SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Teaser Trailer: Enter Mysterio
Marvel and Sony releases the first teaser trailer for their much anticipated sequel, Spider-Man: Far From Home.
This year is positioning itself to be another banner year for comic book movie fans. Whether it’s Glass, Captain Marvel, or one of the most anticipated sequels of all-time with Avengers: Endgame, film lovers will get their fill of bombastic superhero action. The latter movie will also set the table for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Peter Parker will be leading the way in the this summer’s followup, Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Spider-Man Glides
Tom Holland is back as the titular hero and this time he is taking his act outside of New York and the United States and going on a globetrotting adventure. In the sequel, the Webslinger finds himself on a summer excursion with his classmates and leaves his Spider-Man suit and persona in Queens. However, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) intercepts him during his trip and recruits him to take on overseas threats known as the Elementals.
Jake Gyllenhaal in Spider-Man: Far From Home
He is assisted by Quentin Beck aka Mysterio, played by Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, who is seemingly working on the side of good. Fans of the comics will undoubtedly be waiting for the Beck’s turn because the master of illusions is known for his powers of manipulation.
Mysterio battles Hydraman in Spider-Man: Far From Home
The trailer also leans heavily into Parker’s social life, with his best friend Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) continuing to serve as his confidant and comic relief. The sequel also looks to increase the romance between him and MJ, as the film looks to lean more into the comic book romance and love affair between the two. While it also looks like Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) and Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) will also be finding a bit of romance as well.
MJ and Peter Parker
The teaser trailer is over two minutes long and offers much of the youthful spirit and energy that Homecoming offered, while continuing the maturation of Parker. There is still a lot more to come from the sequel, but for now, enjoy the trailer:

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Second Trailer Promises A Monster Brawl

Legendary Pictures releases the second full length trailer for their upcoming MonsterVerse sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
It has been a brawl at the box-office these past few years and there are no signs of things slowing down in the near or far future. Superheroes, animated flicks, and biopics have roped in audiences worldwide and just when it seems that there couldn’t possibly be any more contenders. One of the biggest, baddest movie stars to ever grace the silver screen is prepped to return… and this time he has backup.
In 2014, Legendary Pictures started off the summer season with the reboot of the Toho’s Godzilla franchise. Rogue One’s Gareth Edwards directed the new Godzilla, with an ground-level perspective to this new more grounded tale. The film’s slow reveal of the titan split audiences, with some praising its deliberate approach, while others fidgeted in their chairs waiting for the monster on monster action to materialize. Now the mutant is back and ready to formerly reclaim his title as Godzilla: King of the Monsters in the upcoming sequel.
The follow-up harkens back to the 1991 Neo Geo video game, King of the Monsters, where players could control giant monsters in city wide brawls. However, the sequel looks to incorporate many of Godzilla’s most iconic film adversaries into the story. The mutant moth known as Mothra, as well as the three-headed hydra Ghidorah, are both given time in the spotlight in the second trailer for the upcoming blockbuster. Krampus’ Michael Dougherty co-wrote the script and took over the directing reigns, in a film that looks to be even more ambitious and action-driven than the first installment.

It seems that they have stuck to the formula of filling out the cast with award-caliber actors. King of the Monsters is lead by Stranger Things’ Bobby Millie Brown and Vera Farmiga of The Conjuring fame. The supporting cast also features Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), and CCH Pounder who voice is known to superhero fans worldwide. It is worth noting that this film is the next step in Legendary’s MonsterVerse that includes Kong: Skull Island and will culminate in a showdown between the two in Godzilla vs. Kong. However, Godzilla must first prove that he is indeed a contender and the King of the Monsters before facing off with the King of Skull Island. We will find out next summer. Check out the trailer:
youtube
Official Synopsis:
Following the global success of “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse, an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Official Trailer: Marvel Studios Goes Even Bigger
The official trailer for ANT-MAN AND THE WASP is here and there’s no better time to be a Marvel fan. This past week Marvel Studios put a bow on the gift that they have been giving comic book movie fans for the past decade with their astronomically successful film, Avengers: Infinity War. The movie reset the table for their entire cinematic universe and has had fans theorizing about the myriad of possibilities for the future of the MCU characters. However, two characters that were glaringly absent from the action and drama of the latest Avengers film are Ant-Man and the Wasp.
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP is the next chapter in the MCU and the sequel to the 2015’s hit Ant-Man, starring Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, and Michael Pena. The cast is all back with Lilly’s Wasp moving into the spotlight, along with two notable veteran actors joining the cast in Laurence Fishburne and Michelle Pfeiffer.
While this is the first full official trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp, details on the film’s plot have been kept under wraps. Many have assumed that the film will be set before and possibly during the events of Infinity War, however the two film’s plots aren’t expected to have much overlap. In the trailer, we are introduced to the film’s primary villain Ghost, played by Hannah John-Kamen, as well as Sonny Burch played by Walton Goggins. Ant-Man director, Peyton Reed, is back and it seems that he is building on the comedic tone of the first one, while adding inventive layers of action using their size-changing technology.

We also know that a subplot of the movie will be to recover Hank Pym’s (Michael Douglas) wife Janet Van Dyne, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, from the Quantum Realm. Meanwhile, Fishburne has jumped DC and Warner Bros’ sinking ship and joined the Marvel cinematic universe as Pym’s colleague, Dr. Bill Foster, who developed the Giant Man tech as Goliath. Hopefully the film will feature some flashbacks of Pym and Foster in their prime, as it would be a crime to underuse the legendary acting abilities of Douglas, Pfeiffer, and Fishburne. Fortunately Marvel fans will have to wait only three short months for the next adventure, so enjoy the trailer until then!

Official Synopsis:
From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink. In the aftermath of “Captain America: Civil War,” Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.
Ant-Man and the Wasp opens on July 6th, 2018.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Trailer #2: "Perfectly Balanced As All Things Should Be"
While Black Panther has proven to be Marvel Studios’ most unanticipated blockbuster, one film that has been destined for billions at the box-office, since its inception during the mid-credits scene of The Avengers, has been Infinity War.
Black Panther leading Cap, Black Widow, Winter Soldier, M’baku, Okoye, and the Hulkbuster into battle.
The sequel is the first of its kind. It will interweave the plot lines of dozens of Marvel characters, while more superheroes will share the screen than ever before. The first trailer set the buzz in motion and for months fans have been waiting for another glimpse of the epic showdown awaiting audiences in Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel dropped the second trailer this morning and it offers a more in-depth look at the plot and challenges that the Avengers will face with the impending raid of Thanos and his army of minions.
Loki and the Children of Thanos
There are a lot of expectations for the third Avengers film, with theories ranging from the obvious with Spidey’s Iron-Spider costume to wild speculation about who will actually die during the course of the film. In fact, the new sizzle reel plays on those presumptions with Thanos’ line, “I hope they remember you.” We also get a look of the children of Thanos, who will serve as generals in his invading army. Presumably, each is tasked with retrieving an Infinity Stone and from the looks of the picture above, Loki has given them a head start by providing them with the Tesseract, aka the Mind Stone.
Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Robert Downey Jr. (Robert Downey Jr.), & Drax (Dave Bautista)
The new trailer offers interactions between Star-Lord and Iron Man, Spidey and Doctor Strange, and even a glimpse of baby Gamora. It seems that the writers along with directors Anthony and Joe Russo, have found a compelling way to incorporate all of those dynamic characters into one cohesive plot, while also providing a backstory for Thanos that they success of the film may hinge on. Are you excited yet? Well, the movie’s release date was bumped up a week and will now be in theaters in late April…so the ten year wait is nearly over. Check it out:
youtube
Official Synopsis:

A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
Avengers: Infinity War opens on April 24th, 2018.

