Hi,
It’s your friendly neighbor fanfic author here. In the light of this apparent new trend of people feeding unfinished fics to AI to get an “ending,” and some people even talking about “blanket permissions,” let me just say this:
I EXPLICITLY FORBID ANYONE TO FEED MY FICS TO AI. DUDE, THAT IS ABOUT THE LEAST RESPECTFUL THING YOU CAN DO. IF YOU DO IT, SHALL YOU BE EXCOMMUNICATED FROM YOUR FANDOM AND WALK ON LEGOS BAREFOOT TILL THE END OF DAYS.
That is my anti-permission.
Thank you for your attention.

⚠️ Fandom is Moving Forward with Generative AI ⚠️
Tumblr media
As of December 15, Fandom has announced their plans to continue using AI to "enhance" their articles.
In short, they claim to have primarily used AI to
Scan images for "appropriateness" (be that NSFW content or just fitting in with the theme of the show), which still involves scraping tons of images and comparing them to a potentially unethically sourced database. As with all machine learning using images, it is still wildly inaccurate.
Optimizing edits - something they admit is still severely lacking because it can't read tables or variants on simple things like "birthday"
Optimizing SEO - this is clearly what they care most about, since Google likes the "Quick Answers" - as shitty as they were - this means they can continue to dominate the search results and gain more ad revenue.
This is a good time to remember that Fandom is a for-profit company with inverstors, which means their end goal is always to make the most money possible. They don't care about "The Fans" (despite the lip service), and they don't care about the authenticity of user-generated content if they can figure out how to automate the process.
STOP USING FANDOM.
Alternatives/Workarounds:
Indie Wiki Buddy is an extension that will redirect you to non-Fandom versions of wikis if it's in their database.
BreezeWiki displays all Fandom wikis in a clean, ad-free format with just the article content (no links to their forums, autoplay videos, etc)
If you must use Fandom, install UBlock Origin. It's available on all desktop browsers and Firefox Mobile. Hit them where it hurts. And encourage the wiki teams to leave Fandom if they can.
Also, be sure to support independent wikis! You can disable adblockers while on their sites, as they usually have much less obtrusive ads which directly fund server maintenance rather than CEO salaries. Change links on your posts/pages to direct to non-Fandom Wikis (even wiki.gg is better).
Keep information free from corporatization.

I love it when anons/guests find my works and kudo/leave reviews, but given the new revelation that Elon Musk is using bots to mine AO3 fanfiction for a writing AI without writer's permission, my works are now archive-locked and only available for people with an AO3 account.

The Glaze Team at University of Chicago is conducting a survey which evaluates the ability of artists and software to distinguish between AI generated images and human made artwork
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Survey link here!
spread the word!
EDIT: As some users have already pointed out in the tags, opening the images in new tabs to zoom in will reveal whether they're real or AI generated in the URL. Proceed with caution. If you accidentally spoiled yourself just say you've seen the image before and move on to a new one.
EDIT 2: Reblogs have been disabled as the survey has ended.

Dunno if anyone's mentioned this yet, but I found a site where you can drop images to check whether they're AI generated or not and it will give you a percentage of how likely something is to be a machine generated imagine, or machine scraped text.
(images I knew for a fact were not machine generated because they predate it)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Images I know were machine generated because they were marked as such on a booru)

This morning I learned there is now such a thing as online courses for "writing using AI" and I swear I felt physically nauseated (and frankly, a little violent). What in the seven hells is this dystopian *bleep*?!
I'm not anti-technology and AI has its uses (esp. since my job is tech-related), but AI has no place in the HUMANITIES.
I foresee the book publishing world becoming so bad in the near future, that I will be stuck reading the only things that are reliably AI-free: the classics (or anything pre-2000s), and fics/fanfics of friends whom I know hate this as much as I do.
I try to avoid even discussing controversial or negative topics on my blog, but this goes to show you how much I truly hate this and I just need to vent.
Putting some screenshots on here because I don't want to promote this crock other than to remind people this is why you need to please be mindful of your AI usage.

HEY FOLKS i highly doubt anyone on my flist follows me from my ffnet days but HERE IS AN ANNOUNCEMENT:
I WILL BE REMOVING ALL FICS FROM MY FFNET PAGE AS A PRECAUTION.
NOTHING about this latest trend in scooping fanfics and uploading them to ChatGPT is something i am comfortable with. I think it’s disgusting and disrespectful tbqh. i don’t want corps to do it and i definitely don’t want private folks to be doing it either. WHICH MEANS: since i can’t lock my ffnet account to registered users only, ALL THOSE FICS WILL BE CROSSPOSTED TO AO3 and then REMOVED FROM FFNET.
i am sorry if this is inconvenient. i am protecting the stories i have literally sweat and cried over, for more than a decade of my life. if you don’t respect me enough as an author to be able to understand why i’m doing this, then kindly get the fuck off my page.

