Also, forgot to add this is the first post about Suo, but my loose thoughts about him possibly having to leave might be related to his "dream" which is literally the emancipation of slaves, nobody has something that elaborate, it's just, if you keep adding all the little things we know about Suo and link them to the topics of the story it kind of paints a very grim picture for him.

What do we know about Suo:

- His eye patch is said to be linked to a past incident, or so does Nirei say, he says there's an ancient Chinese dragon sealed there that sometimes wants to escape, idk about you guys, but this honestly made me thing he does have a traumatic eye injury, and saying the things about it trying to escape the seal might be a way to convey that it hurts sometimes without actually saying it, traumatic injuries like that are linked to future chronic pain in the area in flares. Hold on on the Chinese aspect of the thing for a moment because I'm going to talk about it later.

- People don't know shit about him before joining Furin, even though they do know he existed before that, they know he's an excellent fighter but not who he's fought against, which is weird. However Tsugeura seems to have personally met him before Furin and still he seems to know nothing about him.

- His middle school must have been in Makochi if they knew about him, or that's what I think is implied, however that's weird because it seems that nobody (Tsugeura excluded) had even met him in the street before.

- He mentions a master, but the way he does it makes me think he's not around anymore, not in a "they're dead" way,but more in a "haven't seen them in a while" way. Which to me means Suo's master must have deemed his training and formation done, but in order to get to that point by the time he's 15, or maybe 14, since his master being gone might predate his first year at Furin, he must've trained under him for a long while and very hard.

- Suo's file mentions "brothers" and the way it does so grouping them with his master makes me feel pretty sure about thinking these are not brothers by blood, but rather brothers because they trained under the same master. Keep this in mind please, also Suo admires them, which makes me think they must've been older. But much like his master I don't think they're around him anymore.

- Suo tends to wear collared shirts, never takes them off, not even at the beach from what the CD has let us know. That is a bit fishy and I have a couple theories about it but I'm keeping them for the China related section.

Okay, let me rant now about the prevalence of Chinese elements on Suo's character, I'm far from an expert in Chinese culture but I'm going to try:

- okay, I'm going to sound crazy, when Suo first introduces himself to Sakura, and technically to the audience, as Leonardo DiCaprio, Nirei corrects his name to Suo Hayato, and Suo's way of answering got me curious, "that's what they call me". And this sparked a lot of theories amongst people of him using a fake name so he wouldn't be recognised by other gangs or whatever but, please stay with me, I feel like this might be deeper than that.

Now you guys are definitely going to think I'm a lunatic, we know China has a big "child trafficking" issue, Suo seems to surround himself with elements of Chinese culture from his clothing to the meaning of his Japanese name, that's right, I do think Suo might have another name and that his Japanese one is not the original, why, well, he might've actually been Chinese and trafficked as a child, taken in my his master and his disciples, which would explain him referring to them as brothers, and also would mean that he speaks either Mandarin or Cantonese Chinese, since it is stated in his file that he speaks "another language" which honestly that was said in a way that told me "that other language he speaks is going to be relevant to his story", if it wasn't it would've been simply stated. Also, this would mean Suo had a Chinese name prior to this and it might've been changed for a Japanese one by his master to keep him safe. Option number 2, whoever Suo's family was in China they might've had issues with a criminal organisation and Suo just got taken in by his master and moved to Japan to keep him from danger, and that's why he's so paranoid about being found. I mean, this could've also very well just been his master being Chinese and him just taking inspiration and habits from him, or his parents being Chinese but they ended up in Japan somehow. But the way the thing about him knowing a second language was stated in his file makes me think the darker options are more feasible. Also, the whole emancipation of slaves thing, sound sketchy, you know.

Also, going back to the clothing, regardless of the route it takes above, it might be that Suo either has a mark from said human trafficking, has a mark from an organisation his parents belonged to (maybe this one is a bit of a stretch), has scars, maybe from old Chinese discipline methods that involve flagellation for imperfections (during training maybe or a family thing) or there's a background of abuse or maybe the incident that damaged his eye left scars in other places as well. There could be a lot of reasons why he refuses to take off his shirt and wears a high collar.

Anyways, that's it so far, whatever it is the mysterious ways we're given facts about Suo are really making me think we're getting a pretty intense backstory when his turn comes.

(I can't believe I ended up making a whole post about this lol. Anon I hope u enjoy it bcs I def enjoyed rambling about Suo & thinking abt this question, thanks for sending the ask💖)

I think Suo is one of the smartest characters, if not the smartest (maybe saying he is the smartest is going too far, but I think he is one of the smartest at least). Not only is he smart in general, but I also think one of his most prominent traits is his emotional intelligence. He is the first one to see any kind of situation on a deeper level, he easily connects the dots in different situations & he quickly understands how other people feel.

Ofc there are other smart characters, like Nirei or Ume, who are smart in their own way. For example I think Ume is very “wise”, like his experiences have made him smart and wise, whereas Nirei is very smart when it comes to learning new information, like kind of related to memory and learning speed.

But when it comes to Suo, I think he kind of “outshines” the rest with his emotional intelligence. I think that the traits that highlight his emotional intelligence are his ability to handle relationships, understand how others feel and (most of the time) hide how he truly feels.

