The rapper who grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth who is now threatening people with their crew from a recording studio is not #tough. The guys at barber shops with fancy beards who talk about fighting guys at clubs, they aren't tough. The good old boys who own guns who say ignorant things about 'people pissing them off' or any other variation of 'I'm tough cause I act/look it' usually aren't - they're just dicks. When you meet a 13 year old sleeping on the streets, who must rob others at gunpoint in order to eat, it makes all the other tough guys in media and around you seem like knuckleheads. I'm happy to be coming home because after two months on the road being shoulder to shoulder with Americans of all economic and racial makeups (people who really ARE tough because they must be) I'm fired up to work. I know I'm one lucky SOB to have a bed to lay on and a choice to live without today's idea of 'tough'. Moreover, I know my fight, Burgeon's fight, must continue - as difficult as it is. The end goal? Telling stories that entertain 'tough guys' (and everyone in between) in a way where they put all that tough energy into something that matters. You don't have to save a starving child, or a rainforest, you can just clean up the person in the mirror to do the best he/she can without screwing or hurting others. Burgeon Media would not exist without Steve Irwin - period. His Orangutan special in 1997 is the reason why I traveled to Borneo in 99 to work with professor Birute Galdikas who studies these amazing animals in the wild. This is where I met the Animal Planet crew who gave me my first job production job - and it changed my life forever. I told our fixer Pappy (pictured here) this story, and how much Steve Irwin meant to my life, and he said 'I have a surprise for you.' He showed up today with an album full of pictures of the two of them filming throughout Louisiana. He reinforced what we all already know - that Steve Irwin was a gentle, caring, and loving human. He made a huge impression on the community of Bayou Black, deep in Louisiana. These people love and miss a man who touched their lives; who never forgot them and would call them weekly! I would literally move a mountain if I could bring Steve back. @bindisueirwin

Yesterday marked a strange anniversary for me. I crossed the three year mark of field days shooting on the @sonyprousa #z7u. I have a feeling this camera has birthed more hours of television programming than #panavision or any other camera maker out there. It has been my biggest enemy, sometimes only friend, but thus far it stands as the only camera able to handle the brutal conditions of #sawmppeople #iceroadtruckers #deadliestcatch and every adventure show on TV for long stretches of time without going down (too much). Someone needs to do a documentary about this camera and how it became an industry darling - especially as other cameras begin to crowd if out of work. What do you think?

A fast picture with a dirty lens for the only breathing moment I'll get before leaving @vice - but I had to share it. This young man is Fred. Fred @ciaraleilacy and I came up together in this TV hustle. We put 110 hours a week when we were paying our dues more than 12 years ago (shit). Fred followed a path of development, has developed some massive hits, can work with whoever he wants, but has never forgotten about producers like me who leave TV for long swaths of time to do other work. It doesn't matter how much time passes, he always remembers me, checks up on my life, and has given me some of the biggest breaks I've ever gotten. The pilot for Alaska State Troopers, big journalism gigs, and now the most dangerous story Vice has done in North America to date... It takes balls, trust, and love, and I'm grateful and flattered to work for my friend- one of the people who knew me when I had hair and was handsome. Pay it forward creative people, and never forget where you come from!
