Welcome to the fourth installment of the Rescue Corps/Pikmin 4 Dating Sim development blog! A weekly "news letter" where I will discuss my progress on the dating simulator.

Reception to the Yonny preview

Reception of the preview, among others, have been exceptionally positive especially on tumblr! I have had some odd reactions (though not outright malicious) from members outside of the tumblr community, namely discord, which is to be expected...

I understand a "Pikmin dating sim" is an odd thing to "sell" to the general fanbase. I'm a liiiitttleee scared to "advertise" this game outside of tumblr.. Wish me luck LMAO I won't be spreading the word till I am almost done with the first three routes so I got time.

Also can we talk about how mean the fanbase can get sometimes about yumeshipping/shipping in general??

there's really no rhyme or reason to this doodle page other than "how did Sigma interact with his classmates from ages 6 - 26 while he was in Wizard Training School" so. i hope you can enjoy...my ramblings.

(really i have no idea how enjoyable these are for other people--i mainly just doodle all the little character-building skits i have in my head when i'm fleshing a character out for these) (I Enjoy Drawing Them though, so....behold...)

when he finally passed the mage qualifiers, sigma started EXCLUSIVELY going by his wizard title. He simply wouldn't respond unless he was called "The Cerulean Raven" (the 'the' was not optional)

WAIT I JUST REMEMBERED I WAS GOINH TO ASK THIS A FEW DAYS AGO: is it ever said what species of moth juno is?? It mightve been and I’m just a Fake Fan but I’m curious. Do the moth types have set species or do they just kinda Exist with different colorings but no notable biological differences or scientific groupings?

Short story: Juno's not based on any real species of moth, but he IS part of the moth-type earthfolk phenotypical group that resembles "basic" (geometridae, noctuidae, saturniidae etc.) moths

LONG STORY: (and explaination of variation within moth-type earthfolk below)

(at this point you know that if i put a long story under a readmore it is going to be LONG so be warned)

I'll go into this a bit in the Earthfolk Files, but since those are pretty far out and Dr. Aberdora doesn't really care to know much about bugs, I'll explain it in depth here.

So, to summarize, there are 4 "types" of Earthfolk that exist--skeletons (modeled after the human skeletal structure), moths (modeled after moths), spiders (modeled after arachnids in general), and frogs (modeled after frogs/toads). It's important to note that these guys aren't ACTUALLY the things that they're modeled after, and as such they're bound more by vibes and evoking the imagery of the thing that they're based on than any of the actual limitations within their inspiration (I'm saying this both in the terms of me as the real person who is drawing these things AND in the terms of the in-universe individual who first created the Earthfolk for warfaring purposes). For example, skeleton-types have far fewer bones than and are VERY differently shaped than an actual human skeleton, moth-types have bird-like feet and snail-like radulae, etc.

So. Variation within types. Despite their initial creator generally not caring what they looked like beyond a) being able to move and b) generally embodying the fear that they wanted to evoke in people, Earthfolk within the different types have some amount of variation within the specific type "rules" that were set by this person due to the chaotic nature of the entity that keeps them alive and allows them to reproduce.

While these differences are very small in some types (skeletons really only vary in "tooth" and cheek shape, for example), there's actually a pretty big variety within moth-types, which each moth-type fitting VERY ROUGHLY into a sort of real moth family-based blueprint when it comes to their general facial structure. Within that facial variation, you have a lot more freedom in fur/mane/wing pattern and color, antenna thickness (which is the trait used to arbitrarily decide "male" and "female" despite the earthfolk being completely sexless beings), fur type, eye shape, whatever. TLDR: They can have basically any color or pattern that you want as long as they look roughly like SOME kind of moth in the face and adhere to the general "type" rules for the moth earthfolk.

The "default" mothtype face (the one that Juno and both of his parents have) is closest to geometridae, noctuidae, saturniidae, etc. moths with a roundish "basic" shape

Then we've got ones with big fur crests and prominent upturned "noses" (like Juno's cousin Sophie) that resemble notodontidae, limacodidae, subfamily plusiinae, etc.

We also have these sphynx moth guys with faces based on sphingidae

And ones with big ol snouts that resemble crambidae, tortricidae, pyralidae etc.

There are definitely families I didn't mention, but these are just some of the basic face types. As long as a moth has some kind of interesting feature, a moth-type can have it in canon.

None of these differences would quite mark them as a different "species" within the moth "type" distinction since any moths with any mixture of these traits can create mothtype offspring--these face shapes that resemble families of moths are about as inconsequential "genetics"-wise (they don't have genes but you get what i mean) as fur or eye color. And visual differences can vary a lot within families, with certain traits such as color, texture, shape, whatever being passed on through the generations with new traits also being sprinkled in by the central Heart entity (see: two of Juno's siblings have pink fur like their grandmother did and two others have curly manes like their mom, while completely new traits like the spiked mane, long fur, or piebald patterning are randomly thrown into some individuals with no basis for it in the family tree)

There are also certainly moth-types that just so happen to resemble a real moth species (like Juno's grandma looking like a rosy maple moth), but this doesn't mean anything in-universe other than that I thought a particular moth species looked cool and wanted to make a character out of it. So could you theoretically make a mothtype character that's supposed to look like a carmine snout moth? Absolutely! Would it be scientifically distinct from any other mothtype? Nope, the resemblance would just be a coincidence

So. If there's this much variety in moth-types, what traits do they all share?

As a rule, all moth-types have:

-Reflective "human" eyespots on both their fore- and hind-wings

-4 arms, 4 wings, 2 antennae, 2 eyes, and 2 legs (note: injuries can decrease these numbers, like Rose, who only had 3 wings due to being shot during the war)

-4 fingered hands with 1 thumb and 4 toed feet with one backwards-facing toe

-Fur on their heads, necks, bodies, calves, forearms, and the back of their hands

-A pointed tongue lined with sharp teeth that rests in a mouth cavity similarly lined with sharp teeth (used to slice food into a thin enough slurry to swallow)

-A Heart located in their low chest, analagous location to human intestines

-Gas vents under their chest fur to expel gases from burning fuel in the Heart

-3 downward-facing spines on the back of their thighs (originally used in combat)

As long as an earthfolk fits these criteria, it's a moth-type!

You may be looking at this thinking "man, given all the potential for creating an interesting looking moth character, Juno's super generic!" And you'd be 100% right. He's super basic looking.

He kind of likes it that way, though.
