we fuckin hate Uther in this house but those times he'd look at Merlin and be like "wtf is wrong with Arthur rn??" were so funny
like Uther was very firmly on the you're too close to this boy train but the moment Arthur was doing something weird he'd look at Merlin like "boy fix this rn"

Thank you to the person that shared this with me as the reason they started reading Accidentally My Companion.
Every fic where Uther assumes Merlin and Arthur are fucking:

*sips tea* it's dumb crossovers time
I guess here King Arthur was a real dude who became legend after his death (in which demons and angels might have been involved). Our heroes now have a mystery to solve, with the help of a certain sorcerer.......

Where's that fic where Merlin fights against Arthur and technically becomes a knight? They invoke the "lasting one minute in single combat" rule.

au where merlin pulled sigan’s spirit from cedric’s body and tries to shove him back in the jewel but fails and now sigan’s soul is stuck in merlin’s body and he’s just a voice in merlin’s head urging him to kill everyone. everytime uther enters the room sigan goes “oh gods this bitch again” or “someone hasn’t killed him yet?” when theres an assassin going after arthur, sigan is just like “why are we fighting so hard to save this asshat? he dumped a bucket of water on us earlier” or when arthur says something borderline sweet and merlin is lowkey swooning, sigan is just gagging in his head. when merlin gets annoyed and is insulting arthur but cant think of something particularly scathing, sigan chimes in and the words just roll off his tongue. sigan teaches merlin more powerful magic/spells that aren’t in any of the books.
they’re the epitome of
gaius: what do you want to eat
sigan: the souls of the pendragons
merlin: soup?
sigan: NO
merlin: and bread

I have worked on commenting more on stories I read because of how much I realized I appreciate comments on my fics.
someone I follow on the bird app just announced they're starting a very exclusive private fic server because they and a bunch of other people want to talk about how much they love the fics they're reading, and as an author can I just say that a really great place to talk about a fic you love is in the comments for that fic
I understand that people are trying to create safe spaces, but as the number of comments that I get on my fics dwindles with each passing year, knowing these spaces exist where my fics are being discussed, places that I am excluded from, makes me want to write fic LESS
I mean I guess who cares, right, because if I stop writing, there's 10,000 other people that will continue...but if you participate in a fic "book club" server and you say nice things there about a fic you loved, maybe copy and paste that into a comment on AO3?
the only thing fanfic writers are asking for in return for hours of hard work is attention. please don't rob us of the one thing that we hope for when we hit "post"

The story is about to begin Arthur’s search for a wife in order to fulfill Uther’s initial condition for saving Merlin (chap 71). As I do this, I realized I should rethink my arcs:
Arc 1 - (chapters 1-32, 90k words) What happens when you accidentally tell your father you're gay and in love with your manservant and he ships it hard? You make it true.
Arc 2 - (chapters 33-70, 110k words) What happens when your father sends you off to court someone you have no interest in? You bring home Gwaine instead.
Arc 3 - (chapters 71+, currently in progress) What happens when your father invites every eligible woman to Camelot so you can find your wife like you promised way back in chapter 1 just so your dad would save Merlin? Chaos.
In hindsight, I should have made this a series. Oh well. Hope you all enjoy 200-300k+ word fanfiction.
Summary: After Arthur disobeyed his father and retrieved the Mortaeus flower for Merlin's cure, Arthur's frantic pleading to save Merlin led to a misunderstanding that actually convinced Uther to take the flower to Gaius.
Now all Arthur has to do is explain to Merlin why Uther thinks they are lovers.
And while Uther is supportive of the relationship, he requires it kept secret. But in his paranoia, Uther misinterprets every innocent interaction between the two as something far more intimate, to the embarrassment of everyone involved.
And then the knights begin showing up...
Rated: M
Fluff and humor throughout. Weekly updates. Still in progress.

My theory is that part of the reason the Merlin fandom is so strong and active still today is because the ending was so (as you said) disappointing, devastating, and unforgivable. Had the ending been exactly what we'd hoped for, we'd have been satisfied and moved on.
Instead, we refuse to accept their fate and attempt to bury their tragic ending under thousands of happy endings we've imagined and wished for them.
For me, the comfort comes from knowing that for all the tragedy that befalls them in the show, I can still enjoy it because I know they've 'lived' thousands of other lives that ended in happiness through the stories others have written. Fanfiction is how I cope.
i call bbc merlin a comfort show as if it weren't frustrating and traumatizing on like ten different levels, didn't kill off almost every single character, and didn't have the most disappointing, devastating, unforgivable series finale i've ever seen.

another BBC Merlin thing we were robbed of: Arthur becoming used to Merlin's batshit power levels and then holding every other sorcerer he meets to those insanely high standards. what do you mean you can't stop time with your mind or summon lightning to the palm of your hand or blast away entire armies? Merlin can! the assassination attempts don't actually stop once the magic ban is repealed because Arthur continues to piss off a different warlock each week just by being himself

I have some fics of a different vibe than my normal stories, and they are under the pseudonym Darker Nakyrah on AO3. One of those fics is reminiscent of this prompt. It's a toxic, dark, and explicit Merthur story with an Arthur redemption arc wthin the canon time period. It's called A Show of Trust.
Read the tags.
Summary:
When Merlin refuses to follow an intimate order, Arthur threatens to tell his father that Merlin has magic. Arthur believes it's a lie he's using to scare Merlin into complying, but Merlin believes Arthur knows the truth and is testing his loyalty. The more Merlin complies, the more Arthur wants, and the more Merlin believes Arthur trusts him.
When Arthur finds himself and his knights in a hopeless situation, he finds out why his threat worked so well.
Arthur starts out as an insufferable spoiled brat who falls madly in love with his mouthy servant. So madly in love that he risks his life time and again to save Merlin. Thankfully, Merlin’s an oblivious idiot. Unfortunately, the people around him are not. So while Merlin doesn’t notice that Arthur’s so in love with him he can’t function, everyone else is like “he’s so in love with you, he’d die for you” and Merlin’s like “nah, he’d do that for anyone. He’s just like that.”
And now, sweating bullets, Arthur has to start risking his life for peasants and anyone in danger like he’s truly noble, or Merlin’s gonna figure out that he’s in love with him.
Literally, Arthur experienced so much character growth to keep himself in that closet when he could of just said, “Nope, it’s you Merlin. I don’t give a flying fuck about anyone else.”

There also needs to be a button for “this is the 5000th time I’ve read your fic because I’m having a horrible day and this is the only thing in the world that always brings me happiness.”

This is a long fic! Currently 171k. But I am recommending chunks to make this manageable for those that may get overwhelmed by long stories or not sure about in process works.
Arc 1 - establishing Merlin and Arthur’s relationship (and exasperating Uther along the way). Chapters 1-32. 90k words
Arc 2 - *just posted the conclusion of this arc today* extending outside of Camelot and adding complications. Chapters 33-55. 80k words
Arc 3 - dealing with Uther's demands (and conclusion). This is in process. I am expecting a similar word count to the previous arcs.