We can see his emotional intelligence in many scenes: when the trio and Tsubaki visit the grandpa and talk about the grandpa’s deceased wife, Suo quickly explains how the wife might have felt in that past situation when the dogwood tree was planted. In that same scene, it also becomes clear that he has a lot of knowledge of flower language and flowers in general. Another scene where his emotional intelligence is visible is when Sakura is sick and Nirei insists on staying, but Suo gives Sakura the space he’s asking for. Later Suo explains to Nirei why he gave Sakura space.

He’s also smart overall: he is the one who thoroughly plans the Noroshi arc fight & he clearly knows how to think both logically and emotionally. What I liked about him planning the Noroshi fight is that he considers outcomes “realistically” (of course he’s also hopeful that his friends will succeed, but he stays realistic too, he thinks about the negative outcomes too, he plans things carefully). That’s why I think he is very good at logical thinking: he doesn’t just cling to hope and call it a day.

I think his emotional intelligence also reflects his maturity. For example, when the trio is in the entertainment district and one of the guys with Kanji gives Suo a nod (indicating they should leave now and leave the fighting to the adults) and Suo immediately agrees and tells Sakura they should hurry up and leave.

He speaks another language too & he always gives his opponents “lessons” with his words. I think the words and the “lessons” he gives to his opponents are different from all the other characters who talk during a fight too (for example, Sakura and Togame, or Ume and Takiishi). I’ve seen this discussed in other posts here, the fact that his lessons basically leave no room for others to respond.

In the end, Suo’s predictions about his opponents’ feelings and actions are always correct. He knows how to humiliate them because he understands their intentions quickly. He kind of “exposes” his opponents’ feelings and bad intentions, making a fool out of them (because they are fools lol). The way Suo makes his opponents realize what they’re doing wrong is completely different from how the others do it (for example comparing it to Ume with Choji).

He also helps his friends realize things about themselves, helping them grow, like helping Nirei and Sakura with their personal growth. I think Suo is a key “component” in that. He understands his friends even when they don’t express how they feel in a straightforward way (for example, when Nirei initially didn’t admit to Suo that he felt helpless for not being able to fight like the others and later asked Suo to teach him how to fight, Suo noticed that smtn was bothering Nirei).

Related to the Nirei-Suo teacher-disciple dynamic, I think we can also see Suo’s emotional intelligence here. He has the patience and willingness to go through the process of teaching someone a skill from scratch. This shows one of the core parts of Suo’s emotional intelligence: his empathy. He is able to empathize with his friends (like Nirei’s feelings of helplessness about not being able to fight, or Sakura’s feelings of guilt and burden for example in the Keel arc, when Sakura said he could fight all the opponents). But he also “empathizes” with his enemies, though in a different way (by teaching them “lessons”).

All of this makes me wonder what kind of childhood he might have had. What did he go through to become as emotionally intelligent as he is? I bet many of his past experiences shaped the way he thinks and behaves now in the story, especially his master, like I’m sure his master is a key element when it comes to Suo’s behavior and emotional growth.

The last thing that comes to my mind about his emotional intelligence is his ability to control his emotions. In some scenes we clearly see that he is an emotional person even if he tries to hide it most of the time (for example when he lashes out on certain occasions, like in the Keel arc). What I’m trying to say is that the self-control of his emotions is also a sign of his emotional intelligence.

Related to his ability to control his emotions is also his confidence and composure. He’s able to give quick responses, and we haven’t seen him crumble (which got me thinking: what would make him lose his composure?). His emotional control gives him mental clarity too, and I think that’s why he can respond to different situations and comments so quickly. This ability he has of being so good at controlling his emotions and quickly deciding what to say and what not to say (he easily dismisses anything he doesn’t like) feels like both a strength and kind of a burden: in the end he might be avoiding not just bad people but also good people getting too close to him.

Overall, I think his greatest “smart” trait is his emotional intelligence, but he is also very good at logical thinking, problem solving & shows maturity, especially in the way he gives “lessons” to his opponents. Of course being mature doesn’t equal being smart or intelligent, but being mature can lead to intelligent decisions (lol why does this sound like a motivational quote).

I can't believe I rambled this much abt Suo and we barely even know anything about him lol (I think this shows how good of a writer Nii-sensei is, bcs he is able to convey all these traits abt Suo & yet he's still the most mysterious one). These are some of the first thoughts that come to my mind when I think of Suo and his intelligence & I'd love to hear what others have to say abt this topic! This ended up being a whole analysis looool but I enjoyed thinking abt this a lot!

Just a thought about 🌸🫖 and how their actions towards food possibly reflect who they are (from pure delulu):

Food is a reoccurring theme in wbk and it may symbolize love and acceptance. 🌸 likes to eat a lot and can be a little greedy. He looks forward to meals and is open to try new things like the frappuccino. He also likes omurice, a full meal. 🌸 isn't much into veggies tho 😅

Then we have 🫖 who is seen to not eat a lot and reasons to be on a diet. He does however offer food even the stuff he bakes (info from winhero but I couldn't find the ss 😭). The times we do see him eating with others is him just having water or tea, something light.

