It actually makes me really sad that understanding is not the goal of more protagonist/antagonist ships.
#‘they need to fix each other!’ okay do they want a relationship or a monument to their ego?#so many other tropes rely on one of them bowing or shrinking for the other#being ‘just as bad as each other’ is often flattened into the singular relationship trait#with nothing built on or into it to make it deeper or more appealing#and I wish the goal of these ships wasn’t ‘fulfill a trope!’#but was actually about building and bridging a depth between the characters to explore them in new and interesting ways#understanding can also be cathartic! understanding can also be metamorphosis!#it can also make them so much worse or better depending on how you use it!#okay that was my soapbox moment for the day cheers

#Fable#neither actually#now I'm no expert (because I ship Reaver/HoBW and not really spreaver and it's been a while) BUT#I think Reaver is impossibly broken and anyone who was paired with him would need their own broken edges to align with his#BUT (again) it's a moot point unless Reaver can learn to appreciate that person AS a person#because that's one of his biggest problems: no one else exists as a real person to him#no one else is worthy of his time or attention or care#it's not a 'fixing' he requires but someone who can earn his respect and force him to acknowledge that they're also a real person#it's a 'we're the only people who understand each other and no one else exists outside of us' thing#there's no fixing or matching each other just understanding and all the horror that implies