THE GRINCH Teaser Trailer: Does The Grinch Make You Happy?

The first teaser trailer for Illumination Entertainment’s The Grinch made its debut today.
One of the Christmas season’s most recognizable faces is coming back to the big-screen in a brand new animated adaptation of Dr. Suess’ classic children’s book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The book was adapted into an animated Christmas special created by the legendary Chuck Jones in 1966 and has been a staple of the holiday season ever since.
Director Ron Howard (Solo: A Star Wars Story) adapted the story for live-action in 2000 and tapped funnyman Jim Carrey to bring the character to life, which resulted in a memorable however not quite classic experience. Now Illumination Entertainment, the company behind Minions, Despicable Me, and The Secret Life of Pets, has the rights to the property and are reinventing it for a new generation.
The new trailer features follows the Grinch as he wakes up to his alarm clock set to play Pharrell Williams 2014 hit, “Happy.” It then tracks the green curmudgeon, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, while he strolls through Whoville’s city streets and stores exhibiting trademark “Grinch” behavior. The inclusion of the pop hit song, as well as some other visual and comedic cues signal that this incarnation is meant to speak to today’s generation. However, this should be of some concern since the original is still so beloved, mainly due to its timeless qualities.
#gallery-3 margin: auto; #gallery-3 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; #gallery-3 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; #gallery-3 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The movie is set for a Winter release so there will surely be a lot more to come. While the trailer did feel contemporary, it’s possible that it’s simply due to marketing and the finished film will feel even more authentic. Not to mention, we barely get to hear Cumberbatch’s take on the character, so it will be interesting to find out more as the year rolls on. Check out the teaser trailer for The Grinch:
youtube
Official Synopsis:
Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas. Meanwhile, down in Who-ville, Cindy-Lou Who—a young girl overflowing with holiday cheer—plots with her gang of friends to trap Santa Claus as he makes his Christmas Eve rounds so that she can thank him for help for her overworked single mother. As Christmas approaches, however, her good-natured scheme threatens to collide with the Grinch’s more nefarious one. Will Cindy-Lou achieve her goal of finally meeting Santa Claus? Zorro Reboot: Kiersey Clemons Role Revealed and Story Details

One of pop culture’s most legendary crime fighters, Zorro, is preparing for a return to the big screen with Gael García Bernal and Kiersey Clemons as the leads in a brand new take on the iconic hero. The project, which has previously been known as Zorro Reborn, has changed hands and gone through several iterations in recent years, with most of the pitches centered around rebooting the property in either a contemporary or a near future setting.
youtube
The project has quietly continued development and Zorro is indeed coming back to theaters with director Jonas Cuaron at the helm and a new stylish title, Z. Recently, Screen Daily broke the news about the casting of Kiersey Clemons (Dope) in Z, in an unspecified role. She joins Bernal (Desierto) who has long been attached to the project as the lead, in what most presumed to be the role of Zorro.
When we saw the markings on the wall, we decided to dig a little deeper into the project and our sources close to the production of Z revealed some interesting information about the mysterious role that Clemons has signed on to play. She will be playing a teenager of Haitian descent, who is the female lead of the project, appearing in only a few scenes less than Bernal. However, the most interesting part of the role is that Clemons’ character names herself “Zee”, in honor of the revolutionary hero Zorro, who she grew up idolizing.
Bernal’s character is indeed the male lead, a veteran adventurer, who we could not confirm as Zorro by name. However, he will certainly be taking up the role of mentor and presumably looks to pass on the ways of the swashbuckler to the next generation. He will team up with Zee, who has proven leadership qualities, and together they will go to war with a corrupt corporation known as M-Corp.
It’s unclear if Bernal is the original Zorro in the Z timeline. However, our sources indicate that his character is known as Emiliano Garza and is not referred to as the character’s original alter-ego, Diego de la Vega. It seems that this movie might be signaling that “Zorro” is a mantle that’s handed down throughout the generations. Even more interesting, the casting of Zee seems to indicate that the actress is being positioned as the lead of the franchise by the film’s end, if solely judging by the upcoming project’s title.
Passing on the mantle of Zorro has been used in film before, probably most notably in 1998’s Mask of Zorro. In that film Anthony Hopkins’ character Don Diego de la Vega trains the drunken Alejandro Murrieta, played by Antonio Banderas, into the next generation’s “Zorro.” So there’s certainly a precedent for the narrative device in Zorro lore. Regardless, it seems that the new take on the character will be a progressive take on the iconic hero who fought for the disenfranchised and underrepresented. We will be sure to bring you more on the swashbuckler as more details emerge.
Z does not have a set release date.

