There had been strings to pull and people to call and family to weather once they’d learned he’d been inquiring as to Ivory Springs cosmetics and that he had even briefly visited to retrieve them—outcries of ‘why hadn’t he visited personally?’ And ‘how was he?’

All too tedious! But the personally ordered cosmetics and spa treatments were enshrined neatly within a glittering, purple box fastened by a silver ribbon. The gift would be left in the receiving room of Pomefiore. Some frightened, first year students would whisper of the lion’s shadow that they thought they saw.

This gift, however? Addressed to Vil in shockingly fine penmanship.

It should come as no surprise that word travels fast around Nightraven College. Unfortunately, Pomefiore was not so different in terms of gossip. Many students thought they were sly enough to gossip without Vil hearing — they'd be mistaken.

Normally, Vil had no qualms in helping his students hold their tongues if they found it difficult to do so on their own. Despite this, when he heard whispers echoing around his dorm about a lion's shadow looming about Pomefiore's halls — well, he had to see for himself! Rather, come to address the source, directly — as he often does with rumors if he can help it.

To Vil's dismay, there was no source to address as he rounded the corner leading to the main hall. No lion's shadow. No soft clinking of the lion's jewelry that would help indicate a certain lion's presence if he were to be near. Typical. A shame, he would've loved to see a sour face on his birthday of all days.

Suppose it is only first-year students picking the lion as a conversation piece and reading him to filth in the process. But Vil's eyes are sharp, catching the silver ribbon barely peeking out from under the piles of gifts. It wasn't there earlier, that was for certain. Its packaging is too neat for him to want to save for later like the other gifts, and he feels vindicated when he examines the gift closer. That lazy piece of...

His eyes stare at the penmanship, almost impressed. Painted lips are pursed until he reveals the contents of the gift. How did he know what products to get? Rolling his eyes, Vil extracts the lotion to apply to his hands. He missed this product, in particular; he finished the one he bought so quickly!

How fortunate to have the Leona Kingscholar hand-pick a gift for him? It would've been even more fortunate if Kingscholar had shown that handsome face instead of dropping a gift off without wishing him happy birthday to him, directly! In any case, he should thank Leona properly (and teach him manners for the next time it's someone's birthday). Thank you.
