Oh and lest I forget.
Like with the heliolisk before, I made the boi into a pfp for me to use for next while on discord and telegram.
So I'll use this chance to complain that I SPENT THE ENTIRE DAY FIGHTING AGAINST THE SCANNER AND THAT TECHNOLOGY IS EVIL AND I HATE IT
anyway i love kyurems have a good day~!
Wu of Dawn's Boundary
Tumblr media
Unfrozen, reintegrating. Ancestral trauma dug deep, yet there is always warmth awaiting at the Dawn's Boundary.
"My name is Wu, sir. How may I help you tonight?"
Wu's been a character I was working on for last, oh, year. More than that, actually. A Kyurem that abandoned the icy visage, that tries to be proper. The dragon. Past cannot be abandoned or ignored, yet perhaps the future can still hold some pride.
I have three kyurem characters, and they're all dealing with ancestral trauma of the original Kyurem [who split apart, and was the cause of a major civil war] in their own ways. Wicked gave in fully to it, being miserable in a cave. Raic, who was around here before, tries to ignore it and find his own meaning in life, separate to the trauma. And finally Wu, who has truly made peace with his past, and found pride in who he has always been.
I really like Wu as a character. He's wise, he's helpful, he truly desires someone to be there for him. If he can be around people, he prospers and overcomes his issues; leave him alone for too long and he's visibly withering away. And so, he found a job in a very people-focused place, he has his own bar so he's forced to interact with strangers day by day. He's forced to thaw the chains of misery.
He's not really doing this on his own, either. He had someone, a particularly powerful creature who made a pokemon-friendly city, kick his ass out of solitude twice. Maybe I'll get more into detail on the city, and its unusual owner... but not in this post.
His bar is an unusual place. It opens only at night, and biggest part of it is a giant basking spot with caves. Wu intends the place to be for those pokemon who need a bit of warmth to get through cold nights. Constantly high temperature of the place caused him to lose his own ice [but only temporarily! Wu does refreeze if it gets too cold!] but he's more than okay with that. He needs not to be punished further.
So there's that. Wu. The iceless Kyurem. And straight up one of my favourite OCs I have ever made. He's a joyful fella.
Here at the end of this ramble I would like to thank, like, ALL of my friends I have been bothering over last few weeks asking for opinions, corrections, or just being a sneaky gremlin not saying what I was actually planning. You're all fantastic, and you all helped me get through doing this. Love y'all.

And now for the
✨bonus content~!✨

Before I finished the full proper art, I had a lot of simpler sketches, working out the visual design. Working out how would an iceless Kyurem even look to begin with was actually pretty fun. He'd clearly have some horns on his head, since both Zekrom and Reshiram have that going on for them in SOME way. But I figured his own head would be pretty uneventful, simple. He's the remnant, he doesn't get anything "fun" under that ice. In fused forms, Kyurem always has a frozen 'copy' of whatever he recovered, instead of just going with what he normally has. But if he had just a smooth head, ice wouldn't make sense to form spikes at all.
The vest came second, canonically it's a gift from his patrons, and he cherishes it dearly. It gives him a sense of being "civilized", part of the society that he once was so terrified of. [The hat was a joke by a friend. Let's say canonically he's been given it as well, but he only wears it for that single person.
The logo, like his name, is inspired by chinese symbolism. 5 visible rays refer to him being an individual [since it means "me"], 9 total rays refer to his status as Heroes' advisor [since it's associated with the emperor] It being a dawning sun is not chinese symbolism, it's just reflecting him "coming out of the darkness".
The bracers are a bit saucy. They're symbol of self-imprisonment, making Wu remember that he once kept himself isolated, bound by his own depression. But that isolation, that feeling of being trapped, bound, he grew to find actual comfort in it. He wears them not to reminder himself of worse times, but because they give him genuine peace. Bondage is his comfort fetish. It's definitely a big part of his personality, but he still tries to pass it off as something else, since, well, he's not going to discuss that with everyone.
Wu does, absolutely, refreeze in his sleep. His room is kept fairly cold for his own health, which means that every time he wakes up he has to deal with ice on him, and having it melt away soon enough. At first it was a struggle, but after some time he just accepted it as part of his routine. "Like a human shaving a beard in the morning."
I really like the sketches of him with people. Some random heliolisk patron, his "gracious host" that I shan't describe, and his "other halves" - Reshiram and Zeke. I really like the small progression, even if it's kinda backwards-placed. He's first alone, surrounded by darkness, then joined by Zeke who tries his best, occupies him, but he can't do much alone, and then joined by Reshiram as well, finally being able to smile and feel relaxed.
He wouldn't fuse with them even if he could, he values the two of them far too much to do that. They're their own individuals, vastly different, and it would be tantamount to murder in his opinion. Besides, he's got someone to talk to.
Zeke is a memer, his "ideal" is the internet and culture in there. Massive zoomer vibes, being nigh incomprehensible if he wants to. He used to agree with any ideals, but outgrew that, being embarrassed by that far too hard.
Reshiram instead devoted himself to understanding why some give their all for things that they know are obviously untrue. By which he means acting. Movies especially blew his mind.
Being able to talk to his counterparts freely, on good terms, it definitely healed Wu's wounded soul. There are days in which he shrinks, hides, as depression overtakes his mind... but as he is right now, he's not allowed to do that for too long. There's so many people watching out for him... he is truly a happy kyurem.
Oh, and, since he's still a bit frosty, especially around his wings, any bottles he grabs will be nicely chilled. That's a hit with patrons.

i hate it when i cant even write a poem about something because its too obvious. like in the airbnb i was at i guess it used to be a kids room cause you could see the imprint of one little glow in the dark star that had been missed and painted over in landlord white. like that's a poem already what's the point

the string
something happens when you join any artform where you connect to the past in invisible string . there is a tradition behind you and the second you pick up that pen or paintbrush or guitar you are connected to the thread and THAT alone is enough. every other success is a bonus
sometimes that thread is late nights on a tour bus cross country. sometimes it is a sold old galley opening. sometimes it is a book deal. but they are just the ones that get the most attention they are far from the most important
that thread also connects to the first garage band practice, to buying a paint set on a whim, to the novel in your head that refuses to trot out. these moments connect you to your heroes and your villains. to the way of legends.
and these quiet moments are SO IMPORTANT. never believe the bumps in the road have severed your tether. buckaroo that IS THE TETHER. you are part of a beautiful tradition and that alone bends timelines. congrats bud. its great to be here with you along the string
