Choosing the Best of Coding Schools in Kenya
Learning to code in Kenya has never been easier because of the increase in the number of schools.  New coding schools in Kenya have been registered in addition to the public and private universities that offer engineering courses.
In the past, aspiring developers had to enrol for campus programs that took years to complete. Today, it is possible to learn how to code within months. The challenge now is to pick the right school.
We offer some tips on how to choose among top coding schools:
1. Check the courses offered
You may be new to coding but that is no good reason to register for course blindly. Do your homework and check the relevant programming languages. Otherwise, you may learn outdated methods while the world has evolved to other techniques.
The best programming schools in Kenya update their curricula to include the right languages for each course. In addition, it is important to enrol in a coding school that offers a variety of programming languages.
2. Consider the duration and fee
How much time do you have to learn to code? We appreciate that not all students have years to enrol into a full software engineering course. If you can, then, by all means, enrol into a such a course.
Realise that such a decision will come at a higher cost. Some people learn how to code in their free time. If you can only learn after work or during school holidays, consider coding schools that offer short programs.
The truth is that you can learn within weeks and become a world-class developer. Tutors do their part in passing knowledge. You do the rest of the work by perfect the skills in real projects.
3. Market needs
One of the reasons why coding bootcamps in Kenya have become popular is the skills in the market. Thousands of engineering students graduate from colleges and universities.
Many struggle to find jobs because their current skills do not match the needs of employers. Do you fall into this category? You can learn further by taking extra coding lessons to update your skills.
You cannot blame the tutors in colleges and universities. The education system takes time to change but you can chart your career path with the right courses. If you have not enrolled in any college, consider one that prepares you for the market.
You do not learn to code to get a job. With the current level of unemployment, you need to think of self-employment. The right school should equip with the right skills to build a business around your passion

The Impact of Apps on Agency Banking in Kenya
App developers in Kenya bear witness that new app owners go for loan apps. The move is based on the rising demand for quick loans.  The trend is not unique to Kenya.
Online entrepreneurs are selling quick loans everywhere you look. The only difference that instant loan apps in Kenya make is that customers receive them on their mobile money accounts.
Lenders consider their transactions on these accounts and not their bank accounts or employment status. Much has been said about the impact of the apps on the creditworthiness of borrowers. However, banking agents have taken a back seat in the discussion.
When banks started invited Kenyans to their business, entrepreneurs ran to grab the opportunity. The ability to pay bills or access your account in any location was unimaginable before agency banking came along.
Today, no one queues for such transactions unless it is a bulk transaction. Agents have been serving customers as banks increase the range of transactions that customers can do via the agents.
However, you can trust the technical wave to keep changing. Mobile application developers in Kenya have been keeping up with new trends. All major banks now have digital apps that are slowly replacing banking agents.
Agents are losing younger customers who understand the convenience of banking through an app. However, some bills can only be paid through an agent. For instance, deposits for rent and recurring bills need evidence of payment.
Hence, agency banking will continue despite the digital platforms. In addition, some customers still prefer the old but sure way of doing things. Some cannot even operate a smartphone let alone carry out a transaction via an app.
One thing is clear from the rate of digital transformation. Banks must redefine the range of services for their agents. Otherwise, becoming an agent may be undesirable in the future because of the profits.
The changes in the banking industry should serve as a wakeup call for other businesses in the service industry. We now have a generation of customers that operates on their smartphones. The needs and preferences of this generation should shape future growth strategies for the services sector.

Hey Eila! I remember you talking about how you are an UI/UX designer without having learned about anything like that in school. How did you get interested in this? And how did you learn more and get experience? Any good online resources to suggest?
How to Become a UX/UI Designer - A Comprehensive Guide
I’ll just do a comprehensive guide on this :D
Tumblr media
Is UX/UI designing right for you?
You’ll love User Experience Design if…
1. You love analyzing & solving problems
As a UX designer, your job is to deliver the most effective way to solve users’ problems and achieve business goals through design.
To accomplish this, you must understand:
The business: The nature of your client’s business and what they want to achieve.
The users: Who are they? What do they need to solve their problems?
The overlap: How can you provide a user experience that aligns users’ needs with the business goals?
When you have insights into these key factors, you can translate them into an optimized, implementable design solution. It can be anything from an improved user flow or information architecture, more focused messaging, or new features.
2. You love psychology (cognition & behaviors) — To design for usability, you need to understand how different types of users behave, think and process information.
3. You love researching — It’s a huge advantage to know what the competitors (of your clients) are doing and what works for them. Stay on top of trends among your target users and what’s new in the design & tech world. These insights will help you make design decisions.
4. You value functionality and efficiency as much as aesthetics — Sometimes you must sacrifice beauty, but if it boosts sales by 20%, so be it. A good designer can balance the best of both worlds.
5. You are attentive to details — There are more components to a website or app than its primary features. You must make sure to cover all scenarios that users may need, even rare ones, like error messages, forgot password popups, on-boarding, etc. You don’t want users to get stuck in limbo somewhere, become frustrated, and quit forever. This comes with experience and from studying other people’s products.
You’ll love User Interface Design if…
1. You love to communicate visually
As a UI designer, your job is to design the best way to visually communicate a clear message at first glance. You’re not just a “pretty-maker.”
Your design’s purpose is to communicate:
The brand: What is the brand image? Fun & young, sophisticated & classy, or formal & reliable? How is it different from the competitors?
The goal: What can users accomplish on this website or app? What is the most important call to action? Is it to sign up, subscribe to a newsletter, or buy something?
2. You love psychology (perception) — You have a huge advantage as a designer when you understand how visual elements affect people’s perception. How does certain colors, typography, or layout make people think and feel? You can guide users to take the actions you want, or even increase their perception of the product’s value.
3. You love consistency—A website or app is much more memorable and easy to use when the design is consistent. Pick a visual style that fits and stick with it. The same elements should be linked the same function (e.g. everything related to signing up is orange).
4. You are adaptable — Aesthetic is subjective. And your clients know more about their business than you do. What is beautiful to you may get a huge backlash from their users. You should make recommendations based on your expertise as a designer, but it is ultimately your clients’ business, and they have the final say.
Continue to the next sections on design resources, how to get started as a UX/UI designer, and tips on becoming a better one.

Digital Disruption In Kenya: The Fate of Bus-Hailing Apps
Taxi apps in Kenya have disrupted the taxi business significantly. Much relief came to those who prefer taxi rides to driving or using public transport. The move wasn’t easy. Taxi owners and drivers were not just ready to give up their territories without a fight. However, apps like Uber, Little Cab, and Taxify fought and established their businesses.
Then came bus-hailing apps that would follow the same trend. However, licensing issues have hit hard. Some companies had to shut their operations down to comply with the government directive. Read more…

CRB Integration Services in Kenya
Being listed in any CRB is a big deal but Kenyans seem unbothered by it. The rate at which instant loans have become popular is alarming. The worst part is that many defaulters move from one app to another and end up with a low credit score in all CRBs in the country.
A poor listing is not the end of the world! With a few steps, you can get your name off the CRB listing. Of course, that comes after paying all debts!
