旅先にて、ロンドンにある美術館「テート・ブリテン」のナイトイベント「Late at Tate Britain」へ行って来たことを以前記しましたが、せっかくなのでもっと詳しく書いていてみたいと思います。

テート・ブリテンのプレゼンテーションやワークショップに参加してきました。

The School of Life イベントの一つに、YouTubeで人気のチャンネル「スクール・オブ・ライフ」によるライブのプレゼンテーションがありました。テーマは「カルチャーが私たちの生活をいかに変えるか」。通常日本だと最後に質疑応答からの流れで軽くディスカッションみたいなことはありますが、プレゼンの途中、急に隣近所とディスカッションしてくださいという時間が強制的に与えられびっくり。まさにアクティブラーニング。ちなみに私のディスカッション相手は、同世代ぐらいの建築事務所で働いているという男性。すごくオシャレで洗練されていて、あぁこういう人がこういうのに参加するんだなぁと、面白かった。

ポスターワークショップ by JASMINE SHERA and HANNA HILL ロンドンをベースに活動するアーティストによるワークショップ。アイデンティティやエンパワーメント、自己愛、前向きな気持ちになることなどに情熱を注ぐ人たち。ワークショップは、コラージュのテクニックを使ってポスターを作るというものでした。 このワークショップはアートやメンタルヘルスについて探っていくもの。私って自分のことをどう思っているの？自分のこと、好き？ 手を動かしながら、そういうことをたくさん考える時間でした。

ウォーリーハット バーでワインを買おうと列に並んでいる時、若い女性たちが素敵でクレイジーな紙の帽子を被っているのを発見。気になって話しかけると「ウォーリーハット」だと教えてくれました。「ウォーリーハット」を作るアートセラピーワークショップは、心理療法士のShan RixonとJenifer Raingoldによるもの。紙の帽子を作ることによって私たちの頭や心の中を深く掘り下げることを目的としていました。ウォーリーハットの制作は浄化作用、癒しの作用もあるようで、私の心配事が消え去ったことは言うまでもありません（笑）しかもこの帽子を持って歩いていたら、私が女性たちに話しかけたように、やっぱり色んな人達に話しかけられ、コミュニケーションツールにもなるなぁとひとり感心したのでした。

それにしても、全てのイベントが「Well-being」の考えをベースにしているなぁという印象。アートやクリエイティブな手法を、社会が抱える問題解決のために使っていこうというのがビシバシ感じ取れました。 ふと、2018年、イギリスでは社会で孤立したり孤独を感じている人たちが多くそこにかかる費用も膨れ上がっていることから「孤独大臣」のポストを置いたりキャンペーンを実施しているというニュースを思い出しました。

イベントには、若者から年配の人たちまで多くの人たちがいて、私はひとりで行ったのにも関わらず、さらにいうとマイノリティなのにも関わらず…日本で暮らしているとき以上に、初めて会う人たちとの会話を楽しむことができたっていうのは、なんだか皮肉ですね。

世界でどのようなアートエデュケーションやラーニングプログラムが行われているのか、そこへの興味は尽きません。

日本だとどうしても、胡散臭かったり、真面目になりすぎたり、野暮ったくてオシャレさがなかったりしがちな題材に、堂々と真正面から超素敵な感じでアプローチしてるのがいいなぁと思った次第。

デザインの力、見せ方の力、編集力、企画力、誰を起用するかなど。どんなに素晴らしいプロジェクトでも、素敵に見えなかったら人は来ないし届かないし。大いなる嫉妬を抱いたのとともに（笑）自分がやりたいことを再確認した夜だったのでした。超寒かったけど、行ってよかった！

I joined a presentation and some workshops at the Tate Britain last Jan.

The School of Life This is a popular YouTube channel and they gave a live presentation at the event. They gave a presentation called “How Culture can Change your Life’’. And we had to discuss the topic with other participants. It was really exciting.

