"You know what I find funny about lies?", you proclaimed as you sat down at a table near the big windows in Ten Forward.

Data sat across from you with a tilt of his head, his hands intertwining on top of the table.

“Is that a rhetorical question?”

You nod as you lick your lips and lean forward.

“When someone lies, they reveal more about themselves than if they were telling the truth. Well, once you've found out what it is they're lying about of course."

Data's eyebrows scrunch in confusion and he leans forward on the table as well. He takes a moment to gather his thoughts before speaking.

"It was to my knowledge that lying, in this context, is to hide or distort the truth. How can it be that lying reveals more of the truth than the actual truth itself?"

You grinned despite his bewildered expression.

"Let me give you an example. Lets pretend I'm lying, ok?"

He gave you a nod as he watched you with intrigue.

“I don’t like chocolate.”, you said matter of factly as if you were telling him the weather.

His eyebrows wrinkled ever so slightly.

“Why would you lie about that?”

The grin on your face could out the Cheshire Cat to shame and you suddenly slammed the surface of the table.

“Exactly! Once you catch someone in a lie, questions start to pop up. Questions like, what are they trying to cover up? Why are they covering it up? What are they scared or ashamed of?“

Your hands moved animatedly as you talked, unable to contain yourself when you saw how Dats was catching on. Data took in every detail.

“And most importantly, why are they trying to conceal who they really are?”

Quickly, you scanned your surroundings until you found what you were looking for. You motioned to Data to look at a couple sitting at a few tables away from them.

"Tell me, what do you notice about that couple sitting over there?"

A man and a woman were sharing a a smoothie of some kind, talking politely to one another. There was even a rose on the middle of their table. The ideal date.

Data stared at them for a minute before turning back to you. "They are sharing a smoothie while conversing. Is that not typical couple behaivor?"

You nod in response as a small giggle slips out.

“Too typical. Too cliché. Now theres nothing wrong with cliché if that’s what you like but…”

You got closer to Data to discreetly point out that the man’s gaze flickered behind the woman’s shoulder too much. You watched Data’s eyes widen a fraction as he realized he was eyeing another woman behind him.

“…I suspect the date is cliché because he couldn’t be bothered to think of anything original.”, you whispered.

Data tilted his head in utter confusion. Especially when he realized the woman on the date was also eyeing another woman behind the man.

“But…what purpose does it serve to be in a relationship with someone you are not attracted to?”

He snapped his head back to you, eyes desperate for answers.

You merely with a tilt of your head, your lips frowning whilst you raised your eyerbrows.

“I have no idea. That’s the fun part about lies and façades, in my opinion. It’s like a puzzle.”

Data’s eyes scanned you up and down, taking in your body language and the way despite your face showing intrigue, your eyes were unreadable.

“…Have you ever lied to me?”

You didn’t move. It bothered him a little that he couldn’t read your eyes.

“Yes.”, you answered simply. He didn’t know whether to believe you.

“I need you to remove the emotion chip.”

You jumped from your chair at the sound of the voice behind you. However, your heart rate rose rather than lowered when you realized who was talking to you and why.

“…what?”

Your mouth opened and closed after your exclamation but no sound come out.

Data sighed quietly at your reaction. The sight of his adams apple bobbing up and down in an effort to self soothe was definitely something to get used to.

“I…I no longer wish to have emotions. They are a hinderance.”

Despite wanting to say more, he held back, his new emotions making it clear as day in his face.

You took in his appearance and your heart ached at the sight. He looked so…unlike himself. His hands fidgeted at his sides, his breathing was uneven, and he blinked far more than he needed to.

You pursed your lips together. After a moments consideration, you gently grabbed his hand and guided him to sit across from you. He sat on the very edge of the chair, his back as straight as a rod.

“Data-“, you began but were quickly cut off.

“Yes I will need to be deactivated in order to remove the chip, I know, just please do it.”

He words seemed to tumble out of his mouth without control and his eyes looked pleadingly into yours. You simply looked at him firmly. He leaned back into his seat.

“Data,” you began once more, “how long have you had the chip for?”

He tilted his head slightly to the side. You held back a small smile at that.

“5 hours, 16 minutes, and 21 seconds.” He responded with confusion and a touch of impatience in his voice.

“Exactly”, you breath out.

His face scrunched up in further confusion.

“All other humans have had years to figure out tough emotions. We’ve had so much time to help us regulate them. To deal with them. And even then, some people still struggle.”

You gave him an understanding smile as the way he looked down, to the side, anywhere but your eyes. You placed your hand on top of his cheek, making his eyes widen and his gaze snap back to your face.

“You’ve only had hours, Data. Hours to acknowledge your emotions.” You gave him a knowing look.

He looked at you like if something clicked. Your thumb moved across his cheek soothingly. His hand found its way to yours.

“I know it’s easier said than done but you cannot be so hard on yourself.” His gaze flickered away again as he swallowed. You moved your head to keep his gaze on you.

“It wasn’t your fault.”

The words came out quietly. Delicately. But it was enough for Data eyes to fill with golden tears.

Instinctively, you moved your arms around his middle and he didn’t resist. His arms wrapped around his shoulders as he sobbed into your shoulder.

“But I couldn’t…Geordi..,” Your shoulder muffled his cries as you tightened your grip on him, hoping with all your heart he could feel how much love you held for him

Soo idk if someone already said this or something BUT

I was re watching the Are There Healthy Distractions Sanders Asides and idk why up until now, I’ve always glossed over the conversation between Patton and Roman about Anna and Hans.

Patton: “I just realized the reason Anna falls in love so fast is because most people have shut her out her whole life.”

Roman: “and the first person to give her attention since she lost her parents is just taking advantage of her.”

IDK IF IM CONNECTING FAKE DOTS HERE BUT WHAT IF THIS IS FORESHADOWING NICO AND THOMAS.

Like, think about it. Thomas was going through that breakup for MONTHS and then fell in love with Nico soooo quickly after that. I feel like we’re gonna see poor c!Thomas get hurt real bad.
