don’t cry - scaramouche x child!reader (platonic)

warnings: angst, mentions of death

you were huddled inside the ruins of a house long neglected, knees hugged close to your chest. outside, the seemingly endless storms of yashiori island raged on, every clap of thunder causing you to flinch and shut your eyes tight. your face was still damp, from tears or rainwater you weren’t entirely sure.

your family had evacuated last week, as many families were forced to, in an attempt to escape the effects of the tatarigami. however, because of the large amount of siblings you had, they hadn’t even noticed that they had left one child behind.

you began to sob again as you started to think about it, wishing you could crawl inside your mother’s arms again, that you could feel the warmth of your family instead of the rain-soaked chill that didn’t seem to go away. you didn’t understand how they’d forgotten you. didn’t they love you? maybe they did it on purpose so they would have one less mouth to feed. you felt another sob rising in your throat when a sudden voice froze you in place.

“my, my, what do we have here?”

you shakily looked up to see a short man standing in the tattered doorway, an ominously large hat sitting atop his head.

“w-who are you?” you managed to ask, hugging your knees a little tighter. the man crouched down so that he was at your level and smiled.

“i am scaramouche, the sixth of the eleven fatui harbingers.” you gave him a confused look, and he let out a little laugh. “you can just call me scara.”

you simply nodded in response. scara… what a strange name. he was dressed strangely, too- like some sort of prince from an inazuman fairy tale. you eyed him skeptically, not quite sure if you could trust him or not.

“what are you doing out here all alone?” he asked.

you bit your lip. “my… my family… t-they left me,” you began, but you couldn’t get anything else out before the tears returned to your eyes. in the darkness you could see scara’s expression go soft, his violet eyes changing from cold to something else, something gentle.

“you’ve been abandoned, hm?” the man let out a sigh. “it’s a terrible feeling,” he said bitterly, and you cocked your head out of curiosity. it sounded like he was speaking from experience.

scaramouche rose to his feet and extended his hand. “come. crying won’t make your family come back.”

you looked up at him and blinked, confused. “b-but… where am i supposed to go..?” you asked. the man rolled his eyes.

“just shut up and take my hand already.”

you hesitated. you didn’t know this man, and he was quite rude… but it wasn’t like you had anywhere else to go. biting your lip, you put your tiny hand in his, and he pulled you gently to your feet. you shuffled closer to him as the two of you stepped back out into the rain, letting his large hat serve as an umbrella. scaramouche scoffed, but said nothing, and the two of you walked away from the village you had always called home.

a/n: wow, i am SO SORRY this request took so long,, i’ve been in a major slump but i’ve been working on this little by little…. tysm for being patient everyone! let’s hope that i’ll be able to write a lot more this month.

i did get incredibly lucky though, because i got him, jean and his con within 40 pulls of each other and i was so happy

little life update, i guess — my pet bird, who i love with all my heart, hurt his leg last night somehow. i think maybe he got it stuck on something :( anyways, he has an appointment at the vet tomorrow morning, and they said they think they can help him, but i’ve been worried sick all day. he can barely walk/climb, and he’s acting the same as he did when he got sick last summer </3 i really hope he’ll be okay.