Academy Award Predictions: A Geeks' Guide to the Oscars

The Point of Geeks’ guide you through the 2018 Oscars and predict who they think will win in this year’s 90th Academy Awards show.
For decades, there has been a hidden conflict between the common moviegoer’s taste and the films that are annually recognized at the Academy Awards. Box-office blockbusters regularly get overlooked for smaller indie dramas, which has led many to feel that the ceremony is simply a self-congratulatory effort by the film elite. (Spoiler alert: It kind of is…)
There have been endless theories about the disparity between the two sides of movie fandom. Many have concluded that it’s the average age of the Academy voters, which stands at a ripe 67 years old, to blame. However, the generation that grew up on Steven Spielberg and the Marvel cinematic universe is coming into power in the film industry and we just might be seeing the beginning of a new era.
Ten years ago, the combination of a legendary performance and an untimely death resulting Heath Ledger’s posthumous Academy Award win for The Dark Knight. This has served as a crack of light for Geeks, signaling that things were indeed changing. However, in that same ceremony, the largest and most infamous snub of that year was The Dark Knight’s absence from the Best Picture category. The outrage led to the Academy increasing the total number of Best Picture nominations to a maximum of ten votes.
Last year was defined by the #OscarsSoWhite campaign that began as a rally cry to bring attention to the habitual lack of African-American nominations in the ceremony over the years. The movement brought attention to the nominating process, that proved to have racial and cultural biases ingrained in the institution. This led to several changes that have increased the diversity of the nominees and made an important step towards a more colorful and diverse show this year.
The nominations are in for this year’s Oscars and with this year’s 90th Academy Awards ceremony only days away, the anticipation is becoming palpable. We have sat through dozens of movies this year, as well as studied the odds for all the categories and it’s looking like it will be a show full of surprises. Below we break down our predictions for who we think will win. We also throw in our “Spoilers” pick, which indicates who we think has the best chance to upset the category. So, make sure to bring this guide with you when you watch the show this Sunday and enjoy!
*****
BEST PICTURE
“Call Me by Your Name”
“Darkest Hour”
“Dunkirk”
“Get Out”
“Lady Bird”
“Phantom Thread”
“The Post”
“The Shape of Water”
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
The Point of Geeks’ Pick: Up to ten films can get a nomination in this category and it’s hard to overlook the absence of Logan. However, despite that expected slight from the the Academy, it’s clear that this is the year of Del Toro. The Shape of Water has the perfect combination of drama, horror, science-fiction, and fantasy to appease all voters. It seems that this is the perfect compromise for Best Picture to a film that’s well deserving.
Spoilers: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Sally Hawkins, “The Shape of Water”
Frances McDormand, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Margot Robbie, “I, Tonya”
Saoirse Ronan, “Lady Bird”
Meryl Streep, “The Post”
The PoG: While it’s nice to see fresh talent on the board, like Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan, it will ultimately be a veteran who has been to the dance before. However, don’t expect Meryl to be taking home the trophy. Three Billboards struck the right nerve at the right time and the PoG foresees Frances McDormand walking away with her second Oscar. The runner-up is Sally Hawkins, who gave a powerfully silent performance in The Shape of Water and has the force of the Del Toro project behind her.
Spoilers: Sally Hawkins
ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Timothée Chalamet, “Call Me By Your Name”
Daniel Day-Lewis, “Phantom Thread”
Daniel Kaluuya, “Get Out”
Gary Oldman, “Darkest Hour”
Denzel Washington, “Roman J. Israel, Esq.”
The PoG: It’s always refreshing when a fresh face is introduced in this category and with the blockbuster release of Black Panther, it’s good to be Daniel Kaluuya nowadays. However, the newcomer has no shot as it seems that it’s finally Gary Oldman’s time to take home the Best Actor award. His performance as Winston Churchill practically frames the leader as a superhero and after a long career of exceptional performances, Oldman will finally step on to the big stage.
Spoilers: Timothée Chalamet
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Mary J. Blige, “Mudbound”
Allison Janney, “I, Tonya”
Lesley Manville, “Phantom Thread”
Laurie Metcalf, “Lady Bird”
Octavia Spencer, “The Shape of Water”
The PoG: I still can’t process that Mary J. “Real Love” Blidge got nominated…but I digress. This is a competitive field that seemingly will come down to a cage match between Allison Janney and Laurie Metcalf. However, my gut is telling me that Janney will walk away with the gold, only because it’s the exact overbearing mother performance that the Academy…well…can relate to.
Spoilers: Laurie Metcalf
ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Willem Dafoe, “The Florida Project”
Woody Harrelson, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Richard Jenkins, “The Shape of Water”
Christopher Plummer, “All the Money in the World”
Sam Rockwell, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
The PoG: There is way too much controversy and scrutiny for Plummer to shuffle on stage for All the Money in the World. Not enough attention has been paid to The Florida Project to give Dafoe a fighting chance at a win, while Jenkins had a solid, yet ultimately forgettable role in The Shape of Water. So it will be Harrelson facing off against Rockwell for supporting superiority over Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and if other award shows are accurate, it will be Rockwell’s time to deliver a speech.
Spoilers: Woody Harrelson
DIRECTOR
Christopher Nolan, “Dunkirk”
Jordan Peele, “Get Out”
Greta Gerwig, “Lady Bird”
Paul Thomas Anderson “Phantom Thread”
Guillermo del Toro, “The Shape of Water”
The PoG: While Get Out was one of the best films of the year, it seems that Peele still has more dues to pay before he can expect a trophy. However, it is a win just to be invited to the ceremony along with other relative newcomer Greta Gerwig, who has a legitimate chance of winning herself. However, at the end of the day, when you whittle the list down it’s clear that Guillermo del Toro and The Shape of Water will be walking away with the trophy at the end of the night.
Spoilers: Jordan Peele
ORIGINAL SONG
“Mighty River,” “Mudbound”
“Mystery of Love,” “Call Me by Your Name”
“Remember Me,” “Coco”
“Stand Up For Something,” “Marshall”
“This is Me,” “Greatest Showman”
The PoG: The Academy loves to reward musicals, so it would seem that Greatest Showman’s “This is Me” is the type of song born for the award show, despite the film’s more glaring issues. Anyone that saw Coco knows how powerful “Remember Me” both emotionally and narratively to the film. This is almost a flip of the coin scenario, but the push will probably go to “This is Me.”
Spoilers: “Remember Me”
ORIGINAL SCORE
“Dunkirk”
“Phantom Thread”
“The Shape of Water”
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
The PoG: John Williams is always a good bet, but expect there to be a small measure of Star Wars fatigue to hold it back. The absence of score is what helps to create the atmosphere in Dunkirk, so it might not be Hans Zimmer’s year either. Expect Alexandre Desplat, an Academy darling, to walk away with the Oscar, adding to The Shape of Water’s trophy case.
Spoilers: “Phantom Thread”
ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
“The Boss Baby”
“The Breadwinner”
“Coco”
“Ferdinand”
“Loving Vincent”
The PoG: This category should be easy to call, however the Academy has surprised us before. Coco wasn’t just the best animated films of the year hands down, it was legitimately robbed of the chance to compete for the Best Picture category. It’s that powerful, additionally the celebration and exploration of Mexican culture is the exact antidote to the xenophobic cloud in the real world.
Spoilers: “The Breadwinner”
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
“Call Me by Your Name”
“The Disaster Artist”
“Logan”
“Molly’s Game”
“Mudbound”
The PoG: This one is a tight race and when that happens, you should always lean into the sentimental pick. James Ivory is the inspiring type of winner the Academy loves to see on stage and the 89 year-old writer is a gif waiting to happen, so it’s hard to imagine them passing on the opportunity to hand him the Oscar for Call Me by Your Name. But dang it, how great for geek culture would it be if Logan could somehow pull out the win.
Spoilers: “Logan”
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
“The Big Sick”
“Get Out”
“Lady Bird”
“The Shape of Water”
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
The PoG: This is another intense category that could go many different directions. However, the beneficiary of the competition may well end up being Jordan Peele for Get Out. It is an original story and idea that stands apart from the pack and this could be the category to make the film an Academy Award winner.
Spoilers: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
PRODUCTION DESIGN
“Beauty and the Beast”
“Blade Runner 2049”
“Darkest Hour”
“Dunkirk”
“The Shape of Water”
The PoG: It’s hard to ignore the elaborate production designs found in Beauty and the Beast and Blade Runner 2049. If I had a vote it would have to go to one of the aforementioned films, however this in the year of The Shape of Water.
Spoilers: “Blade Runner 2049”
CINEMATOGRAPHY
“Blade Runner 2049”
“Darkest Hour”
“Dunkirk”
“Mudbound”
“The Shape of Water”
The PoG: If I was on autopilot I would select The Shape of Water. However, this is a category where the Geeks will rule for a brief moment. Blade Runner 2049 has had an underwhelming audience response to a wildly ambitious movie. Which ironically followed in the footsteps of the original, where it gained “classic” status years after its release. Roger Deakins has been nominated over a dozen times in the past and has contributed decades of acclaimed work in the industry, so this seems like the perfect opportunity to reward the visionary cinematographer.
Spoilers: “The Shape of Water”
COSTUME DESIGN
“Beauty and the Beast”
“Darkest Hour”
“Phantom Thread”
“The Shape of Water”
“Victoria and Abdul”
The PoG: Typically this is a tough category to parse. However, it’s hard to imagine Phantom Thread being shut out of the ceremony. The movie is set against the backdrop of the fashion industry and the costume design reflected the setting, so expect it to win. However, he marketing machine at Disney has been in overdrive and it’s not hard to imagine them getting the attention of a few voters who have a sentimental attachment to Beauty and the Beast.
Spoilers: “Beauty and the Beast”
SOUND EDITING
“Baby Driver”
“Blade Runner 2049”
“Dunkirk”
“The Shape of Water”
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”
The PoG: Baby Driver is essentially a feature film length music video, so the marriage between visuals and sound is paramount. Dunkirk could easily win this category, but it might be time for the work of Edgar Wright to get more respect.
Spoilers: “Dunkirk”
SOUND MIXING
“Baby Driver”
“Blade Runner 2049”
“Dunkirk”
“The Shape of Water”
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”
The PoG: While the visuals were stunning, it was the sounds of war that brought Dunkirk to life. The realistic whipping of bullets, the spinning of airplane propellers, and the concussive explosions were almost a character all on its own.
Spoilers: “Baby Driver”
FILM EDITING
“Baby Driver”
“Dunkirk”
“I, Tonya”
“The Shape of Water”
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
The PoG: This is another area where Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk shines through. The cross-cutting found in the movie is exceptional. While the entire film’s run being set against the ticking of bomb is old-school filmmaking at its finest and the exact type of ambition that should be rewarded.
Spoilers: “Baby Driver”
MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING
“Darkest Hour”
“Victoria and Abdul”
“Wonder”
The PoG: Last year this unlikely category was a highlight for the Geek world after Suicide Squad was the unexpected winner. This year the winner should be relatively straight forward. The makeup job on Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour is flawless and a throwback to when makeup truly mattered in the film industry.
Spoilers: “Victoria and Abdul”
VISUAL EFFECTS
“Blade Runner 2049”
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”
“Kong: Skull Island”
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”
“War for the Planet of the Apes”
The PoG: Interestingly enough, this category is almost as important as the Best Picture to the Point of Geeks. After all, if there weren’t new revolutionary techniques in visual effects, we could never get the type of stories on screen that we long for. With all that said, if they aren’t going to give Andy Serkis an acting nod for his performance of Caesar in the reboot trilogy of Planet of the Apes, this seems like a prime opportunity to award the VFX breakthroughs that were accomplished over the course of the series.
Spoilers: “Blade Runner 2049”

