Hi! I am currently writing a fantasy book set in a kingdom of my own invention. The kingdom is part of a stand alone universe so Earth doesn’t exist. However, two of my main characters have British accents and I’m having a really hard time figuring out how to convey how they speak considering I can’t say “British.” Could you help me out in any way? Thanks for all you do! I appreciate all the hard work you put into this blog! :)
There are several British accents:
So, you have to start by figuring out which your character’s accents sound like. You can go to YouTube and type in the different ones to hear them. Listen to the videos and note how they sound to you. What makes them stand out from the others? You can also look them up on Google to find descriptions of how they sound. But note: there is absolutely no way to describe an accent (without directly stating where it’s from) that will give your readers an accurate image of what you’re describing. It’s impossible, because every person isn’t familiar with every accent. That said, choose a few descriptors about the accent that stand out to you, then pair that with wherever they’re from in your fantasy realm. For example, “The young woman spoke in the melodic, non-rhotic accent of someone from the Kirandia highlands.” And leave it up to your reader’s imagination.

Hello everyone!
As you all know, there’s a new Tumblr update that makes it infinitely more difficult to reblog things that are cut and posted neatly. If you’ve already found a way that works for you, then you don’t have to look at any of this below. If you’re looking for an easier way, or you aren’t sure how to do anything, then below the cut I’ll post several ways that you can go about roleplaying as usual!
Probably the easiest way to handle the fix is if you’re using New XKit. While this makes me slightly leery, because of how XKit guy was bullied and left Tumblr, and this is a fork off of the original code that he created (which is explained on their site to be legal, but I don’t know much about any of that to say for sure), it definitely works and has the same functionality as XKit. It looks exactly the same, and is being updated, since these people haven’t been forced off Tumblr.
You can download New XKit for Chrome here, or for Firefox here.
Once you have it installed, you’ll have to go through and download all of the extensions you use if you’re still using original XKit.
Also, there’s an extension called “Editable Reblog” that allows you to edit things--even in drafts. There is sometimes a second lag after opening the reply, but it’s the easiest and cleanest and most original fix for the problem.
Another great way to handle the situation is to install a script that brings old reblog back (as much as it can). This lovely person has written up a script, and there are pictures for how it looks when the script is installed. It sill shows the “Put Reblogs Back” Button, which you don’t have to click because the posts are all down in the text now. There will also be a spot that says “my reply goes here” to direct you to the right spot to put your reblog. Other than those two changes, everything is still the same--you delete their text, and add your own.
In order to install the script, here are links to the script and script hosters for both Firefox inspired and Chrome inspired browsers. I know that this won’t fix it for every browser, but this will get a good majority of things working again.
For those of you who use Chrome inspired browsers, here’s a post with pictures to show you how to install the script hoster and the script itself. I imagine that firefox works the same way: you install the host, then go to the script page here, and install the script.
Note that if you draft your reply, you cannot go back and edit anything but your own reply from that point. If you are drafting things and you delete previous posts that you don’t need before you draft it, then you can go back into the drafts and edit your reply only--when you open up a draft, it doesn’t change the post back to the original way, it leaves it with the newt box-style reblog. This is fine if all you have to do is edit your own reply, because you don’t need to touch your partner’s reply after you’ve got the thing cut. So
reblog, cut, then draft
, and you can go back to edit your reply later.
If you can’t use that change to get things back to normal, another option that you have is going through HTML. There is only one thing that you have to do in HTML--adding blockquotes. All else can be done in normal plain editing. This video shows it well, but here are a few tips as well:
Instead of copying the gif, you copy the gif URL. Simply copying the image doesn’t work. But if you copy the URL, and paste it into the post, the gif shows up.
The video shows using gif copying methods for replies as well. If you upload your gifs, it works the same way, you just upload the gif normally instead of copying it like she does.
These are the two methods that I see working right now. Like I said, installing the script is much simpler and after about a minute or two of work, everything is pretty close to normal. Honestly, I don’t see this update lasting for too long, but if it does, there will undoubtedly be new ways that pop up that I will share with all of you.
If you have questions, or need detailed pictures, or just want a rundown, don’t hesitate to ask! I can even call people on skype and share my screen and show them how it works.
Don’t freak out. It’s just another thing to adjust to. We’ll get through it~

