Mini holiday - mini project
Mini holiday – mini project
Ugly slab table with potential? Woohoo – I have a mini 1 week holiday, the first in a long time. After such a weird few years it was high-time I burnt off some steam with a little project. Let’s go!!! I went to our nearest recycling center and found a few goodies to restore and play with. One being an ugly slab table that I felt had ‘some’ potential, some subltle mid century vibes, biophilic…

Busy making little gifts for little friends.
We are busy today making little Christmas crackers – without the bang – containing a small choc and a couple of stickers as a small token of appreciation for all the little friends my poppet has accumulated this year. Pretty cheap and easy to do and means so much to little people! It just takes a little time and effort but for the little happy smiles it is worth it!

HOW TO: HAVE A SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS — Higgins Living
Christmas is almost here and I’ve been searching the web and thinking of ideas for a more sustainable christmas this year. 2020 has been a crazy year and I think we all realised how important it is to be more concious about what we buy, use and eventually throw out. Here are some really great […]HOW TO: HAVE A SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS — Higgins Living

2020 has been a year of doom and gloom - banish it with some Christmas cheer!
2020 has been a year of doom and gloom – banish it with some Christmas cheer!
We put up our Christmas tree today. A charity supporting tree with 100% thrifted decorations. This year we focused on sourcing beautiful vintage and quality decorations (forever pieces – a little bit of luxury) and the best places to buy them are thrift shops believe it or not!! Most of the decorations are either ceramic, heavy glass, metal or delicate glass beaded embroidered pieces. We were…

Second lock down with an added side of chaos..... completed!
Second lock down with an added side of chaos….. completed!
The situation here in NZ has been somewhat chaotic lately. Auckland is in a water crisis with our dam water levels significantly under where they should be (at today’s reading we are 23.91% lower than the historical average, crikey).
Then another bout of COVID with 1 community cluster identified. The team of 5,000,000 quickly assumed strike positions and hunkered down at home to starve the virus…

NZ Lockdown - announcement day!!!
NZ Lockdown – announcement day!!!
Hi All,
Today is a big day for all of us here in NZ. We get to know if our cabin fever will be relieved by a reduction in alert level…… or not….
Honestly, what I wouldn’t do for a cafe breakfast, or takeaways right now….. Ihave never really been a KFC fan but the whole family is thinking ‘mmmmmm KFC’ lately.
I’ve not posted in a few days because I managed to break a computer, and my other devices…

NZ lockdown - what to do about Easter
NZ lockdown – what to do about Easter
Easter is coming up so fast and we will still be in lockdown. I have it on good authority that people are still panic buying in the stores and there are none of the usual Easter treats are to be had. *sadface*.
So, in times like these we will have to be creative! If you have kiddies you might like to give some of these ideas a try.
Salt dough Easter egg tree ornaments.
With a few basic…

NZ Lockdown - craft
NZ Lockdown – craft
Being creative is good for the soul.
These are a few of the crafty things we’ve been doing to pass the time. We’ve lost count of how many days we’ve been on lockdown and even what day it is…..
I have been knitting, a mad woman’s knitting project – the best kind. I don’t know what it is going to be but it will be eccentric whatever it is.

Painting rocks to hide and seek in the garden….

COVID reach out - How are you my friends?
COVID reach out – How are you my friends?

Hello Friends,
How are you? Are you OK?
I have been watching the John Hopkins dashboard and have been thinking of you all everyday.
The news (if at all) that we get in NZ about other countries experiences with the pandemic is vague and at times contradictory.
Are you in isolation yet? what’s happening over there in your areas? – let us know in the comment section below please.

Lockdown day - Lost count already - DIY......
Lockdown day – Lost count already – DIY……
Saturday started with a DIY. Hubby got out the front to rip out the front deck and replace it. It was rotten and full of holes when we brought the place 2 years ago and was getting worse each time winter rolled around. We each had a job, Mummy stayed out of the way, baked bread and lunch treats for hard workers. Kiddo, supervised and gave encouragement by yelling ‘You’re doing a great job…

Lockdown day 3 - cook
Lockdown day 3 – cook
Today we cooked some savoury snacks and bread…… Bread, like toilet paper, is scarce. Last time I saw a loaf bread in the shops was 2 weeks ago at the supermarket when someone had abandoned 1 loaf in the canned vegetable isle. Needless to say I grabbed it, but it was the last loaf in the store and I haven’t seen any since. So reviewing the basics has become a necessity for us.
There are so many…

Lockdown day 1 - make some non dairy plant based milks
Lockdown day 1 – make some non dairy plant based milks
I have never been a big fan of non-dairy milks. A common occurrence for me is I also often make a French press coffee in the morning just to pour it and discover no milk in the fridge. So with the lockdown and trying to save money, dairy milk and reduce unnecessary trips to the shops, I am gonna give nut mylks another go.
We go through so much dairy milk a week we should really invest in a cow.…

Gardening is never done.......
Gardening is never done…….
We’ve been so busy with the backyard with the vision, digging, pruning and weeding that the front yard has been throughly neglected…. it was only the other day that I was struggling with what to do in the front yard to be as equally as attractive as the backyard. It’s so overgrown and crazy with sideways growing wild-lings (self sown trees growing where they probably shouldn’t be)… and bamboo…
