maybe it’s been too long since I’ve seen the scene as it aired but I think the I Forgive You really does change the entire dynamic of the scene at least as it’s read. I mean if you had asked me five minutes ago I would’ve told you that not only do I understand why they cut the I Love You but I condone it and am glad they cut it, but now like. I Forgive You…I Love You…that’s it bro. that changes the dynamic. it goes from Don’t Kill Me I Love You to You Are Going To Kill Me And I Love You it just. it changes the whole. it changes the whole scene. it’s not a confession and it’s no longer a plead—it’s a fact that he states so that when the Cas He Knows Is In There breaks free and looks down and the hands he used to end dean’s life, he can know that dean did not die angry at him, that he is forgiven, that he is loved. its not a statement dean expects to see the other side of—there’s no “we can work this out.” the pathetic appeal of the “I Love You” is canceled out by the finality of the “I Forgive You.” dean’s already worked it out. he’s already decided that Cas is forgiven. he’s not asking for mercy, he’s giving it.

Thank fuck this episode is being brought up.
I honestly should have brought it up sooner, because even when I first watched this episode at 11-years-old, I was angry with the writing choices.
Now, I am of the belief that, if you love a piece of media, you should feel encouraged to point out and dissect the harmful or negative aspects of that media. So here we go:
It is incredibly frustrating that Chuck is written to be such a predictable and incompetent god that he was able to be defeated by humans, but that he's also written to be powerful enough that his toy creations are able to completely wipe other gods off the map with hardly any effort at all.
And the way that Lucifer– the literal devil– essentially saves the day by killing non-christian deities and preventing Sam and Dean from being eaten is, not just crappy writing, but also just plain insulting. Lucifer is a rapist, a mass murderer, a harbinger of evil– and he still is somehow shown in a better light than non-western gods in this episode. Even though he's not explicitly called a hero, he still saves the day by being responsible for Sam and Dean living another day.
Additionally, POC and non-christian religions are already subjected to constant stereotypes and demonizing by christians. They're labeled as "immoral", "blood magic-practicing", "cannibalistic", "pet-eating" etc etc etc in real life. So the cannibal/sacrifice arc (which, as you said, doesn't even fit the lore of several of these gods), paired with the fact that Hammer of the Gods is probably the episode with the largest POC cast, feels intentionally harmful.
Edit: And sure, it can be argued that some of these are intentional irony written for the sake of criticizing christianity, but SPN doesn't treat their POC characters with nearly enough respect, knowledge, or dignity to justify the choices in this episode.
Im gonna be a little critical of Supernatural for a second and everything i say is with Love.
Fucking Hammer of the Gods annoys me so fucking much.
Season 5 Episode 19 - they had to have known by this point they were getting renewed for another season. They had to have known that they were going to keep raising the stakes past regular Biblical Apocalypse and yet. In one fell swoop invalidated 3 or 4 different other religions and their Apocalypses to continue raising those stakes. More under the cut.
AND FURTHER INVALIDATED THE GODS OF THOSE RELIGIONS BY HAVING LUCIFER ICE ALL OF THEM?? YOU'RE TELLING ME ONE ARCHANGEL, LUCIFER OR NOT, OUT DOES ODIN??? GANESH??? K A L I T H E D E S T R O Y E R?! OR BALDUR WHO IS LITERALLY NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO BE HURT BY ANYONE OR THING OTHER THAN MISTLETOE????
Centreing the entirety of Christianity Theology as above all other Mythologies and Religions completely fucked over the series. And this isn't even TOUCHING the implications of how powerful Gabriel is by A) Creating a whole God in a separate religion as a persona and B) Creating a history for that God that PREDATES CHRISTIANITY BY THOUSANDS OF YEARS.
Like. H o w. Is Gabriel that powerful compared to a literal creator deity like Odin. Or Shiva.
And what happened to Original Loki if there ever was one??
And let's not even get into the racist and human sacrifice implications. Like. Kali and Ganesh are Hindu. They didnt have human sacrifice. They were vegetarian.
This episode fucking annoys me to no end. Like they could have had a new Mythologies or Religions Apocalypse every few seasons. Doing exactly what they did with the Judeo-Christian Apocalypse - spend a few seasons building up to it in accordance with Theology and one penultimate season for the actual Apocalypse.
An arc for Norse Ragnarok. An arc for Hindu Apocalypse. So one and so forth you get me. Maybe still do Leviathans and Purgatory and the Angels falling. BUT THERE HAD TO HAVE BEEN OTHER WAYS TO DO THIS.
God this episode makes me fucking mad.

