I donāt know when it became mainstream to shit on girls for riding horses. Itās not cool. Even in the queer community Iāve heard countless horse girl jokes. In the new Hulu movie main character āPaigeā swiftly decides to not approach a girl because she is a ā horse gayā. From my perspective I felt like Iād never find love growing up because I was gay. Now Iām out and happy and feel like Iām being prejudiced against for my profession. I think its a genuine problem for ā horse girlsā to get stereotyped this way in media.

I think I just realized why I get along so well with people that are extroverted, antagonistic, openly loud or egotistical even though Iām the complete opposite. It because at least they show you how they feel, theyāre easy to read. Much easier than kind, healthy, wholesome people are to see through. Somewhere along the line I started to believe that happiness was a facade. Just a curtain to hide how you really feel. Easily faked. I guess it means Iād rather be stabbed in the front than in the back.

The American conservative āadvocates for parental rights in schoolsā known as Moms for Liberty have been busy working on making sure your children are protected from things like critical race theory (CRT), and any talk about gender identities (and LGBTQ+ stuff). Floridaās transphobic and homophobic and childhood-phobic conservatives scored a big legislative victory in March when state legislators were able to pass the āDonāt Say Gayā bill through into law. Its official name is the āParental Rights in Educationā bill and while it technically never mentions the word āgay,ā the bill is a pretty obvious overreach into the rights of entire swathes of the American public. As such, lawsuits are already being filed against the Sunshine state.
Moms for Libertyās Twitter account posted what they are calling a letter template for rebellious teachers to send home in regard to the new legal guidelines they are now forced to deal with as a result of the general pig-headed phobias of people like Moms for Liberty. Writing āA teacher in Palm Beach County, FL shared this template with us. It is being shared among teachers to use for grades K-3. How do you feel about this? What will you do when this arrives home in your childās backpack? Time to take a Stand,ā the letter is a little slice of genius, and the responses to this conservative freakout have been [takes a meditative breath] beautiful.
The letter serves to point out how, in its vague language, the billās authors have attempted to veil their bigotries and fears under the guise of parental rights. It does this by using the lawās truly banal purposes against the very parents who are pretending that this law isnāt very specifically about being homophobic and transphobic and queerphobic.
First the letter:
Dear Florida parent/caretaker:
The Florida house of Representatives has recently ruled that āClassroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students.ā
To be in accordance with this policy, I will no longer be referring to your student with gendered pronouns. All students will be referred to as āTheā or āthem.ā I will no longer use a gendered title such as āMr.ā or āMrs.ā or make any references to my husband/wife in the classroom. From now on I will be using the non-gendered title āMx.ā
Furthermore, I will be removing all books or instruction which refer to a person being a āmother,ā āFather,ā āhusbandā or āwifeā as these are gender identities that also may allude to sexual orientation. Needless to say, all books which refer to a character as āheā or āSheā will also be removed from the classroom. If you have any concerns about this policy, please feel free to contact your local congressperson.
Thank you, Mx. XXXXXXXXXX
Whether this is a real ātemplateā being handed out to teachers who see the donāt say gay bill for what it really is or if this is just one of those great memes that has truly pressed these āMoms for Libertyāsā buttons does not matter. Bridget Ziegler, co-founder of Moms for Liberty, Fox News talking face, and precinct committeewoman for the Republican Party of Sarasota County retweeted the letter, writing, āOnce again, itās unfortunate our students and their education are being hijacked by the Leftās culture wars. Ā Thank goodness more educators, many whom are parents of young children, are speaking up and pushing back!ā
The responses have been wonderful.

Iāve got to be honest
I think coming out to your family feels like pulling a dry tampon out.
Like pulling the dry tampon out of your soul for everyone to see.
Itās not a good feeling while itās happening but once its out, you feel better.

āMy motherās voice..ā
I remember being 17 and hiding my smile talking to Julia in the corner store.
God forbid it shine to bright and show what lays beneath.
I think maybe people thought I was shy or aloof but really Iād say or do just about anything to keep them at arms distance.
Just far enough away that they couldnāt see the truth in my eyes.
I was yellow flowers and surface level friendliness and selective truth telling.
It was that summer that I realized I didnāt want to be that person anymore.
I wanted to be honest.. the type of honest I was as a child.
Open and unflinching maybe almost naively so
It was that summer that i realized i didnāt have to listen to the little voice in the back of my head telling me the way I felt was gross. It was my motherās voice. Not mine.

Topics that I want to reflect on this year.
Topic 1 : Privacy vs secrecy.
Iāve recently been listening to a lot of podcasts, most recently podcasts that Andrew Scott is featured in. He talks a lot about how he felt as a young gay person and brought up the distinction between privacy and secrecy.
I think thatās an important discussion to have. I think even if your ok and accepting of who you are, there are still times where you feel ashamed. Maybe not of being āqueerā but of feeling like your keeping something to yourself that you donāt bring up in random conversation. Itās a strange gray area to live in. I want to be more mindful of that.
Another thing that he spoke about was the usage of the word ā openlyā in media. How if you put the word āopenlyā in front of any other word ( for example openly Irish) it brings a sort of bad connotation to that word. As if to suggest that its something thatās usually done behind close doors or not normal. When it is normal really. Just another random fact about you. Possibly less important than the fact that you like to put ketchup on your eggs. Which in my opinion is a deal breakerā¦
I donāt really know where Iām going with this little tangent but I needed to document it because it felt important and Iāll come back to it.
Part 1ā¦.
#andrew scott#lgbtq#what am i supposed to tag this as#dont mind my rambling#gaypride#hot priest#lol#fleabag#i donāt know why iām thinking about this#I may have completely butchered this train of thought
