Why Becoming an OPPA! Community Partner is More Than Just a Sponsorship
At On Pitch Performing Arts (OPPA!), we’re not just about putting on great shows — we’re about making a difference in our community. One of the ways we do this is through our incredible Community Partner program. You may be thinking, “What makes this different from a traditional sponsorship?” Let us show you why joining us as a community partner is so much more.
1. It’s About Genuine Community Involvement
At OPPA!, we believe that the arts have the power to bring people together and enrich lives. As a community partner, you’re not just slapping your logo on a program or poster; you’re actively helping us build a space where creativity, education, and entertainment thrive. For small business owners, this means you’re part of something bigger than a transaction — you’re part of creating magical moments that uplift our community.
When people attend an OPPA! performance or drop their kids off for a theatre class, they’re not just engaging with us — they’re engaging with you, the businesses that help make it all happen.
2. Positive Brand Association
There’s something special about supporting local arts. It tells your customers that you care about the same things they do — family, creativity, and community growth. By partnering with OPPA!, your business becomes a champion of these values. You’ll be aligned with a thriving arts organization that people love and trust. When you invest in OPPA!, you invest in the community — and your customers notice.

Our audience is your audience. By becoming a community partner, your business will be featured in our playbills, on our social media channels, and across our website. This means your brand gets in front of thousands of local families, theatre-goers, and volunteers. It’s a fantastic way to promote your business to people who are already invested in supporting local arts and culture. And we don’t just stop at logos — we’ll share your story too, because we know that your business is as unique as the people behind it.
4. Create Memorable Experiences
One of the exciting perks of being a community partner is the opportunity to create unique experiences for your team, customers, or clients. Whether it's inviting them to a performance, hosting an employee appreciation event at our theatre, or offering VIP treatment at one of our shows, we can help you make it happen. This adds a personal touch to your partnership with us, building stronger relationships between your business and the community.
5. Boost Local Growth
The arts don’t just entertain — they drive economic activity. When people attend OPPA! shows, they’re spending time and money in the local area. Whether it’s grabbing a meal before a show, shopping nearby, or meeting up with friends for coffee afterward, our performances help generate foot traffic for businesses like yours. As a community partner, you’re contributing to a thriving local economy, all while supporting something meaningful.

We Have a Huge Problem in Community Theatre
Tumblr media
Auditioning is a vital part of the community theatre process, and for those of us who do this for the love of the craft, it’s important that the time we spend on a production is worth it. That’s why honesty on audition forms is absolutely crucial—not just for you as an actor, but for the production team as well.
Let’s face it, in Utah, we’re fortunate to have a lot of community theatre available, but that’s also created a bit of a “show-chasing” attitude. Actors sometimes sign up for multiple auditions without fully committing to any particular one. This might seem harmless on the surface, but it creates huge casting problems. Let me explain why.
At OPPA!, when we send out a cast list, we send it publicly without asking each individual if they’re going to accept the role first. Why? Because we believe in honesty and communication. If an actor is putting something on their audition form, we trust they mean it. It’s about transparency—on both sides.
The issue arises when actors put down they are willing to accept any role, only to later decline when they don’t get the part they wanted. And while I understand the thought process behind this—maybe you're worried the director won’t see you as willing or flexible—it’s actually hurting your chances more than you think. Directors see willingness as a good thing and might even think you’re perfect for the ensemble, which, by the way, is just as important as any lead role. In fact, you might miss out on that role you truly wanted because you weren’t clear about your intentions from the start.
Here’s the truth: Honesty is key. The director's job is to assemble the best possible cast, which means fitting pieces together like a puzzle. Hours go into casting decisions, and they're not made lightly. So when an actor declines a role they’ve indicated they’d accept, it can throw a wrench in the entire production process. This lack of transparency doesn’t just affect the current show—it can lead to future hesitation when it comes to casting you because there’s a lack of trust.
Now, I want to be clear—there are absolutely valid reasons to decline a role post-casting, such as emergencies, job changes, or family issues. But those situations are different from declining a role simply because it wasn’t what you had in mind. The latter leaves everyone involved—directors, production teams, and you—frustrated.
I don’t keep a blacklist as a producer. I don’t believe in that. People work differently with different teams, and just because someone didn’t mesh well with me doesn’t mean they won’t be great with someone else. But I do believe in commitment and honesty, and I urge all actors to approach auditions with transparency.
