My dear lgbt+ kids,

A quick hug to everyone who ever had a “I’m super straight! Not gay! Not gay at all!” phase.

Many people need time to understand and accept their feelings, and for some this includes a period of aggressively shoving their feelings away.

The questioning kid who deals with their confusion by screaming “Eww” as soon as someone says the word Gay: that’s a cliche we may cringe at in books or movies - and that’s one reason why it can feel so embarrassing and confusing to realize that you (sort of) fit into that cliche.

Please don’t be hard on yourself. Society (still) doesn’t make it easy to explore your feelings with patience and curiosity. Instead, exploring often brings shame and fear and yes, even anger. Anger at yourself for not being “normal” or not being able to “fight against it”.

Gay is a perfectly normal and beautiful thing to be, it’s nothing anyone should need to try to change about themselves. But many of us don’t hear that while growing up, and this lack of support can easily lead to that whole “trying to kill my blooming feelings by angrily stepping on them” situation.
