Clubkid / Camp
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clubkid / Camp: is an aesthetic style and sensibility that regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value. Camp aesthetics disrupt many of modernism's notions of what art is and what can be classified as high art by inverting aesthetic attributes such as beauty, value, and taste through an invitation of a different kind of apprehension and consumption.
Leigh Bowery is mostly known for their camp outfits, mostly shown in nightlife in 1980's London.

Genderfuck: can describe a gender identity and/or gender expressionwhere gendered expectations are deliberately played with to combine gender-specific signals. The act of engaging in this identity or expression is sometimes referred to as genderfucking. Individuals who genderfuck are sometimes referred to as genderfucks or genderfuckers.
The term Genderfuck appears as early as 1972. In 1974, it was explained when gay activist and artist Christopher Lonc used the term in a Gay Sunshine article he titled "Genderfuck and Its Delights". He wanted to encourage more men to wear drag. The term became closely associated with drag culture. Jesse Shiedlower cited a definition for gender fuck in Laud Humprey's 1972 research novel, Out of the Closets: Sociology of Homosexual Liberation. Jesse described the term as "a form of extended guerilla theatre".
The use of the term 'fuck' in genderfuck means to "rebel against" or "mess with". Thus it is a label for those who wish to mess with the traditional gender binary, usually by "mixing or bending one’s gender expression, identity, or presentation". It can also be seen as a way to combat or dismantle the gender binary via "a gender identity, expression, or presentation that challenges existing norms and expectations in a given cultural context".

Red ribbon: The red ribbon is the universal symbol of awareness and support for people living with HIV. Wearing a ribbon is a great way to raise awareness on and during the run up to World AIDS Day, annually on December 1st.

Pink Triangle (Top Left), Labrys Flag (Top Right), Lambda (Bottom Left), Transgender Symbol (Bottom Right)
Iconography also plays a vital role in much of the queer community's expression. One of the most prominent examples of queer iconography is in the inverted pink triangle reclaimed from its Nazi Germany roots during the height of the gay liberation movement. Similarly, the lambda has a history as a queer symbol used during the gay rights movements. Queer semiotics has also taken on the form of images such as the labrys and a double-sided axe that serves as a shared symbol for feminism and lesbian pride. Figure 2 displays the aforementioned queer semiotics. Historical and modern applications of queer semiotics highlight the potential application of visual means representing queerness through a shared aesthetic. Though some technology does showcase queer iconography (for example, wearing a rainbow flag wristwatch strap on an apple watch), little research have explored at the potential of iconography and how it would be used by western queer cultures in wearable technology.
