Can We Talk About the ‘Evil Bigoted Snape Gave a Werewolf Lecture to Hurt Remus’ Discourse—Because Y’all Are Missing the Point

People love to drag Snape for giving that werewolf lecture during Lupin’s year at Hogwarts. It’s often cited as one of the top reasons to hate him—because “Lupin was taking Wolfsbane and was harmless.” But let’s actually unpack that, because that logic falls apart real fast.

First of all: Lupin wasn’t harmless. He just wasn’t mindless.

Those are two very different things.

The Wolfsbane Potion doesn’t stop the transformation. It just lets him keep his human mind when he transforms into a physically dangerous, magically enhanced predator. He says it himself:

“As long as I take it in the week preceding the full moon, I keep my mind when I transform.” - Remus Lupin

So yeah, keeping his mind helps—but it doesn’t make him safe. He still has all the inherent physical dangers of a werewolf: the monstrous strength, enhanced speed, claws, fangs, and bite force that can overpower any human. And if he chose to bite someone? The potion wouldn’t stop the infection from being passed on.

Now let’s zoom in on Snape’s position here.

In order to be okay with Lupin teaching, Snape would’ve had to do something that’s completely antithetical to his character: trust a man he hates, a man he believes is both dangerous and morally compromised, to prioritize the safety of children. That’s just not who Snape is—and it’s not who he has been shaped to be.

This is a man whose entire personality is shaped by trauma. His childhood, his school years, the werewolf attack—all of it. And on top of that, he spent years as a true DE then a spy. He’s seen firsthand that danger doesn’t always come with red flags and scary music. Sometimes it’s quiet. Sometimes it’s someone you’ve known for years. like Peter Pettigrew.

Snape knows that betrayal doesn’t just come from cartoon villains—it comes from people everyone else thinks are harmless. People like Lupin.

From Snape’s perspective, Lupin isn’t just “a risky case.” He’s an unreliable and potentially compromised individual who is keeping a life-threatening secret from the entire student body. Add that to the fact that Snape:

Was nearly killed by this exact werewolf in what he believes was a targeted attack.

Has never had a personal reason to trust Lupin—only reasons to distrust him.

Genuinely believes Lupin may be helping Sirius Black, who everyone still thinks is a mass murderer.

Believes Dumbledore is biased toward this specific Gryffindor friend group and prioritizes them over basic safety.

Has spent most of his life at Hogwarts watching the DADA post destroy whoever fills it.

Yes, Snape trusts Dumbledore on a practical level—but he also thinks Dumbledore plays favorites. And when it comes to the Marauders? Snape has every reason to believe Dumbledore’s judgment is compromised. So what does he do?

He does the one thing he can do: teach students how dangerous werewolves really are.

Because in Snape’s mind, the worst-case scenario isn’t just some abstract “Lupin might slip up” thing. It’s this:

What if Lupin is working with Sirius Black?

What if they’re planning something on the full moon—when Lupin is transformed and no one can stop him? The least he can do is prepare the students for what they possibly could do during an attack. 

Snape doesn’t know the full truth. He doesn’t know about the betrayal swap. He just knows that someone from that group already betrayed the Potters. And even Sirius believed it could’ve been Lupin at one point—that’s why they made Peter the Secret-Keeper. So from Snape’s perspective? Trusting Lupin isn’t just a gamble. It’s asking for disaster.

And honestly, let’s not pretend we knew Lupin was trustworthy when we first read or watched this. He was likable, sure. But likable ≠ safe.

Also, let’s talk about this take that teaching about werewolves is “inherently discriminatory.” They’re cursed beings who become dangerous, contagious monsters once a month. Teaching kids to be aware of that isn’t hate. It’s survival. Especially when you’re a trauma survivor yourself, trying to protect students from the kind of danger that nearly killed you. The way the ministry treats werewolves is awful and the way they deal with them is both incompetent and discriminatory, but as I said, in my other post about analogies for discrimination, the difference is werewolves are actually dangerous (unlike other REAL oppressed groups).

Was it harsh? Sure. Snape’s delivery always is. But was it unjustified? No.

Because in the end, a werewolf did transform on school grounds. Near students. Uncontrolled. Alone. And it wasn’t because he was evil—it was because he forgot his potion after being emotionally rattled. That’s all it took.

What if that moment had come just a little later? What if he’d still been inside the castle when it hit? If this story weren’t aimed at kids, Lupin def would’ve been written as tragically killing someone. Easily. And again: not because he’s a monster in the moral sense—but because he’s a monster in the literal one.

You can be a decent man and still be dangerous. Two things can be true at once.

So yeah—was there some pettiness involved? Probably. He’s a petty guy. But that wasn’t the root of it. The root was trauma, caution, and a desperate attempt to do something to protect students in a situation he had no control over.

she would have loved him if she could have ever met him, and he would have loved her.

