roronoa zoro, non-op au
you knew your boyfriend had a horrible sense of direction. not knowing his left and right, despite having it tattooed on his hand. not remembering any streets. it was surprising how he has lived this long with these drawbacks. yet, today he remembered the way.
"zoro, take a-" he turned before you could finish your sentence. you were stunned for a while, but maybe it was out of sheer luck.
"take a r-"
"right, i know," zoro interrupted your directions.
maybe he was really lucky...
but it happened, again and again. until you were in fromt of your home.
"zoro."
"yea?"
"you remembered the way back," you turned your body to his.
"hm. i did," zoro brushed it off as he unbuckled both of your seatbelts.
"zoro, this is big! you know your way!"
"i mean. it isn't that hard when i keep coming here. it's like instinct at this point," he continued his preparation to leave the car, giving you a "let's get going" glance in the process. and finally when you both exited the car, you could finally see zoro in the moonlight with flushed cheeks.
"you're blushing! did you train yourself to remember the way to my house?" you teased zoro, nudging him in the process.
"yea....i did."

Sanji x gardener!reader
This is an amazing request from @secretlife028
Warnings: from my gardener!reader series but can be read as a stand alone, fem reader in mind but no pronouns used, WCI spoilers? But very vague, angst to fluff, good ending
Word count: 1.3k
Summary: In which you say I love you to Sanji in the worst scenario
₊˚❀.ೃ࿔*:・
You were in love with Sanji
That was something clear for everyone that had spent time with both of you. Your eyes following his mastered hands as he chopped the ingredients for dinner, the soft glances and sweet thank you’s you’ll grace the cook with whenever he offered you his delicious meals, your presence after midnight as he cleaned the kitchen a reminder of your unspoken love and affection.
You never thought about whether he would love you the same, the love you gave away was honest and non refundable. You loved because you wanted to
Something the cook was not used to, he was the kind of person to melt at any bit of attention, sign of affection or even acknowledgement, but he allowed himself to be loved by you
But that felt like a lifetime ago. Simpler times where you’ll wake up in the Going Merry, your crew mates laughter in the distance and the smell of fresh breakfast in the morning.
Now here you stand, in front of the man you had wrapped your heart in a bow for, leaving
“Why are you doing this?” You looked at Sanji who was just a feet away but felt like he had left already, his eyes wouldn’t meet yours
“That doesn’t concern you” your heart clenched once more at the stern voice leaving his mouth, that tender tone he once spoke to you with long gone, like a hazy memory
Vines grew on the cooks legs, like you were begging for him to stay and comeback to himself, holding him in place before you, breath shaky like you were about to break
“Sanji speak to me!” You were making this awfully difficult for him, he knew you’ll try and fight but didn’t expect you to be this fierce. Your voice echoed trough his thoughts like a haunting lullaby trying to wake him up from this awful nightmare
“There’s nothing left to say y/n” liar, Sanjis heart held so much unspoken feelings, words, intentions, so much love for you. You frantically took his hand in yours as you wrapped it around in blooming flowers grass and branches, like a grounding spell
“Stop this” you begged
“You’re the one that should stop”
“You want me to stop loving you Sanji?” His breath hitched, the air in his lungs trapped in his throat, he couldn’t have missheard you since you spoke loud and clear, unafraid and so certain. What once was difficult now felt impossible, of course you decided this was the time you’d let the L word roll out of your tongue, now that he couldn’t answer, that he couldn’t say a word of how he actually felt. His heartbeat accelerated in fear, he had dreamed of this moment of you before him saying this, but it didn’t quite went this way
“Because you know damn well I can’t” was the last thing you said before the blonde pulled away from your hold, loosing your balance at the force in his movement, breaking both of your hearts
“Too bad, because you have to please stop”
So you stopped, standing silently as the love of your life left
You had never admitted this to anyone before, but as Nami held your sad trembling frame in a tight hug you couldn’t help but to say
“Why am I always left behind?” every single word spoken in a broken whisper, merely making it out of your parted lips, but Nami catches it and she can’t help but to wince, like she could feel the deep cut in your heart
“I promise you we’ll get him back”
And you did, but walking into a wedding wasn’t exactly how you expected this rescue would go
The lights jumping from the white garments fry your brain, the wedding bells making your ears bleed and your vision blurry with water that falls from your eyes. Why her? Why now? You knew there was a possibility for Sanji to not reciprocate your love, but reality just hits you now as you see him holding another woman’s hands in his, as he is about to make a promise that you wished accompanied your name after it. Thorns growing out of your frame like venom
But, you got him back
Not a word is exchanged between the two of you in the ride back to The Sunny, your minds busy replaying the mix of emotions you both had gone trough the last few days
Sanji cannot get your voice saying I love you out of his
Your mind flashing images of Sanji and Pudding at the altar
What was there to say after that?
“Thank you for saving me, flower” he whispers as he settles at your side, Nami’s eyes open like dishes as she listens quietly, praying to whatever god is out there that the blonde doesn’t screw things up more with you
“No problem” the icy tone and your numb expression makes him miss your sweet smile, warm laugh and twinkling eyes he was once graced with to see everyday
Another silence follows, a painful one. A silence that makes him realize what he had made you feel
But he’s lucky you’re the most understanding, kind and benevolent being that has walked this earth
His eyes lock in your fidgeting hands, flowers growing from the inside of your palms in anticipation. With the outmost delicacy, he breaks trough them and takes one of the flowers making you gasp, his skin against yours sending electric shocks around your body
He gets on one knee like the dramatic fool he is, the navigator face palming knowing this was to expect from her friend. You stay still
“I am sorry… I have hurt you, an unforgivable sin, I deserve whatever punishment you wish to bestow upon me” his words waiver, as if trying to formulate the best way to get his feelings across and make you come back to him, to open like a sunflower under the beaming sun
“However” your eyes travel to his, getting lost in the endless sea behind them, praying for him to say the magic 3 words
“I hope my confession suffices as an offer worthy of your forgiveness” he pauses as he places the flower in your waving hair, so tender like you were made out of the most precious porcelain that could break at his touch
“I love you y/n, and I hope your love for me remains in your heart… at least a little”
You stay quiet, the expectancy making poor Sanji’s heart to jump like a firecracker, breaths heavy with hope and nervousness. And you break, because how could you not? You knew everything that happened was not to blame on him, in fact, he was much of a victim as you were, if not even more tragic for his own past to come and haunt him down just after he had found a life he could enjoy. With another batch of tears threatening to spill from your eyes, you smile
A smile that melts Sanji like an ice cream on the hottest summer day, a smile he had prayed for to see at least once again, even if he wasn’t the reason behind it. Yet here you were smiling at him, for him, with him
You jump down to his arms, holding him tightly as your hearts dance in opposite directions of your ribcage’s, finally complete
“You’re the biggest idiot I’ve ever met” you say between half sobs half giggles, you pull away to look at him again “But you’re my idiot”
Usually Sanji would be nothing less than a gentleman and had asked you for permission, but today, he decides to indulge and just crash his lips into yours
Finally
Nami just rolls her eyes and Luffy laughs, content to finally see his dearest friends make up
Sanji’s finally home

Pulse Point
opla!Zoro x reader
Summary: After almost losing you, Zoro is willing to do whatever it takes to keep you alive.
WC: 8.1k
Warnings: blood/gore, violence, no death but we get pretty close, medical inaccuracies probably
Tumblr media
The last thing you completely felt was a sword plunging straight through your chest.
The blade was ice cold and nothing had begun to hurt yet. It was just uncomfortable. Like there was something inside you, pushing your chest apart. There was, technically, but there was supposed to be something besides slight discomfort. You could feel the metal moving inside you, but it did not hurt. Maybe the adrenaline was helping.
For a second, you were one with the sword. Your body, pierced on its blade, took one final step backwards, pulling the sword out of your attacker's hands. He looked surprised. As if he expected you to be invincible. Like this wasn't a part of his plan. Like he expected your chest to secretly be made of rubber, like your captain, and the blade would just push your body backwards.
Unfortunately, that strength belonged solely to your captain. You were not indestructible, despite your frequent and overconfident declarations of that being so every time you managed to walk away from a fight with only a couple bruises and bloodstained clothes.
Those declarations were bold faced lies. You knew that you were as mortal as the others. As mortal as the man in front of you, whose blade had gone straight through your chest, who was looking on in disbelief as you waited for something to happen.
He reconciled with himself quickly enough, and grabbed the hilt of the sword once more, shoving the blade in further.
You could hear the screams all around you, but they rang dull and hazy, your ears stuffed with cotton. It was like you were underwater and they were above it, but even when they dove in, the words were still incoherent and dim.
You tried to scream yourself, but your voice choked in your throat. Your mouth hung open instead, in a look of pure shock. You felt like a doll, completely unable of moving on your own, only manipulated by the forces around you, namely the blade that had cut you open.
It started to hurt. At first you felt a burning ache, along where the blade sat. Soon, it spread. You were being torn apart. Cleaved in half. It hurt like all hell.
The man holding the sword showed no more remorse for you, using his foot as leverage to get your body off his weapon, pushing you to the ground.
Once your body was removed from the blade, you began to fall back. You attempted to tuck your head forwards to prevent any hard contact, but you were no longer able to control your movements.
Halfway down, you saw your murderer get tackled to the side by an unyielding force. It passed by so fast, you were unable to even see who had done it, but they began to hit him hard.
You hit the cobbled ground with a flash of white as your head collided against the stones, another ache that lingered as you attempted futilely to get ahold of yourself.
You were cold, your extremities shivering in shock as you lifted your head up hazily to view the gore of your chest, a horrific sight of blood and flesh. The pain radiated through you like a second heartbeat, so oppressive that you found it difficult to breathe. You simply choked on the air.
Finally, a person entered your line of sight. Luffy. He hovered over you, your captain. The way he looked at you reminded you of the day you almost lost Zoro. The pain in his eyes. He looked as inexperienced as ever. You did not want him, or any of them, to go through that experience again. Not with you.
You wanted to say something, apologize for not reacting when he thrust the blade forwards, for essentially letting him run you through, leaving a gaping wound that was drenching everything it could with a thick coating of blood.
Luffy shouted at you, looking desperately around before dropping to his knees next to you. You were still underwater. You couldn't hear anything clearly, and your vision was drifting in and out of focus.