New Post has been published on https://www.pointofgeeks.com/box-office-report-black-panther-king-of-hollywood/
BOX OFFICE REPORT - BLACK PANTHER is King of Hollywood with $111 Million Second Weekend

The box-office results are in and Black Panther’s monumental $202 million dollar opening has proven to be as sturdy as the Vibranium metal that powers the fictional land of Wakanda. The debut was the fifth largest opening ever and Marvel Studios’ runaway hit fell only 44% in its second week of release by hauling in a jaw-dropping $111.6 million dollars this past weekend. Which is the fourth time in movie history that a film has grossed over $100 million dollars in its second weekend of release.
In only its second week of release, it’s already time to start projecting where Black Panther will fall in the pantheon of box-office greats. The film has already grossed over $700 million dollars worldwide, while still not opening in all of its Asian territories, so a billion dollar gross is inevitable. The movie is only a day away from becoming the highest grossing solo comic book film domestically and falling into third place behind the two Avengers films. Now it’s worth watching if Black Panther can beat The Avengers’ $1.5 million worldwide gross and become the highest grossing superhero film ever. We will all be watching.
A couple of films hoped to provide counterprogramming to the Marvel film, however it’s unclear if facing off against the Marvel juggernaut was a wise move. Game Night was the new comedic offering for the weekend and had an estimated $17 million dollar opening. However, the film starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams has the chance to have legs as the weeks role on. Game Night is bolstered by solid reviews and strong audience reactions, which may help the movie continue selling tickets over the long haul.
Third place belonged to Peter Rabbit, which grossed an estimated $12.7 million dollars in its third week of release at the box-office. The family film has been a quiet success by grossing over $71 million dollars and already surpassing its production budget. It seems that Sony has a Paddington-like hit on their hands and things should only improve when the movie hits home theaters.
The other major release was Alex Garland’s Annihilation, which stars Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, and Gina Rodriguez. The science-fiction thriller had an estimated $11 million dollar opening which qualified it for a fourth place debut. Which is surely disappointing to Sony Pictures, particularly since the movie has been getting stellar reviews. The film also stretched industry norms by being released internationally on Netflix. Garland’s other sci-fi hit, Ex Machina, was propelled by award consideration and it will be interesting to see if that success can be replicated.
Rounding out the top five spots was Fifty Shades Freed, which made an estimated $7.1 million dollars in its third week of release. The movie has grossed over $89 million dollars domestically and signals that the franchise is in a downward trend. However, with an announced production budget of $50 million dollars, it’s probable that there is more to come.
Check out the complete Box-Office Report for the weekend of February 23rd-25th, 2018.

New Post has been published on https://www.pointofgeeks.com/bartlett-tv-show-anthony-veneziale-interview/
EXCLUSIVE: Anthony Veneziale Talks BARTLETT, Freestyle Love Supreme, and the Seeds of HAMILTON

Actor and producer Anthony Veneziale sits down with the Point of Geeks to discuss his new show, Bartlett, his past with Freestyle Love Supreme, diversity in the entertainment industry, the influence of hip-hop, the beginnings of Hamilton, and his work on PBS’ The Electric Company.
Veneziale has appeared in shows such as Sex in the City, SanFranLand, and most notably he’s one of the founders of Freestyle Love Supreme, an interactive stage show that featured future Hamilton stars Lin-Manuel Miranda and Daveed Diggs. The actor’s latest project is the 6-episode streaming series Bartlett, also starring Chrissy Mazzeo (SanFranLand), Don Reed (A Different World), Utkarsh Ambudkar (The Mindy Project), and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton).
Bartlett follows hapless ad executive Roger Newhouse (Anthony Veneziale), whose life has been on a downward trend. Roger must save his career over a course of a day after his business partner and ex-girlfriend has left him high and dry before a life-changing pitch. However, there is another problem…all Roger want to do is make music. The show is a situational comedy, with full musical segments that bring to life Roger’s dreams and imaginations.
We were lucky enough to sit down and chat with Bartlett star Anthony Veneziale about his upcoming show. Check out the trailer and interview below!