So, actors, I beg of you: Be honest on your audition forms. Don’t try to seem more willing than you actually are, and don’t assume directors will “respect” you more for being flexible. The opposite is true—they may hesitate to cast you again because they don’t know if you’ll follow through.
Auditioning can be scary, and there are plenty of opportunities, but we’re all here because we love the art form. Let’s honor that love by building trust between actors and production teams. Be clear about what you’re willing to accept so that we can all create something incredible together.

The Price of Applause: More Than Just Lights, Camera, Action!
Tumblr media
When people think of community theatre, they often imagine the excitement of live performances, the camaraderie among cast members, and the joy of seeing neighbors on stage. What they don’t often see is the intricate web of costs involved in bringing a show to life. As much as we thrive on the passion and volunteer efforts that make community theatre a reality, the financial side of things plays a crucial role in every production. Let’s take a behind-the-scenes look at where the money goes in community theatre.
1. The Building and Utilities
It all starts with the building. Whether it's a modest performance space or a more elaborate theatre, rent or mortgage payments must be covered. And just like any business, theatres incur monthly utility bills—electricity, water, heating, and cooling. Running rehearsals, tech days, and performances requires keeping the lights on, often for many hours a day. Plus, there's the need for Wi-Fi, phone systems, and insurance—ensuring that both the building and its occupants are protected.
2. Staffing
While many involved in community theatre donate their time, some staff positions must be paid. This includes technical directors, lighting and sound designers, stage managers, and box office staff. In some cases, directors, choreographers, and music directors receive stipends for their time and expertise. On top of that, janitorial services are essential to keep the space clean and comfortable, especially during a run of performances. House managers and ushers are also often compensated for managing audience experience and safety.
3. Costumes, Props, and Set Design
One of the more visible expenses for any production is the creation of the world on stage. Costumes, props, and sets require extensive materials and craftsmanship. Even in a community theatre setting, audiences expect high-quality visuals. Depending on the era or fantastical nature of the show, costume designers need to source fabrics, wigs, shoes, and accessories. For set design, lumber, paint, lighting rigs, and special effects all contribute to creating the right atmosphere for a show. And don’t forget about props—everything from swords and teapots to fake money and books.
4. Royalties, Music, and Scripts
One of the lesser-known but significant expenses for theatres is the cost of licensing a show. Every play or musical is owned by a rights holder, and theatres must pay royalties to legally perform a show. These fees vary greatly depending on the show’s popularity and the size of the audience, but they can easily range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Additionally, scripts and musical scores need to be purchased or rented for every cast and crew member. For musicals, the rights to use the musical scores and orchestrations are an additional cost.
5. Marketing and Promotions
The success of any theatre production depends on butts in seats, and getting the word out requires more than just word of mouth. Flyers, posters, social media campaigns, email blasts, and occasionally paid advertising (whether digital or print) all contribute to the marketing budget. Some theatres may hire a marketing director or outsource to a professional service, adding to the overall cost.
6. House Management
During performances, a whole new set of costs comes into play. Ushers need to manage audience flow, concessions might need to be stocked, and someone must oversee ticketing. Box office software or staff often come with their own expenses. Additionally, security and safety personnel are essential, ensuring that audiences and performers alike are safe and the space is compliant with local regulations.
7. Insurance and Rights
Theatre productions involve moving parts—literally. Sets, heavy equipment, and packed houses mean insurance is a must. Liability insurance ensures that in case of accidents or property damage, the theatre is protected. There may also be insurance policies covering costumes and sets, ensuring that expensive items are covered in case of theft, loss, or damage.
8. Janitorial and Maintenance Costs
Though not glamorous, keeping the theatre clean and operational is crucial. Between shows, janitors clean bathrooms, sweep floors, and ensure that every space is tidy for the next set of audience members. Additionally, regular maintenance of the theatre—repairing HVAC systems, plumbing, and the stage itself—adds to the running costs.
9. Rehearsal Space and Technical Needs
Rehearsals often occur for months before a show opens. In many cases, theatres don’t own rehearsal spaces and need to rent them. Even if the theatre space is used, the time required for rehearsals still ties up resources like lighting, sound, and air conditioning, adding to the utility bill. Tech rehearsals—when lighting, sound, and sets are fine-tuned—use even more resources, with all elements of the show running simultaneously.