Sanji came forward, on your other side. His coat was already slipping down his arms and with a swift movement, he bundled it up around his hand and pressed it against your wound.
You could tell he was apologizing, the same word, "sorry", etched on his lips as he leaned forward, sending more flashes of pain through your body. It was red hot, burning so bright you tried to writhe away from him, but Luffy's position made it difficult, blocking you from rolling over.
You attempted to scream, but instead, you felt something fill your mouth.
When you coughed the warm liquid up, you realized it was blood. At the very least you weren't choking on it yet, but it was only a matter of time.
Nami made her appearance at your feet, and Usopp followed, sitting in between Sanji and Nami, the same horror you saw from Luffy in his eyes.
You noted immediately that Zoro wasn't hovered over you as well and you worried that a grave fate had already befallen him.
When your lips parted to mouth his name, no sound leaving your bloodied jaw, everyone's heads shot in the same direction, at the approximate location your killer fell.
Nami leaned over and you saw Sanji carefully peek at the coat he was using to hold you together. It was a disgusting sight. The fabric came away completely darkened, soaked through with blood. Too much blood. The coat pressed down again, and now Sanji looked scared.
Zoro came into view, he looked furious, but it melted away immediately when he saw you. His anger was replaced with fear and devastation.
You wanted him to grab you and hold you against his chest, promising that everything would be alright, like he had many times before, but you didn't think that it was possible to be alright. Not this time.
He sat at your head, looking down at you and the sunbeams from behind his head made him look like some kind of angel, despite the flecks of blood splattered across his face and the bruise slowly darkening on his cheek.
For once, he did not shout at Sanji for touching you. He hardly acknowledged Sanji's work. His eyes were fixed on you. If he looked down at your injury, his eyes did not trace up the arms to see who it was staunching the blood and his brow did not furrow at the sight of the crewmate he would easily insult for looking at him the wrong way were this any other situation.
His hands took your face, attempting to reach out to you with his words, but you were unable to hear his request.
You wanted to hold him, and a weak arm raised from your side, hanging lazily in the air before Zoro took it. He squeezed gently, and you attempted to return the gesture, but your hold was weak enough as it was. He felt it anyways.
Sanji was forced to push harder on the injury and you recoiled once again, doing anything you could to escape the pain. This time, Zoro did notice Sanji and snapped out of his fear.
"Careful." He practically snarled at Sanji. You heard him faintly, surfacing for a second before dipping under again. The pain did not lessen, and you knew Sanji had to hold it as tight as he did because otherwise you'd be absolutely drained of blood.
You heard muffled talk above your head, but you only barely managed to grasp what they were trying to say. They were talking about finding a doctor, getting you somewhere safe.
You were exhausted, and you wanted nothing more than to close your eyes and drift into sleep, but you knew if you did fall unconscious, you might never wake up.
Your body became weightless as Zoro lifted you from the ground, new pain mixed with the old, and you felt awful. The coat pressed harder against you, if possible, but you didn't react. You were too weak. You felt like you were being squished when a hand pressed against the exit wound on your back.
Zoro began to walk, his pace hurried with your body resting in his arms, life seeping out as quickly as your blood.
Despite your limp position, you noted that your arm was not hanging down as Zoro ran. He had taken care when lifting you up to grip your wrist in his hand, a finger pressed against your wrist, directly over your pulse point, though by now it was more likely you would be feeling his pulse instead of him feeling yours.
You looked up and met eyes with Zoro. "Stay with me." He ordered as you surfaced again. You did your best, but you were fading fast. "Stay with me!" He shouted, picking up his pace. He was practically begging, and your heart broke.
Your head fell back, unable to hold itself up anymore, your breaths shallowing. Your eyes threatened to shut, but you tried your hardest to keep them open.
You felt yourself moving faster. Zoro's underwater voice begged once more. "Please." Whatever he was asking you to do, you could not hear. You drew whatever strength that remained and focused on his voice. "We're gonna find a doctor. They're gonna fix you."
Your eyes drifted shut for a long second before opening again. You didn't think you were going to make it. You felt unfixable.
You wanted to say goodbye to Zoro and thank him for everything he had done for you. You wanted to tell him how much you loved him, but your voice had disappeared long ago. Or perhaps only a minute or two. Time was drastically changed in your state.
The bright light of the sun disappeared as you were brought inside a building. You were no longer able to keep your eyes open as your body was laid down. You heard desperation from the muffled voices, but even those drifted away.
The last thing you heard was Zoro's deep voice, practically silent, but you recognized it nonetheless. There was some more ambiguous sounds, and a faint touch on your hand, and you were out.
None of the crew was allowed inside for the process, which left them standing outside the building, waiting.
Zoro stood still, only one step away from the door. If it opened he was likely to get hit in the face. He was covered in blood. Your blood. He felt sick.
He had never seen you like that before. So frail, broken. Weak. It hurt him to no end. You were strong. You were powerful and you never backed down. You stood tall before your enemies and treated them all equally, that is to say with unyielding force, and a barrage of attacks so powerful they had even put Zoro on his ass once.
Seeing you like that, your face ashen, your body nearly limp as you struggled to draw your breaths, it terrified him. You were a human, as fragile as any other, but Zoro had never seen you like that. Echoes of the way your body trembled while he carried you buzzed through his arms. An awful sensation.
"Zoro?" He turned around to look at whoever had called. He faced the crew, all sharing looks of worry, the same fears running through their heads.
"They're gonna help. Everything will be alright." Nami said, for the group's benefit as well as her own. "The doctors will help." Zoro said nothing.
Hours passed, each second agonizingly long. No updates, no confirmations, just a painful, unending wait. The only comfort the crew found was knowing that you were not dead yet. They would have been told already.
It was around midnight when the strangers came. There were three of them, each wearing dark cloaks. Black in the moonlight, but it would be reasonable to think that they might be blue in the daylight.
They walked without stopping to acknowledge the frightened crew, pushing past Zoro and walking straight into the building, closing the door behind them.
Zoro heard a couple guesses as to what the strange people were doing there, but all he could understand was that they were going in to help you. In that regard, he did not care if they had not looked at him, despite his looming presence at the door. He just needed you to be safe. He needed them to save you.
Time passed slower than ever, and Zoro was growing irritable. When Sanji left to get them some food, he refused his portion, saying it could be sacrificed to the captain. It was, but the group could tell that he was terrified for you.
Finally, after one last hour, the strangers left, the one at the front clutching a jar, with an indiscernible item floating inside. Payment for their strange services, the crew guessed.
They were followed out by the doctor, who was thanking them profusely before turning to the awaiting crew.
"Your friend is stable." The doctor said, tone warning. The crew hardly cared.
"They're alive?" Luffy asked. "Yes." There were relieved sighs all around. "But, there's a problem." The tension returned.
"We needed to use an old form of magic to save them. It keeps them alive, but only for a little while. When the magic runs out, your friend will die."
Zoro's fist clenched. "You couldn't save them?" He asked, accusatory. "We tried, but the wound cut too close to the vital organs. Without proper surgeons, our only shot was to mend as much as we could, and use the magic. We use it here to allow for peaceful goodbyes."
Zoro hated everything the doctor said, about not being able to heal you entirely, about this waning magic and the thought of having to say goodbye. It was disgusting.
"Goodbyes?" Usopp asked weakly. "Like, goodbye, forever?" The doctor nodded, a false solemnity. "Your friend is strong. I've had people slip through my fingers with far lighter injuries. I suppose they wanted to come back to you."
"Are they awake?" Zoro asked, voice flat, but bubbling with restrained emotions.
"Asleep right now, but they will awake in the morning. Until then you can find an inn to sleep in, and visit in the morning."
The doctor began to close the doors, but Zoro grabbed the door, holding it firmly. "I'm not leaving." Zoro said. "I want to stay with them." "We don't allow visitors at night." The doctor explained, a deep frown directed at Zoro's hand on the door. "It might disturb the other patient's rest." "Are there any other patients with them?" Zoro demanded. "Well no, but we still have rules." "Damn your rules. I need to be with them."
The doctor took an indignant breath, but let it out weakly. "If you touch nothing, you may stay. But only one of you. The rest will have to come back in the morning."
Zoro stepped forward, opening the door himself. No one dared challenge him. He was going to be at your side. He had to be.
"I'll see you in the morning," He turned to the crew, trying to control the shaking in his voice. A few scattered goodnights were spoken and with that, the crew left.
Zoro was led inside. The building smelled of pure alcohol, with an undercurrent of blood. It stung as he walked down the hall, led into the room where you were being kept.
You were alone in the room. On a bed, not accompanied by any fancy machinery or dressed excessively in bandages. He supposed your wound would be dressed under the paper thin gown you had been given. You lay still, your face calm. If Zoro had not seen the rhythmic, steady rise and fall of your chest, he would have sworn that you were already dead.
He approached you carefully, hand reaching out to hold yours. Your skin was cold against his. Still, he held on. With a careful touch, he pressed his thumb against your pulse point, feeling the gentle thrum beneath your skin, a sign of life. You were alive.
It wasn't right however. Not a heartbeat. The steady thumping of a pulse was replaced with a consistent feeling of movement. The magic, he realised. That was what was keeping you alive. Not your heart. Not anymore.
Still a sign of life, he breathed a sigh of relief, trying to keep himself composed, even though he wanted to collapse at the knowledge that you were at the very least alive. It meant he had time to save you. "It's going to be alright." He promised your sleeping form. "You are going to survive."
He sat on the floor, leaning back against your bed, head cushioned by your mattress. A hand stayed protectively around the hilt of his swords, at the ready, in the highly unlikely event that someone came to finish you off.
The other hand reached up to feel your pulse point again. It felt strange to feel the thrumming of magic under your skin instead of your blood. It was only a slight consolation that it was still responsible for your life.
Despite his best efforts to stay awake, Zoro slipped into a dreamless sleep at your bedside, soothed by the fact that for the time being, you were still alive.
The rest was needed, for he did not wake up until one of the nurses arrived in the morning, opening the door to your room, spurring Zoro into action. He did not pull out his swords, but the nurse looked terrified nonetheless. He probably looked a mess, having slept on the floor, your blood soaked into his clothes, still looking fresh from a fight.
