Writings of a Ghost
“Strength? What does that truly mean? The word implies power… Having the power to overcome an obstacle, to lift a weight that is physical and mental. How does strength manifest itself? People train their bodies to grow muscles that make physical strength possible. Training mental strength is a different thing entirely, or is it? Strengthening the body consists of trauma to the muscle. Leading to the tiring, straining, and tearing of the specific muscle. Destroying it, decimating it. Leaving you tired, sore, and unwilling to go on… unable to continue.
Mental trauma is so complex… How do you induce mental trauma willingly? Why must you? Silly question sure, but who wants to be in a truly traumatic situation? To choose a life that willingly puts you in a situation that introduces the mind to trauma so that, like a muscle, you can tire it, strain it, destroy and decimate it, and like a physical muscle it will repair itself and return anew… Stronger, able to move more weight, or take on more strain. Would I consider that person smart? Would I admire the courage of a person who willingly does this?... Am I strong?… Do I even want to be?…”

Writings of a Ghost
“I feel alone and empty with no sense of purpose. No drive, motivation or will to carry on. When I sleep I welcome the deep nothing that washes over my mind. I lose myself in the abyss of dismay and black. I might dream… I might not… All seems right in this state of absolute. No stress, no hate, no fear, or pain, responsibilities do not exist. Neither does joy or love or passion or ecstasy, or a sense of purpose. Is that good? With no commitment or expectations to live up to, the nothing seems welcoming. Gently floating in the “sunken place”, able to conjure any reality I see fit, for I know that when I wake that realty no longer exists. Living entire life times in this state of “sleep". I can be great or meek, with no judgment, free from peering eyes that I must try to impress. No fake smile to display or fake laugh to appease. Just me, it and the freedom of consciousness… Only to wake up to the loneliness, the emptiness, the nothing…”

Mastery Journal Edward Sanchez BPD
Business Plan Development (BPD) is the culmination of all the hard work during my time here at Full Sail University. I presumed that I would learn the formula for building a business plan in this class but that’s not the case. My goal was to learn the fundamentals of how to create the professional document. However, there is no “formula” or “set of rules” that list out how to build a flawless business plan. Instead, the curriculum breaks down a business idea into key pieces such as Branding, Management, Law, Finance, and Marketing; which combined, are integral in developing a successful venture. Our instructor, Dr. Steven Burhoe, is an incredible professor with extensive knowledge in starting businesses. He discusses the mindset of how investors look at a business plan and what makes them worthy of investment. With Dr. Burhoe’s industry experience, he illustrates how one should look at starting a business. He also identifies both the pros and cons of being an employer and what needs to be done to ensure the longevity of one’s enterprise. With this knowledge, I have been able to confidently construct a business plan that showcases the potential of my venture and it is formulated in such a way that appeals to those who may read or invest in it.
Dr. Burhoe has said, “Money is everywhere, guys” (Burhoe, 2016).  Although that stuck with me, I feel it is missing a crucial piece. It would be more accurate to add “but you must learn where to look”. Even though he did not say it, he did however, show us. With all of his experience, he displayed a sense of curiosity and the willingness to educate himself on certain subjects. He would have videos and websites ready to share with the class. These resources were usually about new and upcoming tech, or news related to business that was noteworthy to industry growth or decline. This concept may seem obvious or commonplace to some, but for others, we are simply not taught where to look for opportunities or even what they could resemble. This knowledge equips me with the ability to recognize a prospect and pursue it in a strategic and organized way.

Reflections Edward Sanchez Digital Marketing
Tumblr media
(Sanchez, 2015)
This month I have the wonderful opportunity to learn about Digital Marketing from our course director Kristen Stewart. My intended goal for this course is to learn how marketing plans are created and why exactly, are they so integral to this day and age. Within the first week I learned what “Content Marketing” is and it’s relevance in marketing, the importance of “Search Engine Optimization” (SEO), and discussed what factors maximize the efforts of an SEO campaign. We also discussed useful tools currently available that aid in monitoring the performance of strategies being used in a campaign.  Lastly, by the second week we covered topics pertaining to best practices for using “Paid Searches” and planning our own campaign for our specific business.
What is “Content Marketing”? It is the strategic act of driving profitable customer action, utilizing valuable content created and distributed to a specific target audience. When it comes to content marketing not all content is created equal. A creator should ensure the content made is valuable, relevant and consistent with the consumers they are trying to attract.  However content alone will not be effective, a marketing strategy must accompany the content. How do you create quality content when you don’t know who your audience is? What do you do after you gain the attention of an audience? The marketing strategy answers these questions. Ultimately content marketing is the integral piece of the puzzle needed to communicate with your customers and piqué their interest in a specific product. (Content Marketing Institution, 2007)
I was truly interested in (SEO) or “Search Engine Optimization”. I had heard the term before and the name alone caused my brain to shut off. Kristen was able to demystify it and explained it simply and plainly. SEO is how search engines rank your content and it’s relevance to consumers. Understanding SEO enables you to customize your content and create it in such a way that optimizes its relevance, potentially resulting in a higher ranking. Search Engine Optimization is free (organic), a company cannot pay to be placed or ranked higher than another company, and they must optimize their content similar to everyone else.  This infographic illustrates some of the best practices to enhance your content for SEO
Tumblr media
(Search Engine Land, 2016)
Using a blogger account created for the purpose of acclimating students to the digital world, Kristen explained how to set up specific tools that will aid us in learning the concepts of Digital Marketing. We linked Google Analytics, Webmasters, and AdWords to our blogs, which afforded the class the opportunity to observe these tools in action.  Ms. Stewart recommended other resources such as Google Adsense, SEMRush, Spyfu, Keyword Density Checker, Pintrest, and more be researched to determine how each can benefit us individually.
Lastly, we discussed the pros and cons of utilizing a “Paid Search” strategy for digital campaigns. When you search a topic, do you genuinely avoid the ads that populate at the top of a search? If you are like me, the answer is a resounding yes. Statistically, numerous consumers avoid the paid ads. However, having a paid ad may offer validity with a company to a certain degree. Consumers may overlook the paid ad, but actively seek the ad free version of the company further down the list. Using a combination of “Paid Search” and “SEO” can create a sense of legitimacy in the consumers mind.
Overall, this class is a blast and a wealth of extremely useful information. Applying these skills, tools, and principles towards our final project, which is to create a marketing strategy for our individual businesses, will prepare us for the real world. As entertainment business students, the ability to understand marketing in a digital world is integral to our success. Whether it is marketing a video game product or starting a multi-million dollar recording studio, creating a winning marketing strategy will set us apart from the competition. I have high expectations for the second half of this mind-blowing class.