10. Miscellaneous Costs
From feeding the cast and crew during long rehearsals to providing transportation for large sets, there are always unexpected costs. This can include last-minute purchases of missing costume pieces or tools to fix broken set elements. Every production has a contingency budget for those unpredictable moments.
Final Thoughts
While community theatre is driven by passion and love for the arts, it’s important to recognize the extensive financial commitment that goes into every production. Ticket sales often cover only a portion of these expenses, which is why donations, sponsorships, and grants are critical to keeping community theatre alive and thriving. It’s a labor of love, and while the spotlight may be on the actors, every single person and resource behind the scenes plays a part in making magic happen.
Next time you attend a community theatre show, know that your ticket isn’t just paying for a seat—it’s supporting an entire ecosystem dedicated to bringing art and joy to the community.

For something more modern and uplifting, you’ll love The Prom, a heartwarming and joyous celebration of self-expression and acceptance. Perfect for anyone looking to laugh, cry, and maybe even dance along in their seats.
Later in the summer, we’ll bring Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to life. It’s a musical that appeals to all ages, with its dazzling costumes, unforgettable score, and family-friendly story.
The fall brings the lovable You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, featuring everyone’s favorite Peanuts characters. It’s the perfect mix of nostalgia and feel-good moments that will delight audiences of all ages.
Finally, we close the main stage season with Little Shop of Horrors, a cult classic that combines horror, humor, and irresistible music. With its quirky characters and edge-of-your-seat suspense, it’s sure to be a highlight!
But the excitement doesn’t end with the Main Stage! Our Creators Stage productions bring an intimate and often experimental flavor to the mix. You can expect shows like the hilarious Tuna Does Vegas, the thought-provoking Silent Sky, the iconic musical Godspell, and the beloved southern classic Steel Magnolias. Each show on this stage offers something fresh, inventive, and unforgettable.
Plus, don’t forget about our Children’s Theatre programming. Whether it’s seeing your little ones take the stage in The Little Mermaid Jr or cheering on the older kids in Mean Girls Jr, OPPA! is the perfect place to foster a love for the arts in the next generation.
2. Incredible Value
With ticket prices increasing everywhere, finding affordable ways to enjoy quality entertainment is a challenge. OPPA! is proud to offer season tickets for the 2025 season at a price that makes live theater accessible to all.
For as little as $143, you can have access to a full year of unforgettable performances. That’s six Main Stage shows, four Creators Stage productions, and the chance to support our growing Children’s Theatre program—all at a fraction of what you’d pay elsewhere for entertainment of this caliber. Think about it: that’s less than the cost of one dinner out per show, but it provides lasting memories and moments that will stay with you long after the curtain falls.
But the value doesn’t stop there! With season tickets, you get additional perks like priority seating, discounted rates for additional tickets, and the flexibility to exchange tickets if your schedule changes. You’ll also have the peace of mind knowing that your favorite seats are reserved for every show. It’s an unbeatable deal that allows you to make the most of everything OPPA! has to offer.
3. Support Local Arts
When you purchase a ticket to one of OPPA!'s shows, you’re doing more than just enjoying a night out. You're investing in your community, supporting the local arts, and helping us fulfill our mission of inspiring, educating, and entertaining audiences.
As a non-profit organization, OPPA! thrives because of the generosity of patrons like you. Every ticket sold helps us continue to bring quality theater productions to Layton and the surrounding areas. It allows us to keep offering arts education programs for kids and adults, maintain our beautiful performance spaces, and provide opportunities for local artists to shine.
Your support is what keeps community theater alive. In a world where we are increasingly bombarded with digital entertainment, there's something uniquely powerful about live theater—the connection between performers and the audience, the collective energy of a shared experience, and the magic that happens on stage. None of this would be possible without people like you.
So, when you choose to buy season tickets or attend any of our shows, you’re not just filling a seat. You’re making a difference in the lives of your neighbors, friends, and family members who volunteer, perform, and create with us. Community Theatre: It's All About the People and the Passion!
Tumblr media
When you think of community theatre, you might picture small stages, local talent, and a whole lot of heart. And you’d be absolutely right! But there’s something more, something that sets community theatre apart from its big, professional cousin: the people. The people who make up community theatre aren’t just performers or crew members—they’re volunteers, neighbors, friends, and passionate individuals who pour their time, energy, and love into every production.