After quickly checking on you, still asleep, the nurse nodded and left quickly, making significant efforts to not look Zoro in the eyes.
"Zoro?" Your weak voice caught his attention. He spun around to face you, seeing your eyes, fixed on him.
He moved to you, grateful to see you awake. You moved carefully, trying to ease yourself into a sitting position.
"Does it hurt?" Zoro asked, looking like he wanted to help, but unsure of how to offer it.
"I can't feel anything." You answered numbly, hand reaching up to your chest, where a check from the nurse had revealed your bandaged midsection.
You were not lying to comfort Zoro. In place of the agonising pain from before, there was nothingness. Like your insides had been scooped out, leaving you hollow.
Zoro explained as best he could what the doctors had done to you. You listened, all the while staring at your chest, feeling the hollowness.
"How much time do I have?" You asked, and Zoro cursed himself for not asking that question earlier. "I don't know."
"You have the next two days." The doctor said sternly, appearing from the door. "To say your goodbyes, pay your dues. It will be painless."
You said nothing, just looking blankly at the doctor. Faced so suddenly with your death twice in a very short timespan was a painful experience. You had thought you were safe.
Zoro watched you nervously. You looked scared. Obviously you despised the thought of dying, but he was still so unused to it.
He watched as your hand inched over to his. He reached up and took it without question. You squeezed his hand firmly, trying to keep your cool.
"Can we have a minute?" Zoro asked, tone sturdy, authoritative. "Alone?"
The doctor frowned, but said nothing, leaving as requested.
As soon as the door closed, Zoro turned to you, completely focused on you. Tears burned at his eyes. He was going to lose you.
"They couldn't save me?" You asked, looking straight ahead, still processing everything. "No. It was the only option. But I'm going to find something else. I promise. You're going to be alright."
You leaned forward, falling onto him, hugging him as tight as you could.
"I thought I was never going to do this again." You mumbled into his shoulder, tears welling in your eyes. "I wouldn't even get to say goodbye." Zoro's arms wrapped around you in a protective hold, avoiding  where the sword had exited your body. He too, felt the tears stinging his eyes. He had thought much of the same. "I was so scared." You admitted quietly. "It hurt so much and I couldn't keep my eyes open, it was awful."
You curled up, body moving closer to Zoro, who just held you tighter, clinging to you. "You're safe." He promised. "You're safe now."
He could feel your shaky breaths through his shirt. The spot on his shoulder where your eyes were pressed was suddenly damp. Zoro tried rubbing your back, but cautiously avoided the area of injury, giving him limited space to work with.
There was a knock on the door and you jolted up. Zoro expected you to wince, but the movement did nothing to affect you. You simply answered it with a call.
"Come in."
The door burst open, and your crewmates spilled in, rushing to you. The floodgates burst open. There was tears and confessions, everyone spilling truths that needed to be told to you for fear of you never getting to know otherwise.
Finally the doctor came in again, to deliver the news properly, this time with your found family there to hear it as well.
You got the recap, about the magic in you, how it would fade, giving you a peaceful send-off, with enough time to say your goodbyes. You nodded at the explanation, lips set in a firm line. You were still dying, but at least it was painless.
The crew decided to say their goodbyes individually, allowing them one last moment with you before the end.
The realisation set in slowly but surely. That you truly were experiencing the end, that death was coming for you, and your ticket to the afterlife, if there was one, had been paid with the magic in your chest, thrumming in place of your heart, keeping your blood moving as your body uselessly tried to replenish what had been lost.
The one-on-one conversations were moving, and you found yourself growing serious. This was your end. You had accepted it. They needed to as well.
You began to feel it fading. The strength you had felt earlier in the day was gone now, and it was more comfortable to sit still than to move around. You were getting weaker. You were still dying. It was frustrating, even if you had come to terms with it.
Most of your friends had gone already. Zoro was last. Before he came in, around lunchtime, the doctor paid you a visit to make sure everything was alright.
"How are you?" The doctor asked. "Fine. It doesn't hurt. I'm just tired." You admitted quietly. "You held on to your life well. We were all impressed. For a second, we almost thought you would make a recovery." The doctor said, checking your bandages for blood. "Oh?"
"Unfortunately it was impossible." The doctor covered quickly. "Without a surgeon, we could never be able to mend it properly. But, you've been stabilized. It's the best we could do."
The doctor finished the checkup and left, allowing Zoro to enter.
He looked tired. You saw the redness of his eyes. He had cried. You wondered if he split off in order to let it out or if he did it in front of the others. He had changed into fresh clothes, no longer covered in the horrific reminders of your attack.
"Hey Zoro." Your voice sounded so weak and you wanted to punch something to cope with your body threatening to shut down around you.
At the very least, you could speak. Throughout the day your voice had faded, going from your strong, regular tone to a scratchy whisper. It was tiring to speak too loud. You wanted to save Zoro the pain of seeing you like this, but he had already seen you while you knocked on death's door the first time. At least this time you were clean and able to see and hear him properly. You didn't want him to see you like this, but he didn't care. He needed to say goodbye.
He stood next to your bed. The sheets were pure white, a stark contrast to the blood that had been shed on the operating table. The bandages around your chest were pristine too, as if you were attempting a fashion statement instead of hiding your mortal wound.
In his mind's eye, Zoro could still picture you, limp in his arms. The visions flashed as he looked at you in the bed, barely moving, voice faded.
He had replayed the entire ordeal a thousand times over during his wait, from the last minutes of the fight, to him finding his place at your bed, protecting you from an unlikely attack.
He remembered every gory detail. The way you felt in his arms, the colour of the blood stained into the fabric of his shirt and Sanji's coat, the very make of the blade that had pierced you, every bruise he had pummeled into your murderer's face.
Your hand reached out, and he took it. This time, you inspected it, a finger brushing along his knuckles, which were rough and irritated. "Zoro." Your tone detailed the rest of the rant you wanted to go on. About how he needed to channel the anger somewhere else when he got angry. To not just rush at whatever he could and fight it.
He shook his head, defending himself. "I did this to the asshole who-" his voice caught and he cleared his throat, grumbling at the floor.
After taking down the man he had been a furious whirlwind, pummeling his fists into the man's face until he had been unrecognizable, only pulled away from his violence by the sight of you, eyes glazed over, trying desperately to stay alive.
You squeezed his hand, only slightly stronger than it had been less than a day before. He squeezed back with the same force.
You could feel the emotions in the room. It was stifling. Zoro refused to sit in the chair set up for your visitors, and by the looks of it, he would refuse if you asked him to.
You sat in silence, looking over his body, registering every inch of his skin you could see, making sure he was okay. You noted a cut on his bicep. It had scabbed over, but looked rough. At the very least, it could have used a bandage. The bruise on his cheek was darker now, but not serious. Still, an ice pack or some cold vegetables should have been used to soothe it.
"It's fine." Zoro refused to let you say anything about the situation, knowing your analytical way of scanning him for injuries.
"I've had worse." His voice wavered.
You felt the world still. His voice had never wavered before. Everything he said was strong and assured. Even in the most brutally honest discussions you had had with him, tears on both of your faces, he had not broken. He had hesitated, he had choked and been cut off. He had spoken words quickly in times of stress and his tone occasionally made him sound careless, but it shattered you to hear him crack.
You needed to hold him, so you pulled him down. You tugged on his arm and he followed your guide as you looped your arms around his neck. You could feel his unsteady breathing as his arms wrapped around you, his face buried in your shoulder.
You sat in silence, his ragged breathing in your ear as he tried to resist the emotions he was trying so hard to hide.
You leaned back, and he followed your lead, joining you on the bed, lifting you up so that you could lay on him, between his legs, just like you did on the ship. You rolled over once he got behind you, so that you were chest to chest, head nestled next to his, the rising and falling of his chest still evidently restrained.
You realized that he was warm and briefly wondered how cold you felt to him. His arms wrapped completely around you, warming you up. You realized a little too late that you were shaking. He held you protectively. Like a shield. He wanted, more than anything, to protect you, but he had not been able to. He had let you get hurt. He had stood by and done nothing until it was too late.
Having already failed you in his mind, he simply held you tight against him, begging whatever powers that may be- the powers that he did not believe in- to give him more time. To give him all the time in the world. To give him a miracle, anything to prevent him from dealing with this devastating reality.
"What do I do?" He unintentionally asked out loud. He found himself unable to look down at you, furious at his involvement, or lack thereof, with your current position, so close to death. He wanted to cry, but refused to let that happen. He needed to stay strong for you. He needed to protect you. He was not going to let you get hurt again.
"Zoro?" You said it just to catch his attention. The overuse of his name had been apparent, but necessary. "It wasn't your fault. It's okay. You can let it out."
The dam broke. The words were simple, but it was what he needed to hear. He shook with heavy sobs, but stayed quiet. There was no bawling or shouting, or anything you would expect. It was just quiet. His shaky breaths were all you could hear against the silence of the room around you, like he had trained himself to be as silent as possible when he cried.
"It's okay." You spoke the words again.
"It's not." His voice shook again. "I should have stopped him." "Don't blame yourself, it won't help you." "I could have stopped him."
"It was my fight." The firmness in your words silenced his protests. "I may have lost it, but it was my fight to lose. I wouldn't have stepped in between your fight with Mihawk." He opened his mouth but you stared him down.
"Promise me that when I'm gone you won't blame yourself. I don't blame you. I lost the fight. There was nothing any of you could have done." He nodded. A weak gesture.
"Promise me." You ordered.
"I promise." He said with a heavy sigh, followed by a shaky inhale. You breathed out and laid your head against his chest. "Good. It wasn't on you."
He was reaching the end of his cry, his breaths beginning to settle. "Please stay with me." You requested, comfortable in his arms. "Until the time comes."
"Of course."
He pulled the thin blanket up to keep you warm, still in his arms, lulled into a sense of peace for your last hours, however many you had left.
You thought back to the good times. Walking along sandy beaches and through lamplit towns at night, where the only thing that mattered was the person holding your hand. You thought back to napping with him, on deck, sitting next to him, your head on his shoulder, or in the hammock, swinging back and forth with the rocking of the boat, feeling safe in his arms.
You remembered talking. Talking about your interests while he lazily listened, comforted by the sound of your voice as you explained what you did and why you did it.