Mastery Journal Edward Sanchez Media Publishing and Distribution
This month I had the awesome privilege of learning about the media publishing and distribution world. Kim Craft is a knowledgeable industry professional with extensive experience in the field. Her book, “Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution the 3rd Edition”, was a great resource to have as an introduction in learning the subject. In her book, she provides a brief history of publishing and distribution; discusses the importance of an agent and how to pitch your project; both the traditional and current publishing and distribution models; and touches on new trends and innovations available today (Craft, 2009). Reflecting on my previous “Mastery Journal Timeline” post, I had wished to learn how the distribution process worked (Sanchez, 2015). I was given the opportunity to learn that and so much more.
In the past, scribes tirelessly copied works by hand. Each copy of a literary work or a piece of music was truly unique. It was surprising to learn how this was the norm till after the 1430’s and the creation of the printing press. This made publishing more efficient and cost effective. Content creators would need to contact a publishing house to have their works created. The publishing house would not only reproduce the work for mass distribution, but would also offer additional services for the writer/musician. As time passed publishing houses were inundated with individuals who wished to publish their works. Unfortunately, not all submitted content were viable projects to work on and so; having an agent became a requirement to vet a project before submitting it.
Agencies and their representatives became the keys to entry in the entertainment industry. As the need for them grew increasingly necessary, it became extremely difficult to obtain one. For an agent to represent and shop your content, a client had to show monetary promise. It became the agency’s job to filter through the mountains of coal for the one diamond in the ruff. This led to the concept of professionally pitching an idea to an agent. Mrs. Craft does a great job providing examples of how to create the pitch for each industry. From a Film Treatment, to a Game Design Document, she highlights what they should contain and why they happen to be necessary.
Today, advancements in technology have made it possible to self-publish and self-distribute. One of our assignments was to investigate these resources and determine how they function and benefit us as content creators. I focused on gaming and studied both Steam and Good Old Games (GOG.com). Both sites act as digital publishing houses and provide developers with tools to sell content to their target audience. Several of the services include, micro-transactions, analytics, and in specific cases physical copies. These same advancements has given birth to new trends such as digital magazines, ebooks, crowd funding, and social gaming and more (Craft, 2009). Understanding the concept behind publishing, the importance of an agent, and staying up to date on new trends can make all the difference between success and failure.

Mastery Journal
This month was an excellent introduction to the principals of Product and Artist Management. We learned that "Show business is the business of the show". Profitability is the name of the game or else you just have an expensive hobby. Our instructor, Christine Winn, performs a remarkable job injecting her knowledge and experiences into the lectures. It takes a great deal to manage anything; understanding those responsibilities and what's expected of a manager is paramount to the success of your business. I would like to reflect back to my Mastery Timeline to determine how this class has helped me grow and if I met my goals set for myself.
My goal for the class was to, “understand the nuances concerning managing both a product and an artist (Sanchez, 2015).” This course delivered exactly that by highlighting what a manager is and what they typically face. Throughout the class, we observed examples of how management is utterly vital to an artist success. She/he is the CEO of the client’s business. The manager serves as a bridge between the content creator and the rest of the daily operations that must happen in order to capitalize on the content. I interpreted what was learned as, the manager is a “chief advisor”, and must build a team whose goal is simply the success of the client/product.
We were given the chance to act as Chief Marketing Officer and formulate a marketing strategy around a project of our choice. Using reliable research, we determined industry trends, the cost to advertise on different platforms and how effective those methods truly are. This marketing proposal was presented as a video and a presentation to our peers. The chief purpose of the plan was to understand how viable the strategy would be and if it could be profitable. I find projects similar to these, aid in enforcing my business idea, and deliver the resources needed to execute the idea.
