100 Days of Productivity [Day: 80] || 100 Jours de Productivité [Jour: 80]

interesting conversations were had in the office today. since I work alongside a few other FSL people [French Second Language], the conversation came up about how best to learn. Duolingo came up & all of us agreed that while it's a good app to practice already learned skills, it provides very little in terms of actually learning the language. before I enrolled in actual French classes, I used a combination of other language programs, listened to podcasts that were in slow-French [as people tend to speak quickly when talking in a language they're familiar with] but one of the biggest things that helped me learn was actually watching children's shows/reading children's books. no matter the language, any content produced for learning-age children use the basics of that language in order to communicate.

combining oral practice [speaking] as well as listening to & reading in a language are all essential in fluency. I started learning French in grade school at a young age, & even now I still struggle sometimes, especially when using it to communicate professionally. my grammar still isn't perfect, but thankfully I'm in an environment where I get to cultivate those skills daily - plus I have this blog where I write in both languages as regularly as I can :]

Des conversations intéressantes ont eu lieu au bureau aujourd'hui. Come je travaille avec quelques autres personnes en FLS [français langue seconde], la conversation a porté sur la meilleure façon d'apprendre. Duolingo a été évoqué et nous avons tous convenu que, bien qu'il s'agisse d'une bonne application pour mettre en pratique les compétences déjà acquises, elle n'apporte pas grand-chose en termes d'apprentissage réel de la langue. avant de m'inscrire à des cours de français, j'ai utilisé une combinaison d'autres programmes linguistiques, j'ai écouté des podcasts en français lent [car les gens ont tendance à parler vite lorsqu'ils parlent dans une langue qui leur est familière], mais l'une des choses qui m'a le plus aidé à apprendre a été de regarder des émissions pour enfants ou de lire des livres pour enfants. quelle que soit la langue, tout contenu produit pour des enfants en âge d'apprendre utilise les bases de cette langue afin de communiquer.

la combinaison de la pratique orale [parler], de l'écoute et de la lecture dans une langue est essentielle à la fluidité. J'ai commencé à apprendre le français à l'école primaire à un jeune âge, et même maintenant j'ai encore parfois des difficultés, surtout quand je l'utilise pour communiquer professionnellement. ma grammaire n'est toujours pas parfaite, mais heureusement je suis dans un environnement où je peux cultiver ces compétences quotidiennement - en plus j'ai ce blog où j'écris dans les deux langues aussi régulièrement que je le peux :]

I've finally fallen back into a daily routine that I can be happy with. There's been enough time before & after work to get everything done that I've wanted to while also having enough time for me. It feels good to be back on track with my reading goal for the year & to be digging into book recommendations that are more to my liking.

early mornings are a lot more rewarding when you're able to spend them doing what you want to. & life feels like it's worth living when you can give yourself the freedom you deserve.

J'ai enfin retrouvé une routine quotidienne qui me convient. J'ai eu assez de temps avant et après le travail pour faire tout ce que je voulais faire, tout en ayant assez de temps pour moi. Cela fait du bien de retrouver mon objectif de lecture pour l'année et de me plonger dans des recommandations de livres qui me plaisent davantage.

Les petits matins sont beaucoup plus gratifiants lorsqu'on peut les consacrer à ce que l'on veut. Et la vie vaut la peine d'être vécue lorsqu'on peut se donner la liberté que l'on mérite.

time passes in a different way every day. hello & goodbye all at once.

the semester is over for me which means I've officially started full time at my new job. I started full time a couple weeks ago after witnessing the wedding of a wonderful friend, on the day of the solar eclipse, at a castle. I've hardly had the time to properly say farewell [for now] to everyone at home.

while this isn't the first time I've lived away, this is certainly the first time I've come to a place alone. it's both exhilarating & daunting at the same time. especially with the language difference. i've always fancied a different climate & new people, but the homesickness still comes to visit sometimes. my new office is small & my coworkers are all wonderful, so at least there's plenty of company during the day. hopefully soon, I'll be joined by both my partner & my elderly mother who I worry about daily. for now, the nightly video calls will suffice.

le temps passe chaque jour d'une manière différente. bonjour et au revoir en même temps.

Le semestre est terminé pour moi, ce qui signifie que j'ai officiellement commencé à travailler à temps plein dans mon nouvel emploi. J'ai commencé il y a deux semaines après avoir assisté au mariage d'un ami merveilleux, le jour de l'éclipse solaire, dans un château. J'ai à peine eu le temps de dire adieu [pour l'instant] à tout le monde à la maison.