Though she was less than satisfied with the response she had gotten from Capscien, Briana knew well enough to keep listening to the answers her classmates were getting in response to their questions. She’d had her own question on her mind since the last school year, and finally she felt like she knew the way she wanted to phrase it. As soon as a there was a lull in the questions she stood, not waiting to be called on- just incase Capscien was fed up enough with her to ignore a raised hand. And anyway, raising her hand wasn’t really her style.
“If there’s one thing that all of this has shown me, it’s that- regardless of fault- there are a lot of mistakes on both sides, mistakes that have led to grievous injury and death. Moreover, you have also admitted that you don’t know about how the Ministry- which is under Sundim leadership- is going to be handling things. There seems to be a significant disconnect between Sundim’s intentions and their actions.”
She paused, knowing she should get to the actual question before they made her sit down. “So my question is: Are you all under the same leadership? Is there any relationship between the Sundim members working in the school and the Sundim members working in the Ministry? Or is it more like the various sects of a Christian religion? Are you even affiliated beyond belonging to the same group on the grounds of believing in the same ideals?”
“We are being respectful of others right now, Miss Drake. I won’t talk to you if you spout off again like that. I’m more than willing to talk to you, however, if you do so appropriately.” The woman listened to her speech, and then her question, furrowing her brows again. “I fail to see the disconnect. Everything I’ve said has been backed by the actions I’ve made to change the school. Unless you’re still judging things based on the loss, in which case I can say that I’ve stated numerously that those actions were not my intentions in the slightest.”
“Sundim is a belief. A way of living. Is there a source behind the scenes, trying to help press things forward? Yes. A committee, much like your committee of international wizards. Am I in direct contact with Falsdom, or those at the Ministry? No. I’ve never met the man. I do my part, and that’s all I’m a part of. Which is just further reasoning why I think judging all of us because of what a few of us have done is not the best way to look at the situation. I hope that answers your question well enough.”

After hearing what Luka has said about Sundim and Italy it had prompted Emi to stand up and voice something that had been bothering her. “Luka said that Sundim has taken over and made things better in Italy. But every country is reacting differently. I learned from my grandparents that Japan overthrew them, when they tried to persuade my family to leave the country and pull me from school. I don’t need to mention everything that’s happened here, everyone in this room is aware. So my question is this: Why haven’t we heard more about the other countries and why does most of the violence seem to be centered here?”
Capscien gave the girl a smile, and rolled her lips. “No information is being controlled. If you want information about other countries, it’s out there. I know only of a few. Spain, my home country, has Sundim leadership. Italy, like Mr. Caito said. Other countries have gotten rid of Sundim, such as Japan, and France. How they accomplished that, I won’t say here, but you can find reports of it out there. England is not reporting other countries because, as far as I can tell, they don’t want to focus on anything else but what is happening here. As for the violence... Like I’ve stated, it wasn’t supposed to happen. I don’t know why Falsdom decided to kill the Minister. I don’t agree with it. Here, the deaths weren’t supposed to happen. I don’t agree with them, either. You can all say I’m lying, but I’m not. It wasn’t supposed to happen, plain and simple. It just seems like some countries are more willing to fight against Sundim than others, and that’s... really all there is to it.”