*****
Point of Geeks: Congrats on the new series airing. How does it feel to finally get it on the air, especially considering you are both (lead) actor and an executive?
Anthony Veneziale: Ah man. Are you kidding me? It’s the best feeling! Like when you have been working on something for so long and you can finally say to people, ‘You can see it here.’ There is like nothing better in the entertainment industry than to be able to do that.
PoG: You have a background performing live, with Freestyle Love Supreme. Tell me a little about that part of your life and how you got here.
Anthony Veneziale: I think that almost everything that I do, even to this day, is somehow rooted in a lot of the things that I learned from Freestyle Love Supreme. And that crew is just this crazy, insane, supergroup. Like soon I think that we will get to the point where people will be like, ‘I didn’t realize everyone was in the Wu-Tang Clan.’
The names are just insane. The stuff that we did in the early days, I think, is still very much a part of all of us. So Lin-Manuel Miranda, we used to do – in Freestyle Love Supreme – this game where we would ask the audience for a decade. Any decade throughout time. And then, we would do a rap musical about the decade, for the audience, based off what they asked for. I don’t think that’s a coincidence what came out of that was Chris Jackson’s love of history, him recommending the book to Lin, and then Lin reading Hamilton, and then that being like that was totally natural for us to this point of view around this thing.
youtube
PoG: Going off on a little tangent. What do you think about the state of Hip-Hop? Freestyle has become a lost part of the artform. What happened?
Anthony Veneziale: I think that the prosecution is leading the witness. But I do think it’s easy to say ‘Gosh it isn’t like it used to be.’ And there’s something about “nostalgia” that you can paint the past with. But with that said…
I obviously cut my teeth with 90’s hip-hop… It’s going to be really difficult to top… Wu Tang’s 36 Chambers, A Tribe Called Quest with Midnight Marauders. All of these crazy things. Everything kind of happened right then. A lot of people say that was the pinnacle of hip-hop and now we are kind of on the downside of it. But with that said, I think that there is more choice now. A lot more perspective being brought into hip-hop.
I take a page out of Daveed [Diggs] book, which is hip-hop really came out of disenfranchisement and so while you get some you are getting some of the views that aren’t necessarily the disenfranchised voice, you are getting…it’s getting watered down because there are so many different perspectives and when something cuts through though and grinds on that gear and elevates the whole genre…Let’s use Hamilton for an example. I think hip-hop musicals are going to become much more of the groundbreaking part of hip-hop going forward. Then just releasing a commercially successful song. Because let’s be honest. It’s been commodified. It’s been commercialized. Now people understand they can use it in this way and make money off of it. Just my opinion.
PoG: Kind on that same track. Bartlett seems like the perfect synthesis of your past experiences. You have romantic comedy past, Sex and the City, and of course with Freestyle Love Supreme and the musical bits on the show. How did that come together for you with this project? Were you there from the inception? Because it seems so crafted for your own talents.
Anthony Veneziale: Haha. It’s one of those chicken and the egg type questions. And that’s me quoting Flight of the Conchords, apologies. So you know Martin Edwards (All The Wrong Places) wrote this a long time ago and showed me a draft of it. It was something that was going to be done in a theater. And when he showed it to me I thought, ‘Oh wow. This about a lot of white dudes feeling sorry for themself.’ Because it was set in an agency and it was mostly about Roger and a whole bunch of other white people who were like ‘My life is so hard. I want something else.’ So I said I wasn’t interested and then they finished doing the play. And it went pretty well and it was a good show. There was some fun stuff in it! But it’s not stuff that I’m drawn to.
Whether it’s Freestyle Love Supreme or The Electric Company which I helped re-launch. Multiple points of view are things that I value in art. It’s what I’m always looking for and so when Chrissy [Mazzeo] suggested to Martin that they open it up and make it into a web series. I said, ‘That sounds interesting. That sounds cool. But can we do this, this, and this. Can we have a lot more people of color in it? Yes it might be Roger’s point of view but it really should be addressing the topic of sexuality in the workplace. In some light way sort of dismantling the patriarchy, because it serves none of us. And how can we do that in way that’s really fun.
So at a certain point I said to Martin. What if we make this about a guy that wants to become a musician, instead of a director or something like that. And I can put a lot of original music in there and I can write an original song. I started taking guitar lessons 3 or 4 years ago and I just got so into it. It felt like I should be using this. It was like a new shiny toy. ‘Let me write songs…please!!! And he was like ‘Okay cool. Let’s see what it’s like.’ We would workshop. Do a lot of improv stuff, work scenes. Chrissy and I would work on stuff that Martin wrote. And Martin was always super collaborative and so was Chrissy, so I think that’s what at the heart what made the project really hum and go.
PoG: As far as the musical segments, how long did it take for you to craft them? How did that process go?
Anthony Veneziale: Love the question. Because it’s one of my favorite things. Which is like…how do you make a song? So luckily with this we kind of knew the segments when would be nicefor a breakout moment. We kind of knew what we were trying to accomplish. And for me, I try to find that “feeling word.” The word that encapsulates what we are trying to say. And this all comes out of my freestyle training. I use that word as the pulse…
vimeo
The words itself lead me to the pulse. And then from there I get a rhythm that I play over top of it and kind of let that word dissolve away, but it will give that initial beat. Something needs to be the seed and for me it’s the pulse of that beat. And then I will kind of fiddle around on the guitar and try to find the chords that will help to illuminate that concept. I have a little of music theory in my background, so I kind of understand what I’m trying to accomplish when I put together either the riff of the song or a minor resolution or whatever it might be. And then from there I just let it live for awhile. Like the actual melody and song. And then I will start putting words to it and I will just freestyle. I will just sort of make it up and let it happen. And record a bunch of different versions and whittle down until I get the things that I feel like get to the heart of it.
And then by iteration 10 or 12, I’m ready to share it with Martin or… Oh yeah, Bill Sherman who was also big part of Freestyle Love Supreme and is the musical director for Sesame Street, I share it with him, Joel, and Julien who was our musical director on this, And get their feedback and keep reiterating and til it was there. And then it has to have these visual components to it. And this comes for a little bit from my copywriting days where I would do songs for Nickelodeon or whoever it might have been. And you kind of want to make sure that you leaves these options around the visual, so you can make a reference to a thing but it makes a lot sense when you resolve it with the visual on-screen.
PoG: The show essentially takes place over the course of one day, aside from flashbacks. which is a really fun narrative device. If you are lucky enough for a second season do you plan on using the same type of device where it takes place over a day or week? Have you thought about the second season?
Anthony Veneziale: Great question. From a producer’s standpoint, we would love to have another season, we have been (sort of) talking about it a bunch. And it seems like it would be a year later and it would still take place during a day. But it would be a different character’s point of view. So probably [Maggie’s] point of view. What’s Maggie going through? What is she dealing with a little more? I think in the first season we were really kind of teeing up this concept of ‘hey what if we don’t abide by societal norms about X, Y, and Z?’ And now for season two, it’s what if we don’t abide by the business norms of X, Y, and Z. And even break free further out of the concept of what women’s roles are and what they have traditionally been and how can we shape it to the world that we want to be living in.
PoG: I like how the show’s focus is on the comedy, but it has a social conscious. It touches on issues of gender, workplace romance, race, sexuality, it’s all there…yet it’s not on the surface. How were you able to layer it so deftly into the writing and performances? It seems like a really important time, even if it’s comedy, for it to have a viewpoint on the world.
Anthony Veneziale: I agree with you wholeheartedly. I think it has to do with the people who are creating it needing to have a shared vision, that they put on the table and they demand to be included in the medium. I think the “Woke” community need to make whatever they are making in a way that includes as many voices as possible and also opens the table for new voices. That’s a very conscious effort that you have to make around that. And that includes casting, to crewing, to how the story gets created, and that’s something that I’m super proud of on this project. We really kept an eye on and worked really hard and had very high standards for each other. And had people talented and visionary enough to make sure that we met those standards. So Chrissy Mazzeo and Rivkah Beth Medow were really the Atlases that held the globe of Bartlett on their shoulders and created a beautiful set and we had 50-60% women in every department across the crew, in the cast, and in the creation. And that to me is the way you do it!
PoG: Bartlett seems to be speaking to two groups of people generally. Millenials that have been accustomed to a faster pace of different employment opportunities and pursuing their dreams more, due to the state of the world today. And also middle-aged people who are also experiencing workplace changes as well. What do you think that show has to say about both groups?
Anthony Veneziale: That’s really cool. I think that they have so much more in common then they are aware. Ultimately I think Millenials are more impowered by the concept of doing something that they love, opposed to doing something so they can afford to live. And I think that for the other generation I think that they have come to that [same] realization just a touch later. So sometimes there’s even a feeling of resentment towards Millenials. Like, ‘Uh, how did they get so empowered. How are they able to ask for exactly what they want.’ (laughs)
But at the end of the day, for both, that you are doing a thing that when you wake up in the morning you feel like it matters to you. You are doing something that you are willing to go whatever extra mile to get done. And that was really true for us on Bartlett. Because all of us are parents. And all of us have other jobby jobs and performance gigs. And we said, ‘Okay bring the kids to set.’ This is a family gig. We get it. And we would work around that. I would leave set around 3 everyday and go pick my daughter up from school, drop her off at home and come back to do more shooting at night. And if you aren’t able to look in the mirror and say what you do matters [to you] you might want to be able to find the thing that does. And it’s easy to say it and hard to do it and I have tons of empathy.
PoG: You mentioned it in passing. You were involved in the relaunch of The Electric Company on PBS. What can you tell me about that?
Anthony Veneziale: Absolutely. Like most things in my life it came out of the seed of Freestyle Love Supreme. We were doing a off-Broadway run at this beautiful theater called the Ars Nova which is on 54th Street and they just expanded to a new theater down at the Greenwich House, but they will still have the 54th St. theater. We were doing a run there and a friend of the show knew that The Electric Company and some of the people around Sesame Workshop were looking for inspiration around relaunching The Electric Company and this was very early and just throwing some concepts around. And they brought the main creators to our show and afterwards they were like ‘This is what our show is. You doing what you just did up there for Freestyle Love Supreme is exactly the findings that we have around a lot of educational outreach that makes sense for kids to want to learn how to codify language.
So hip-hop, in essence, is this beautiful way to word-chunk. Find chunks of words that have similarities that then make you in your brain say ‘Oh, so these things are like these things.’ And that’s exactly how hip-hop works. And that’s exactly how the human brain that’s developing to learn language actually works. It doesn’t work by memorizing every letter and lining up all the letters. We kind of threw that out the window a long time ago. It’s by codefying. It’s seeing “EE” together and understanding that it sounds like this and “CH” together. And if that isn’t what hip-hop is, right?!? That’s exactly what you are doing, you are grabbing onto those word chunks. And so we started working with them and I had been a teacher for a long time, wo we sort of built out this understanding very early on that this would be the perfect tool to use in this fun way for disenfranchised readers. So kids that don’t see themselves as having the ability or access to reading.
It was super cool. And obviously the original series was a big influence on all of us who were working on it. And we also didn’t want to screw it up. So there was something in the room where we were like ‘this has better be good because the bar is super high.’
PoG: Talk about life coming full circle!
Anthony Veneziale: Totally! Totally!

