Sunny day Selfie 🌞 My neighbourhood was already the most innovative in the city, but today that only increased with the permanent installation of approximately 40 new murals behind some of my favourite shops and cafes by local artists here in Vancouver. I am so proud of this city for understanding the importance of public art and supporting its accessibility to the public. Unconventional art forms visible in such high concentrations in populous areas tend to be topics of controversy in most cities, or have an expiration date in its presence. And while there's a fundamental difference between street art and murals, both tend to be perceived as a single art form that is typically looked down upon. Therefore seeing the community support behind the Vancouver Mural Festival left me beyond gratified. Today especially reminded me of why I choose to be an advocate for self-expression, art education, and art accessibility. #art #artist #localartist #mural #muralart #vanmuralfest #publicart #installation #Vancouver #eastvan #MountPleasant #community #accessibility #arteducation (at Kafka's Coffee and Tea)

"Self-portrait," 2007. Digital Print. There is something special about the way I interact with her work. A very similar language is exchanged to that of when I am communicating with Frida Kahlo's works (this self-portrait actually reminded me of her). I am immediately vulnerable and exposed, yet feel safe in the solace of her presence. I also understand immediately the core of where her art is being expressed from, and why it is being expressed. It's a beautiful experience to have an array of identifying feelings, and personal conversations through one's art. Thank you for your enriching exhibition @bkherful ! And shout out to @hauserwirth for assistance in supplying these works! • • • #art #artist #museum #gallery #exhibition #BhartiKher #sculpture #identity #gender #female #feminism #hybrid #procreation #reproduction #life #mythology #bindi #chakra #Hindu #BhartiKherMatter (at Vancouver Art Gallery)

"Femme Couché Lisant," 1960. Welcome to Vancouver Pablo Ruiz! 🤗🖐🏽 Picasso is accredited as the most original contributor to modern art, mainly as a result of his ability to invent and reconstruct various art movements throughout the span of his lifetime. Perhaps this is what we find most captivating about Picasso, both his oeuvre and as a figure; possessing the innate ability to embody numerous artistic styles and express them in a bold, yet rare and provocative manner. Picasso juggled a handful of women between Fernande and Jacqueline, and each played a vital role in the emergence of these diverse styles. What I love about the curation of this exhibition are the questions and discussions that arise in regards to women and their bodies, and gaining an overall sense of how Picasso himself perceived sexuality and the female figure. It is difficult to pinpoint Picasso’s attitude towards women when analyzing the deviating nature of his works not only in this exhibition, but as a whole. He understood and respected the soft, maternalistic qualities of women, yet he engaged in infedelity and was also capable of portraying the sexual nature associated with prostitution. While it is natural for an artist’s oeuvre to display a progression in technique and style, Picasso's demonstrated a rare sense of individuality through his deliberate attempts at radicalism and non-conformity. His inconsistencies in style alludes to the magical and forever re-imaginative manner that he viewed the world. There were no limitations as to what he could achieve, because he did not believe in boundaries; they simply did not exist. #Picasso #PabloPicasso #Pablo #ThelifeofPablo #TheWifeofPablo #SorryKimK #artist #painter #exhibition #museum #nightatthemuseum #gallery #opening #modernart #contour #lines #drawing #muse #women #female #femalefigure #feminism #body #control #vancouver #VAG (at Vancouver, British Columbia)

"Nu couché au lit bleu," 1946. Here we have a very pregnant Francoise-Gilot (that's right, not a boat people😜#caughtyou). Such a stellar piece of work with varying levels compositionally. Picasso always captured the essence of his figures; there was never the intention of depicting a self-portrait. "Heroic Head, or Head of a Woman," 1921. I am absolutely obsessed with Picasso’s Neoclassicism period. It’s interesting because although he had departed from Cubism at this point, the shading in his drawing are still geometrically blocked out, almost rendering the figures Renaissance statuesque-like. This pastel drawing of Russian dancer Olga took my breath away. In addition to “Bust of a Woman (Dora Maar)," I spent a great deal of time with this one. Members were getting to the point where they were literally pushing me away. #Oops (Also shoutout to my fabulous photographer @nisiyoi for always playing Paparazzi and producing these killer shots👏🏽❤️) #Picasso #PabloPicasso #Pablo #ThelifeofPablo #olgakhokhlova #artist #painter #exhibition #museum #nightatthemuseum #gallery #opening #modernart #contour #lines #drawing #muse #women #female #femalefigure #feminism #body #control #vancouver #VAG (at Vancouver Art Gallery)

Hey girl, hey🙋🏽We finally have the pleasure of being acquainted🙏🏽 "Bust of a Woman (Dora Maar)," 1938. What a beauty. Picasso was an innovator in the sense that he had the ability to understand varying levels of both reality and the surreal. Viewers have experienced a softer style from him during the Blue and Rose Periods, while at this point in his artistic career, he became quite comfortable portraying the female figure in a more gruesome and slightly sadistic nature (seen here with Dora Maar for example). Picasso has taken on more surrealist styles that rebelled against his former classical French and Spanish teachings. Picasso's Dora Maar portraits are amongst my top favourites from his oeuvre. Maar was a Surrealist photographer who introduced Picasso to these new concepts. It is beyond clear how inspired he was by her, and how much he learned from her. This was the style that directly integrated hints of Fauvism and became a departure from Cubism as collage. • • • #Picasso #PabloPicasso #Pablo #ThelifeofPablo #DoraMaar #artist #painter #exhibition #museum #nightatthemuseum #gallery #opening #modernart #contour #lines #drawing #muse #women #female #femalefigure #feminism #body #control #vancouver #VAG (at Vancouver Art Gallery)

"L’homme et Femme," 1970. Merely significant in that it is emotionally tied to being one of the very last he ever painted.
