Welp

I regret uninstalling everything to start from World Adventures in my attempt to be thorough with testing. Guess what won't bother to install anymore, claiming that the sims 3 update won't work, when it worked fine on the first install.

And now for the existential dread of if I can get the game running again, thanks to the hubris of that initial first bug free install instilled in me.

I still have digging to do on a couple threads but

I think me and some of my friends potentially solved the mystery of why the doll did what it did, or at least have the best guess as to what happened to it.

I'm compiling what we do know so far about it, but as far as I can tell, past Nov 2011, EA patched the game so that custom scripts could no longer be installed. If the doll had somehow still managed to infect a simmer past this point, they may have tried to turn their exchange downloads into a package file in order to still use the content without realizing why the launcher was blocking the install. That is, if they even noticed it there, and weren't using CCmagic to install it straight to their game from the get-go.

I'm still running a world with it to see what it will and won't attach itself to, but at the moment I can't even place it. The moment I try to buy it, it crashes the game. Going to see if just having it in game will eventually result in anything untoward.

I had a friend that knows coding look at the files. The code for the doll has nothing malicious in it, and had no bugs that he could see in it that would potentially cause the reported issues. The TSRW file was clean (given the program, that was a legit surprise, since it's always been a little corruption happy in my experience).

Confusion and minor speculation

So, it seems that the launcher refused to install the file as it is currently. Plan B was install the doll as a package and try to place it, and that made the game immediately crashed.

So it's still somewhat behaving as I expected. However, I'm assuming people could still use the doll to some degree, or did it just crash whenever they tried to use it?

Did it just attach itself to lots at random, even in that state? Or were they still usable back then, were placed as decor, and then spread before people knew it was the cause of their game breaking woes?

Scarily enough, the most recent report of an infection I can find is one in 2023 from the exchange. It seemed to still effect their game the same way as previous reports?

This leads me to wonder if I do need to roll back my game to the earliest versions in order to get it to "work", if it won't install or function with the latest version.

That aside, here are some things I do know from the files:

The original doll was made with tsrw version 1.0.12

The updated version that was released was made in version 1.0.14

The files I found included the C# code for the dolls "talking" function, and while I'm not the best coder, I can read enough of it to say that there doesn't appear to be anything in it that would make it behave maliciously. I may need a second pair of eyes to look at it for absolute confirmation of that, though. Considering how talented Rebecah was, and how much more advanced many of her other mods were, I find it highly doubtful the fault is in the code here.

This gives me new speculation as to why the doll would attach itself to lots on its own. How does anything become attached to a lot in the sims 3?

That is something I have admittedly never fully understood, how CC could be shared through lots or sims that way. Mainly because when I would save sims to share them they never had the CC go with them from what I remember? But that was over 10 years ago the last time I made one to share, and I would have to look at my old sim DLs to see if my memory is lying or not.

Getting back on track, the game has to have something in it to make it randomly assign the doll, right? New children in the worlds have to get teddy bears somehow, and since both doll variants were cloned from the bear, perhaps it spread that way. Only problem is that doesn't line up with the reports of people that claimed they received it from tattoos or other item downloads. The doll isn't flagged as anything but a kid's toy, so it wouldn't just randomly attach to anything else.

The main theory, as rude as it sounds, is that I think the people that said that weren't aware of just how MUCH they downloaded from the exchange. Maybe it wasn't a spree, but they may have DLed a sim, or a home, in addition to those items, or an item that was used as storage, as we did get storage units in WA that had released around the same time as the doll. The only reason I still want to double-check that though is due to a couple of the reports coming from respected people, and I can't imagine what they would gain lying about it.

Although they could just as easily fall under my theory, but that's why I'm trying to dissect this thing.

It could very well be, depending on your pc and QOL mods installed, that the doll may not be a threat anymore. I'll be making a trip back to the exchange, since it seems that perhaps the files I have might not be sufficient to infect myself.

I have an unusual request

I'm doing some digging for some nostalgia, and I need a particular piece of CC for some research for a video I want to make.

I need the Cursed Doll that ruined so many games back in the day, and I need it by itself.

Understandably, given the damage it caused, it's no longer available from the source. While I could just DL a bunch of old houses from the exchange in hopes of obtaining it, I have no idea how I could extract just the doll from the lot file. I don't even know if doing that would even be possible.

I'm already combing through old graveyards on the chance one of them might have it, but I sincerely doubt it.

One of the number of other projects I started while still trying to finish the prom set. I loved this and a few other bunk beds, but hated how they never had a single bed companion. I think I need to take it back to milkshape, and replace the blanket since it isn't animating/moving right. Using the weights tool in TSR hasn't really helped it, and I had reweighted it anyway since I wasn't sure if it had some of the same weights anyway, as I had used the loft version of the bed.

I found the BEST mod!

This mod recategorizes and puts everything in build and buy mode in better order for searching! I have been using it for a couple days now and it makes finding things so much easier! It even adds everything in buydebug to your regular build and buy mode. I love it so much!!

You do have to sign up on the website to download the mod but it is so totally worth it!

Looking for a pose set

This one in particular, the simple model poses. The link to the rar file has been dead for a while, and I sent a message to them a couple of months or more back inquiring about them, and got no response.

I'm hoping there's still a working link out there in some graveyard I hadn't been able to find, or for someone to maybe still have them in an old hard drive somewhere.

Generations Shirt & Sweater Top - Channel Fix

For the first time ever, I wanted to use this top, only to discover that EA didn’t account for the 1st channel showing underneath the gradient between the 2nd and 3rd channels. Luckily, it was a very simple fix.

This is a default replacement, it requires the Generations EP. The only thing edited is the mask, so it won’t interfere with recategorizers or mesh edits, if you have any. It applies to both teen and YA/A, as they share textures. Presets are unchanged.