JESSICA JONES Season 2 Trailers: Krysten Ritter is Back to Drink Whiskey and Punch Faces

Marvel and Netflix are back with a brand new trailer for the second season of Jessica Jones.
Marvel Studios have dominated the film industry for the past decade and in recent years have begun to expand their reach into the world of television. One of their more successful ventures has been their partnership with Netflix. The streaming service is home to the darker side of the Marvel cinematic universe, with a string of hit shows including Daredevil, Luke Cage, and The Punisher.
One of the studio’s more unique properties is Jessica Jones. The show’s first season featured an unforgiving protagonist whose internal demons were just as terrifying as the monsters walking the streets of New York. The first season saw the introduction of Luke Cage and her former lover, Kilgrave. Kilgrave’s powers of persuasion set the tone for the series and allowed for a Marvel show that explored emotional abuse in ways that have not been attempted in the medium. Check out the first official trailer:
youtube
The newest trailer is crafted for those who may have missed or forgotten the events of the first season. It’s clear that while this is a new season, those moments of trauma and heroism have stayed with the New York City Defender and will continue to define her character. While the first season set the stage, it looks like Jones will be exploring her own origin and history in season number 2.
Breaking Bad’s Krysten Ritter burst onto the scene with her portrayal of Jones, in both Jessica Jones and The Defenders, imbuing her with a sarcastic wit and “charm” that quickly made her a fan favorite. While it looks like we can expect more action in the upcoming season, Jones will continue to be pushed out of her comfort zone, both physically and emotionally. In case you missed it before, here is the initial trailer for Jessica Jones also. Enjoy!
youtube
Official Synopsis:
Jessica Jones is a hard-drinking, short-fuse, mess of a woman who is just trying to make a living as a Private Investigator in New York City. She’s super strong but is haunted by a dark past that keeps her from truly becoming a hero.
The second season for Jessica Jones will be available on Netflix on March 8th, 2018.

INCREDIBLES 2 Olympics Sneak Peek Trailer: Stay-At-Home Superhero

Disney/Pixar has released a brand new trailer for Incredibles 2 in conjunction with the Winter Olympic Games.
The news of Disney’s attempt to purchase 20th Century Fox sent the geek world into a frenzy last year. While there are numerous ways that the acquisition may play out, most geeks are energized by the chance for the Fantastic Four to be rebooted under the watchful eye of Marvel Studios. There have been multiple failed attempts to bring the Marvel’s first family to live-action, however the most faithful “adaptation” of the “Fantastic Four” is unanimously known by the name, The Incredibles.
Pixar’s first family is back with their first sequel after the mega-success of the 2004’s The Incredibles, which grossed over $600 million dollars and is near the top of every critics list of best Pixar releases. The original saw the Bob Parr (Craig T. Nelson), a retired superhero, pull himself out of retirement and his super-powered family into an adventure to save the world. In the sequel, his wife Helen (Holly Hunter) has taken over the role as primary vigilante and Bob is now a stay-at-home superhero and dad to this three children, Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack. In the sequel, a new menace emerges that urges the family to come together and fight off evil once again with the help of Bob’s best friend Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson).

Last year Pixar released the first teaser trailer for Incredibles 2, which featured only Bob and Jack-Jack. The short clip showed off the toddler’s unpredictable powers that will surely be used for maximum comedic effect in the follow-up. This newest trailer is yet another reminder of the embarrassment of riches that will be found at the theaters this summer. Check it out!

