricky, but generally — yes, you can. We’d prefer to not having Stephen or the other character(s) being there for the sole purpose of shipping, but we’re not against shipping during the event, as long as it all resolves to showing the story or whatever you come up with, that regardless of the dynamic or chosen relationship (platonic, romantic, familial etc.), in the end, it is about Doctor Stephen Strange.

An established relationship, first meeting, or getting together could be allowed if shipping isn’t the driving force behind writing a prompt (yes, of course you can be wanting to have them together, but the thing is — dig harder. Romantic content is a given within the fandom, but the fandom also needs General content! Or/and especially good whumping or angst, or a detective story, an unique AU etc. There are a lot of interesting prompts, so it’s a very good opportunity to try something new or different.

3. What must be included in the tags of posts?

Use the hashtag #strangehalloween2024. Add either into description or a tag the prompts you use (or both). On Tumblr, please include additional tags for NSFW (or NSFT meaning Not Safe For Tumblr) and common triggers (see AO3 for examples). The triggers apply to SFW works if necessary.

4. When can I post my prompt fill(s)?

In the spirit of the theme, these should be posted between 18–31 October 2024. Any strict rules don’t really exist, but we'd prefer if you post prompts the day they were chosen to be posted, e.g. one of the prompts from Saturday 26 October (Screams | Sacrifice | Poison) on said Saturday or after it if you're late, but not eatlier (not on Oct. 20). Don’t worry if you won’t be able to fulfil something on time, you can always participate even if fashionably late. We’d still add it to the ao3 collection or reblog on Tumblr if we see it.

5. Where on the discord server do I post my submissions?

In our gallery for the event in #strange-halloween. It’s for submitting your finished works. Even if it's fanfiction or something that would usually go into art channels, this event is an exception.

Reminder: said channel is not for casual talking, not even about the event, there’s a separate thread within the channel for that.

If your work happens to be NSFW, the usual rules apply: post those into NSFW channels. But if you want, you can write a message in #strange-halloween channel to tell others that you have created something, and point to the appropriate channel.

6. What medium can I use?

Anything! Written prose, poetry, gifsets, mood boards, artwork, playlists, you can even cook or bake something! Make a figurine, crochet something, do a scrapbooking thing, do a cosplay, make a board game, or a quiz. An app for a phone. A game, a collage. Anything goes. All it has to do is to follow the main rule of the event — being about Stephen Strange. No Stephen? No contribution in this one, sorry. So, all is acceptable as a prompt fill. It's all about Stephen Strange in any form he comes in.

7. Can I combine different prompts into one submission (e.g.: Wednesday 23 October Spell book | Horns | “Stay still, or I’ll chop your hand off!” + an earlier/later one) ?

Sure!

8. There are 3 prompts per day. Do I have to do it all?

No. You can do whichever one you want. But if you want to do all no one would be stopping you.

9. Can I use your prompt list with other prompt lists/bingo cards?

Absolutely! Combine it with any other event you'd like to do.

10. Are there any limits to how many prompts I can use/have to use?

Nope! Participate with one or all 42 items! Do as much as you'd like!

11. I’m a bit confused about some prompts; what are the brackets for?

The prompts that have a word in the brackets or also a slash within are the ones where you can be a bit creative (and cheat the system to have more prompts if you try enough), e.g.:

Monday 28 Oct — there's Buried as a prompt. You can use just that word or include the one in the brackets to have Buried alive. Technically, you could also try a different way and get rid of the first one and only have Alive.

Wednesday 30 Oct — we have the prompt Pumpkin so either use this singular word or use the suggested ones to get a Pumpkin Spice Latte, or another option which is Pumpkin Carving!

So, you can either completely omit the additionally suggested words or not. Have fun!

12. I’m not a native English speaker, can I make something in my native language or the one I'm trying to learn?

Of course, there are no limitations. The more, the merrier! Any contribution is valid.

A Different Homecoming

It took effort not to grab Stephen’s hand—to make sure he was still there—as Tony stepped off of the plane. He didn’t, didn’t even look back as he strode forward to where Pepper and Happy stood beside the car, the sun too warm where it beat down on him.

He tried for a grin, even as he knew the expression was a swing and a miss as he took in Pepper in front of him, her eyes red, her hair just a little less put together than normal, her appearance just a little worn. “Your eyes are red. A few tears for your long lost boss?”

Pepper tried for her own smile, but it was just as weak as he suspected his own had been. “Tears of joy. I hate job hunting.”

“Yeah, well vacation’s over.” He looked back at Stephen. He looked tired, haggard. He looked how Tony felt. “Come on,” he said, voice going softer. “Get into the car.”

Stephen nodded, and Tony pushed him gently into the car, following after him and letting Pepper slide in and close the door behind them.

He could see the way Pepper watched Stephen; he wondered just what Rhodey had told her, what message he’d had about the man that Tony hadn’t let out of his sight since they’d escaped that cave.

Though at least that was mutual. Stephen was just as disinclined to let Tony out of his sight as Tony was to let Stephen out of his.

Trauma, Rhodey had called it.

Tony thought it was closer to a mix of trust and desperation. But then, maybe that was what trauma was, holding desperately to the only things left you could trust.

“Where to, Boss?” Happy asked him, voice almost gentle in a way that felt strange from Happy.

“To the hospital,” Pepper ordered.

“No.” Just the thought of it made Tony’s skin crawl. Of strangers’ hands touching him, of their eyes on the reactor in his chest.

“Tony,” Stephen’s voice was quiet, but no less firm for it. “You need a doctor.”

“You’re a doctor,” Tony protested. He grabbed Stephen’s hand, bringing it up to rest on his chest right over the arc reactor. “And you’re the only one I trust with this.” Yinsen had died on them, Stephen was the only one he had left.

A complicated look crossed Stephen’s face. Reluctance, because Stephen, unlike him, did trust doctors. Understanding because Stephen knew perfectly just how vulnerable Tony was right now. “Fine. For now.”

It was as much of a win as Tony was likely to get.

“Tony.” This time it was Pepper’s turn to be remonstrating. “You have to—“

“I don’t have to do anything,” Tony snapped, flinching a little at his own tone. He clenched at Stephen’s hand where he was still holding it. “We’ve been held captive in a cave for three months. I don’t have to do anything.” Pepper pursed her lips but nodded. “But there are three things that I want to do. I want an American Cheeseburger.”

Stephen sighed. “Tony.”

Tony ignored him. Because if anyone would convince him to change his mind, it was Stephen. Right now Tony didn’t want to be convinced to be ‘rational’, he just… he needed this.

“I want someone to find out what happened to a doctor named Christine Palmer—” 

Stephen stiffened at that It was his turn to tighten his grip around Tony’s hand to the point where it almost hurt. Tony could only silently pray that Stephen’s best friend was still out there somewhere, safe and sound. The two of them had been together, a short stint with doctors without borders, when Stephen had been taken. The question of her fate had haunted Stephen almost as much as the captivity had.

“—And I want you to call for a press conference.”

“A press conference?” Confusion colored Pepper’s tone, but Tony didn’t have the energy to try to explain everything to her.

“Yes.” He doubted it would be hard to organize, the media would be frothing at the mouth to get ahold of him. They weren’t going to like what he had to say, however.

But that sure as hell wasn’t going to stop Tony from saying it.

His robes are multi-layered and possibly armored underneath, the Cloak is thick and heavy. He’s burning up before the battle is even halfway through.

At the end, when the threat is dealt with, he collapses from heat exhaustion.