When students walked into his classroom, Seamus Thorne had different potions sitting at different desks. Small vials, just enough for one little dose. Each student sat down in front of them, and he grinned as he jumped into class.
“Go ahead. Take your potion. And no, Jacob, I won’t tell you what it is,” he said, pointing to a Slytherin who already had their hand up. “Some of you might have sleep potions, some of you might have potions that will make you break out into boils, and one of you might have a luck potion, right there, in your reach.” He waited for a few moments, and when not a single student drank their potion, he furrowed his brows. “Nobody?” he asked, shaking his head and walking down the aisle. “Nobody has the guts to take their potion and figure out what they’ve got?”
The man shook his head, and gestured for them all to pick up their potion. “Come on. You don’t have to take it,” he said, shaking his head. “I promise that none of it would kill you though. Brewed it all myself. On the other hand... maybe I should have stuck to the more pleasant potions, and then you’d all be taking them right now, wouldn’t you? If there wasn’t a fear that you would start growing hair all over your body, or be polyjuiced into my annoying neighbor’s cat.”
He smiled, continuing his pacing as he went on. “Potions is about a lot more than ingredients, timing, yadda yadda, blah, blah, blah, I had Slughorn too and I can tell you it was boring as hell. Potions shouldn’t be boring. It should be exciting. It should make you want to put time into it, and effort, so that you can create something that can change your life. Unless, of course, you’re content to buy your potions, in which case I will refer you to the pamphlet I am currently passing out, in which one woman drank a simple store bought headache potion and ended up with a horn growing out of her forehead like she’s some kind of freaky unicorn witch.” He made a face, passing out the last of the papers and then gesturing to the class again.
“So, whether or not you take my class--which, in my humble and honest opinion, you should... Just because it’s the responsible thing to do,” he said, making a face like it was obvious, “You’re going to need potions all your life. Now, you can become a unicorn person, or you can take some time to sit down with me and figure out how to do stuff for yourself. I can assure you, we’ll learn all the basics, and get into some more of the advanced stuff that everyone wants to learn, but some professors are too scared to teach you. My philosophy is that I’d rather you be educated than dead, and... that seems pretty reasonable to me.”
Thorne picked a potion off of his own desk. “Keep your potions. Take it, if you want, some other time. Study it and try to figure out what it is. If you do take my class, and you can tell me what your potion is, regardless of how you found out, I’ll give you bonus points. If you don’t take my class, and you end up with a good potion, then you’re welcome. If you don’t take my class and you end up with a bad potion... Then sometimes we can’t all be on Karma’s good side.”
The man laughed, and then sat his potion down. “So, let’s get started.”

“You didn’t have to say it explicitly, professor. Your answer tells me more than enough. It tells me that the differences between what females and males are irrelevant to you. That you think that The term ‘appropriate’ has the same definition for women in comparison to men. It tells me that you believe that not specifying a single gender counts as being ‘equal’. Moreover, it tells me that you believe a ‘flat’ equality and that’s all I need to know in relationship to my question.” Without another word, she sat back down, disappointed and displeased.
Marcela looked at the girl, confused. “Am I supposed to give specific things that each gender can wear, because giving a broad definition isn’t good enough for you? Do you want me to look at each gender differently, and give them different rules, because the term ‘appropriate’ doesn’t apply to each one? Do you want me to act like the word has two different meanings? It doesn’t. Appropriate is appropriate, no matter where you go. You can say that my equality is flawed all you like, but the problem with equality is that you think women deserve a different equality than men. I don’t understand how that is a reality. I said to dress appropriately. No matter who you are. That stands. Wear clothes. Dress appropriately, like you would for work, or a professional event. I feel like that’s more than an adequate definition regardless of gender, sexuality, or any other way that someone would define themselves. I can’t say ‘girls can wear this, and boys can wear this’ because then I have someone who doesn’t fall into those categories the way you apparently think they do, and they don’t know what to do. I can’t say ‘girls can only wear appropriate dresses,’ because then I’m saying that a boy can’t wear a dress if that’s what he wants to wear. I can’t say that ‘boys can wear whatever they want, but girls can’t,’ because they I have overly sexualized males, who have to deal with negative things said about them just like you do. I also can’t specify girl or boy, because there are some students who might not identify as either, or who might identify as something that goes against what was assigned to them at birth. So I say ‘students must dress appropriately’ because, after all, you might not all be the same gender, sexuality, or what have you, but you all are most definitely students. But if you seem to have your own version of equality that isn’t a blanket statement for everyone--which is what equality is to me, everyone having the same rules--then feel free to discuss it with me later.” She nodded as the girl sat down.
