"Do I know you?" is one of the first questions Arthur asks Merlin when he meets him, despite never having met before. Literally one of the first quotes Arthur gets. Like in every lifetime they met.

Arthur recognizes Merlin by his eyes alone, even when they are in a different body. How queer is that?

Every plan Arthur has for his future, even if they include running away from his inevitable fate, involves Merlin as a very important part of it.

Despite being just a servant, he treats him better than that, like a friend, like a brother, (or something more).

Merlin uses most of his magic to protect Arthur or help him, either directly or indirectly. Even in a coma he uses his magic to guide him and take care of him.

Merlin could never run away from Camelot, even in mortal danger, because it would hurt his soul to leave Arthur behind. Arthur can't let him go either. So strong is their connection that Arthur mentioned it in dreams, and was really disappointed that he didn't want to accompany him on a single (and last) campaign.

Merlin was born to serve Arthur until the end of his reign. There is no kingdom without Arthur and there is no Arthur without Merlin.

Merlin is an immortal being who was told by another immortal being to wait until Arthur returned from the dead.

ok i have a dumb Merthur fic idea: Farmer Wants a Wife AU

hear me out:

Arthur is a rich bachelor who owns a farm

Merlin is his farm hand who lives in the local town

He’s been working for Arthur for 3 years- they got off on the wrong foot by insulting each other but since then have become close friends (not that either of them would admit it)

Morgana secretly signs Arthur up to the TV show Farmer Wants a Wife

Arthur has to host 4 beautiful women on his farm and take them on dates (and everything is being filmed)

Arthur starts to realise he misses Merlin- that he would rather be mucking out the stables with him, than on a boring picnic date

Maybe he kisses one of the women and realises he’s not attracted to her and he’s like Oh Shit: Sexuality Crisis

Of course some fun banter between Merlin and Arthur around the farm when they’ve stopped filming for the day- Merlin teases Arthur about the whole Wife thing

Maybe one of the women is Gwen and she Notices how much Arthur talks about Merlin, and she Notices how awful it was when Arthur kissed her, and she puts the pieces together

Maybe Arthur and Gwen become close as friends, and at some point he confides in her (off camera) and she’s like “I know.”

MAYBE ALL THE GIRLS HAVE INDEPENDENTLY FIGURED IT OUT- and they compare notes “yeah, he was SUCH a bad kisser” “definitely gay for his farm hand” AND THEY WORK TOGETHER TO COME UP WITH A PLAN TO GET ARTHUR AND MERLIN TOGETHER

Arthur doesn’t know what’s going on, but the girls keep calling in “sick” and he keeps ending up on romantic dates with Merlin???

Don’t really know how to end this, but of course they end up together, Arthur’s a good kisser when it’s Merlin he’s kissing, he remains good friends with Gwen and the girls, and they make television history

So often I am reminded that no one will understand Arthur Pendragon the way teenage girls on tumblr in 2013 understood Arthur Pendragon. I don't even think Arthur Pendragon understands himself the way those previously teenaged girls did. It's me. I'm one of those previously teenaged girls in 2013.

I'm rewatching BBC Merlin for the hundredth time and just need to talk about The Witchfinder episode from season 2 and how this impacted Merlin's decision to keep his magic a secret.

By now, Merlin has been in Camelot long enough to see how Gaius is a trusted advisor to Uther. They've been friends for decades. Uther trusts Gaius as much as he is capable of trusting anyone.

And yet. And yet Uther STILL orders the execution of his most trusted advisor on the word of the Witchfinder.

To Uther, the years of service and trust mean nothing in the face of sorcery. Uther tried to apologize (ish) later, and rightfully so, Gaius refused to just brush the near execution aside.

Now think about Merlin. He has come to care about Arthur as a person at this point, not just part of his destiny, but they aren't as close as we know they will be later.

Merlin has been traumatized by seeing his father figure almost die because the king was blinded by his hatred of sorcery. Merlin knows it was almost his own execution here.

It's no wonder he didn't want to tell Arthur at this point. If Uther was ready to kill Gaius, we know canonically he was fine with Merlin dying.

Once Arthur became king, I believe Merlin still remembered this. We know what Merlin said: he didn't want to put Arthur in this position, to have to make the choice of life or death. But I believe there was still this deep seated fear that his years of service and council would never be enough to out weigh the death sentence of being a sorcerer in Camelot.

I adore how the Merlin fandom is so active even after so many years of the show being over. Like. Do y'all realize most fandoms would be dead by this point?

Idk how but we have literally managed to live off of spite and pure queer energy and I think this is the epitomy of what the Merlin fandom is.

Because we've head canoned Arthur's return to a point we have completely rejected the idea of giving up on these two lovable disasters. But that's the thing. If the ending was a happily ever after, the fandom probably wouldn't have been alive and kicking for as long as it has.

We have lived on for the sheer purpose of giving those two an eternal happy ending that they never canonically got.

not enough people talk about how personal it is that Merlin and arthur are nearly the same height. thus far I have pretty much only been intimate with people who are within centimeters of my height and god it’s something. we can make eye contact accidentally all the time. across the room, right next to each other, doesn’t matter, we always lock eyes. when we get close it’s anyone’s game. we could kiss. we could back away. we could press each other against a wall. we can feel each others words before we ever touch. every time Merlin is adjusting Arthur’s armor, shoving him around, fixing his clothes, he is right there in his space, eye level, and it’s anyone’s game. It just gets me every damn time like this is soooo personal to me