Ce n'est pas la première fois que je vis à l'étranger, mais c'est certainement la première fois que j'arrive seule dans un endroit. c'est à la fois exaltant et intimidant. surtout avec la différence de langue. j'ai toujours eu envie d'un climat différent et de nouvelles personnes, mais le mal du pays vient parfois me rendre visite. Mon nouveau bureau est petit et mes collègues sont tous formidables, alors au moins il y a beaucoup de compagnie pendant la journée. j'espère que bientôt je serai rejointe par mon partenaire et ma mère âgée pour laquelle je m'inquiète quotidiennement. pour l'instant, les appels vidéo nocturnes suffiront.

Thoroughly enjoyed this from cover to cover. I thought it was over after putting the book down, but it's days later & I'm still thinking about so many parts of the story.

I'm absolutely devastated about so many of the ideas this book raises about love, loss, sacrifice, & the uncertainty of the future. the fluid value & nature of humanity.

you know you’ve done a lot of writing when your hand starts to cramp just from holding a pen. even still, I find it satisfying. filling pages with plans & expectations. filling books with ideas & theories alike. I can feel the seasons changing in my daily routine. I’m ready for change, as I have been.

vous savez que vous avez beaucoup écrit lorsque votre main commence à avoir des crampes rien qu'en tenant un stylo. malgré tout, je trouve cela satisfaisant. remplir des pages avec des plans et des attentes. remplir des livres avec des idées et des théories. Je peux sentir les saisons changer dans ma routine quotidienne. Je suis prête pour le changement, comme je l'ai été.

maybe it's alright if I admit that I'm tired. today, though. just today.

it's interesting how you can cram an immense amount of things into one day & still feel like you haven't done much when you finally get some downtime. I've been splitting my days between my studies, freelance work, & now preparatory things for my job. 4:30am to rise & not getting to bed until sometime past 10. this is why I'm deeply grateful I keep a journal. it allows me to look back & remind myself that I really have done enough.

Peut-être que je peux admettre que je suis fatiguée. Aujourd'hui, cependant, juste aujourd'hui.

C'est intéressant de voir comment on peut accumuler une quantité énorme de choses en une journée tout en ayant l'impression de n'avoir pas fait grand-chose quand on a enfin un peu de temps libre. J'ai partagé mes journées entre mes études, mon travail en freelance, et maintenant les préparatifs pour mon travail. Je me lève à 4 h 30 et ne me couche qu'à 10 h passées. C'est pourquoi je suis profondément reconnaissante de tenir un journal, qui me permet de regarder en arrière et de me rappeler que j'en ai vraiment fait assez.

waiting, waiting, always waiting – for spring that is – it seems.

it's a little depressing watching all of the snow melt & the weather get warmer, only to have a fresh dumping the following week. it's a good thing I love sweaters.

this month has brought some amazing things, & the first of those being a new job. I had applied for this position on a whim, not actually thinking anything would come of it. but here I am, several weeks and one language proficiency exam later, ending the semester with a new job on the horizon. everything feels so surreal, but I am looking forward to it & deeply thankful.

Nous attendons, nous attendons, nous attendons toujours le printemps, semble-t-il.

C'est un peu déprimant de voir toute la neige fondre et le temps se réchauffer, pour se retrouver avec une nouvelle chute la semaine suivante.

Ce mois-ci a apporté des choses extraordinaires, la première étant un nouveau travail. J'ai postulé à ce poste sur un coup de tête, sans vraiment penser qu'il en résulterait quelque chose. mais me voilà, plusieurs semaines et un examen de compétence linguistique plus tard, en train de terminer le semestre avec un nouvel emploi à l'horizon. tout semble surréaliste, mais j'ai hâte et je suis profondément reconnaissante.

this week has me tired, so tired. but I wouldn't trade it for the world. often, as I approach the end of a semester, I often take time to look back to where I was - at the beginning; the quarter, the year, 10 years - not to compare, but simply to see the difference. I swore upon leaving my bachelors that I would never take up school again. yet here I am, & all the better for it.

somehow it’s March & I have no idea where the time has gone. this week is going to be the busiest I’ve had since the holidays & I’m hoping that I can keep it from falling into complete chaos. transposing written work into a second language has become a regular enough thing for me that I should feel confident in my abilities, but at the same time there’s always a nagging at the back of my mind that I’m missing something.

a dear friend is getting married in just over a month, & I’m emotional thinking about how much they’ve grown & how far they’ve come. I hope my silly little speech does them some justice.

Nous sommes en mars et je n'ai aucune idée du temps écoulé. Cette semaine va être la plus chargée que j'ai eue depuis les vacances et j'espère que j'arriverai à ne pas sombrer dans le chaos le plus complet. transposer un travail écrit dans une deuxième langue est devenu une activité suffisamment régulière pour que je sois confiante dans mes capacités, mais en même temps, j'ai toujours l'impression qu'il me manque quelque chose.

Une amie très chère se marie dans un peu plus d'un mois, et je suis émue en pensant à leur croissance et au chemin qu'elles ont parcouru. J'espère que mon petit discours stupide leur rendra justice.
