What moment in anime/fandom that you experienced as a kid had a profound effect on you? I’ll start. When I watched evangelion for the first time and Kaworu said he loved Shinji, it was the first time I ever saw a gay couple in a show and actually understood what was going on (I had seen Madoka Magica prior but 12 year old me didn’t pick up on the very obvious subtext).

I remember being like “wait, Shinji’s gay? Omg that makes so much sense.” Also they were the first characters that I ever actively shipped.

What do you actually call this character archetype?

I’ve seen it a lot in anime and it has enough motifs that I’m starting to think it’s its own genre of character. The motifs include:

-male

-gay or queer coded

-villain/antagonistic force/source of conflict

-moderately to severely emotionally unstable

-deep emotional attachment to another male character, almost always with dark hair

-non masculine build (at least not stereotypically masculine)

-light colored/grey hair (maybe albino??? They’re all pale with light eyes as well)

PS: I haven’t actually seen Future Diary but I heard someone say Aru fits the archetype so I thought I’d include him.