In a strange twist of events, you stayed quiet, while Zoro spoke up.
His monologue was about you, how much he loved you, the way you had impacted his life, memories he had of you, anything he could think of, so long as it pertained to you.
His speech was stilted and certainly not well thought out. His sentences dropped off at odd places or fizzled out when he could not think of anything more to say. His voice stayed as level as he could make it, the occasional tremor running through. It was far from an impassioned declaration of love, but that was not what he could provide for you. That was not what you needed. You needed him. And that included his awkward words, still unused to being this intimate with anyone.
He finished his tangent by pressing his face against your head. "I'm gonna miss you." He said into your hair, pressing a gentle kiss to the crown of your head.
His admission left a sinking feeling in your stomach. Had he really accepted that you were dying?
You shifted so that your eyes looked up to the bottom of his jaw. "You have no idea how much I love you." He murmured, and for a second you thought he had fallen asleep on your head, but he was just still, wishing this moment could last forever.
"I believe in love because of you." You felt another kiss to the top of your head. "What am I going to do when you're gone?"
You sat up a bit, so you could look him in the eye. "You are going to become the best swordsman in the world. Obviously. With or without me you are going to follow your dreams."
He took your face in his hands, carefully, like you were made of a fragile glass. It felt that way. He held you so gently he was scared you would break. "What do I do to make you stay?"
The question was strong. It wasn't a soft thought he spoke out loud just to say something, the musings of a grieving man. There was purpose behind it. He wanted an answer.
You shook your head instead, tears brimming in your eyes. "You can't. There's nothing."
His brow furrowed and you realized how serious he was. He would swim around the world if it would somehow cure you. He would do whatever you said even if it only gave you a few more days with him. You did not want him chasing a lost cause.
"Even if something could be done, it's too late." You leaned forward again, falling against him.
"Don't say that. You aren't dead yet. There has to be something." He insisted, sitting up straight, trying to keep you comfortable while he did so. "Zoro, stop it. There's nothing."
His eyes scanned your body as if there was a machine that could calculate a solution for him. His analysis turned up nothing. "I'll talk to the doctor."
You watched, half-formed protests dying in your throat as you spoke, as Zoro manoeuvred himself out of the bed, laying you down carefully, and deciding what to do next.
He walked towards the door and you said the only thing you could. "Roronoa Zoro." His full name made him stop. This could be the last time he heard you say it.
"Don't give up. I can help you. Let me help you." You shook your head. "This is the last resort." You touch your bandaged chest, where the magic keeping you alive slowly faded away.
"I survived." He pointed at his own scar, a dramatic line ripped across his chest. You wanted to agree, but you went through something different than he did. "The blade went straight through me. He barely missed my heart. I bled out." "You can heal." The desperation in his eyes shattered your heart. "They have a doctor here. Not a surgeon. They can't fix this. They can only sew it up and keep me alive as long as they can."
Zoro's head shot up. "You need a surgeon." His eyes practically ignited with hope. "Zoro." "I'll get you to a surgeon."
He leaned down, arms slipping behind your shoulders and under your knees, lifting you off the bed. "Zoro, put me down." You argued, doing nothing to get out of his grasp.
He hesitated for a second, your body laying the same way it had when you were dying less than a day ago. "You can't spend your last moments in here, waiting for it to end." He said sternly.
"Zoro." "One last trip." He insisted. "What's the worst that could happen?"
He knew that he had caught you in a corner, determination covering his features. "What if it doesn't work?" You asked, preparing him for the likely occurence. "Then I'll know I did everything I could to help you." He promised.
You said nothing in return, letting him help you up, and when your legs were too weak to help you walk, he swept you up, carrying you to the door, opening it to face your crew. At first, there was an oppressive silence, as if they had expected you to be dead.
"We're going to find a surgeon." Zoro insisted. There was no need for argument, the crew was more than ready to accommodate this detour.
There was a hurried walk to the ship, prepared to set sail as soon as possible, headed to a nearby island that boasted a city, surely there would be a surgeon there.
In the meantime, Zoro stayed with you. You were laid in a bed, offered many comforts, but it was evident that you were getting weaker. He sat next to you, one of your hands clasped in his for comfort.
You started the trip sitting up in bed, able to keep up with conversation, but soon there was a change. You were getting tired, and laid down.
Zoro stayed with you through it all, as the boat sped along the waves. As your eyes drifted closed, he urged you to stay awake.
You took one long blink and suddenly you moved, shifting under the blankets, lethargic movements that betrayed how little time you had left.
Zoro watched as you leaned up slightly against your pillow. "Zoro, if this doesn't work, I want to be buried at sea." Your voice was weak, but Zoro hung on to every word.
He wanted to interrupt and tell you that it was going to work, but he said nothing. He waited for you to finish. "Sail somewhere uncharted and leave my body to the sea. That way I'll always be with you. In the waters."
He looked up at you, the hand not holding yours went up to caress your face. He leaned in, pressing a kiss to your forehead. "Kiss my lips, idiot. " You mumbled. A smile brushed the edge of his mouth. He obliged you, and despite your tiredness, you looped your arms around his torso, tugging him in with what little strength you still had.
"Promise to bury me at sea?" You asked. "I promise." His voice was rough, tainted with emotion. "But it is going to work."
You smiled. "Of course it will."
Luffy came in to update you on the progress of your journey. Almost halfway there, by Nami's calculations.
You still did not expect to be alive by the time they docked, but that was a concern you would not voice.
As you were left alone again, you fought to stay awake. A losing battle. Zoro urged you to stay conscious, but it was getting harder and harder to do, fighting the urge to fall asleep, knowing it would be a rest you would never wake up from. He held your hand in his, his fingers carefully positioned over your pulse point, feeling the thrumming slow under his touch.
"Stay awake. You can do it."
You did your best, minutes feeling like hours as you struggled to stay awake.
When the boat docked, Zoro was already picking you up, running to find you the surgeon. He was not going to lose you. Not if he could help it.
The hospital was in sight when your eyes finally drifted closed, unable to hold them open for much longer.
"Stay awake." Zoro pleaded, shoving through the front doors.
"I need a surgeon!" He shouted, your weak body held against his chest, a haunting reminder of the day before.
When your body was pried from his arms a second time, an overwhelming emptiness filled him once more.
He spent every second questioning the staff of the hospital about your condition. Every answer was the same. Nobody knew what was going on.
Time passed as slowly as it could, and Zoro was restless. Any attempts to soothe him were ignored.
The only update he got was the doctors coming out, asking the strangest question he had ever been asked.
"Where did the heart go?"
Zoro was confused. Your heart was still in your body, it's processes aided significantly by the magic, but it was still there. It should have been.
"What?" He asked, confusion and anger bubbling in his chest. "The patient's heart is missing. It's been removed. Do you have the specimen?"
Zoro's world lurched as he put pieces together. The doctor looking upset at his insistence of being with you. The lack of a distinct heartbeat. The jar carried by the strangers. The way you confessed to feeling like you were hollow instead of in pain.
Those doctors had removed your heart. That was why you were "beyond saving". Because they had stolen one of your most vital organs.
It made no sense. Why would they do that? The fury raged on as Zoro's brain tried to think of any other explanation for what had happened. Your heart was missing from your chest cavity. Your heart.
His anger bubbled, swearing a lengthy and bloody revenge against whoever had removed your heart and all responsible for it.
Another doctor rushed towards the one interrogating Zoro, and with a jumble of words like compatibility, donor, and transplantation, they came to some sort of decision.
They left quickly, promising Zoro that they were going to try something risky, before rushing off with determination, leaving Zoro fuming and confused.
He stopped his harrassment of the staff briefly, finding the crew sitting nervously in a waiting room. Upon seeing him, they jumped up, but the look on his face startled them.
"What's wrong?" Nami dared to ask.
"Their heart was stolen." Zoro said, his words a long line of barely controlled anger, his body tense, ready to explode.
"Those fucking doctors took their heart out. It's gone."
Confusion spread across the crew, trying to understand what Zoro was saying. Surely he was joking. Your heart was not removed from your chest. There was no way.
There was no need to discuss the actions that would be taken wether or not you survived the procedure.
They were going back to that first island and Zoro was going to unleash absolute hell upon the doctors who had lied to him about trying to save your life.
Until then, the anxiety doubled, as more hours were spent hovering outside sterile doors, waiting for news that would either bring some semblance of normalcy to the world or tear it in half.
Finally, after a wait that spanned far too long, the doctors came out, looking shocked.
"Your friend survived the transplant. They're going to be okay." One of the doctors informed the crew. The excitement was palpable.
There was a cascade of cheers as the news was released, grinning faces and happy hearts. You were alive again.
Zor insisted upon waiting at your bedside, a looming, protective figure that barely softened his posture, even when your crew came in to see you.
He stayed by your side, day and night, asking the nurses about when you would wake up.
They said they didn't know. Only that you would.
Eventually.
Zoro spent his time with you by talking, remembering how you had helped bring him back from the brink of death.
Zoro clammed up the second somebody entered the room, but when it was empty he began to talk about anything and everything. Things he saw out your window, thoughts on the weather, complaints about whatever was on his mind. Anything and everything.
He made multiple apologies. For not helping you fight, for not finding this solution quicker, for not giving you a chance to end that bastard's life yourself, for letting those doctors steal your heart and replace it with a finite amount of magic. For everything.
His hand held yours, his fingers gently pressing your pulse point. He could feel the steady thrum of your new heart, weak as it was. It was still there. So were you.
One night, after having fallen asleep, slumped over in a metal hospital chair, his hand let go, and upon awaking, he scrambled to find your pulse, breathing a sigh of relief when he found it.
The torture stayed with him for three days, three whole days of waiting for you to come back, to fight against the odds and to prove how strong you truly were.
It was around lunchtime when you drew in a sharp breath, awakening to a stabbing pain in your lungs. Your eyelids fluttered, and a long, thin breath brought you back as you drowsily came to.
Zoro's heartrate doubled, a beacon of hope lit in his chest that burned brighter than the sun had ever been.
He felt your fingers twitch in his grasp, and your new heartbeat accelerated under his steady hold.
Your face pinched, contorted with pain, but Zoro was still just barely holding back tears. You were truly alive.
He spoke your name, a soft tone being taken on, one that had not been present during his ramblings to your unconscious body.
