Today's song is This is Your Life from the Fight Club soundtrack cause "you are not a beautiful and unique snowflake, you are the same decaying organic matter as everything else" is one of my most favourite quotes. And, sort of fitting for what I'm about to talk about I guess.
Onto today's ramblings. I just started (well, it starts April 1 but I've started reading already) a Prose Forms course online. Now. Excluding my intensive care course, I haven't had any formal schooling since I graduated from nursing in 2011 lol.
I have ALWAYS wanted an arts degree. I've wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. And I gotta say, I'm so glad I waited and did nursing first, grew up (a lot), and experienced a lot of adult life and the real world.
When I was 18 I was well, young and naive and from a tiny, redneck town run by baby boomers. But more than that, I was so clinically depressed and emotionally flat I would never have understood or appreciated all the nuance in literature.
I just read Hemingway's short story "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" and I was immediately hit by the sense of existential dread. I didn't equate that to the profound loss of faith in a higher power, (a) because I don't know a GD thing about history and (b) I'm already quite nihilistic, but I still got that feeling of "everything is meaningless"
I would never have understood any of that ~15 years ago! Without nursing, and ICU in particular, this wouldn't have had nearly as profound an effect on me.
Now that I understand Hemingway's overarching nihilist theme, I'll have to give The Sun Also Rises another go

Hey y'all! Today on PB's blog about nothing- the NYC Midnight microfiction challenge! By some small miracle, I made it through the first round! (We retain all rights to the stories, so I might put it up in a separate post) I thought I was done in by my assigned category (drama) then. Welp. This round, I have comedy. Fucking COMEDY. Hi, aspiring HORROR WRITER here. I haven't written anything light hearted in my life. So I'm spending today struggling my ass off to get a perfectly polished COMEDY microfiction written and submitted by 2300h.
Today's song is another Tom Waits treasure. The man just has a way with creepy and I love him for it.

Hey y'all!
My little sister surprised me by coming for a visit for my birthday! (She lives in NS w the rest of my family, my husband and I live in MB) Saturday night my husband told me he got called into work for multiple stabbings (trauma surgeon, so it happens semi-regularly) but had actually gone to the airport to pick her up! I haven't seen her in ~a year and a half, she always visits for March break and in 2020 ended up basically just stuck hanging out in our house in Toronto for 10 days because covid had just really started ramping up.
So we've done some shopping and eaten some good food, and today we are just relaxing at home because the weather has been poo. I am working on the second draft of a short story for a flash competition (hopefully I'll eventually remember which one it's for 😂)
Today's song is School's Out by Alice Cooper because my sister forgot to take her makeup off before her shower last night and was a dead ringer for Alice Cooper afterward. She's only 17 so she didn't know who that was and was deeply offended when she looked him up. I laughed so hard I could barely breathe 😂

Hey y'all. It's been a hot minute since I posted, and a wild almost-year in the interim.
The aforementioned thoracic spine x-ray showed a t8 compression fracture. Basically, one of the vertebrae in my spine was crushed. I won't bore you with the details, but it sucked, a lot.
Then my husband got a job, so we left Toronto in the spring and now live in Winnipeg, which has been (shockingly) incredibly good for my mental health. Did you know it's the third sunniest city in Canada?
So now I'm a week and a half away from going back to work for the first time in a year. I was medically cleared for work just before we left TO, but my back is still ... finicky. Here's hoping all goes well.
With moving and subsequentIy buying a house, I kinda fell out of writing and really doing anything at all besides unpacking, decorating, and a shitton of house maintenance stuff that seems to keep popping up at every turn.
Probably a week ago, I saw a Twitter post about a flash horror fiction contest (>500 words! *clutches pearls*). A few days after that, the opening line just sort of popped into my head. And just like that, I wrote flash fiction for the first time ever and I'm going to submit it (also for the first time ever)
And now I'm falling back in love with writing. Let's see how long it lasts this time?
Today's song is Visitors in the Night by Nox Arcana. If you ever want to be wholly creeped out in less than a minute (and I do), this song is for you!

Today on PB's blog about nothing, I'm going to blather on about whatever my mind comes up with while I wait in this insane line for an x-ray of my thoracic spine.
Today's song is Control by Halsey. It came up on one Spotify Halloween playlist or another and I just love the whole feel of it.
Let's talk about Halloween plans! I don't have anything solid yet, not much exciting to be done in a pandemic. I bought my husband and I kigurumi to wear (Stitch and Agent P, respectively) and I just ordered a bunch of ~spooky~ wine with names like Ghost Pines and Casillero Del Diablo. I always do a small ritual to give thanks, and this year with a BLUE MOON feels like the time to put on a big to-do!
Otherwise, I will probably force my husband to watch some classic slashers with me, and eat something delicious, although I haven't decided what yet.
How are you staying ~spooky~ in these covid times?

Today on PB's blog about nothing, I'm gonna talk about one of my tattoos 🤷🏻‍♀️
Also, today's song is Every 27 Years by Benjamin Wallfisch, which we all know from the IT remake (I fucking love that movie so, SO much) It's constantly stuck in my head, and is often the first song I play when I'm trying to get into a good writing headspace.
I've now accumulated 8 tattoos, and no I won't talk about all of them separately, but I'm gonna talk about this one today.
It was an artist's portfolio piece (@zeropointtattoo on IG, you can see the credit in the photo) that I snapped up pretty quickly. The whole thing took about 6 hours, the first session was 4.5 for the outline and shading, and then 1.5 hours for the colour. It's my 7th and largest tattoo, and I'm obsessed with it. My artist is also one of the coolest people I've ever met, and I actually went back to him for my birthday this year and got my 8th tattoo, which will get its own post, because it's one of my few custom pieces that has a lot of meaning behind it.
I loved this design immediately because it's pretty badass, and also because it's reminiscent of my two favorite series- the snake for Harry Potter, because I'm a Slytherin, and the rose for Stephen King's Dark Tower.
Now, just to be clear, and I will try to repeat this whenever I make HP posts- I am, of course, referring to the children's fantasy series that has no author- I do not align myself with, nor support, she-who-must-not-be-named's horrific TERF-y bullshit. Trans rights are human rights. I see you, your existence and your identity are valid, you are a loved and worthy person.

So I read an article recently that said if you're an aspiring writer you should have a blog. It went on to say that it should be about something other than writing- some random topic or hobby you're good at / have knowledge of.
Well.
First, I am not deluded into thinking I have anything important to say or worth listening to.
Second, I don't really have hobbies, except writing 🤣 which I also know absolutely nothing about. I love cosplay, and maybe I'll talk about that a bit, but I'm a total amateur. My knowledge base is primarily medical, and I don't want to talk about that either 😬
But, it's not like I have something better to do with my time; I'm off work with a back injury and I live in Plague Central.
And thus begins my blog about nothing 🤷🏻‍♀️