I know that, had she lived, this little squirt would have been glued to her side. she probably knew Paz, even distantly, due to them both being pilots. she might have even known the kid as a tiny little infant.

and then the war is over and... no one wants him. no one wants to take care of him. it's seen as a chore. but she can't help, even if she never considered herself to be a motherly type, not with the cards she had previously been dealt, but to go see the little thing in whatever makeshift nursery they she set up for him. to place her finger in his little hand and feel him squeeze it with all his tiny might.

she doesn't have to be his mom, she tells herself, just his fun tia, or maybe his badass big sister.

she sings to him little Spanish lullabies she remembers from her own childhood, and dances with him in the nursery when she manages to scrape up some old audio files. calls him by the middle name he was given, cause Javier had a better ring than Miles (she wonders who decided on that. can't decide wish irks her more). seeing that boy smile every time she entered the room, arms reaching for her, it makes her day.

as he gets bigger, starting to walk, holding her hand, then running, running away, her heart briefly fluttering with melancholy, before he runs right back into her arms. he starts to speak, and tries his best to say her name, with all his might, before giving up and calling her di-di.

he follows her around. she puts little braids and beads and feathers in her hair. he clings to her legs. she takes him flying.

he inherits her fire. Quaritch can't be found in his face or his eyes. all anyone can see is Trudy.

she'd raise hell for her baby. brother. boy. son.

What if Spider was Spider-Man?

Just got done watching Spider-verse and now I can't help but think about Spider as the Pandoran version of Spider-Man.

-) While practicing his archery a mile away from Hell's Gate, Spider is bitten by a strange arachnid creature unlike anything catalogued on Pandora: Eight eyes, a small bioluminescent body, and too many limbs that skitter up his arm too fast for him to bat away with his bow.

-) The pain on his upper arm is searing, cold venom is flooding his system, and his body is shaking. Spider knows he should tell Jake and get himself checked out, but Jake is spending time with his family, and Spider doesn't want to bother him. Instead, Spider stumbles back to Hell's Gate alone, locks his bedroom door, and sleeps for days, plagued by fevered dreams of glowing silk threads covering his entire body in a cocoon and the feeling of being watched by all eight eyes.

-) Eywa does not speak, but he feels her. The bite was no freak accident. It was an acknowledgement. A transformation.

-) The mutation amplifies his strength, speed, and reflexes to rival young Na’vi. He can leap through the trees with uncanny grace, run silently across branches, and wrestle his siblings with ease.

-) Spider hits a sudden, aggressive growth spurt. His bones stretch, he shoots up like a weed, and his posture shifts. He grows into a broad-shouldered, coiled force of nature in just a few days. Norm jokingly asks, "Did Jake feed you a special protein powder?" But Spider just shrugs, quietly avoiding the question with lowered eyes.

-) Against RDA soldiers, Spider is terrifying. He moves faster than their sensors can track, weaving traps of glowing silk webbing that strangle, immobilize, or slice. He’s even developed kill zones in different parts of the vast forest, leading enemies there like a spider luring prey into its web.

-) Spider's methods of killing are precise. He drops from a tree in total silence, snaps necks with his super strength, and webs the body into the trees as a warning. In moments of desperation, he uses a special venom-infused bite passed down from the spider that changed him. It paralyzes instantly and causes intense hallucinations. Some unfortunate survivors go mad from the encounter.

-) Spider takes no pleasure in killing, nor does he look forward to it, but when he kills, it is swift, silent, and deliberate. Spider kills because he knows that every RDA life he spares will cost dozens of innocent Na’vi or creatures. To show mercy is to be complicit because these people will never stop.

-) Even Lo’ak gives Spider a curious once-over and mutters, "You been lifting boulders or something, bro?"

-) Spider wants so badly to tell everyone about his abilities, but he fears that Neytiri will misunderstand and see him as a threat. No one trusts him as far as they can throw him, and as far as Spider is concerned, he's on his own.

-) When Spider connects his webbing to a living thing: beast, plant, even another person, he feels a tug in his chest, a strange warmth in his mind. It’s not language, but sensation. A feeling. Spider’s webbing can read an enemy's next move, like a spider sensing a fly tremble in its web. He wraps it around their weapons, and in that fleeting connection, he feels intention. He dodges before they shoot. He moves before they do.

-) Spider can breathe the air, but keeps his mask on to avoid suspicion.

-) His "spidey suit" is made from his webbing, and he even wears a handmade mask to hide his identity. At first, the mask was entirely blank until Spider decided to draw eight eyes on it, giving him a more intimidating look.

-) The cat is out of the bag when Spider uses his webbing to "heal" Netyam's injury, but that's a story for another day,