"Zoro?" Your voice was raspy, but there was nothing for him that could ruin the moment. "I'm here." He said carefully, hand moving to hold yours, squeezing it gently.
You squeezed back instinctively, laughing. "This probably isn't the afterlife then." You coughed and a wince ran through your body, followed by a sharp noise of pain. "Definitely not heaven."
"I'll get a doctor." Zoro said quickly, raising from his seat, rushing to proudly declare that you had bested the odds, and defeated death itself, not once, but twice.
"Zoro?" He hesitated, turning to look at you as you opened your eyes, blinking until he could come somewhat into focus. "Thank you."
Zoro had been accused of being an impulsive man, but he was sure of every thought that passed through his head before he rushed back to your side and kissed you.
His hands carefully caressed your face, the very hands that had bashed your killer's face into the ground and carried your limp body, the lips that had screamed at enemies and pleaded with so many nurses to tell him good news pressed against yours, losing himself in the familiarity of it. He had missed you so desperately.
You were still weak, but he could feel you reciprocating his action. "I love you." He repeated over and over again, eyes glazing over with tears. "I love you, I love you." Like a mantra.
When he slowed down, he saw your eyes drift behind him, where a surprised nurse was blushing at the scene in front of her.
"I'll get the doctors." She mumbled before scampering away, a giggle on her lips.
You were given a hefty painkiller, by doctors who still seemed unable to process that you had survived, but all the more happy for it.
The crew was permitted to see you, and whatever residing pain fighting your medicine was forgotten as Luffy's arms wrapped around you, stretched out long and encasing your body like spaghetti wrapped around a fork. He squeezed you tight as the rest of the group rushed in, drowning in relief and tears.
There was a group hug, which kept you warm and drowned out the fears you had and the weaknesses you felt.
They stayed with you, scattered around your ward, keeping you company, filling you in on the days you missed.
You sat up on your bed, cross legged, Zoro sitting behind you, holding you close against him as the crew talked around you. A game of cards had begun, and the sounds of uproaring laughter filled your ears and warmed your new beating heart.
You noticed the way Zoro held you. His arms were wrapped around you, your one arm crossed over yourself to hold his hand, the other hand taking care of the money you had won from the card game.
Zoro's fingers interlocked with yours, but his thumb strayed towards your wrist. It lay right across your pulse point, blood flowing through your body in rhythmic thumps, your heart doing its job enthusiastically.
His thumb pressed gently on the spot, feeling your pulse, as he did every second he spent at your side. He kept it there, making sure that you were still present. You are. You always will be.

Heart’s Duty
Prince!Sanji x Knight!reader
@queen-of-elves
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3
Tumblr media
You never imagined a life after being a knight. Always thought you’d die on the battlefield, or protecting the crown
You’d pictured it, bowing out heroically, sword  in hand and relief knowing you had taken care of your family, dying with a purpose.
“Well shit” —you carrying all your belongings trough the castle’s entrance was not part of that picture
Anxiety washes over you at the harsh realization that your old life awaits you, unchanged. It isn’t even clear to you if you’ll even walk into your home again, running away sounded more viable than having to build a sad explanation for you arriving in the middle of the busy morning.
You didn’t even bother saying goodbye to the prince… another sharp feeling hits you, this one’s different, almost regretful as you imagine Sanji without you. Who would stand up for him? Who would take him on his walks or test taste his amazing culinary creations?… who would be there for him like you always had, hell, who would be there for you?
You shake your head as you try and dissolve the feeling, you can’t think of the prince that way! He is destined to marry royalty and you? You were below no one. You were a coward that was running away from the consequences of her actions.
On the bright side, this was better than whatever hell was awaiting you inside that castle, and best believe hell was breaking loose.
Every server that has been lucky enough to tend to Prince Sanji would describe him as kind, caring and generous. But right now he was unrecognizable
Not in all his years has Sanji ever thrown a tantrum, so looking at a man from his status breaking furniture and cursing at every soul crossing his path was odd… and frightening
Marshal Zoro stands beside the room’s door, speechless as the prince unleashes his frustration, every curse on the book and some more being screamed into the thin walls, redness of frustration blooming on his skin
“Your highness, you need to calm down-“ Sanji’s breath was loud, it echoed through the room as he tried to find some semblance of control. He probably scared you off didn’t he? Dammit he should’ve been more careful with his words… what if he made you uncomfortable? Oh gods he wishes he didn’t he wouldn’t be able to live with himself
Marshal Zoro’s voice rings in his ears, he didn’t care to explain the situation to anyone he just knew he needed to find you, the thought of you walking alone around the kingdom’s streets without a thing to your name made him shiver, he should’ve known better
Every second spend spiraling is a chance to find you lost. He fixes his posture, standing tall with determination, his mind clears. He makes a bee line to the door, long strides across the room before a bulky hand makes him halt
“Your highness, you know we can’t allow you stepping outside the castle unprompted” Zoro´s tone would make anyone stop on their tracks, but not today, not when you are at stake
“You are dismissed” theres a finality on the prince’s demand, and certain haste that confuses Zoro further
Of course he doesn’t move an inch, eyes set straight forward while a silence settles uncomfortably
“I won’t repeat myself”
Something between Zoro wanted to answer that he in fact doesn’t follow his orders, he follows the king’s, but a glance at the prince’s eyes, and at the situation at hand makes him settle for another answer- “It would be better for our benefit if your highness shares whatever the trouble is rather than run away like a headless chicken” Underneath his condescence was genuine curiosity, Sanji battles with himself before he settles for backing away. For the record Sanji could tell the marshal what went down and the dangers that may ensue if he decides to stay, but he doesn’t, because he would never invade a lady’s privacy, ever
“Fine, I’ll stay”
Or did he?,
You see Sanji was no fool, he knew that Marshal Zoro was an important asset to his father, his position demanding long hours of work and dedication that would eventually draw him away for the task (him) that he was currently stuck in, so, ever the patient man, awaits the inevitable call from the squire to act his scape rather swiftly. Between change of positions between the marshal and whatever stupid knight assigned him was, Sanji scurries away unnoticed trough the castle’s window, even if it ended in him falling rather ungracefully on a rose bush.
Without missing any more time, he dodges guards and housekeepers with a practiced ease that you had mastered with the prince on the many times you allowed him to step outside the castle without permission, he finally makes it to the door.
The streets are bustling with vendors, eager shoppers and late breakfast, a warmth would usually fuel the prince at such display of his people enjoying their days, but right now he can only think of you. With nothing but the memory of your face he hopes to find you safe and sound, open to listen to his hearts desires  and ready to comeback to the castle where he can enjoy your company once again. He mingles between the people but it doesn’t take long for people’s head s to turn and whispers to fall behind his step. As he made a halt in front of a fruit stand to just politely ask the lady if he had seen someone with your description, someone’s shoulders makes him loose balance
“Well what do we have here!-”
Shit
“-what have we done to deserve the presence of our majesty?!” The bustle of the people quiets, and Sanji feels the spotlight blind his eyes, 3 men circle him, clearly bad intentions written all over them, he should’ve planned this through…
“Please!-“ he picks up his voice so that the people around can hear ”-don’t mind me, continue with your day!”
“Are you deaf? am I not deserving of your attention?” The same man that bumped into him strides forward, menacing as he tries to clearly break a fight; the prince remains calm, clearly not wanting a commotion that could draw the attention of the kingdoms patrol that could retrieve him back, not when he hadn’t even got a lead to your whereabouts. He steps backwards thinking of a response that could simmer the anger being directed his way but tumbles with another man behind him, cornering him immediately without a window to run.
Shit
Before the man can even lay a hand on the prince, a sharp sword flashes before his eyes and stops the pocket knife that he clearly had no clue the man had uncovered
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you” the sweet voice that reaches Sanji’s ears make him turn surely giving him whiplash
It’s you

roronoa zoro x gn!reader cw: fluff. giving zoro some much needed validation. established relationship wc: 3.2k an: it's been a while, hasn't it? ao3 link
Tumblr media
beneath the safety of a sea cave large enough to house the thousand sunny, the straw hat pirates dock on a modest island, its location far from the nearby village to remain unnoticed. the cavern’s towering rocky walls cast long shadows, shielding the crew from view, while the sea carries the scent of damp stone and salt, mingling with the faint echo of waves crashing against the it’s mouth.
eager to stretch their land legs, the crew wastes no time in disembarking. they split up almost immediately, each drawn to their own interests—some head to the market, some to the beach, and the rest scatter to explore the town’s hidden corners. zoro starts to wander off on his own, one hand lazily resting atop the swords at his side and his expression focused, but makes it no more than five feet away from the others before a hand gently wraps around his wrist, stopping him in his tracks.
“not so fast,” you say, touch still resting lightly on his arm as his gaze tilts down to meet yours. “where to? i’ll come with ya.” while your tone is light, it’s a firm one that leaves no room for argument—you're tagging along with him, though happy to let him lead the way, whatever that looks like.
zoro grumbles something about “not needing a babysitter”, but he doesn’t protest. instead he gestures vaguely toward the path ahead and starts walking, his pace slow to allow you to keep up.
the village is a vibrant mix of tropical greenery and a lively marketplace, its narrow streets bustling with midday activity. merchants call out to passersby, their stalls overflowing with colorful fruits, handmade trinkets, and the occasional exotic spice. the air is thick with fresh produce and salty sea breeze, joined by the sounds of the day-to-day clientele. it’s the kind of place that just feels alive, every corner teeming with energy and life.
he leads you through its winding roads, his sense of direction as unreliable as ever, but eventually, you reach a quiet spot near the edge of town where the bustling markets give way to dense forest. the clearing he finds seems perfect for training—shaded by tall trees, with enough room for him to swing his swords without worry.
silently, he shrugs off his green coat and tosses it in your direction, trusting you to catch it before unsheathing two of his three swords. he begins with a series of fluid, precise strikes, the blades cutting through the thin nothing with a whistle. even without anything to land blows upon, his focus is unwavering, his body moving with the kind of practiced ease that comes from years of discipline.
you settle nearby, draping his coat over your lap as you lean against a tree. the rhythmic sound of his movements blends with the distant hum of the town. for a moment, you wish you had brought a book along—something to pass the time while he trains. but then again, watching him isn’t exactly a hardship.
as the sun climbs higher in the sky, the watch on your wrist chimes softly, signaling that it’s time to regroup with the crew. you glance over at zoro, who’s mid-swing, his movements precise and his focus unshakable.
