benson and randy have had a couple close calls since leaving town. people stare at them for too long or whisper to one another when they walk past. it freaks both of them out, especially benson.

they’ve started changing how they look a lot more. benson has shaved his head and face. randy’s hair has grown out a bit, almost enough to put it in a small ponytail.

benson has the idea first. he sees a dress in a small shop the two of them were shoplifting from and immediately stares at randy. randy can read his mind. he hates the idea at first, but after a while, he agrees that it’s necessary.

they sneak it out of the store without setting off any alarms and change in the back seat of the car. the moment randy steps out of the car, benson freaks out.

randy looks pretty.

sure, randy always looks pretty. he has that deer in headlights look that benson has always admired in a way, but he’s never looked like this. his cheeks are flushed from the heat, and his pale collarbones peek out of the neck of the dress. the sleeves are short, exposing randy’s freckled upper arms. the dress reaches right above his knees.

randy feels awkward, wondering why benson is staring at him. he wonders if he looks odd, like a child wearing their mother’s clothes. he finally asks benson what’s wrong.

benson grunts and tells randy that it’s nothing. he hops in the driver’s seat and starts the car, gesturing to randy to get in.

they drive for a while. benson’s eyes shift over to randy’s thighs where the dress has ridden up. he tries to look away—he really does—but it’s almost impossible. the younger man is the most attractive person benson has ever seen.

when they stop at a motel for the night, randy changes out of the dress and into a pair of pjs aka some of benson’s old baggy clothes. benson is sad, and he hates himself for it. he’s tried to ignore his feelings since the moment he saw randy; he won’t let some dumb dress ruin his relationship with the boy.

cal and andre meeting during silent lunch.

the two boys had been acting up in their classes, disrupting teachers and causing all types of problems with other students. cal wouldn’t shut up while andre wouldn’t do what was asked of him.

their teachers finally had enough of the boys’ attitudes. they had already reached out to their parents, which didn’t help, so they needed to do something else. they knew that they couldn’t really put them in time out—that wasn’t appropriate for middle school kids. one thing they could do was put them in silent lunch.

the boys were sat away from all other students during their grade’s lunch break. they got their food and sat across from one another. a teacher positioned herself at the end of the table, letting the boys have their own room but making sure they stayed quiet.

andre stared at his plate the entire time. cal stared at andre. both of them were terribly awkward and didn’t know how to communicate. cal tried to talk multiple times, asking who andre was and why they had to be quiet, but he was shut down every time.

after lunch, cal followed andre into the hallway and introduced himself. he didn’t know who andre was or why he was in silent lunch, but he somehow knew they were both trouble incarnate. he knew andre was just like him, maybe less hyperactive but that didn’t matter.

andre hated cal at first, but the blond boy grew on him. they both kept getting in trouble, kept having to sit next to one another, and kept meeting up in the hallway.

after a while, cal started showing up by andre’s locker after school. andre had no idea how cal found out where his locker was, but he didn’t mind. they became close friends quickly. on the outside, they were polar opposites, but everyone soon realized they were eerily similar.

cal’s the type to have saved his ritalin to sell to others or even to keep for himself. his parents would think he was taking the medication, but he really wasn’t. they’d find a baggie of the pills one day and start making sure the bottle is hidden and that cal takes the pills in front of them every morning. when he gets taken off the medication, they’re all relieved.

the boys getting their wisdom teeth taken out.

andre is terrified before he goes under. he's worried he'll blab about something he shouldn't like zero day or his feelings about the people around him. he refuses to have cal around because he knows that cal will film every minute of it. when he gets in the car after his surgery, he thinks he's lost his tongue and starts crying. he tries to pull the gauze from his mouth, but his parents stop him. he sits in the back seat with his mom and talks nonstop. when he gets home, he complains about being hungry and gets angry at his parents for not feeding him. once he finally falls asleep, his parents are just glad he's done complaining.

cal is kind of excited about the surgery. he's used to having problems with his teeth between braces and cavities, so there's no anxiety there. he doesn't worry about saying anything as he knows his family will just laugh it off. after the procedure, he doesn't speak. he stares at people with the widest eyes any of the nurses have ever seen and grabs at his lips over and over again. he looks out the window on the way home, amazed by everything they pass by. once he gets home, his siblings mess with him nonstop. he ends up just falling asleep, but his brother and sister still find his swollen face hilarious.

i haven't gone anywhere! i haven't posted in a couple days because i've recently gotten back into a heavy fixation i've had since i was around 11 or 12. it has taken over my mind completely so thinking up some stuff about zero day has taken me a little while. i love you too anon!

thinking about how andre rarely received outward expressions of love.

his parents, at least his dad, almost never said he loved him or that he was proud of him. his father finally said he was proud of andre only days before the boy died.

sure, his mother loved him. she gave him hugs and kisses, but she never outwardly said she cared for him. she hoped her actions showed her feelings enough. she regrets her decisions every day after his death.

he kept a note that a girl wrote him in middle school, knowing that he would most likely never get a gift like that again. no one would ever compliment him like that so blatantly. even cal danced carefully around true praise.

all andre wanted was someone to love him, someone to stop his spiral into loneliness. he loved so hard but seldom received anything in return.

his casket is closed for the public. before the funeral, his parents had time with the casket open; they wanted a little more time with their son before he went in the ground. they hadn’t allowed cal’s siblings to look at his body until then, but they finally explained the situation fully to the kids and wanted them to see him.

his brother still doesn’t understand death fully, and his sister understands it a little too well. they both talk to cal’s body, knowing he won’t respond. his sister lays her favorite stuffed animal in the casket, right next to cal’s head. his brother tells him how much he misses him and updates him on life.

the gabriel family is full for the last time. once their oldest boy is buried six feet under and five is turned into four, nothing will be whole again.