Unlike professional theatre, where actors and crew are (rightfully) paid for their craft, community theatre is often fueled by passion and a love for the arts. People aren’t here for a paycheck; they’re here because they genuinely love what they do. They’re willing to stay late after a full day of work, spend their weekends building sets, and even learn new skills on the fly just to help make the magic happen. That kind of dedication? It’s rare, and it’s beautiful. And it’s what makes community theatre such a vibrant, unique experience.
But the impact of community theatre goes far beyond the walls of the theatre itself. It’s not just about putting on a show; it’s about being a force for good in the community. The people involved in community theatre are the same people who shop at local stores, dine at nearby restaurants, and bring life to the area. When a theatre production is happening, you can feel the energy ripple through the neighborhood. Businesses around the theatre suddenly find themselves with a steady stream of customers—people grabbing a bite to eat before the show, families enjoying a treat after, or visitors exploring the town because they’ve come to see a friend or family member perform.
In many ways, community theatre changes the rhythm of life in the areas it touches. It creates a buzz, a sense of excitement, and a shared experience that brings people together. Local businesses thrive, and in turn, they support the theatre, creating a beautiful cycle of growth and collaboration. The arts, especially when rooted in the community, have a powerful way of lifting everyone up. They bring a sense of pride and identity, showing that something amazing can happen right in our backyard.
But the influence of community theatre goes even deeper. The arts have always been a force for good, a way to bring people together, challenge perspectives, and spark change. The people involved in community theatre aren’t just contributing to a show—they’re contributing to the health, happiness, and culture of their community. They’re showing that creativity and collaboration can thrive anywhere, that you don’t need a Broadway budget to make a difference, and that sometimes, the most impactful stories are the ones told right at home.
When you get involved in community theatre, you’re not just joining a cast or crew; you’re becoming part of something bigger. You’re helping to create a space where people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences can come together, learn from each other, and create something truly special. And in doing so, you’re helping to shape the community itself, making it a more vibrant, welcoming, and dynamic place to live.
So, the next time you think about community theatre, remember this: it’s not just about the performances or the applause. It’s about the people who make it all happen and the incredible impact they have on their community. It’s about the passion, the hard work, and the love that goes into every production, and the ripple effects that spread throughout the neighborhood. Community theatre is more than just entertainment—it’s a powerful force for good, and it’s all thanks to the people who make it come alive.
Here’s to the volunteers, the dreamers, the doers, and everyone who believes in the magic of community theatre. Together, we’re not just putting on shows; we’re making our communities better, one performance at a time.

Helping Your Child Navigate the Audition Process and Cast List Announcements
Tumblr media
The journey through auditions and cast list postings can be an emotional rollercoaster for kids—and for parents too. Whether your child is new to theatre or a seasoned performer, the anticipation and uncertainty of auditions can stir up a range of emotions. As a parent, your support and guidance are crucial in helping them navigate this exciting yet challenging time.
Understanding the Emotions
First and foremost, it's important to acknowledge that your child's feelings are valid. Auditions are high-stakes moments for kids who pour their heart and soul into a performance. When the cast list is finally posted, the outcome—whether it’s their dream role, a supporting part, or no role at all—can trigger a variety of emotions, from elation to disappointment.
Encourage your child to express how they’re feeling. Let them know it’s okay to be excited, nervous, or even a little sad if things didn’t turn out as they hoped. Your role is to listen, offer comfort, and help them process these emotions constructively.
Emphasizing That Every Role Matters
One of the most valuable lessons kids can learn from theatre is that every role, no matter the size, is important to the success of the show. The ensemble creates the world of the play, supporting the story and leading characters. Often, the experience of working together with peers, regardless of the role, is where the real magic happens.
Help your child understand that being part of a production is a team effort. Explain that the director casts the show in a way that brings out the best in everyone and ensures the entire production shines. This can be an opportunity for your child to develop new skills, make new friends, and contribute to something bigger than themselves.
Dealing with Disappointment
If your child doesn’t get the role they wanted, it’s natural for them to feel disappointed. Here are some strategies to help them cope:
Acknowledge Their Feelings: Let them know it’s okay to be upset. Encourage them to talk about what they’re feeling and reassure them that their emotions are normal.
