Information agreement in Danish

In Danish there’s three small words, jo, da and vel, which marks (dis)agreement or uncertainty:

Alberte er sej ‘Alberte is cool’

Alberte er jo sej ‘You and I both think that Alberte is cool‘

Alberte er da sej ‘I think that Alberte is cool, but you apparently don’t’

Alberte er vel sej ‘I think that Alberte is cool, but you/others know it better’

The words can appear after a verb or auxiliary verb (hun danser jo længe, hun kan jo danse længe) or at the end of a clause (Hun er her altid til lukketid, jo).

So look out for these small sentence particles; they can carry loads of meaning! And remember, each of these words also have other uses (e.g. jo is used when answering “yes” to a negative question)

Danish expressions when something costs a fortune

“Det koster det hvide ud af øjnene” [It costs the white out of the eyes]

“Det koster en halv bondegård” [It costs half a farm]

“Det koster spidsen af en jetjager” [It costs the tip of a jet fighter]

Danish drinking

We Danes are often told we are heavy drinkers – and we really are. This might be because of how we look at alcohol and our laws about it.

At 16 years old, we Danes are able to buy our first alcoholic drinks, which contains a certain amount of alcohol. When we turn 18 years of age, we are able to buy all alcohol, no matter the amount of alcohol in it.

However, as you might have guessed, we Danes are introduced to alcohol at an early age. The laws in Denmark do not state that you are not allowed to drink when you are under 16/18 years of age. This means that you can drink alcohol wherever you want to, even if you cannot buy it. Therefore, we do not have a legal drinking age, but a legal buying age. (Although you still have to be 18 to go to bars and such).

Different alcoholic beverages/drinks:

- Øl = beer

- Mjød = mead

- Vin = wine

- Isbjørn = polar bear

- Filur = sly dog

- Kinderæg = kinder egg

- Små kolde = tiny cold

(I tried using some typical Danish ones and ones with Danish names).

So, how do you order a drink?

Jeg vil gerne have en… = I would like a…

Kan jeg bestille en… = Can I order a…

Har I… = Do you have…

A very short one, but I wanted to make you aware of this if you ever decide to visit Denmark – or if you would just like some simple Danish culture knowledge. :)

1. What languages are you studying/have you studied?

German, Spanish, Portuguese and English. I also studied Swedish and Norwegian a little bit, but it wasn’t for very long.

2. How long have you been studying?

I have been studying German for about 4,5 years. I only feel like I did it for the last 1,5 years though, because after the first 3 years I had a break for about half a year, and I forgot almost everything in that break.

I studied Spanish for maybe half a year or so.

I’m currently trying to learn Portuguese and I have been doing so for around 1-2 months.

I have studied English for 9 years.

3. Did you learn through class or self study (or both)?

I have learned German, Spanish and English through class but also self-study. Portuguese has been self-study only.

4. Why did you learn this language?

German: I had to learn German in school for 3 years. After that when I went to upper secondary school, I could choose to have Spanish instead which I did. Long story short, I wanted to switch class, but then I had to switch to German instead of Spanish too. Meanwhile I had forgot basically all my German, and since it was not German for beginners I really hesitated to switch. But I did it anyway, and thought to myself that now I should really try to learn it, not only in school but also outside of school, I didn’t want to be the only one in class who didn’t understood anything. Now I have finished my German class, but I’m still interested in learning German so I can become fluent one day. So it all started with school basically.

Spanish: As I said earlier, I chose to have Spanish instead of German in school. I chose that because first of all my German was awful, so this way I could make a fresh start. But I also chose it, because I really wanted to learn Spanish.

Portuguese: I have this really awesome friend from Brazil, @polyglotpearl, and as we became very good friends, I started to become interested in Brazil too. So I’m planning to visit Brazil in a year, so I would really like to be able to understand and speak some Portuguese by then.

English: I decided to learn English because of school.

5. What was a major highlight/milestone in studying your target language?

When I looked at the comments at some Portuguese songs on Youtube and I actually understood some of them! And when I dreamt in Portuguese, although I didn’t actually understood it xD

6. What was the hardest thing about learning this language?

I think the most difficult thing with German has just been the grammar in general. The most difficult thing with Spanish has been the pronunciation since I can’t pronounce ‘r’/‘rr’.

7. What resources did you find most useful for studying this language?

I really like Duolingo and Memrise. Oh and I have tried Mangolanguages with Portuguese too and I really like this one as well. In school we also had to read a lot of texts in German, I would look up all the words I didn’t understood, and I actually think I learned a lot from this. At first I had to look up a lot of words, almost every single one, but after a while I didn’t look that many up actually.

8. Any top tips for your studying this language?

I can’t really think of anything specific right now, just that I think it’s really important to build a big vocabulary. My German vocabulary has been very small, and that has kinda been a problem for me in school.

9. What’s your next major language goal?

My next goal in Portuguese is to be able to form some simple sentences without looking anything up. Like if I want to say the sky is blue, then I want to be able to say that without any dictionary or something.

Hei! I'm learning Danish and on Mondly there is this sentence "du kører i er bil" , why is there the "i"? What does it mean? Thank you a lot! 🌸

Hey! Thank you very much for asking! I’m so happy to hear that you’re learning Danish! :D

I just want to start off by saying that it should be “en” instead of “er” so the sentence should be “du kører i en bil” :DThe “i” means “in” so the sentence means “you drive in a car”. So you use the “i” to say that it’s in a car you drive and not in e.g. a bus. However, you can also say “du kører bil”. I’m not 100% sure about this, but I think the difference between “du kører bil” and “du kører i en bil” is that “du kører bil” means that you literally drive the car and is not just sitting in the passenger seat, whereas “du kører i en bil” can mean both that you drive the car, but also that you sit in the passenger seat. This may just be me that see it this way though 😅 And then just a little extra information; if someone asked me how I arrive to e.g. a festival, I would just say “jeg kører i bil derover” without the “en” in front of “bil” as this sounds more natural to me. Probably because “en bil” is indefinite.

Anyway, I hope this answered your question and didn’t cause more confusion 🙈 You’re always welcome to ask again :D