POSTER WORKSHOP by JASMIN SEHRA and HANNAH HILL This is a poster making workshop using a collage technique by a London-based artist passionate about identity, empowerment, self-love and positivity. The collage workshop explored art and mental health. What do I think about me. Do I like myself? I thought a lot of things while making the poster.

worry hat I found some young women wearing lovely and crazy hats made with paper when I was queuing for wine. They told me that it was a ‘worry hat’. The workshop was hosted by art psychotherapists Shan Rixon and Jennifer Raingold. The therapeutic arts workshop was to explore what was in our heads by creating a ‘worry hat’. My worries were gone! Making the hat was cathartic!

I was really impressed because all of the events were based on promoting well-being. All events looked as though they were trying to use art and creative methods to solve problems in our society.

It reminded me of some news that the government of the U.K. set up Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness in January 2018. I saw many people from young to elderly there. I went to the event by myself, but I didn’t feel loneliness at all. I really enjoyed chatting with a lot of new people there. Ironically I talked with more people than I usually do in my daily life in Japan.

I’m really interested in what’ on around art education and learning programs in the world.

パリとロンドンのミュージアム

Museums in Paris and London

冬、休暇をとってパリとロンドンへ行ってきました。もちろん、目的はミュージアムとギャラリー巡り。ふだん美術館で働いているので、フランスとイギリスのミュージアムでどんなことが起きているのか実際に見てみたいと思ってのこと。10個以上のミュージアムを訪ねてきました。

パリでは、ピカソ美術館、ポンピドゥーセンター、カルティエ現代美術財団、パリ工芸博物館。全ての美術館で、多くの子どもたちを見かけました。5歳ぐらいの子どもから大学生まで。ファシリテーターのリードのもと、作品を前に、床に座って考えや気づきをシェアしていました。

このような絵の鑑賞方法は日本でもここ10～20年ほどで随分ポピュラーになってきているのですが、驚いたのは、私が行く先々のミュージアムで、早朝だろうが夜だろうが、若い人たちと100%遭遇したこと。

みんなで絵を見るという行為が、社会の中にすっかり根付いていて、ファシリテーターも子や学生たちも慣れている感じ！ ピカソ美術館のスタッフに、私が見かけたファシリテーターについて尋ねたところ、そういう鑑賞方法のトレーニングを受けたプロフェッショナルであり、パリの他のミュージアムでも同様にミュージアムツアーを行なっているとのこと。似たようなシステムを、以前オランダでも聞いたことがあったのを思い出しました。 ロンドンでは、テート・ブリテン、テート・モダン、ホワイト・チャペル・ギャラリー、バービカンセンター、ダリッチ・ピクチャーギャラリー（最近、高齢者や認知症患者へ向けたラーニングプログラムで超有名）へ。 もちろん、そこでも多くの子どもや学生を見かけたわけですが、中でもいちばん印象に残ったのが、ナイトミュージアム Late at Tate Britain（レイト・アット・テート・ブリテン）。 ナイトミュージアムや夜のイベントはここ最近ヨーロッパで非常にポピュラーで、私も2012年にロンドンに住んでいた頃、V&AやFirst Thursdaysの夜のイベントに頻繁に遊びに行っていました。

テート・ブリテンのイベントは18:30～21:30まで、毎月最終金曜日に開かれ、スポンサーはユニクロ！ でも、Late at Tate Britain が興味深いのは、そのテーマが非常に魅力的だから。 私が参加した回は、「Don’t Worry（心配しないで）」でした。

過去のテーマを辿ると、こんなものが。 （カッコは私の意訳です。ネイティブからするとちょっと違うかも…） Truth（真実）、We Are The Future（私たちは未来そのも）、Che Fare?（なにをなすべきか　by レーニン）、Kabocha（カボチャ ←え、カボチャw？）、Spire（尖塔）、ECHOES（共鳴）、Flux（ものの流れ）などなど。 これらのテーマは、若いゲストアーティストやコレクション作品に基づくものなのだそう。こんなの日本で聞いたことがあります!? つづく

I went to Paris and London to visit some museums and galleries on holidays last month. I usually work for an art museum, so I would like to see with my own eyes recent developments in France and the U.K. I visited more than 10 museums and galleries in total. In Paris, I visited Musée Picasso, Centre Georges Pompidou, Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain and Musée des Arts et Métiers.

