Lately these faces have been coming to me when I sit down to sketch

This was a sketch from yesterday. I have been spending a lot of time parsing through and detangling my fundamentalist Christian roots. What I’ve discovered most interestingly is my desire to believe in something again along with an equally powerful aversion to believe in anything.

Here I drew my own hands in prayer surrounded by 12 little circles. The 12 circles represent the 12 disciples of Jesus and the 12 signs of the zodiac. Astrology has taken root in the barren soil religious dogma left behind.

The black area between the hands represents the need to contain the darkness of fear and death that religion and belief systems seek to soothe.

It brought me to the question: “Are we ever so different from who we were?”