I feel like AI bros are the same as conspiracy bros in that they're highly insecure and want to be perceived better than they perceive themselves. They hate intellectual conversations because they cannot keep up with them. They hate artists because they cannot make their own art. It takes work to be smart and it takes work to make art, but they don't want to put in that work. They just want to be able to say they created something. It must be depressing to think like that.

For once on this blog, not a bird nor wildlife, but a word.
I do not want my pics to be used for AI.
And I'm sure, you don't want your art, pictures and your posts and reblogs' contents to be used for AI as well. What good would be our blogs if anyone could make our content with AI, really? Better leave the Internet for good and forge counterfeit wildlife pics on AI at this point, right?🙄
No. We want to enjoy the pics other people take the time to go outside for, and sort from hundreds of pics, and post here for people to enjoy. Those pics are memories, pieces of life of the wildlife and their photographers. Nothing a machine could ever come close to replicate.
Other photographers may have better cameras, more experience than I, and it's fine. Their pics, my pics, we're making art that we like. That you like too, otherwise you wouldn't be here following our blogs. That's the real art that matters.
So, while I'm fairly certain you've seen other tutorials before, a reminder to go in your settings and TURN ON the visibility setting that would otherwise allow Tumblr to share your blog's content with Tumblr partners, including those training AI models.
It's simple: log in on your computer (we don't have this setting on mobile yet), and on the right of your screen, get to the Blog settings:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, scroll down to the Visibility section and look for the "Prevent third-party sharing for [your blog's name]". It's turned off. TURN IT ON to protect your blog, and the reblogs you do from other blogs.
You have to do this on every single one of your blogs. And please even if you yourself don't post much, as long as you reblog, you let the 3rd party get access to content the OP wanted to protect, so by protecting even reblogs-only blogs, you'll do us a big favor!
Some of the details may not be 100% known for now, but understand that in this, we're all better safe than sorry.
Every content creator and blog owner in general will thank you for doing that! 🙏
Oh, and a note that if you come to me to defend AI, I will block your blog 🙂

Anyway if y’all wanna be EVEN MORE MAD about how people are abusing AI for their benefit at the expense of other people, this time including children, I highly recommend you listen to the two (as of this post, they’re the most recent) episodes of Behind the Bastards titled “AI Is Coming For Your Children.” (From omny.fm: Part 1 / Part 2) Or, if you’re more of a reader, you can read the article version of it on Robert Evans’ substack:
This sucks so bad. Like, this shit is bleak. Add in the book bans people are trying to push out and… I dunno, seems like a recipe for disaster to me.

Bruh the fact that anon still sent that ask about C.AI even after you'd made your stance on AI perfectly clear? Wildly entitled behaviour in the askbox today omfg. It just saddens me so much that the ART of writing has been reduced down to nothing more than "content" people "deserve" to be given for free precisely when they want it. That people think they have a right to an author's ideas and thoughts and creations rather than simply appreciating how kind it is for someone to be sharing these things with us. I'm so sorry that you and many of the other creators on here have to put up with such horribly entitled people.
I don't want to keep harping on the ai discourse, but it's very disheartening to see this trend of using ai to replace artists. I think I've mentioned before but I tried using the c/ai thing for about 2 days before I started this blog and it was just not good. The ai can't contribute new ideas to a story, it can't remember what's already been said, it can't riff, I found no redeeming qualities to its abilities. All in all it left me going, "Fuck this I can do a better job just writing fic" when I hadn't written fic in 4 years.
I think there's an aspect of entitlement, but I think there's also an aspect of just... never having experienced the real thing. I view a lot of the c/ai shit as tiktok teens who have never role played before giving it a try with the worst possible partner. The people that really fight against the anti-ai crowd are people that just don't appreciate the effort that goes into art, and don't see art as anything but a consumable. It feels a lot like the 1984 "book machine" that just churned out slop for the mass market consumer and was run by people who didn't even read.
Idk I think being an anti-recast BJD collector, I see a lot of the same arguments for ai that I've heard about recasts and it always boils down to "well I want it now and my desires should come first" which just.... grow up. Interact with human people I am begging you.
Anyway this is all over the place, but yeah it's in my pinned now right up top that I hate ai. Please don't send me pro-ai asks I am just gonna start blocking.