I saw many children who looked between 5 years old and university students at all of the museums. They sat down in front of a painting and exchanged their opinions leaded by the facilitator. This sharing the way of seeing artwork has been gaining in popularity even in Japan over the last 10 to 20 years, but I was really surprised because I didn’t expect to come across so many young people at every museums from early morning to evening. I asked a staff member of Musée Picasso about a facilitator who I saw. She is trained and a professional, and gives a museum tour for kids, not only for Musee Picasso but also some museums in Paris. I also heard about a similar system in the Netherlands before. In London, I visited The British Museum, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, White Chapel Gallery, Barbican Centre, Dulwich Picture Gallery (Their learning program for elderly people and dementia elderly is really famous even in Japan!) and so on.

Of course I also saw many school kids and students there, too. But I was really impressed by the event Late at Tate Britain. Night museum and Late events have been really popular in Europe recently. I often joined Friday Late at V&A and First Thursdays when I lived in London in 2012.

The event Late at Tate Britain is held from 18.00 to 21.30. every last Friday sponsored by UNIQLO at Tate Britain. But the event is interesting, because the theme was really engaging. The one I joined was Don’t Worry.  The past theme were: Truth, We Are The Future, Che Fare?, Kabocha, Spire, ECHOES, Flux and so on.It is based on the guest young artists and their collections. Have you ever heard such a thing in Japan!? To be continued.

Art Village Shirakino

2018年12月 先日、アートビレッジ・シラキノを訪ねてきました。アートビレッジ・シラキノは長崎・南島原市が運営するアーティスト・イン・レジデンス（AIR）。白木野小学校の旧校舎を利用し、主に版画を専門とするアーティストたちが、滞在しながら制作するためのスタジオ（銅版画、木版画、リトグラフ、シルクスクリーンプリントの設備）、ギャラリー、宿泊施設などがあります。常駐のエデュケーター・池田さんはご自身も銅版画のアーティスト。池田さんをはじめ、滞在するアーティストたちによるワークショップもすでに何度か開催されているとのことでした。場所は、世界遺産「長崎と天草地方の潜伏キリシタン関連遺産」の「原城跡」と、有名な彫刻家・北村西望記念館のすぐ近くにあり、２Fにある各スタジオからは、美しい海と雲仙普賢岳が臨めました。これから、どのように展開していくのか楽しみです。 I visited Art Village Shirakino（AIR） the other day.The old Shirakino elementary school was converted into an artists’ residence and it’s run by Minami-shimabara city, Nagasaki.There are some kind of printing studios for intaglio printing, woodblock printing, lithography, silkscreen printing and so on. There is also a gallery and accommodation.Ikeda-san is an art educator for the art village. He is an intaglio printing artist and organizes some workshops with resident artists.I heard that they have already given some workshops for people in Minami-shimabara city.The art village is located near the world heritage ‘Hara Castle’ which is a part of ‘ The Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region’. In addition, ‘The Seibou Park’, by a famous sculptor Seibo Kitamura, his most famous work is Peace statue in Nagasaki peace park.A beautiful view of the ocean and Mt. Fugendake can be seen from the windows of the studios.I am looking forward to seeing how they develop!

Let’s make frames together! /フレームを作りましょう！

I made some frames by myself.  Actually they were made of paper napkins and cardboard. Do you believe that?

It was easy to make it. When you prepare the paper napkins, please tear, roll and fold them as you like. Please stick them on the cardboard using glue.  Try spraying gold lacquer on it! Try making a frame when you have a time.

いくつかのフレームを手作りしました。実は、これ、ペーパーナプキンとダンボールでできてるんです。信じられますか？作り方は簡単！ペーパーナプキンを好きなように破って、ロールして、折って… 糊でダンボールに貼って、そして金色のスプレーをかけて。 時間のあるときに、作ってみてくださいね。

Collage Workshop/コラージュワークショップ

Making something makes me feel really happy every time. In December, I organized a collage workshop for kids. Only white materials such as feathers, cotton, rubber gloves, fabric, toilet paper, rice and so on were allowed to be used. They were all collected in my daily life. But if one changed their view point, they all look really nice and like kawaii materials for a collage! I like collages very much. I was thinking about why I like them. There’s no specific way to do it, so we don’t need to find a 'correct' composition. We can make as we like! That’s why I like it.