i think it's very important that when they're together dean has some cat behaviors like if cas is on the bed reading a book or even looking over a bunch of research with a cup of tea in his hand dean will stomp over and climb on top of him with absolutely no warning just to lie there and papers go flying and cas is like "DEAN, dammit... i have tea."
dean mumbles into his chest, "mmm yeah. and very good reflexes."
cas just sighs and pats him on the head.
once dean is liberated to give affection as much as he wants it's often sloppy and imposing lol.

Sam didn’t choose Ruby over Dean he chose death over living in a world where Dean hated him.
Dean was supposed to think Sam chose Ruby over him because that’s central to their conflict in season five. Dean believes this because he has incomplete information.
Dean doesn’t know about the voicemail.
Dean doesn’t know Sam thought he would die killing Lilith.
Dean didn’t understand that Sam thinking he was weak wasn’t derogatory but rather the fear that his love for Sam would get him killed again.
None of this is to say Sam was completely altruistic but when the hell is anyone ever?
The show did take some measures to make us believe Sam was going down a truly dark path but you’re not actually supposed to think that at the end. Kripke even joked about it through Chuck; “I thought it would make you unsympathetic.”
In short, stop being mean to my baby Sam.
#this this this#its always misunderstandings#its what chuck fucking thrives on and what fuels the discord for his “story”#sam winchester#dean winchester#spn#spn meta

Had an idea
Imagine Dean goes to pick up his little brother, Sam, from campus. He's overworked and exhausted, and all he wants to do is go home, eat the pie he got yesterday, and sleep till morning
He pulls up to the curb where he usually picks up Sam and calls "Get in". Doesn't think twice to drive away after hearing the backseat door open and close. Doesn't question why Sammy would go to the back instead of shotgun
Jack meanwhile, waits 10 full minutes before asking, "So where are we going?"
Dean nearly swerves off the road before hitting the breaks. Fully awake now, he turns and stares at Jack ".. You're not Sammy" Jack tilts his head and squints. "No, I'm Jack."
"Why the fuck are you in my car???"
"You told me to get in."
"You don't know who I am! Why the fuck did you listen???"
Meanwhile, professor Castiel is on campus, freaking the fuck out because he can't find his son who he told specifically to wait for him on the curb near his last class
Sam, one of Cas' students, is trying to help and reassure him cause Cas is having an absolute meltdown
Neither of them knows Dean accidentally kidnapped Cas' son
Shinanigans ensue

Castiel and Meg have some sort of lavender queer platonic marriage thing going on. Also they’re in love. Who knows if their love is romantic or not. It’s a little bit romantic, but it’s also not. To call it that would be a disservice to their relationship to each other. YES she’s a lesbian. YES he’s gay. YES he’s in love with Dean. So what?
#THANK YOU#this.#theyre two supernatur entities who have defied their conventional roles#of course their relationship does the same#when theres a check box of options to define their relationship im selecting All Of The Above#megstiel#castiel#spn#meg masters

The thing that strikes me about Megstiel is how nobody but Meg CLAIMED Cas the way she did. "I'll just take MY angel," "That's MY boy," "Save your brother... and MY unicorn." When Cas was just kind of... there... to Sam and Dean (most of the series, tbh), Meg was the only one who said, "Does nobody want this sad weird little angel? OK, DIBS!"
And fuck yeah it was mutual. Seven years after she's dead and you're still calling yourself by your pet name for you? You think you see her in a nether realm and for a split second look less world-weary and more hopeful and joyous than you have in years?
He was HER angel. No question. But also, she was HIS demon. They were each other's. Fight me.