“time to head back for lunch,” you call out, holding up your wrist to show him the watch, though you know he doesn’t need proof. “unless you’d rather keep training?” you add, a teasing lilt to your tone.
zoro pauses mid-swing, his blades freezing as he turns to look at you. his brow furrows for a moment, and you can almost see the internal debate playing out in his head—training versus food. but then his stomach growls loudly, betraying him, and he lets out a grunt, sheathing his swords with a practiced flick of his wrists. “food first,” he mutters, wiping the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand. “i can come back to this.”
you can’t help but laugh, shaking your head as you stand to hand him his coat. “thought so.”
—--
the walk back into town is quiet, the two of you navigating the maze of streets side by side, your steps falling into an easy rhythm. the sound of laughter and clinking dishes spills out into the street as you push open the door of the tavern, and the warm, inviting atmosphere quickly envelops you. the rest of the crew is already gathered around a large table, their voices rising and falling in animated conversation.
the bar is lively and ripe with the clatter of dishes, the hum of conversation, and the occasional burst of laughter. zoro slides into a seat across from you, his swords propped against the wall beside him. he grabs a tankard of ale from a passing server, taking a long drink before setting it down with a satisfied sigh. you settle into your seat, your own drink in hand, content to listen to the chatter around you.
already halfway through a mountain of meat, luffy’s enthusiasm remains undiminished by the sheer volume of food in front of him while sanji flits between the table and the kitchen, much to the visible annoyance of the tavern staff. he’s not cooking this time, but that hasn’t stopped him from swooping in to carry plates to the table, adjust the presentation of dishes, and interrogate the chefs about their seasoning choices.
franky and robin are seated nearby, their heads bent together as they discuss something in hushed tones, though robin occasionally glances up to watch sanji’s antics with an amused smile.
the meal is in full swing, the table alive with chatter and clinking dishes, when nami’s voice cuts through the noise, sharp and pointed. “—and don’t think i’ve forgotten about the 10,000 berries you owe me, zoro,” she says, her tone dripping with mock sweetness as she leans forward, her eyes glinting with mischief. “you know, for that incident with my ledger last week.”
zoro, who had been mid-bite, sets his chopsticks down with a clink, his scowl deepening. “i already told you, i didn’t ruin your stupid ledger. you left it on the deck. that’s on you.”
nami’s eyes narrow, her smile turning dangerous. “oh, so it’s my fault you decided to drink like a maniac and spill sake all over it? typical.” she crosses her arms, leaning back in her chair. “face it, zoro. you’re just bad with anything that doesn’t involve swinging a sword or napping.”
zoro rolls his eyes, leaning back in his chair. “whatever, witch. just add it to my tab.”
sanji, who had been setting a plate of food in front of robin, immediately turns on zoro, his face red with anger. “don’t you dare call nami-swan a witch, you brute!”
zoro doesn’t even look at him, his tone dismissive. “shut the hell up, love-cook. no one even asked you.”
nami, seeing an opportunity to twist the knife, smirks and leans forward. “you sure you’re any better than he is, zoro? at least sanji’s obvious about it. you think we don’t notice how you act when someone’s around?” she tilts her head meaningfully in your direction, her grin widening. “you’re softer than a marshmallow, and it’s almost worse because you don’t even realize you’re doing it.”
the two burst into laughter, their voices ringing out above the noise of the tavern. the rest of the crew, engrossed in their own conversations, barely notice the exchange. zoro’s face darkens, his scowl deepening into a face of sudden rage as he slams his chopsticks down on the table.
he stands abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the wooden floor, and storms out of the tavern without another word. the table falls silent for a moment, the crew exchanging uneasy glances, before the chatter slowly resumes.
you scowl, pinching the bridge of your nose as you glance between them. “you three are going to be the fucking death of me,” you mutter, your voice low but strong enough to cut through their laughter. they pause, looking at you with a mix of amusement and guilt, but you don’t give them a chance to respond. pushing your chair back, you stand and follow zoro, ignoring the curious looks from the rest of the crew.
the cool afternoon air hits you as you step outside, and you scan the bustling street for any sign of zoro. it doesn’t take long to spot him—his green hair and imposing figure being hard to miss in a crowd. he’s already halfway down the street, his shoulders tense and his fists clenched at his sides.
you call out to him, quickening your pace to catch up. he doesn’t stop, but he doesn’t tell you to leave him alone either. you fall into step beside him, matching his long strides as he leads you toward the edge of town. the sounds of the port fade behind you, replaced by the rustle of leaves and the distant call of seabirds. you don’t say anything, giving him the space he needs, but your presence alone is a quiet reminder that you’re not going anywhere.
the two of you walk in silence until you reach a quiet spot near where the forest meets the sea, where the bustling streets give way to a small, secluded clearing. a large, flat rock sits nestled under the shade of a towering palm tree, and zoro heads straight for it, dropping onto the surface with a heavy sigh. you sit down beside him, close enough to offer comfort but not so close that it feels intrusive. for a while, neither of you speaks. the only sounds are the rustle of leaves in the breeze and the distant crash of waves against the shore.
zoro’s shoulders are still tense, his teeth clenching as he stares at the ground. you don’t push him, letting the silence stretch between you. finally, after what feels like an eternity, he huffs and runs a hand through his hair. “am i really like that?” he asks, his voice low and gruff, like the words are being dragged out of him against his will. he doesn’t look at you, but you can hear the frustration in his tone. “do i really… act different when you’re around?”
you glance at him, surprised by the vulnerability in his question. “different how?” you ask gently, giving him the space and time to explain himself.
he hesitates, brow furrowing as he struggles to find the right words. “i don’t know. softer. like i’m… like i’m not as strong as i should be.” his voice trails off, and he clenches his fists, clearly frustrated with himself. “i don’t want to be seen as weak. i can’t afford to be weak. not when i’ve got a promise to keep.”
you frown, turning to face him fully. “caring about someone doesn’t make you weak.” you reach out, brushing your fingers lightly against the back of his hand, a small but deliberate gesture to ground him. “it just makes you human, and i think it’s a sign of strength to realize that being human can be a boon.”
you let the words hang for a moment, watching as his mouth tightens and his gaze flickers to yours before looking away again. “and who cares what they think anyway?” you add, your tone condensed but not unkind. “they're just trying to get under your skin. they don’t get to decide what you are or aren’t.”
he doesn’t respond right away, his gaze fixed on the ground. you can see the conflict in his expression, watching as he wrestles with his thoughts. finally, he lets out a frustrated breath and shakes his head.
“but i don’t even know how to be a… a—” he pauses, and you can hear him swallow hard, like the words are stuck in his throat. “—whatever this is,” he finishes, gesturing vaguely between the two of you. his voice is quieter now, almost uncertain.
you tilt your head, studying him carefully. “what do you want it to be?” you ask, your voice soft but steady. “this thing between us—it doesn’t have to fit into some box. we get to decide what it means.”
zoro lets out an intense exhale, his shoulders slumping slightly as he leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “that’s the problem. i don’t know what it means. i don’t even know how to—” he cuts himself off, his jaw tightening as he struggles to articulate his thoughts. “i’ve never had to think about this kind of stuff before. it’s… hard.”
you smile faintly, your hand still resting lightly against his. “you don’t have to have all the answers right now. but you can’t just ignore it, either. not if it’s bothering you this much.”
he looks at you then, his gaze searching yours for a moment before he looks away again. “it’s just—,” he mutters, but there’s no real bite to his words. “i don’t want to mess this up.”
“you won’t,” you say simply, your voice firm. “not if you’re honest with yourself.”
zoro is quiet for a long moment, his fingers flexing against the rock beneath him. the silence between you is comfortable, though, and you don’t push him to fill it. instead, you sit there beside him, your presence a quiet reminder that you’re not going anywhere. eventually, he lets out a slow breath, his shoulders relaxing slightly.
“i’ll figure it out,” he says finally, his voice low but resolute. “just… give me some time.”
you nod, squeezing his hand lightly before pulling away. “take all the time you need. i’m not going anywhere.”
he glances at you then, his expression softening just enough for you to notice. “you’re stubborn, you know that?” he says, his tone dry but with a hint of amusement.
you grin, leaning back on your hands. “takes one to know one.”
zoro huffs out a laugh, the sound rough but genuine, and for the first time since you left the tavern, the tension in his shoulders seems to ease. the two of you sit there in silence for a while longer, the weight of his unspoken thoughts hanging in the air. but for now, it’s enough just to be there with him, offering the quiet reassurance he needs.
—--
a week and a half passes, and they find themselves hastily docking at another island to allow franky to work his magic on the patch-job after an unexpected storm damages part of the thousand sunny’s rigging, a few insist on taking the opportunity to top off their stores and supply.
in the days since your conversation with zoro, things between you have remained the same—comfortable, familiar, and unspoken. he hasn’t pulled away or acted differently, and neither have you. if anything, there’s a quiet understanding between you now, a sense of patience as he works through his thoughts.
the ship is quiet with most of the crew either asleep or still in the village, enjoying the island’s nightlife. you’re on your way back to your room after helping sanji organize the pantry when you pass by zoro’s door. just as you’re about to walk past, the door slides open, and a strong hand grabs your shoulder, pulling you inside before you can react.
“zoro—?” you start, but the words are cut off as he pulls you into a tight bear hug, his arms wrapping around you with a firmness that leaves no room for escape. you can feel the warmth of his chest against yours, the steady rise and fall of his breathing, and the faint scent of steel and sweat that always seems to cling to him.
you don’t hesitate, wrapping your arms around him in return and hugging him just as tightly. you know better than to question when zoro initiates physical affection. instead, you let the silence speak for itself, the quiet understanding between you filling the room.
“zoro?” you ask again, your voice muffled against his shoulder. “you okay?”
he doesn’t answer right away, just holds you there for a moment, his grip unyielding but not uncomfortable. finally, he lets out a quiet breath, his voice low and rough. “yeah. just… happy you’re here.”
after a moment, he loosens his grip slightly but doesn’t let go. you can feel the tension in his shoulders, the way he’s still wrestling with something he can’t quite put into words.