Also, free food is often given to the Furin students as thanks from the townsfolk. 🌸 receives food from the townsfolk (with a blushy face 🤭) and while the same goes for 🫖, it seems that he gives them away or just doesn't eat (diet excuse).

If we replace food with love and acceptance, we can see that 🌸 is open to it (despite his initial scare) and is getting used to being loved and accepted whether he admits it or not. He craves love since he probably didn't have a lot of it in his childhood. Love keeps him full.

Now it's different with 🫖. He seems to be the type to give love and it's in bits and pieces rather than a whole thing. 🫖 seems to consciously restrain himself from accepting it thus settling for what he is already used to (tea). If he's full, we may not know (yet anyway).

And 🌸 eats a lot especially after a fight! To further fuel the delusion, love keeps 🌸 going after a physical and emotionally draining encounter.So what about 🫖? What does he fight for/keeps him going?

I think this is where the importance of Tsugeura's question of what 🫖's virtue is, which 🫖 is yet to answer btw.

NOW IM CURIOUS do you have a theory as to what happened to suo’s eye?? i’ve seen a few suggesting he’s a victim of human trafficking, was sold into slavery by his abusing/powerful parents, etc. i’m still not sure what i think happened 🥲

hmmmmmmmm ok so lemme be so frank here im still rlly new to the wbk fandom so im still no so familiar with the theories and inside jokes n allat so bear with me here ok

the human trafficking and slavery thing is actually really interesting because there are a lot of things about suo that stood out like a burning red flag to me while i was reading the manga. if you didn't know this, i'm chinese and i know a lot about chinese culture and i speak mandarin fluently. in chinese, suo can be written as 锁, which means lock. wbk has a lot of characters whose names represent them (ie; sakura - cherry blossoms are often representative of sakura in manga panels, endo - it can mean fire and it describes how he talks about takiishi like a "burning inferno"), and suo's meaning lock in chinese and him being fond of chinese culture and items is really interesting, because a lock holds something down or keeps it away.

and i know that there is a kanji (japanese writing) for his name, but this is interesting as well. the 2 kanji that make up "suo" mean "revive, resurrection" and "raft, wood". revive or resurrection almost means to be reborn in a way, or to live a whole new life or to come back from the dead, perhaps hinting that suo has revived from a near death experience or the lowest point of his life. the raft and wood part could imply that he escaped whatever he was locked to (likely trafficking) using some sort of raft. i also know that the letters combined means "sappan wood", which i just think is a reference to his character color because this is literally the color of sappan wood dye:

now let's get into the main part of this theory. we have heard time and time again that suo is fond of chinese items. his last name can be translated into "lock" in chinese. i've mentioned that he might've escaped from whatever he was locked to by some sort of raft. i'm going to talk about some heavy topics, so bear with me here. i believe that suo might have been born in china, got trafficked, then escaped to japan overseas using a raft with help, then changed the lettering of his last name. outlandish, i know. but i have evidence.

we know that suo doesn't move in his sleep from an official art by nii satoru. weird timing here, but in history, when african americans were on ships to be sold off to slavery, they were shackled to tight and compact spaces to sleep and eat. i'm so sorry if anyone is sensitive to these topics or thinks that talking about this stuff because of a manga is ridiculous, but since this is a theory, i had to bring it up. i'm sorry. but the slaves weren't allowed to move because there were so many people, and it would be too hot and too crowded if they moved around. plus, the shackles restrained most of their movement anyways. i suspect that suo might've been in a similar situation and just developed a habit of not moving around in his sleep.

i'd also like to mention that human trafficking is, unfortunately, still a heavy problem in china. north korean escapees--especially women--will nearly always require the help of a smuggler, who is a man (who, in this specific scenario, is chinese) who will smuggle them into china but sell them to human traffickers. i doubt that this is the case with suo, but i think it's still an important topic to bring up when we're making a theory about a character who could potentially have been trafficked.

now here's some more. here is a map of east asia.

as you can see, there are definitely ways to get to china to japan by boat. i don't think suo could have ever rafted here alone; i don't think some random kid would have been able to register himself an id or anything either. suo is 15 currently in the story, and we know that he's been in japan long enough to make a name for himself. and in case you're pointing out "but his first name is japanese!", people can legally change their first names.

the reason why no one knows who he actually defeated in middle school, if this theory is true (which is highly unlikely), is because he was middle school age, but not actually in middle school when he defeated them. maybe he was still in china at the time. idk.

so short answer: yes, he was human trafficked, and there was some sort of scar left behind. sorry i had a whole yap session, i kind of looked into the og mentioned theory because i'd never heard this theory before, but i ended up getting invested and made my own😭

Suo’s rejection of Sakura’s request could also be an additional metaphor to how he alienates himself from Furin and its values. Despite it being a person he values and cares for, Suo refuses to let himself be vulnerable around Sakura, keeping him at an arms length distance like he does with the rest of his peers.

Speaking of Sakura, I find it interesting how Suo admires Sakura’s straightforwardness (as shown in the Wind Breaker game).