Meg starts noticing the little changes gradually. Suddenly she's craving food, remembers the pleasure of eating. She finds herself getting misty eyed watching rom-coms with a long forgotten ache in her chest of what it's like to experience romance. She thinks it's strange, but maybe it's just because she spent too much time topside trying to steer clear from the dregs of Hell, but it shouldn't be anything to worry about.
She finds herself drowsy, muscles a little achy, and she can even swear she feels the blood rushing through her veins as she lays her head on Castiel's chest after a passionate exchange in the sheets. The angel's breath is slow and even, his hand unmoving upon her hip until she feels a twitch of his finger, and she turns her head to glance up at him, and he's sleeping.
But angels don't sleep. And demons don't eat. And she used to hate poetry, but when Castiel tells her she's beautiful and she can see every bit of truth in those sapphire eyes, she's suddenly captivated with sonnets in a way that makes her ribs feel tight. It's too heavy, too human. The realization sets in that the longer they spend time together, the more humanity is weaved between them.

The bi erasure when it comes to Castiel. . . gods am I glad I got out when I did. Megstiel was CANON people. Being in love with Dean Winchester doesn't make you gay by default. If anything it's more likely to make you bi, regardless of your gender or previously identified sexuality 🤷🏻♀️
#Im always surprised when Castiel “I am utterly indifferent to sexual orientation” Angel of the Lord is so rarely hc as bi/pan#bi/pan Cas my beloved#castiel#spn

Thinking about Meg and Cas, and about how it's odd that a demon would fall in love with an angel. Thinking about how Meg is a human soul who was tortured so horribly in hell that she became a new species entirely, and how she has always craved freedom from the bounds of being a demon. Freedom from Crowley, freedom from Hell, freedom from expectations, freedom from labor, freedom from fate.
And then here comes this being: Angel of the Lord, commander of heavenly garrisons, loyal soldier of the Lord. A being even more strictly bound by fate than demons, and yet, he defies the most powerful being in existence for the sake of free will.
It's admirable and, even more vital, it's everything Meg wants herself.
And Cas is kind to her. Admittedly, he's also kind of a dick, but once they've spent time just the two of them, with no social pressures or wayward eyes, they allow themselves to be more genuine with one another.
Castiel sees the thorny gruesome truth of her tortured soul and still finds her beautiful. He makes her feel lovable.

