The NOLADrinks Show – Turning Tables – 2021Ep1

On this edition of The NOLADrinks Show, we’re back with new shows here in 2021! To start things off, we have an important conversation with the team from Turning Tables. The program is “changing the face of hospitality by cultivating leadership and creating a model for equitable access to career pathways.” We talk with program leaders, including founder and director, Touré Folkes, educators, and students, both past and present.

Pictured above – From left front row – Alana Peck, Touré Folkes, Deniseea Taylor. From left back row – Bryan Dias, Roxy Eve Narvaez, Jeri Guilford, Geoffrey Wilson, and Tim Stevens.
The NOLADrinks Show – Turning Tables – 2021Ep1
In our featured interview, taped at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum, we talk with several participants in the Turning Tables program, including Touré Folkes, who started the program here in New Orleans.
It is a terrific organization that “advocates for diversity, visibility, and inclusivity in the hospitality industry by providing mentorship, educational tools, and platforms to support and sustain the Black and Brown communities of New Orleans.”
Turning Tables recently graduated their second class of students, called “externs.” We talk with some of the externs who participated in the program. We also talk with some of the educators and mentors that bring their wide-ranging experience and knowledge to the fore.
Also, we touch on the experiential learning aspect of the program, the emphasis on health and wellness, and the camaraderie and kinship that is fostered through participating. An important part of our conversation is the need for improved representation and equity in the hospitality industry (and, of course, society at-large.)
Our guests share inspiring stories and thoughts related to their journeys, their motivations for getting involved in Turning Tables, and how they are building their own table, not just seeking a seat at existing ones. We talk about how the program has evolved from the first iteration, as well.
During most of our featured interview, we rotate guests in and out of the chat. But everyone sticks around for our podcast-only segment, “Another Shot with NOLADrinks,” where we continue the conversation with the whole group!
Our guests include Touré Folkes, Deniseea Taylor, Geoffrey Wilson, Tim Stevens, Roxy Eve Narvaez, Jeri Guilford, and Alana Peck. Thanks to them for the time, insight, and inspiration!
This show is part of our ongoing “Sustainability Series.”
You can subscribe to, stream, and download The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias podcast using the links and player at the top of the post! Thanks to the Southern Food and Beverage Museum for hosting us!
Cheers and Be Well, You All!

The NOLADrinks Show – Wines of the Southwest USA – Dec20Ep6

On this week’s The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we chat with author Jessica Dupuy. She recently wrote a book called The Wines of the Southwest USA. It covers the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. We discuss these regions and learn more about her publication.
Please note – we held the release of the podcast version of this and a few other great shows (last one – on to new 2021 shows!) so that they could be included in the relaunch of The Nitty Grits Podcast Network – the podcast network connected to the Southern Food and Beverage Museum and the National Food and Beverage Foundation.

Pictured above – Jessica Dupuy, author of Wines of the Southwest USA on the wine industries in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas.
The NOLADrinks Show – Wines of the Southwest USA – Dec20Ep6
In our featured interview, we speak with author, Jessica Dupuy. She is based in Austin, Texas and writes on various topics including food, wine, spirits, and the people connected to those things. She recently published a book, “The Wines of the Southwest USA.”
The book covers the wine regions found in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. Though many of us may not be familiar with the wines and the wine industry in these four states, there are a lot of exciting things happening in each. We discuss the book, the challenges in putting it together, and give you a snapshot of the places it covers.
It is a fascinating conversation discussing these regions. Each has a long-standing history of winemaking, which we discuss. But it has only been in recent years, for the most part, that their respective industries have grown and made great strides in both quality and approach.
We talk about how the industry in each state has developed. This includes touching on the journeys they have taken to produce good wines based on a better understanding of their terroir, learning from other regions, and taking advantage of their realities. Additionally, we chat about the market for these wines (in all four states, the vast majority of the wine is consumed locally) and what the current landscape looks like.
Along the way, we learn about Jessica’s background and talk about the book. It is an excellent guide that informs readers on the regions, terroir, and producers. It is a terrific resource for those looking to explore these up-and-coming winemaking states!

Please note – we held the release of the podcast version of this and a few other great shows (we’re almost caught up!) so that they could be included in the relaunch of The Nitty Grits Podcast Network – the podcast network connected to the Southern Food and Beverage Museum and the National Food and Beverage Foundation.

The NOLADrinks Show – Black Bourbon Society and Diversity Distilled – Dec20Ep4
In our featured interview, we talk with the founder and CEO of the Black Bourbon Society (BBS), Samara Davis, and her husband, Armond Davis, the organization’s COO.
We discuss the history and mission of the organization. The Black Bourbon Society is a membership-organization that “bridges the gap between the spirits industry and African American bourbon enthusiasts.” They do so by using their social media platforms, events, education, and exclusive excursions.
Importantly, they seek to “challenge traditional direct consumer marketing standards by curating experiences that genuinely engage [their] unique demographic, and advocate for diversity and inclusion through speaking events engagements and consulting within the spirits industry.”
Given their model and emphasis on event-driven activities, we discuss how they have adapted their programs to the current pandemic situation. We discuss the ongoing importance and relevance of their work. This includes some key ideas and dynamics that relate to marketing and how the spirits industry often misses the mark when messaging to African Americans.
Also, we talk about the non-profit organization they started in the not-too-distance past called, “Diversity Distilled.” It’s a terrific program that looks to advance people of color throughout the spirits and hospitality industries. They engage in consulting, training, market research and more striving to create fair and equitable opportunities for people of all backgrounds working or seeking to work in these industries.
Samara and Armond stick around for our podcast-only segment, “Another Shot with NOLADrinks,” where we continue the chat and talk about bourbon! You can subscribe to, stream, and download The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias podcast using the links and player at the top of the post.