Official Synopsis:
In “Incredibles 2,” Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose superpowers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.
Incredibles 2 opens on June 15th, 2018.

CTMUS: How STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Should Have Ended

HISHE is back again with another hilarious parody in this latest installment of Clips That Make Us Smile. This time they create an animated satire based on Star Wars: The Last Jedi and give their take on How Star Wars: The Last Jedi Should Have Ended.
The latest chapter in the Star Wars saga is the most controversial chapter in the new series, dividing fans, critics, and purists, into competing camps of discourse, praise, and disappointment. Most of the controversy and discord comes from the daring story decisions that director and writer Rian Johnson chose for the characters that were established in The Force Awakens.
Director J.J. Abrams left huge plot strands to be addressed in future installments, including the secret of Rey’s lineage, Luke’s reunion with his father’s iconic lightsaber, and the identity of Snoke. Johnson chose to either downplay those elements or not address them at all, which did not sit well with rabid fans. Many of whom had spent the previous 24 months feverishly creating timelines, fan fiction, and theories, for the answers to these questions.
In the new episode of How It Should Have Ended, the HISHE team addresses all of the burning issues and offers their take for how the story should have been shaped. Many of these solutions are comedic, however for the most part, they are all story decisions that would have played well both with audiences and thematically. How cool would it have been if it was Admiral Ackbar that saved the rebellion? Or what if Rey joined Luke on the battlefield? While almost all of the takes are laugh-out-loud hilarious, they do serve as a drawing board for other possibilities. Check it out!

Joaquin Phoenix in Talks to Play The Joker in 1980's Era Origin Film

Actor Joaquin Phoenix has reportedly agreed to star as the Joker in Todd Phillips’ directed and Martin Scorsese produced origin story. Just when you thought that DC Films had jumped off of the rails following the massive failure of Justice League. There are at least a dozen films based on their DC Comics’ library in various levels of production as you read this, with Aquaman slated for a December release, Shazam currently filming, and Wonder Woman 2 ramping up to go in front of cameras later this year. However, that is truly only the tip of the iceberg.
Last year, we reported on a project that sounded too wild to be true. The Hangover’s Todd Phillips was co-writing an origin film based on The Joker’s rise to prominence in the criminal underworld during the 1980’s and none other than Martin Scorsese would be producing the project. The upcoming film is reportedly inspired by the crime films of Scorsese’s past, with the world of Gotham City feeling familiar to fans of Mean Streets or Taxi Driver.
It had been previously reported that the studio was in heavy pursuit of frequent Scorsese collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio for the lead role of the Joker. However, this morning Variety changed the entire conversation with the revelation that Joaquin Phoenix (Inherent Vice) has agreed to take on the role of the Clown Prince of Crime in the upcoming film.
While studio negotiations are not yet underway, Phillips has made it clear that Phoenix is the top choice to star and sources now tell Variety that, after thinking it over, Phoenix has agreed to the role. WB had no comment.
Phillips is on board to co-write and direct the movie. Phillips had met with Phoenix before the new year and was just waiting for the studio’s go-ahead, sources say.
Insiders stress that Jared Leto, who starred in “Suicide Squad” as the Joker is still on board as the character in the DC universe and that this Phoenix has no effect on what happens with Leto’s character in future DC films.
The upcoming origin film is intended to be a standalone installment in the DC Films’ library. So, Jared Leto is expected to reprise his role as the Joker in Suicide Squad 2, while Phoenix’s take will serve as an Elseworld story. WB has the intention of creating a separate production banner that will house DC Comics’ adaptations, that don’t fit into the larger tone or narrative of the overall DCU, while presumably being an umbrella for more adult takes on their comic characters. Fox Studios has already proven the economic potential of making R-rated or more adult fare, with the blockbuster success of Deadpool and the Academy Award nominated Logan. Sony has followed suit as well with their upcoming release of Venom. So, it’s clear that the industry is changing and WB is following the tide.
Phoenix made his name with serious dramas and arthouse releases, however this is far from his first tango with the comic book genre. The actor was reportedly pursued heavily for the role of Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, he came even closer to superhero stardom when he was allegedly cast as Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange. The actor pulled out at the last moment clearing the way for Benedict Cumberbatch, which led many to believe he would never participate in the genre.
However, upon closer inspection, both of the previously mentioned roles involved multi-picture deals that would contractually obligate the actor to return in projects that wouldn’t necessarily inspire him creatively. The upcoming Joker spin-off movie is intended as a standalone story, which would not obligate the actor to sign on for future sequels. Throw in the unique opportunity to collaborate with Martin Scorsese and it’s makes sense why Phoenix is circling the project. This is also a good indication that the script, or at least story, is truly a creative work. This potential casting creates more questions than answers and we can’t wait to find out more about this project in the near future.
There is not a release date set currently for the upcoming Joker origin film.

VENOM Teaser Trailer: Everything But Venom

The time is now for Sony Pictures as they debut the first announcement trailer for Venom starring Tom Hardy.
youtube
Sony’s burgeoning “Spider-Verse” was once thought to be a misguided attempt to mimic Marvel Studios’ cinematic universe. However, after the vibrant teaser for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and our first look at Venom, it seems that there is more than enough material to support the series of Spider-Man spin-off projects in the near future. More importantly, it appears that the studio is willing to take chances with these ancillary projects, like the upcoming Silver and Black.
Venom got a headstart with the miraculous casting of Hardy in the lead role of Eddie Brock, which is a nod to film enthusiasts that this will not be a cartoony adaptation of the Marvel Comics’ character. This notion was confirmed with the addition of Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams (Manchester By the Sea) as Brock’s love interest Anne Weying, along with standout Riz Ahmed (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as the Life Foundation’s Dr. Carlton Drake.
Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer is at the helm, who seems to have the range needed to adapt one of Marvel’s most terrifying characters. Tone will be the key to the movie’s success which has the potential to be an R-rated horror-thriller that the superhero genre hasn’t done justice to…yet. With Fox’s New Mutants getting pushed until next year, Venom has a chance to set the trend this Fall.
This morning we got our first look at the upcoming adaptation which establishes the vibe, which is being sold as a science-fiction drama and holding back on the comic book elements. While the lack of a reveal of Venom may be disappointing to many, the teaser does effectively establish the Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde duality that Hardy will be bringing to life. If you keep your eyes peeled and are a fan of the “Lethal Protector” and “Agent Venom” storylines, you can catch the nefarious Life Foundation and the actual space goo that will ultimately bond with Brock. With a long eight months to go until the movie’s release, we are sure to get a lot more in the near future. Go ahead and check out the international version below.