“i’m happy too,” you murmur, your thumb brushing lightly over his cheek before cupping it in your palm gently. zoro leans into the touch almost unintentionally, his features softening under your hand. “really happy.”
zoro’s brow furrows slightly, but he doesn’t pull away. instead, his hands rest loosely on your hips. “happy, huh?” he asks like he’s still trying to wrap his head around the idea.
“yeah,” you say softly, your voice steady and sure. “being here with you, like this… it means a lot to me. more than i can really put into words.”
he looks at you for a long moment, his gaze searching yours as if looking for confirmation. you can see the conflict in his eyes, the way he’s still trying to reconcile his feelings with the image he’s always had of himself. but then, slowly, his expression softens, and he lets out a quiet breath, his shoulders relaxing under your touch.
“you make it sound so simple,” he mutters, his tone dry but without any real bite.
“because it doesn’t have to be complicated,” you reply, smiling faintly. “whatever this is,” you add, waving a hand in the space between the two of you.
zoro looks at you for a long moment, his hands tightening slightly on your hips while a grin plays at the corners of his lips. then, without a word, he leans down, closing the distance between you. his lips meet yours in a kiss that’s soft, deliberate, and a quiet affirmation of everything he hasn’t been able to say. you kiss him back without hesitation, your fingers sliding into his hair as you pull him closer.
the kiss is tender, unhurried, and full of the understanding that’s always been between you. it’s not the first time you’ve kissed him, but it feels different this time—deeper, more intentional. like he’s finally letting himself be fully present in the moment, without the walls he usually keeps up.
when you finally pull back, zoro rests his forehead against yours, his breathing slow and steady. “you’re a pain in the ass, you know that?” he says, unable to hide his fondness.
you laugh softly, your hands still resting against his face. “takes one to know one.”
he huffs out a quiet laugh, his arms tightening around you as he pulls you into another hug. this one is less intense than the first, but no less meaningful. you can feel the tension in his shoulders easing, the way he’s finally starting to let go of the weight he’s been carrying.
for a moment, the two of you simply stand there, wrapped in each other’s arms, the quiet of the room wrapping around you like a blanket. but then zoro shifts, his hands sliding up to cradle your face as he leans in again, his lips brushing against yours in a kiss that’s softer, deeper, and far more confident than before. this time, there’s no hesitation, no unspoken question hanging between you—just the quiet certainty that this is where you’re both meant to be.

Heart´s Duty
Prince!Sanji x Knight!reader
@crabdictarorship @secretlife028 @i-trash-about-things
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3
Tumblr media
Trough out your life as a knight you had never wavered, or even feared any situation you had to face… until now
After accidentally revealing your biggest secret to the prince, you feel like the ground you stand on shakes, not a single feeling or thought being processed behind your worried eyes. What was to become of you? Dismissed?, Killed? Or worse A MAID?
As you try and catch your breath, you decide to make a run to your quarters to scape the inevitable at least until morning.
Prince!Sanji on the other hand, after finally coming to terms with what he had just witnessed, finds himself feeling a little disappointed when he opens the terrace door to find you gone.
That night he doesn’t sleep a blink, tossing and turning as he finds a window to the why of your behavior and character, he feels like he just opened his eyes to a whole new world. Your muteness, your monthly absences, why you were so damn short; but most importantly, the care and warmth you bestowed upon him.
All the men Sanji had been surrounded with his whole life had been nothing far from cruel and unforgiving of who he was, the only ones that had showed him kindness and acceptance were women, because of that he had developed an admiration and genuine devotion for the ones that he found on his lonely path as a prince; from his sister, his late queen, even the maids and the magnificent cooks on the royal kitchen that always taught him whatever piked his interest, opening a world of opportunities for him.
And you, the person that not only genuinely actively cared about him but went the extra mile to fight for him every single day, shielding him in situations he could not. Your unspoken understanding, soft care and charm that made his days go form tolerable to enjoyable. You the most beautiful woman he could’ve dreamed of, because you were way above his dream girl; you were real
The last time he felt this giddy he was merely a little boy on his birthday morning
You were restless too, but in fear as you dreaded the morning approaching
So imagine the prince’s distress when he didn’t see you outside his room the next morning, or at breakfast… or at his morning stroll, not even at tea
“I am the prince, I shouldn’t we fighting to know where someone of my court is” Sanji asked the assigned royal guard that so happened to be the infamous and very stubborn Zoro Roronoa, the marshal of the royal army who was as disgusted by the situation as much as the prince was, he had a million tasks to get to but here he was, diminished to such a trivial task
“With the outmost respect your highness, I do not know who are you referring to”
Now the prince finds himself facing yet another conundrum, Sanji didn’t knew your name
Not even the fake one… because you were mute
“The knight that is always assigned to me! Gods how aren’t you aware of where your own soldiers are!” He screams throwing his hands in the air, almost looking like a child who was denied a cookie after dinner
Marshal Zoro can only sigh, jaw tightening “I am not in charge of assigning roles around here… If he’s so important to you why don’t you know his name anyway-”
Sanji glares daggers back
-“S-sir”
“Sh-… He is mute”
A silence falls, desperate from the prince side but eye opening from the army’s marshal
“OOoh you mean pebble?”
More silence
“Pebble?”
“Yea, because he’s so short… and never takes the helmet off so he looks like a little pebble” a hearty laugh escaped the green haired marshal “Yeah saw him this morning, I believe he called in sick or something”
After much back and forth fighting, Sanji was able to convive marshal Zoro to take him down to your quarters to check on you
So there he was
The Prince of The North Region walking down the army’s quarters, marshal Zoro in tow. To say every soldier was expecting something really bad to go down at your quarters was an understatement
Finally he arrives to your door, but finds himself glued to the ground as an strange feeling forms in the pit of his stomach, suddenly it dawns on him what he was about to do
What in the world was he even going to say to you? He had a million questions, an itch to get to actually know more of you, the you you had to hide underneath an armor; and he would never dare to overwhelm you or appear like a a freak
Zoro clicked his tongue, already on his last straw before walking forward and unlocking your door cursing under his breath
“Wait!! What are you do-“
The prince’s worries would only multiply when the door open to reveal an emptied out room
You were gone.
He rushes in to a room that did not looked lived in as it was supposed to, more importantly not you in sight; you ran away
“The hell” Zoro mumbles sharing Sanji’s disbelief, what could possibly could be happening? and oh boy rumors do fly around the castle, especially with all the soldiers standing outside the scene
Is in moments like these that the prince realizes the walls of the castle are too high, finding himself acting selfishly. Sanji had never stopped to consider the actual enormity of the situation, what felt like a gift from the gods to him… to you could’ve felt like doomsday
“FUCK” Sanji cursed as he kicked the door breaking it in half, the possibility of having lost you forever shaking him to his core
The Marshall stood silently in pure confusion and shock between the prince and the crowd, what could’ve ever happened between you and the prince to deserve such a reaction
“Your majesty we need to retrieve”
Oh yes he needed to leave immediately, to look for you as fast as possible

Heart´s Duty
or... Ok but Prince!Sanji not aware that his knight is in fact a woman?
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3
Tumblr media
Reader!knight, the first born of her family and a woman struggling to help her family financially because a woman having a job was not accepted, so what did she do? Lied to her family saying she got a job overseas, stole an armor and a sword and joined the kingdoms army.
Turns out you were exceptionally good at the job and got promoted from a simple squire to the prince personal royal guard
And Sanji loathed it, he hated being followed around and observed by his dad’s little helpers
He felt judged
At least that was for a while until he eased into your presence, even though you didn’t speak (rumor had rolled around you took an oath to never speak until reaching the higher rank, of course that’s not the case you were trying to blend in) you always felt warm, and understanding
You allowed Sanji to do things that normally he wasn’t allowed to do; like helping in the kitchen or stroll around the perimeters of the royal garden and sometimes even go out of the walls of the castle to buy and enjoy whatever he pleased.
You knew a lot of the restrictions the king had on Sanji were either just petty or in all honesty cruel, so as long as he was safe, you didn’t step in
And of course Sanji appreciated it, pouting and sighing loudly when sometimes they swapped you for the day either because of sickness or “family business”
And you also became fond of the prince’s company, you found out Sanji was extremely caring, strong willed and empathetic; qualities his brothers lacked. Sanji’s love for cooking and adventure shaped him into a proper young man, sometimes even fearing what his family may do to him one day you aren’t around to protect him, because between the castle’s walls was were the actual danger lurked.
You had experienced it with your own eyes, how he was degraded by his own blood, hated for having an actual human heart beating under his ribs. Maybe that’s why you ended up bonding with the prince, you never allowed anyone to step on him.
He would thank you from the bottom of his heart but adverted his gaze feeling humiliated, and there was just so much you could do being mute
Slowly Sanji opened the doors of his troubled mind to you, finding you were the only person around in his life he could actually confide in and trust, after all, you put your life in the line everyday for him
You went for being a burden, to a dear friend of his; you didn’t just hover over his presence anymore, you shared space and sympathy
And of course you fell head over heels for the prince. How could you not to? You were allowed into the deepest crevices of his mind and soul, laying his heart bear for you to protect. He didn’t view you as just another pawn on the royal army, for Sanji you had feelings, opinions and desires, you were allowed to be human around him, and he was just oh so sweet and handsome
But you felt everything falling apart when one day you saw him almost trip and fall on the terrace of the castle after getting a little tipsy. You ran as fast as you could and catched him, in your fast movements your helmet fell to the ground, revealing your real identity to the prince
Both of you stood frozen, your heart in your throat as you feared for not only your future, but your life
“Your highness” the words fall out of your lips like butter, a shiver running down Sanji’s spine being able to hear your voice for the first time in years, now painted with your very afraid but beautiful face inches before his
“You’re-“ Sanji is in a trance, eyes committing your face to memory as they travel all around it. Big doe eyes sparkling up to him, lips so kissable and skin soft beneath his palms he bets “-beautiful”
Before the red travels to your cheeks you duck and gather your helmet before hastily putting it in and rushing out the terrace. Your heart beats loudly in your ears as you stand outside cursing to yourself for not being more careful, after all this years keeping the secret you screwed up big time
Sanji on the other side of the big door just remains transfixed, from a million questions he should be wondering your presence remains on his thoughts. He swears he had never ever lay eyes on someone as beautiful as you before, not even the most perfect princesses his father had before made travel overseas to try and marry him could compare to you, and your voice? Oh gods above. He would not get you out of his head.
