The Rise of Kyoshi (Chronicles of the Avatar #1)

SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT

I cannot scream the praises of this novel any more! I was kicking my feet and squealing the entire time I read this! It has been such a long time since I have waited on baited breath for two characters to kiss like I did Kyoshi and Rangi!

Some quotes I just needed to include:

"And by every spirit of every star in the night sky, he would pay for that." I LITERALLY SCREAMED WHEN I READ THAT. It was SOOOOOO good. I was losing my mind. We love Kyoshi.

"The sight made Kyoshi's breath come to a standstill, at the very time she needed it flowing. Rangi was so beautiful, illuminated by moon and fire, that it hurt." This is literally what Taylor Swift meant when she wrote "down bad crying at the gym". RIP Avatar Kyoshi, you would have loved Taylor Swift.

"'Oh,' Kyoshi said in response to the worst news she'd heard in her life." THIS GIRL IS LITERALLY AN ORPAN. Kyoshi is so funny!!! I highlighted so many amazing quotes in this book but these three are ones I sent to MULTIPLE people because they were just too good.

I genuinely cannot wait to finish Kyoshi's story which is exciting for me to say as someone who has never been a Kyoshi fangirl. Left off on a delightful cliffhanger.

Some parallels I really enjoyed were Kyoshi leaving on a skybison during a horrible thunderstorm just like Aang. There are others, but for now this is the one that stands out. It was just so freaking good. Everyone should read this!! I do now see why many people felt underwhelmed by Roku's story - but I think it still has a lot of potential and my 5 star review still stands (but is fueled by a personal bias), and I can confidently say Kyoshi's story got 5 stars with many odds stacked against it, which is a huge feat.

This week, I read a fic that was around 20 years old, which had originally been posted on the author's personal website and which she added to AO3 a few years ago. She listed her email address with the fic, so after I finished reading, I sent her an email saying how much I enjoyed the story, how much I appreciated the work and effort she obviously put into it, and thanked her for uploading it to AO3. She responded the next day and thanked me for my message, then said she had a few more stories in the same series that she hadn't gotten around to uploading. I checked this morning--she added a 35,000 word novella and thanked me in the summary.