BLACK PANTHER Final Trailer: Most Advanced Ticket Sales in MCU History...the Hype is Real

For the past two years, if you came across Black Panther on social media it was hard to overlook the hashtag #BlackPantherSoLit. What started as a calling card that signified African-Americans’ growing excitement for first large-scale production featuring a black superhero in the lead, has now clearly spread across all cultural lines.
It seems that there is a perfect storm brewing for the film, with Black Panther having a totally new world to be explored with the fictional African country of Wakanda. While there also seems to be perfectly selected talent both in front and behind the camera. Director Ryan Coogler’s (Creed) upcoming adaptation of the Marvel Comics’ character stars Chadwick Boseman (Captain America: Civil War), Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis, Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, and many more.
However, the undeniable hype was measured in dollars earlier this past Monday, when tickets went on sale and in the first 24 hours Black Panther sold more tickets than Captain America: Civil War, the previous record holder. Erik Davis of Fandango immiediately took note of the accomplishment and posted this to Twitter:
Big news this morning – #BlackPanther sold more advance tickets on @Fandango in its first 24 hours than any other MCU movie, besting previous record holder Captain America: Civil War. Long live the King! pic.twitter.com/JL1c28AgWm
— ErikDavis (@ErikDavis) January 10, 2018
Captain America: Civil War opened in May, when action tentpoles traditionally make huge numbers, plus the film was essentially a sequel to the Avengers franchise. While Black Panther is opening over the February holiday weekend and is merely the second appearance of the character and the first for his world of supporting characters. However, Deadpool proved to have a $132 million dollar opening over the same Valentine Day’s weekend two years ago, which is an indication that the release slot may not have maxed out its potential. For a movie that took decades to make, this is certainly an unexpected, yet welcome change of fortune for the character.
One of the biggest surprises in recent weeks was the announcement of Kendrick Lamar joining the film to compose the film’s soundtrack. The hip-hop artist may be on top of his industry and has crafted a reputation as a gifted, if not futuristic, rapper who combines street sensibilities with progressive and pro-Black undertones. Lamar seems uniquely positioned to create the sonic world of Black Panther, much like James Gunn did with his soundtrack and score for Guardians of the Galaxy. However, this will be Marvel’s first opportunity to top the charts with original music.
The new trailer offers new dialogue and a little better look into the motivations of Jordan’s Kilmonger. Jordan has explained that he is looking to break the mold of Marvel villains with his performance and it will be interesting to see how the characters of Wakanda are ultimately portrayed. Additionally, it seems that most of the film is still being kept under wraps and with only five weeks until the movie’s release, it appears that the world is more than ready. Enjoy the trailer:

KRYPTON Trailer: Adam Strange, Braniac, and Time Travel, in Ambitious New Look
One of the greatest challenges in storytelling is to subvert your audiences’ expectations. However, that same challenge also holds the largest reward when an ambitious creator can succeed in taking their story to even greater heights. With that being said, expectations couldn’t have been much lower for the SyFy Network’s upcoming TV show, Krypton.
The upcoming television show, inspired by the pages of DC Comics and Superman, takes place generations before the birth of Kal-El/Clark Kent, aka Superman, on his home planet of Krypton. It follows the adventures of his grandfather, Seyg-El (Cameron Cuffe), as the untold story of the Man of Steel’s ancestor and the foundation that he left for the universe’s greatest superhero to be born. Krypton was created by David S. Goyer, the screenwriter behind Blade, Batman Begins, and Man of Steel. The series first season has a ten-episode run and premieres in two short months.
Recently, the show’s creators have begun to hint at the story and scope of the series, that despite the show’s setting in the past, will still incorporate many iconic characters and locations from DC Comics’ lore. The show tracks Seyg-El’s discovery that his grandson is destined to become a mythic hero due to a time traveler, Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos), who journeys to his planet to change the course of history. This sci-fi element will enable the show to incorporate characters from the both the present time and ones who live on far off planets.
This is what Goyer had to say about the possibilities for the series at the show’s panel at the Television Critic’s Association:
“Since you can tell time travel is involved, what that means is history can be changed. What happens in this show could be very different than the backstory that most people know. It will affect what’s happening today. Because there’s a time travel element, we have a tremendous amount of free rein. Not that much is known about Kryptonian society in the comic books.”
It seems that the ambitions of the show are beyond what most have anticipated. The showrunners have already either confirmed or hinted at appearances from Braniac, Doomsday, and even the Green Lantern Corps. There may be no real limits to where the show can go. Now the biggest question will be if the SyFy channel can recapture the magic of unexpected hits like Battlestar Galactica and make Krypton a surprise sensation as well. It’s hard to say that this show is a lock, however it is worth a look… Check it out:

Official Synopsis:
Syfy’s Krypton, the much-anticipated Superman prequel set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet, will follow Superman’s grandfather — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.
Krypton will be executive produced by David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Dark Knight trilogy) through his Phantom Four banner. Damian Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) will serve as executive producer/showrunner; Colm McCarthy (She Who Brings Gifts, Peaky Blinders) is set to direct and co-executive produce the pilot. The pilot teleplay and story is written by David S. Goyer & Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). Krypton will be produced by Warner Horizon Television and is based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, published by DC Comics.
Krypton premieres on March 21st on SyFy.

Christian Bale Confirms Talks for SOLO and Future STAR WARS Role
The Star Wars franchise has entered a new era with December’s release of The Last Jedi and last year’s Rogue One. LucasFilm is taking the future of the Jedi in bold new directions and over the coming years things will only wilder.
LucasFilm’s second spin-off from the Star Wars universe, Solo: A Star Wars Story, is coming this summer and tells the story of a young Han Solo and his developmental adventures in a galaxy far, far away. The film’s cast features newcomer Alden Ehrenreich as young Solo, Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino as Lando Calrissian, and Woody Harrelson in a brand new mentor role.
When Harrelson was cast there were whispers that Academy Award winner Christian Bale was being pursued for a role as well, which quickly passed. However in a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Bale confirmed that he was indeed up for Harrelson’s role in the production which then had Phil Lord and Chris Miller at the helm. The directing duo went on to be unceremoniously dismissed weeks into the film’s shoot due to creative differences, ultimately being replaced by Hollywood veteran Ron Howard. In the podcast, Bale explained his brush with Solo:
“Yes, [it was] very tempting. I not only love the films going back to my childhood but also have a very long relationship with Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall because they did Empire of the Sun many years back. There was discussion, [and] I hope there will be future discussions.”
The connection that Bale has to Kennedy and Marshall runs deep, as Empire of the Sun was the Steven Spielberg movie that first debuted the child prodigy who would go on to star in Newsies, American Psycho, and ultimately the star of The Dark Knight trilogy. Over the past two decades, Bale has solidified himself among the pantheon of all-time great actors, so this connection is one that will certainly be fostered in the future.
It seems that ultimately Bale made the right decision on passing on the role. Lord and Miller’s improvisational style of filmmaking would seem to be at odds with Bale’s intensity and body-transforming commitment to his craft. It’s ironic that the more even-handed Howard ultimately took over the project, however sometimes things do happen for a reason.
It’s clear that Bale is simply waiting for the right Star Wars project. The actor is known for his dramatic range, so it would be criminal to not place him in film that could take full advantage of his abilities. Solo clearly was not the right fit, as there has been a cloud hanging over the production since the firing of Lord and Miller, with recent reports that the final movie may disappoint fans.
There are many new projects coming down the pipeline, perhaps most notably a brand new trilogy that is currently being plotted by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson (Looper). Previously, the director was known for his brooding and thought-provoking dramatic thrillers and it seems that pairing the two is an opportunity too big to not contemplate. It will be some time before this story comes to a conclusion, but it’s certainly one to keep your eye on.
Solo: A Star Wars Story opens on May 25th, 2018.