何かをつくっているとき、私はいつも本当にハッピーです。先日、子どもたち向けのワークショップを企画しました。使えるのは白い素材だけ。例えば、羽、綿、ゴム手袋、布、トイレットペーパー、お米など。 それらはすべて、ふだんの暮らしの中から集めたもの。でも、視点を変えると、それらはすべてコラージュのための、素敵でかわいいと思えるような素材なのです。 コラージュがとても好きです。なぜなのか考えていました。そこには、具体的な方法がないから、正しいコンポジションを探す必要がないから（自分なりの好きな構図を考えて良い、多様性を受け入れてくれる）…だから好きなんだと思います。

Enjoy Printing!

During my holiday, I visited London. I thought it would be nice if I could make some artwork during my stay in London, So joined a silkscreen printing workshop. The studio is ‘PRINT CLUB LONDON’ located in Dalston, East London.  The printing workshop was held from 11am to 4pm. I experienced the general skills of silkscreen printing through the workshop. It was a lovely experience for me! The next day, I came across a nice exhibition at V&A museum of childhood. The museum collaborated with the RISO printing maker ‘Hato Press’. Hato Press made some newspapers with kids. They all looked really excited!!!  Hato Press had an exhibition in Tokyo before. Hato means Pigeon in Japanese and the Logo’s pigeon was drawn by Japanese illustrator Chie Chihiro.

By the way, sometimes my foreign friends ask me about interesting printing studios in Japan. Well I think… I like Retoro insatsu (Printing) JAM!  JAM is also an RISO and silkscreen printing studio. JAM has been famous for one way to make ZINE and little press art books for a few years. Their work is all kawaii! 2016年秋、ホリデーでロンドンに滞在しているとき、大好きなシルクスクリーン印刷のワークショップにトライしてきました。旅先で、何か作れたら素敵だなぁと思って。 イーストロンドン・ダルストンにある「プリントクラブロンドン」のワークショップ。朝１１時～午後４時迄の内容、一通りの経験ができます。 翌日、V&Aこどもミュージアムを訪れたときに、ハトプレスがこどもたちと作った新聞が展示してあるところに出くわしました。ハトプレス、以前東京でもフェアをしていましたし、ハトプレスのハトは、日本語の鳩が由来のようです。ロゴのイラストも日本人イラストレーター・ちえちひろさんです。 ところで時折、外国の友人に日本の面白い印刷スタジオを訪ねられます。そうですね…私はレトロ印刷JAMが好きです。JAMもまたRISO印刷やシルクスクリーン印刷をするスタジオです。JAMはここ数年ZINEやリトルプレスの本をつくるうえで知られています。彼らの作品はどれもかわいいです。

Attractive patterns in London

In September, 2016 I visited London for the first time in a while. Over the 6 days, I saw some creators and visited many many galleries!  I found kawaii shapes, materials and patterns there. Of course there were Japanese things as well!

Attractive Materials

I’ve been thinking about the materials used in art for these days. Because I found these words when I visited the Tate Modern in London before. WHAT COMES FIRST , THE MATERIALS OR THE IDEA? HOW DO MATERIALS AFFECT MEANINGS?

I have the chance to use many kinds of materials because of my job - an art educator. What kind of materials do you like? Have you thought about it before? These things don’t have any meaning but they’re very attractive to me. Some of them are usually scheduled for the dustbin, I think. I’m not the only one who think they can be used somehow, right? 魅力的な素材 ここ最近、ずっとアートの素材について考えています。この前ロンドンのテートモダンでこの言葉を見たからです。 素材とアイディア、どちらが先？ 素材はどのような意味を与えるのか。 皆さんは、どんな種類の素材が好きですか？ そういうことをこれまでに考えたことがありますか？ これらのものは、大した意味を持たないものですが、私にとっては魅力的なものです。 ふつうゴミ箱行きのものもあるでしょう。 でも、何かに使えそうって思うのは、私だけではないですよね？

Shells and pebbles on my desk at the office

One day, I collected some shells and pebbles by the sea in front of my parent’s house.  

Some of them are on my desk at the office now. They remind me of a poem.

