View of the Hospital on Roosevelt Island. During the mid-1800s the hospital was home to ailing individuals mainly with smallpox. The idea was to quarantine them from the healthy New York population. Officially closing around 1950, the hospital stands as a ruin, an eerie reminder of the lives claimed here. The ruin is maintained as a city landmark by the Department of the Interior since 1975.
