John 5 (Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Solo Artist)

John 5 is best known for his guitar work with Marilyn Manson (and later with Rob Zombie) but is a relatively popular guitarist in his own right. Finding images of him sans the guitar will be a challenge but this could also be used to your advantage if you’re looking to play a musician character.

Perfect for: that one guy who sold his soul to the Devil to play perfect guitar but turned into some kind of guitar monster, a demon, a trickster, a serial killer

Dani Filth (Cradle of Filth)

Dani Filth is a horror writer’s dream. He often appears on stage in corpse-paint or dark makeup. His style is most definitely on the spiky-goth side. He’s a small guy with a big voice and even bigger boots. His band are known for their horror music videos and blasphemous lyrics.

Perfect for: a demon, a trickster, a dark God, the devil, an evil leprechaun, something a teenager accidentally summoned from an old book they found in the woods.

Mortiis (Musician)

Mortiis is a troll who lives in a cave in Norway. Mortiis is also a metal and electronic/industrial musician who, I presume, lives in a cave in Norway.

Mortiis used to appear onstage with prosthetic nose and ears. Lately he has ditched the prosthetics in favour of corpse paint and fake blood.

Mortiis is a serious musician you guys.

Finding graphics that aren’t tiny and pixelated may be slightly difficult but they’re out there. Unfortunately Mortiis is one of those black metal musicians who believes that things are only trve and kvlt if they’re low resolution, distorted and/or in black and white. Look at his wee goblin face, though.

Perfect for: a shapeshifter, a goblin, a troll, a demon, a serial killer, serial killer by day and troll by night. Come on guys he’s a goblin what more do you want from me?

Emilie Autumn (solo artist)

Emilie Autumn’s style ranges from burlesque meets Alice in Wonderland to an almost harlequin-like look. Her outfits are usually suited to the Victorian era with a modern twist and it shouldn’t be hard to find images/gifs of her on Tumblr and elsewhere.

She’s also really into that fetishy asylum stuff. You know, straitjackets and whatnot. I can’t in good conscience recommend that sort of RP but hey, whatever floats your boat.

Perfect for: A Victorian ghost, a goddess of madness, a trickster, an alternate Harley-Quinn FC, a circus performer, a burlesque performer.

Nergal (of the band Behemoth)

Nergal is the frontman for the Polish black metal band Behemoth. He often dons corpse paint and robes onstage. When not in “stage” character, Nergal is something of an underground style icon. He has a range of clothing and owns his own chain of barber shops across Poland.

He also fronts the country/blues band Me And That Man.

Perfect for: Let’s be honest, Nergal would make a perfect FC for Satan himself. He’d also work as a cult leader, a demon, a modern wizard or fallen angel.

Anyone using him for an FC will find a lot of graphics on Tumblr but there’s another goldmine of possible screenshots/gifs in Behemoth’s music videos. Whilst the earlier ones are a bit silly, Nergal has taken a more proactive approach in adding his personal style to them lately, making them slick and dark and perfect for a horror muse.

Neige (aka Stephane Paut) of the band Alcest

Neige is an androgynous French musician who fronts the atmospheric shoegaze band Alcest. He has numerous musical side projects. His timeless style means that he could play a character from numerous decades, perhaps even centuries.

Perfect for: Androgynous and ethereal characters. Fairies, spirits, the kind of vampires that never age. You know the ones. A God of the forest. A ghost.

Gary Numan (musician)

Gary Numan is primarily known for his pioneering electronic music and distinctive style in the 80s, however in the last 10 years he has undergone a change in style and direction which could also be very useful for those seeking an FC. With each album, Gary undergoes a slight (or sometimes drastic) change in style. This is useful for those who seek an FC that can shift or be shown in various contexts. Perhaps an immortal?

Perfect for: Well, this depends on the Numan era!

Early Numan is a perfect FC for androids, aliens, virtual reality/digital characters. 

Later Numan is a perfect FC for steampunk-esque characters as well as post-apocalyptic characters. His image is scruffy and dark, lots of smudged eyeliner and torn clothing. He would also make a perfect ghost.

Bonus: Gary recently appeared in a post-apocalyptic themed music video with his eleven-year-old daughter, Persia. This could be useful for anyone writing father & daughter themed apocalyptic fiction or RP.

Papa Emeritus (of the band Ghost B.C.)

As lead singer of the band Ghost, Papa Emeritus is already a character who has gone through several incarnations. The first Papa was an elderly, pope-like character who appeared progressively younger through his ensuing “rebirths.”

Ghost are a band who are all about the theratrics and style, so there are plenty of gifs and graphics of Papa to be found online.

Perfect for: An evil priest, a cult-leader a demon, a nightmarish representation of religion, a ghost, a ghoul. Any character with religious or cultish overtones.

Papa would make a great secondary FC as a characters “demonic” form or perhaps how a character looks when dressed up to perform Satanic rites.

Bonus: The other members of the band Ghost present as “faceless ghouls,” wearing masks not dissimilar to the ones worn by the Death Eaters in Harry Potter.