The NOLADrinks Show – Building a New Table – Dec20Ep1
We kick things off letting you know what’s up on this week’s show and some things to look for coming down the line.

We close things out on our “Parting Shot” letting you know about the Nitty Grits Network, a relaunched podcast network that is part of the Southern Food Beverage and Museum. Of course, part of the show is tasting various expressions from these terrific and diverse producers, learning about their stories, and how and where they fit into the overall picture of Indian spirits. We talk about the high level of quality these producers seek to achieve, often against a backdrop of mass-produced liquor of lesser quality. We discuss the markets for these spirits, as well.

During this segment we’re also joined by Jane Campbell of Glass Revolution Imports, Amrut’s US importer; Vignaraj Gadvi, a colleague of Vrushab; and New Orleans-based spirits broker and educator, Phil Minissale of PM Brokerage, which represents Amrut and Kafi Feni in the NOLA market.

Then, we have our featured interview. We welcome Umberto Luchini co-onwer of Blood x Sweat x Tears Vodka located in Eugene, Oregon along with Ledy Vankavage, senior legislative attorney for Best Friends Animal Society.
We discuss issues connected to animal welfare and the programs Best Friends offers across the US. Among other things, they seek to reduce and eliminate the euthanization of shelter animals. Pictured above – Mr. Pickles, a rescue pit bull, of Blood x Sweat x Tears Vodka.
Why vodka and animal welfare? The founder and head distiller of BST Vodka, Ben Green, has a connection to the cause. This is due, in large part, to his special rescue pit bull, Mr. Pickles. The company actively supports and fundraises for Best Friends.
Ledy and Umberto stick around for our podcast-only segment, “Another Shot with NOLADrinks.” We talk a bit further about the issue of animal welfare. But, we mainly sip on and learn more about Blood x Sweat x Tears Vodka.

We’re back with our annual preview show for Tales of the Cocktail 2020! We talk with Caroline Rosen, president of the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation. We discuss some of their changes and challenges and what to look for with this upcoming (now) virtual event!

Pictured above from left – Caroline Rosen of the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation and Bryan Dias of The NOLADrinks Show at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum.
The NOLADrinks Show – Tales of the Cocktail 2020 Annual Preview – Sep20Ep1
We kick things off letting you know about this episode as well as some of our upcoming action. We also mention how our thoughts are with the communities suffering from the effects of Hurricane Laura (which struck not long before we taped this featured interview. This was, of course, all recorded before Hurricane Sally and our sentiments are the same in that regard – please help where you can!)
Then, it’s off to the Southern Food and Beverage Museum (SoFAB) for our featured interview. We’re joined by Caroline Rosen who is the president of the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation. “Tales” is an organization that supports and educates the spirits and bartending industries offering wide-ranging programs and events.
We discuss the organization and, importantly, how they have adapted and faced challenges here in 2020 due to the pandemic. A key change has been pivoting their centerpiece event, “Tales of the Cocktail” from an in-person event that normally takes place in New Orleans each July to a global virtual event taking place online from September 21 through 24. It is the world’s largest spirits and bartending professional conference in the world.

Additionally, we talk about some of the other challenges the organization and industry has faced. Reflective of this, Tales’ offerings at the event include seminars on dealing the current climate that has been extraordinarily tough on the bartending community and many spirits producers.
Though covid is on the minds (and in the programming) of everyone connected to Tales, important industry conversations on social issues such as inclusivity, sustainability, and more remain a critical part of the event and Tales’ overall mission. Of course, education on spirits, bartending, and professional development are still a part of the event’s and organization’s core.
Caroline sticks around for our exclusive podcast-only segment, “Another Shot with NOLADrinks.” We carry on the conversation and sip on some (much needed whiskey)!
We close things out with our Parting Shot – special shout-out to our friends at Jeff “Beachbum” Berry’s Latitude 29 who lost a team/family member recently.

We are fresh off our summer break and back with new shows! We start letting you know what’s up on this show and about our next one – our annual Tales of the Cocktail preview show!
Then, it’s off to our featured interview from our home studio. We welcome Mac McDonald and Phil Long of the Association of African American Vintners (AAAV). Mac is the organization’s founder and Phil is its current president. Also, Mac is the owner and winemaker of Vision Cellars located in Sonoma County and Phil is the owner and winemaker of Longevity Wines found in the Livermore Valley (both are in Northern California.)
We discuss the history of the organization, including its founding in 2002 by Mac. We also talk about what the organization seeks to achieve – building awareness and creating opportunity across all segments of the wine industry. Phil and Mac discuss some of the numbers related to African American vintners, economies of scale in smaller wineries, and much more.

Phil and Mac stick around for our podcast-only segment, “Another Shot with NOLADrinks.” For the most part, during this segment, we talk wine! This includes a chat about their programs, consumer preferences, and a lot more viticultural and vinicultural conversation!
We close things out with our Parting Shot talking about Jackie Robinson Day in Major League Baseball and more.
The map below shows the location of Longevity Wines and Vision Cellars. Please be aware that, at the time of our taping, their tasting rooms were not open due to covid and the wildfires in California were not as widespread. However, you can order their terrific wines online or get them at a retailer near you!