Focus on the Positive: Help them see the positives in their situation. Maybe they were cast in a different but equally exciting role, or they have the chance to learn something new.
Set New Goals: Use this as an opportunity to set new goals for the future. Whether it’s working on a specific skill or trying out for a different type of role next time, having something to strive for can be motivating.
Celebrate the Success of Others: Encourage them to be happy for their friends who may have gotten the roles they wanted. This fosters a sense of community and teaches them the importance of supporting others.
Preparing for the Next Audition
Auditions are a learning experience. Encourage your child to reflect on what went well and what they can improve on for next time. Perhaps they need to work on projection, stage presence, or memorization. Remind them that every audition is a step toward becoming a more confident and skilled performer.
Building Resilience
Theatre is a great way to build resilience in children. It teaches them that it’s okay to take risks, that failure is a part of growth, and that persistence pays off. Remind your child that everyone in theatre has faced disappointment at some point, but those experiences make the moments of success even sweeter.
Conclusion
As parents, your support and encouragement are key to helping your child navigate the ups and downs of the audition process. By teaching them to embrace every role, learn from their experiences, and support their peers, you’re helping them develop not just as performers, but as well-rounded individuals who can handle challenges with grace and resilience.
Remember, the most important thing is that they continue to enjoy the process of creating and performing. With your guidance, they can learn to appreciate the journey, regardless of the outcome.

Why Your Child Should Join OPPA!'s Children's Theatre Program This School Year
As parents, we all want the best for our children. We seek activities that not only entertain them but also help them grow and develop essential life skills. One such activity that offers a myriad of benefits is children's theatre. At OPPA!, our children's theatre program is designed to nurture young talent, build confidence, and foster creativity in a fun and supportive environment. Here's why your child should get involved in our program this school year:
Benefits of Theatre for Kids
1. Boosts Confidence: Theatre helps children build self-confidence by providing them with opportunities to perform in front of an audience. Whether they're playing a lead role or part of the ensemble, every child learns to overcome stage fright and gain the confidence to express themselves.
Example: A shy child who initially hesitates to speak up in class may, after participating in a theatre program, find the courage to present a school project with enthusiasm and confidence.
2. Enhances Communication Skills: Participating in theatre helps children develop strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills. They learn to articulate their thoughts clearly, use body language effectively, and listen actively.
Example: Through role-playing and dialogue delivery, children learn the importance of eye contact, voice modulation, and clear diction, which are essential skills for effective communication.
3. Encourages Teamwork: Theatre is a collaborative art form. Children learn the importance of working together towards a common goal. They understand the value of each team member's contribution and develop a sense of camaraderie.
Example: In a production, every role, from the lead to the backstage crew, is crucial. Children learn to appreciate and respect the efforts of their peers, fostering a sense of teamwork and mutual respect.
4. Sparks Creativity: Theatre encourages children to think creatively and explore their imagination. They learn to approach problems from different angles and come up with innovative solutions.
Example: Creating props, improvising scenes, and developing characters all require creative thinking. This creative process helps children to think outside the box and enhances their problem-solving skills.
5. Provides Emotional Outlet: Theatre allows children to express a wide range of emotions in a safe and controlled environment. This can be particularly beneficial for children who struggle to express their feelings.
Example: A child who is experiencing stress or anxiety can find solace in portraying a character's emotions, helping them to process their own feelings in a healthy way.
OPPA!'s Age-Level Classes
At OPPA!, we offer theatre classes tailored to different age groups, ensuring that each child receives age-appropriate training and guidance:
1st - 3rd Grade:
Finding Nemo Kids
Aristocats Kids
These classes introduce young children to the basics of theatre through fun and engaging productions. They learn fundamental skills like memorization, basic stage directions, and simple choreography.
4th - 7th Grade:
Drowsy Chaperone Jr
The Little Mermaid Jr
As children grow, they are introduced to more complex characters and storylines. These productions help them refine their acting skills, improve their vocal abilities, and learn more advanced dance routines.
8th - 12th Grade:
Anastasia
Monty Python's Spamalot Young@Part
Older students tackle challenging roles and sophisticated productions. They delve deeper into character development, stage presence, and advanced performance techniques, preparing them for future opportunities in theatre and beyond.
Introducing the Triple Threat Add-On Option
For those looking to take their theatre experience to the next level, we are excited to offer our new Triple Threat Add-On Option. This includes:
