sorry to bother you, but here with a question:
what does 給我 in phrases like 給我沖, 給我滾, 給我回來 , and 給我閉嘴 translate to in english or atleast, how is it that 給我 is used alot for the start of these sorts of phrases that seem very rude or atleast annoyed/emotionally charged 😅?
给 means "to give" and alone 给我 would be "give [it to] me", however in the context of the examples you gave, it becomes "for me", e.g, 给我冲, would be "charge it for me", if the context is filling a card with money or charging a battery, etc, and "charge for me" if the context—more likely, given your other phrases—is "Charge forth!".
However, for English translation, while it can be tempting to try and get as close to the Chinese as possible, doing a word for word translation is also clunky and will give you what I'd call a "translation accent" (I think I was guilty of this for a while in my early days of running this blog). It's better to leave off the 给我 and try to convey the emotion in another way, because yes, the 给我 in a phrase can often make it emotionally charged, as it places emphasis. That emotion can be annoyance or amusement—it just depends. For translation, it helps if there's vocal delivery context but even if not, you should be able to determine the emotional degree of the phrase based on what else is happening in the convo.
From your examples:
Chinese → Clunky literal translation → smoother translation options
给我冲 → Charge for me → Charge! / Rush forth! / Go! / Get them! 给我滚 → Roll for me → Get lost! / Take a hike! / Fuck off! 给我回来 → Come back for me → You get back here! / Come back here! 给我闭嘴 → Close your mouth for me → Shut up! / Zip it!

question, I know Italian is a gendered language, but are there any “gender neutral” romantic pet names people call each other?? (Yes they’re still Italian to ME Tobias!!)
So, I’ve touched on this before, but many “object names” are gender neutral. If you call someone an angel in English, that is a neutral endearment, and it is in Italian too. Angelo mio (my angel) can be said to any gender. Other examples:
Tesoro mio = my treasure
Amore mio= my love
There are exceptions, especially if you’re using pet names (literally); the word “kitten” must be gendered gattino (m) or gattina (f)—but micio, which is a slang word for “cute cat,” is neutral.
Other gender-neutral choices might be
Bene mio = my good(ness), as in, “you are everything that is good for me”
Vita mia = my life
Mio cuore = my heart
There has been an active group of linguists in Italy who have been attempting to create a third GN option for otherwise binary terms like caro and cara (dearest) by ending them with the schwa (ə), rendering them neutral (carə, pronounced CAH-rø), but that initiative hasn’t picked up much speed, unfortunately.
Thanks for your question!

Body Language Descriptions
-> feel free to edit and adjust pronouns as you see fit.
Anxiety/Nervousness
She fidgeted with the hem of her shirt, her fingers tugging nervously at the fabric as she struggled to find the right words.
They bit their lower lip.
He looked away, unable to meet her gaze, a clear indication of his guilt.
She absentmindedly rubbed her neck.
He chewed his nails, a nervous habit that he couldn't seem to quit.
They rubbed their hands together nervously.
He tightened his jaw.
She felt beads of sweat forming on her brow, betraying her calm facade as her heart raced.
Frustration/Impatience
Their fists clenched at their sides.
He tapped his fingers rhythmically against the table, a clear sign of impatience as he waited for her to finish.
He rolled his eyes, the gesture full of exasperation as he dismissed her words.
She let out a heavy sigh, the sound heavy with resignation as she faced the inevitable.
He threw his hands up in defeat.
Curiosity
He leaned forward in his chair, eager to hear more, his eyes sparkling with curiosity.
She raised an eyebrow, her expression skeptical as she questioned his intentions.
She tilted her head slightly.
He watched intently, his eyes wide with wonder as he took in every detail of her story.
Confidence/Assertiveness
He stood tall with his shoulders back, projecting confidence even in the face of uncertainty.
They sat on the edge of their seat.
She gestured wildly, her hands moving animatedly as she tried to express her excitement.
He stood with his hands on his hips, exuding an air of authority and control over the situation.
They held their chin up high, projecting self-assurance even in the face of adversity.
Defensiveness/Resignation
He crossed his arms over his chest, a defensive posture that spoke volumes about his discomfort.
He braced himself against the wall, a protective stance.
She folded her hands in her lap, a sign of restraint as she fought the urge to speak.
They shrank back slightly, their shoulders hunching as if trying to make themselves smaller in the face of criticism.
He held his breath momentarily, steeling himself for the inevitable conflict he sensed was coming.
She covered her face with her hands, overwhelmed by the situation as she tried to block out the world.
Thoughtfulness/Concentration
She furrowed her brow in concentration, her mind clearly racing as she tried to solve the problem at hand.
She nodded slowly, processing the information, her expression thoughtful and contemplative.
He stared blankly into space, lost in thought as he processed what had just been revealed.
He drummed his fingers on the table, the rhythmic sound a sign of his deep contemplation.
She tapped her foot lightly, her mind racing.
Eagerness/Excitement
He paced back and forth, his restless energy manifesting in the constant movement as he considered his options.
She bent forward, her elbows resting on her knees, a sign of intimacy and engagement in the conversation.
She swayed slightly from side to side, a subconscious display of her nervous energy as she waited for the verdict.
He bounced on his toes, his excitement palpable.
She jumped up and down, a spontaneous display of her joy that couldn’t be contained.