“In the deep blue sky, Like the pebbles at the bottom of the sea, The daytime stars, sinking until night comes,

Are invisible to our eyes, But though we can’t see them, they are there Things invisible are still there. ”

I read the poem ‘Stars and a Dandelion’ when I was a junior high school student. It was written by a female Japanese poet Misuzu Kaneko. She passed away over half a century ago at the tender age of 26, but her poems are still impressive to us. The beautiful shells and pebbles on my desk take me to a world of fancy. オフィスの机にある、貝殻と小石

ある日、実家の前の海で、貝殻と小石を集めました。そのうちのいくつかが、今、オフィスの机の上にあります。 それは、ある詩を思い起こさせます。 青いお空の底ふかく、 海の小石のそのように、 夜がくるまで沈んでる、 昼のお星は目にみえぬ。 見えぬけれどもあるんだよ、 見えるものでもあるんだよ。 この詩「星とたんぽぽ」を読んだのは私が中学生のときのこと。日本の女性詩人、金子みすゞさんによるものです。 彼女は今から半世紀以上前に、26歳の若さでこの世を去りました。しかし、今も尚、私たちに感動を与えてくれます。 私の机に乗っている美しい貝殻と小石は、空想の世界へと私を連れていってくれます。 詩『睫毛の虹』より。よしだみどり　訳

Snowflakes I started making these snowflakes to enjoy the cold winter at home. I made them by cutting out shapes from paper. We usually call this kind of paper craft ‘ Monkiri ’. I heard that the first person who made an illustrated manual of snowflakes called ‘sekka zusetsu’ in the edo period, about 200 years ago was Toshitsura Doi.  His teacher was a scholar of Holland, Senseki Takami. They looked at snowflakes with a microscope and made the manual together. People from that time started to fall in love with snowflakes right away. So ‘Monkiri’ of snowflakes was born. They were easy to make. Give it a go!

雪の結晶 私は、冬に家で過ごすのを楽しむべく、雪の結晶を作り始めました。紙を切って作っていて、私たちはこういったペーパークラフトを「紋切り」と呼んでいます。 およそ２００年前、江戸時代に初めて雪の結晶の図鑑『雪花図説』を作ったのは土井利位だそうです。彼の先生は蘭学者、鷹見泉石。彼らは雪の結晶を顕微鏡で見て、その図鑑を一緒に作り上げました。 当時の人々は、たちまちその雪の結晶を好きになりました。そして、雪の結晶の「紋切り」が生まれたのです。 簡単に作る事ができるので、ぜひやってみてくださいね！

Leaves

I’ve been busy these days, but the kawaii things which I’ll show you now made me feel relax.  My friend gave me the horse made by glass!  I decorate the wall with the horse. This is my collection of leaves. I collected them on a trip. One of them was from Fukuoka, Japan and the others from Seoul, Paris, Berlin and so on… I put these leaves between the pages of my thick notebook when I found them. So these leaves remind me of many happy times. I can escape from the busy days in my mind! I hope to go hiking to collect new leaves in the near future! I also need fresh air!

A hand made brooch

I’ve been interested in knots for a few years. For example, when I visited a marine museum, I noticed that I took many photos of sailor’s knots!  I yearned to make beautiful knots someday. One day, I found out that a close friend of mine was really good at knotting. He also had a lot of books about knots. So I asked him to show me how to make a knot. His hands looked like a magician’s! What a beautiful knot! I was really excited! Finally I attached the brooch pin behind it…… Wow! Kawaii!!

Letter press printing and braille’s envelope

I’ll show you my special postcard and envelope! I organized an event ‘Letter press printing workshop for sighted and the visually challenged’ at the art museum in September. We mede writing paper and postcards by letter press printing.  I drew these illustrations. Spectacle bridge and Urakami church in Nagasaki are both famous places. This envelope was made by a braille newspaper for the visually challenged. Many participants were interested in braille thanks to the envelope. Who am I going to write to using them.

2015年8月、久留米の石橋美術館の展覧会関連企画としてワークショップ「額縁職人になろう」を、デザイナーの中川たくまさんと一緒に企画しました August 2015 / I organized the frame making workshop with the designer Takuma Nakagawa at Ishibasi Museum of Art in Kurume Fukuoka.
