hi. if you have not read the your love is standing next to me series by fivecenturiesverse - aka @fivecenturiesverse - on ao3, what are you even doing with your life?
i originally had a lot more words planned to review and rec this fic, but i forgot them all in the span of 24 hours, so i'll do my best.
the series is a 10-parter, all oneshots, well-formatted and, as usual for fives, extremely well-written. it's an almost epistolary future-fic, written as outsiders' social media posts about steve and eddie, who in this case are both singers in bands. eddie's band is indiana panic, steve's is nail bat babysitter; the two are in a collaborative band called bright teeth bat bait.
this fic features tumblr posts, interviews, and absolutely phenomenal lyrics. they have all been compiled here in case you want to skip ahead and read those first; i wouldn't recommend that though. get the context first!! i read this entire series (all 24K words of it) in one night. i could not stop myself, and once i finished i found myself strangely bereft as though a friend had left my house, much like some characters in the last fic of the series.
it features cameos from the kids, robin, and surprisingly enough, tammy thompson. however, she makes it work. i never thought i would be appreciating a social media fic series so much, but it is brilliant. the lyrics, the meaning behind them... as an aspiring songwriter, i truly adore what is written in these pages. my favourite lyric is: “time feels like rust on a porch swing // like flowers growing where the earth // opens her mouth to sing // time feels like that, on summer days” [Greenwich Mean Time, “The Orange Tree House” NBB, 2007] as featured in the last fic. however, all of them are brilliant. i'm also quite partial to: “wrinkles and sun damage // on Leonid leonine eyes // textures my fingertips have known // counted, loved // smoothed and designed // an image of time // I: the architect” — Lionesses Stalk My Kitchen, NBB: TOTH 2007 - from the same fic.
i suddenly find myself of the urge to simply... fill in the gaps of the bands' discography, where fivecenturiesverse has not given lyrics - almost to tease readers into filling in the blanks ourselves, to think of what the song might be about just by name only. my favourite album or place mentioned in the story might just be The Orange Tree House.
here is the summary from the first work in the series, love like an ache in the jaw:
Steve Harrington and Eddie Munson, famous musicians in their own rights, have a collaborative band together called 'Bright Teeth Bat Bait'. They return for a surprise fourth album, almost a decade after their last. (Organised social media posts and news articles chart the release of the album.) assigned-batbait-atbirth GIF set description: several instances from Indiana Panic live concerts in which they bring on Steve for a BTBB song or two; Gareth (Indiana Panic drummer) looks like he’s dying inside, meanwhile Steve and Eddie come close to having sex on stage in the foreground of the GIFs #i want what ever these two have going on #but instead i am gareth
if you read it, i hope you enjoy - and don't forget to leave a kudos and a comment!
this review kind of got away from me and i really like this fic if you can't tell !! i might do some more of these reviews some other day :~)