how to convey arabic language in a specific dialect is being spoken without lengthy descriptions of how words/specific letters are pronounced?
Anonymous asks:
I believe my question revolves around linguistics, but please correct me if there’s something I didn’t take into account. I’m an Egyptian girl who speaks Arabic (the Egyptian dialect specifically), and I am currently writing an urban fantasy set in modern day Egypt. Naturally, the characters would be speaking Egyptian arabic (i even have a scene where my character converses with a tourist and struggles to speak to them ‘in english’) But as the story is written in english, I found this is really hard to convey, especially with the entirely different alphabet, and the words that simply cannot be transcribed (sometimes in definition, and sometimes in letters that don’t have an equivalent). What would be a good way to send the message that these characters are by no means speaking English (unless stated) without having to hold the reader's hand through lengthy descriptions of how a word is pronounced at every corner?
Hi Anon! This is a tough spot. I’m no expert, just a mod and fellow writer trying to support your fantastic ask. Any bilingual readers, especially other Arabic speakers, feel free to chime in.
1- Disclose they’re speaking Arabic, even though you’re writing in English:
Example A: “Hey, Noor! Wait up,” he said in Arabic.
Example B: “Habibti, I haven’t seen you in a while,” she reminded me. It was true - I had missed the lilt of her Darija-Moroccan dialect-so different from the Mesri, the Egyptian twang, that rolled off my tongue.
2- Consider using Arabic semantic structure or phrases and idioms used mostly in Arabic.
Example A: She reddened with embarrassment. // They whitened at the sight of it. ((English would probably say she ‘turned red’ rather than reddened, or ‘paled’ rather than whitened. Since Arabic has this natural and fun ability to let color be a verb, which English can but doesn't have naturally - make use of it! It will read differently in English because it’s an Arabic construct. Use other examples like this that you’d know better than me.))
Example B: Consider using “May the Gods smite her house!,” instead of the classic English ‘Fuck You.’ Or use “On my eyes” rather than ‘min ayooni’ or its English translation of ‘of course.’ Since Arabic language is beautifully expressive, you could lean into that when you can rather than using common English alternatives.
Example C: Consider interspersing Arabic transliterations of common words/phrases like; habibti/habibi; yani; mashallah casually through the story.
3- When speaking with English speakers, consider using informal text/chat speak (Arabizi?) to communicate the Arabic, since it’s already transliterated to the Roman alphabet. [disclaimer - I am atrocious at this, and will be surprised if anyone can read it… but for science!]:
Example A: Instead of (انت طالب بالجامعة) or “are you a student?” it becomes;
“Ente 6albeh bel jam3a?” I asked, staring at the textbook in his arms.
He looked at me confused. “I don't understand,” he said. “I can’t speak Arabic.”
“Wain 3m tedrus? Where do you… y3ni… where do you study?” I tried again in slow, awkward English.
These examples may or may not work for you. It’s important to remember that there’s no single "right" way to do this, but it’s mostly about finding a balance that reads well, and feels good to you. Subtle cues like sentence structure, idioms, the occasional untranslated word, and natural context can help to show the language shift. Good luck and happy writing!
~ Melanie 🌻
P.S. Mod Meir suggests checking out the book When the Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb, which handles this issue well. There's a lot of "He said in English" or "He repeated it in Yiddish for the old woman's benefit" or "It took him a moment to realize he had spoken in English" (( Thanks Sacha! @kuttithvangu ))

Just learned the character for instigate, 怂, and I'm delighted how much it looks like a mischievous face lol
Haha, 怂 doesn't mean "instigate" on its own, though! It means "terrified". You need bravery, 勇, to start something; 怂恿 means "to instigate", "to urge", etc :)

