Write whatever you want! I love some cliffhangers!
Writing tip #9: A story usually starts with a conflict that builds until it peaks at the climax and falls at the resolution. Unless you don’t feel like it. In which case, write what pleases you. There’s no actual RULE about this, or anything else.

(Do you actually know the rules for doing dialouge because I struggle with that so freaking much op it's sad)
I’M SO GLAD YOU ASKED
Rule #1: KEEP YOUR PUNCTUATION INSIDE OF THE QUOTATION MARKS. PLEASE, I’M BEGGING YOU.
Ex. “Santa Claus fucked my mom,” the orphan said.
Ex. “Santa Claus fucked your mom?” the headmaster repeated with shock.
Ex. “Yes!”
See? Punctuation stays inside of the quotes like mayonnaise on the inner slice of a sandwich. Use that to remember this rule, if you have to. Just think of punctuation as creamy mayo and the quotations marks as bread. You don’t want to pick up a sandwich with mayonnaise slathered all over the outside.
Rule #2: Please, for the love of god, don’t go around sprinkling an exclamation point into every line like it’s cake frosting and needs to be an inch thick for the sugar-loving birthday boy. There are diabetics at this party, Karen. Just a spoonful of frosting is fine every once in a while, but if every single character feels the need to “exclaim” and “shout” and “scream” every five seconds, I will scream and immediately leave to go read something else. Too many exclamation points means a headache. Be conservative with the fucking frosting.
Rule #3: Similarly, you don’t need to capitalize dialogue very often! Or at all! I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve needed to do it. Once we know a character is yelling, all we need is an exclamation point every once in a while or some italics. Capitalizing an entire phrase feels like that fucking “hoopla” fish from Spongebob shouting at me mindlessly.
:( Bad Sentence: “OH MY GOD!” she shouted.
:) Good Sentence: “Oh my god!” she shouted, nearly blowing out her friend’s eardrum.
Rule #4: Pace yourself with those dialogue tags, dude. Not every line needs to be, “he said,” “she yelled,” “they remarked,” “he cried,” “she replied.” You don’t need all that. The only times you really need dialogue tags are:
When the reader doesn’t know who is saying what
When the character says something in a way that doesn’t come across in the dialogue itself
When you need it for pacing reasons, like you want the reader to slow down for a second
Aaand that’s about it tbh. Keep it simple, please. And if I see you following the “said is dead” rule and using every word except for “said” if your writing, I will break into your home in the middle of the night and return all of your groceries to the supermarket.
Rule #5: Stop using “?!” when you write things?? Please??? What even is that???? When you’re writing something that isn’t a comic book or jotted notes, you do not need it. Trust me.
Instead, use the very rare dialogue tag. Don’t write, “What happened?!” Try instead, “What happened?” he gasped/yelped/squawked.
Or, even better, just stick to italics. “What happened?” Simple, yet it still adds a sense of urgency to the dialogue.
Rule #6: If you use a comma after a punctuation mark in dialogue, (ex. “I’m alive!,” the zombie said), I will put your dog up for adoption. Don’t do it.
Rule #7: Use italics when:
A word is said in a different language
Someone is talking through a phone or radio
Someone is using sign language
You can’t see the speaker
Someone has voices in their head or is just plain thinking
That’s all I’ve got for now but PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE USE THESE TIPS WHEN WRITING I BEG OF YOU, I DON’T WANT TO CLOSE A FANFIC BECAUSE THE FIRST LINE I SEE STARING ME IN THE FACE IS: “Who took my sandwich?!,” Bob screamed.

If you’re looking for an easy way to style text messages on AO3 so they look a little more like a phone interface, here’s the method I use that involves blockquotes and a work skin. If you have questions about how to use this, or if you want to do something different, send a message or ask me on twitter!

That's my kind of trope too!
Tumblr media
I'm afraid I must agree with @crierhugo. Personally I'm a total sap for that kind of trope.