season 8 is truly THE destiel season. currently on episode 8.22 ("Clip Show"), which starts with this exchange here after Dean says he's gonna do a grocery run to Sam, and ignores Castiel who's standing right there. this obviously upsets Castiel, and the following exchange happens:
CASTIEL.- Dean, I can go with you. Dean. I'm sorry. DEAN.- For what? CASTIEL.- For everything. DEAN.- Everything? Like, uh... Like ignoring us? Or like bolting off with the angel tablet and losing it because you didn't trust me? You didn't trust me. CASTIEL.- Yes. DEAN.- Yeah, that's not gonna cut it. Not this time. So you can take your little apology and you cram it up your ass. CASTIEL.- Dean, I thought I was doing the right thing. DEAN.- Yeah, you always do. [Angsty eyefucking ensues.]
then in the next scene Dean and Sam are entering a dark room (presumably room 7B), and Sam brings the topic up.
SAM.- Dude, go easy on Cas, okay? He's one of the good guys. DEAN.- Look, if anybody else, I mean anybody, had pulled that kind of crap, I'd stab them in the neck on principle. Why should I give him a free pass? SAM.- Because it's Cas.
Dean said it himself. if this had been done by anybody else, literally anybody, he would've given them hell. with Cas, though? they picked him up from the middle of the road, and they took him to the Men of Letters bunker despite the fact that it's meant to be a secret location where nothing can find them.
if Castiel tried to talk to him, it was either because he thought there was a chance that Dean might listen, or because his desperation to get through to Dean was greater than his anxiety over Dean refusing to listen. either way, he looked truly distraught every time Dean rejected his attempts at talking to him, which I'd say is a clear sign that he cares a fuckton about how Dean thinks of him and acts around him.
this said, it's just really interesting to look at what each of them is feeling. on the one hand, Castiel was really upset that Dean kept rejecting his company and help. not only does he puppy-eye him intensely-
he also goes grocery shopping for the bunker, and we see him getting exactly what he knows Dean wants. he grabs Busty Asian Beauties, which is Dean's iconic go-to adult magazine, and he grabs a six-pack, and he needs pie. he needs pie for Dean, who always tells whoever's hitting the shops to grab him some, and he needs it to the point that he physically assaults the cashier about it.
mind you, Castiel has no shit clue about how human grocery shopping works, but he nonetheless tries, and when he chases Metatron down the street we can see him carrying the shopping bag and six-pack. you'd think that toilet paper and Busty Asian Beauties would take the backseat after meeting the Scribe of God!! but Castiel makes sure to bring them along as he runs after the Scribe of God
considering that the 'tism comes with penguin pebbling as a love language, i would say that this shows the extent to which Castiel is worried about showing Dean how truly sorry he is. it matters so much to him that he can earn Dean's forgiveness by giving him all his favourite things - or at least placate Dean's ire - that he doesn't even think about whether bringing the groceries along is appropriate.
meanwhile what Dean is pissed off about the most is the fact that Cas didn't trust him.
if you watch the episode and get to the bit I transcribed, he is upset over two main things. one, that Castiel kept ignoring their prayers, which of course means that both Sam and himself kept trying to reach him. two, that Castiel went on the run because he didn't trust Dean. notice how he says "because you didn't trust me" - not "us" -, and how he repeats "you didn't trust me" with heavy emphasis on me.
later, when Sam tells him to go easy on Castiel, what Dean replies is that anybody else would've gotten a stab to the neck if they'd done what Castiel has. which means that Cas is getting a special treatment to an extent, since his neck is pretty much intact!
yeah, Dean is fuming, but other than giving Castiel the cold shoulder he's allowing him to stay at the bunker with them. and, i repeat, there has been no blade to the neck just yet, which says something considering that Dean has been pretty blade-happy since he got back from Purgatory :)
he acts like he doesn't give a shit about Castiel not being in the bunker when they get back from their interview with a priest, even though his absence is precisely one of the reasons why he's so pissed in the first place. from Sam's expression, it's pretty clear that he's quite puzzled by Dean's attitude, because it's just not like him.
Cas is one of the good guys, after all, and don't they give the good guys second chances? as long as they're on their side? why is Dean acting so angry still towards Castiel, when Cas is among the Top 3 most powerful allies they have?
all in all these two are dealing with an insane amount of emotional suffering that has to do with perceived abandonment. on the one hand Castiel feels devastated that Dean isn't talking to him nor taking his apology
on the other we've got Dean, who cannot look Cas in the face after Castiel turned his back on them, ignored his prayers, and didn't trust Dean enough to tell him where he was going and what he was doing with the angel tablet. this isn't Dean's first rodeo with Cas vanishing into thin air, nor is it the first time that Castiel plays a crucial role in the world's fate and doesn't care to explain it to Dean.
it isn't even the first time that Dean has prayed to Cas without getting any response (Season 6 anyone), but it is the first time that Castiel has done so after Dean let his guard down fully and admitted to needing Castiel after Cas beat him to a bloody pulp.
and it is the first time we've seen Dean on the verge of tears as he prays to Castiel, which by the way is something that he does when he's alone in his bedroom.
truly insane character dynamics. truly masterful character development, and truly scrumptious ship overall.
#I think its the fact that Dean let his guard down and admitted point blank “I need you” to Cas before this thats the most important#I think at this point Dean is constantly oscillating between desperately needing Cas to be near (especially after their stint in purgatory)#and self-flagellation over feeling that vulnerable in the first place#this is a man who wasnt even allowed to need his own dad when he was a CHILD#of course he's going to feel shame over needing someone other than Sam#and Cas doesnt really understand why Dean is angry which only serves to piss Dean off more#Cas doesnt understand his importance to Sam and Dean outside of his usefulness#not really#he tries to make amends by pleasing Dean but its clear that he doesnt fully grasp what it is thats making Dean upset#and for Dean to openly wear his heart on his sleeve only to be left behind and misunderstood is probably one hell of an emotional turmoil#insane show for insane people#spn#spn meta#dean winchester#castiel#destiel