Hello! I have a question. What does “enben” mean? Is it a replacement for “enby”?
Hi! Good question!
Enben is the plural of enban, the non-binary gendered equivalent of man/woman. It is derived from the term enby. I prefer to use it because enby was initially understood to be a term that referred to non-binary youth. Whilst not everyone uses it that way, I personally prefer to use enban to describe all non-binary people to both show enben that there is more vocabulary to describe ourselves, but also to subtly uninfantilise non-binary people. Enban is a more adult feeling option. It also helps popularise these terms so other enben as well as binary people are aware of nonbinary vocabulary.
Hopefully that was helpful 😌

Can you do some more body language descriptions? For different emotions like Worry, sadness, love, etc!! Ty🩷🩷
Body Language Descriptions
-> feel free to edit and adjust pronouns as you see fit.
Worry
She wrung her hands together, her fingers twisting nervously as she struggled to keep her thoughts in check.
He glanced over his shoulder, his gaze darting anxiously around the room.
She pulled at her sleeve, the movement repetitive and absentminded as her mind raced.
He bit the inside of his cheek, a habit that betrayed his inner turmoil.
They hugged their arms tightly across their chest, as if trying to hold themselves together.
She paced the room, her steps quick and uneven as she tried to shake off the nagging sense of dread.
Sadness
She wiped at her eyes, even though no tears had fallen yet.
He let his shoulders sag, his whole body slumping as if the weight of the world rested on him.
She clutched her scarf tightly, her fingers gripping the fabric like it was the only thing grounding her.
He kept his head low, staring at the ground as if afraid to meet anyone’s eyes.
They let out a shaky exhale, the sound heavy with unspoken grief.
She blinked rapidly, trying to hold back the tears threatening to spill.
Love
She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, her smile soft and shy as she met his gaze.
He brushed her hand lightly, the touch lingering just a moment longer than necessary.
They leaned closer, their knees nearly touching, as if drawn together by an invisible force.
She tilted her head slightly, her expression tender and full of quiet affection.
He laughed easily, the sound warm and unguarded, his gaze never leaving her face.
She reached out to fix his collar, her fingers lingering as she adjusted it carefully.
Guilt
He avoided her eyes, his gaze fixed firmly on the floor.
She rubbed her temples, her hands trembling.
He shifted his weight from foot to foot, unable to stay still.
She clasped her hands tightly behind her back, her knuckles white as she fought to remain composed.
They bit their lower lip, their jaw tightening.
He fidgeted with the edge of his sleeve, his movements jerky and hesitant.
Fear
She took a step back, her breath quickening as her eyes darted to the nearest exit.
He clenched the fabric of his shirt over his chest, as if trying to steady his pounding heart.
She froze in place, her body stiff and her movements tentative, like a deer caught in headlights.
He swallowed hard, his throat bobbing visibly as he fought to calm himself.
They pressed their back against the wall, their hands splayed out.
She whispered under her breath, her words shaky and barely audible.
Jealousy
He crossed his arms over his chest, his jaw tightening as his gaze followed her every move.
She tapped her foot impatiently, the rhythm sharp and irritated as she forced a smile.
He clenched his fists at his sides, the tension in his knuckles betraying his calm demeanor.
She cast a sideways glance, her lips pressed into a thin line.
They shifted in their seat, their shoulders stiff.
He ran his fingers through his hair, his movements brisk and frustrated as he fought to contain his thoughts.
Relief
She exhaled deeply, her shoulders dropping as the tension melted away.
He ran a hand down his face, his smile faint but unmistakably genuine.
She laughed shakily, her hand pressed to her chest as if trying to steady her racing heart.
He slumped against the nearest chair, his legs suddenly too weak to hold him up.
They let their head fall back, their eyes closing as a soft, contented sigh escaped their lips.
She smiled faintly, her fingers tracing idle patterns on the surface of the table as the weight lifted from her mind.
Embarrassment
She tugged at the collar of her shirt, her cheeks flushing as she avoided everyone’s gaze.
He rubbed the back of his neck, his lips twitching into an awkward, forced smile.
She bit her lip, her hands fluttering nervously.
He let out a strained laugh, scratching the side of his head.
They hid their face in their hands, peeking out between their fingers with a sheepish grin.
She stumbled over her words, her fingers twisting the hem of her shirt as her cheeks burned bright red.