Nor out of his sight

Zoro fluffy Drabble I found in my notes
Tumblr media
“It’s so unreal to want something so badly and actually get to have it”
The words slip out of your mouth with ease, yet silently, almost meekly and Zoro just stares in absolute awe and confusion
Why would you ever want him?
His callouses crashing into your soft skin, eyes that reflected the night sky fall on him as a shiver runs up and down his broad back. He wonders, but an answer never crosses his mind or lips, he keeps staring wondering if you’ll have it
A shy smile breaks into your face and it has Zoro gasping for hair, the warmth that so naturally exudes from you a total opposite from the coldness of his blades, his so equally cold gaze melting under yours
At last, your eyes advert when you get no answer from the swordsman and he gravitates back onto earth
A silence stretched and for the first time between both of you, it itches
“I never imagined not ever having you”
Another smile breaks, this one a little different form the other one, this one’s teasing
“Of course someone as brooding as you wouldn’t think of it that way”- you laugh and Zoro swears he just leapt around the deck “but I’ve spend a good amount of my life yearning too much”
Zoro finds himself spacing out while staring at you once again, because it’s just so unnamable, for you to long from afar when his heart layes between your fingers. But then again, he just unceremoniously gave it for you to hold without permission.
The sea breeze blows his insecurity, armor falling from around his rough exterior gifting you his bare self. Zoro was the kind of guy to experience a thousand storms raining down inside of his head but never show it, his serious and determined gaze never faltering, so it scares you a little when you see it soften; but not like you usually see it softened around you, this one’s different. You see a vulnerability glazed with something you cannot quite name, a lazy smile curving on his chapped lips and a long dreamy sigh escaping form his nose that envelopes you.
“What a dumb thing to do”
You swat his chest, but there’s no bite behind your action, only shyness. It was like looking directly into the sun, Zoro’s vulnerability was shaking, that’s why he dressed it behind this kind of comments to lighten the feeling, even if it was all consuming.
What he communicated to you was ( What a dumb thing to do, when you had me at your mercy all along).
So your cheeks turn red and you hide behind your giggles and his bulky arm, hanging tight in fear this would all be a dream an he’ll disappear leaving you to wake up alone in your old sad life before becoming a pirate.
“Yeah, specially when I’ve always been yours too”

i don't mind, i will do this dance for the rest of my life.
reader is sick and oh Law is a doctor yay! Law x gn!reader, kinda sickfic, FLUFF SO MUCH FLUFF AND BANTER
cw: reader has a cold, talk of medication and symptoms, nothing graphic
title from song "no big deal (i love you)" by dodie
Tumblr media
It was a late evening on the Polar Tang.
You were lying in the captain's quarters, more specifically in the captain's bed.
You'd been sick for about a week and a half now, getting better slowly under the watchful eye of your partner/doctor/captain.
Yet, a terrible ache in your throat persisted, paired with a nasty cough and a runny nose.
At first you didn't whine about it, didn't even complain really. It was just something that happened from time to time, you knew that.
But that was more than a week ago.
Being sick made you feel isolated. Having stared at the same four walls all week, you had memorised every gap, every little cobweb and the order of all the trinkets on the shelves.
You missed the other crew members, your friends. You missed having social interactions, having meals together, just laughing with someone.
Sure they had visited, but it was a poor excuse for the real thing.
Hell, you even missed Law.
You didn't see him during the day because he had to take care of the crew and the ship. At night he would go and sleep on the couch in the library (at least that's what he said, you knew for a fact that his head and the couch cushions had definitely never made contact) so he wouldn't get sick too.
The only time you saw him was in the mornings and now, late in the evening, when he came to check up on you.
"How's my favourite patient?" Law asked closing the door behind him.
"I'm also your only patient," you managed to croak, watching as he shrugged out of his coat.
"Isn't that weird for a doctor? Having only one patient? Makes you wonder what happened to all the other ones."
"They got better," he threw the coat over his office chair and walked over to the bed, leaning on it with both arms to look down at you, "or they didn't."
His cool palm pressed against your forehead for a quick temperature check, finding nothing out of the ordinary. Then his head dipped down and his fingers were replaced by his lips, a soft kiss placed on your hairline.
"Hi," you mumbled.
"Hi. You idiot."
"Hey, that's no way to talk to someone who's sick and probably dying."
He snorted.
"You're not dying any time soon. People on the verge of death don't complain this much."
"I'm managing to do that even though my throat is on fire, I think I should be given an award or something."
"Have you ever thought that there might be a causality between those two things?"
"Are you telling me to shut up?"
"As your doctor? Yes."
"Ugh."
Law only grinned at you, eyeing you from head to toe, swaddled in his blankets.
"No, seriously. How is it today?"
"Same old. A little better than yesterday but my throat is still killing me."
"The cough?"
"Still there. A little less."
"Okay. Temperature is fine. I think the worst of it is over."
"You didn't even use Kikoku to check," you said with a pout. Law gave you an incredulous look.
"I think I'm very capable of handling a cold by myself, thank you."
"But I like the sword."
"You have a strange obsession with that thing. I would have accredited it to you being sick and out of your mind but I just checked your temperature so I know you don't have a fever."
Your eyes narrowed at him."You're very mean today."
"Your own fault, you're sick and now everyone is bothering me."
"You do realise you're the captain right? I think that's normal."
"Yeah, but they keep asking me how you are and when you'll be back, as if they couldn't just come here and ask you that themselves."
"Right, how should you know? It's not as if you were a doctor or something."
Law scoffed, poking you in the side and you squeeled, trying to wiggle away from him while giggling. Which, of course, promptly caused you to have a coughing fit.
Immediatly curling in on yourself, head burying into your elbow, you waited for the itch in your throat to finally subside. Every cough like sandpaper on the raw skin in your throat, wracking your body.
Fucking hell it was like you'd swallowed hot coals or something.
Law was petting your head softly, fingers pressing into your scalp in a soothing rythm until your coughing stopped.
Eyes still closed from the exhaustion, you only heard as he strode over to his desk and started fiddling with something.
He came back just a second later.
"Sit up for me and take some of this. I would have brought you some more tea but we ran out of the reindeers mixture."
You'd been drinking tea that had been a gift from Chopper, a wonderfully soothing blend of herbs that had helped you through the worst of your cold. You would have to call him and ask if he could send more. Maybe even give Law the recipe.
Slowly you got up and took the silver spoon that was held out to you. It was filled with a very suspicious looking green, syrup-y liquid, which you probably didn't even want to know the exact contents of. You eyed it warily.
The look on your face must have shown your apprehension because you heard Law sigh next to you.
"It's not that bad. I put some extra sugar in it to make it sweet for you."
Warmth tingled in your chest as you glanced at him. He only nodded at the spoon.
You bit the bullet and without further hesitation swallowed the stuff in a quick motion, sweetness indeed hitting your taste buds almost immediately. Besides that it just tasted faintly like...earth? Herbal, definitely. Some mint in there as well.
"Damn, it's really not bad." You said, staring at the now empty spoon before Law took it from you and motioned for you to lay back down. "I told you." He replied and with a little smirk he added, "So dramatic."
"Mmmmm. Leave me alone." You rearranged the blankets and pillows around you (Law's technically but since you had bought them for him, yours by extension).
"Did you eat anything today?"
Law was filling the glas on your (his) bedside table with fresh water.
"Yeah, Ikakku brought me some soup earlier."
"Good."
He sat down on the bed then, his back to you, stretching every which way, before pulling his shirt over his head swapping it for a soft grey one that he always wore to sleep.
"Give me that...", you pointed towards his discarded shirt.
"It smells more like herbs than me."
"I don't care."
You took it from him, pulling it beneath the blanket and close to your chest. You'd bury your face in it later when he was gone for the night.
"Is that stuff you mixed the same stuff you gave Shachi when he was sick a month ago? Because he said you gave him something and it made him wanna puke."
He looked over his shoulder down at you, sly look dancing in his eyes.
"I might have reworked the recipe a little bit for you."
You couldn't help but grin at him.
"Awww. I knew sleeping with the doctor would get me special treatment."
"Are you implying you seduced me? And only for your own benefit? That's cold. I thought you liked me for me." He replied, tone dry but the tiny smirk unmistakable.
"Well, yes. I even like like you. I also like sleeping in your bed though. And having you fuss over me."
"You like my fussing now, believe me you don't wanna see me when I'm actually worried. Bepo says I'm scary."
You hummed.
"I believe that. But having you close can't ever be a bad thing. Not to me."
Law felt a rumble in his chest at the casual declaration.
"Because you like like me."
"Because I like like you, yes. Do you?"
"What like like you?" He couldn't help but be an ass. "Unfortunately, yes."
You took it in stride.
"Pfff. I'm the best thing that ever happened to you."
Well, he couldn't just agree with that, it would go straight to your ego.
"You're in the top five."
He heard you scoff. It was quiet for a moment as he looked over the pills on the bedside table.
"Top three?" You prompted, peeking out from under the blanket you had just pulled over your head.
He grinned at your eager look, heartbeat fast and light. "Maybe."
"Ugh. I guess I can live with that." You sighed and buried your face in your (Law's) pillow.
You felt the warmth of his hand on your head again, stroking and drawing patterns. Law knew he needed to stop touching you. He couldn't afford getting sick.
His hand didn't move from your skin.
"Can we go on vacation when I'm okay again? Or a daytrip? I need to reaffirm that you know how good I can be to you."
"You're really after that number one spot, huh?"
Your voice was muffled from your face being pressed into grey fabric.
"Well, I've always been a little greedy. Especially when it comes to you."
Before he could think better of it, Law leaned over to kiss your temple. Then he got up and collected Kikoku and a couple of books from his desk.
"I'll leave the door open a little, okay?"
You looked at him, half asleep again already and hummed in approval.
"And you are, by the way," he said softly, before he left the room, "number one."
You smiled at him.
"Night, Law."
"Stop talking and sleep."
"Okay mom."
You listened to his retreating steps down the hallway, nose pressed into his shirt.
You couldn't wait until you got better.
Missing him was the worst.
