When I was in my twenties, before the internet was very useful as a reference tool, I painstakingly built myself a collection of how-to reference books: car engine and house repair, knitting techniques, knot-tying, basic cookery... An assortment of topics that I found useful to have at hand.
By the time I got into my forties, that reference shelf was looking rather obsolete. Even foolish! Why had I sunk all that energy into building it? Not that the knowledge on it was outdated, per se, but all information was on the internet nowadays, and often easier to find there, or in more detail, than I could get from one of my reference books. Why, when I was living paycheck to paycheck, had I spent all that money on reference books?
But now I find myself turning to my reference shelf again. Because suddenly the internet is drowning in AI-generated gibberish, and it's no longer easy to find basic how-to information anymore. I wade through webpages and webpages of unreliable AI-crap trying to find a solid answer to a simple question, and finally, in frustration, go consult my reference shelf. Because maybe my books only have a bare-bones and twenty-year-old answer to my question, but by god, it's on-point and accurate.

Hi,
It’s your friendly neighbor fanfic author here. In the light of this apparent new trend of people feeding unfinished fics to AI to get an “ending,” and some people even talking about “blanket permissions,” let me just say this:
I EXPLICITLY FORBID ANYONE TO FEED MY FICS TO AI. DUDE, THAT IS ABOUT THE LEAST RESPECTFUL THING YOU CAN DO. IF YOU DO IT, SHALL YOU BE EXCOMMUNICATED FROM YOUR FANDOM AND WALK ON LEGOS BAREFOOT TILL THE END OF DAYS.
That is my anti-permission.
Thank you for your attention.

AI should not be a tool for creative writing.
AI should not be a tool for creative writing.
AI should not be a tool for creative writing!
a writing competition i was going to participate in again this year has announced that they now allow AI generated content to be submitted
their reasoning being that "we couldn't ban it even if we wanted to, every writer already uses it anyway"
"Every writer"?
come on

What really gets me is that AI has so many very legitimate applications that don't involve cutting humans out of the equation to avoid paying them-- things like differentiating between types of pastries, or identifying early-stage cancer cells, or telling wild animals apart without chipping or marking them for more effective tracking.
Like-- can you imagine? Being able to block a meme? Even if it's image-based, or untagged, or doesn't use a very specific pattern of words that can be added to filter lists? Or actually, effectively using AI to block things like gore, rather than outsourcing that work to the Global South?
Of course, that's not glitzy and shiny, so it doesn't look good to investors.

not pro ai or anything, just curious to know what you think. What is your argument against AI making the art process more accessible to people who can't draw.
Generative AI doesn't make the process of creating art easier or more accessible, it just does the process for you. It's not going to make you an artist. You feeding it complicated prompts doesn't change that. You'd be doing exactly the same thing if you commissioned someone, telling the artist you hired what you want them to make and giving feedback until you got the result you wanted. This is just an automated version of doing that. Kind of like how a calculator can make life easier if you struggle with math but you can't really claim to have math skills if you can't solve even a basic equation without it. And I'll be blunt, I don't really care that much if some random person is using it to make portraits of their OCs or something trivial like that. I think it's a bigger issue when corporations use it to cut back on human labor on a large scale. The reason I don't think it's a good tool for people who want to be artists has more to do with this: If you have an interest in being any kind of a skilled artist you have to actually develop the skill for yourself. If you're invested in the quality of what YOU make then you do need to practice and study. AI may get you results you can't achieve on your own but if you actually want to develop skills then you need to do the labor and make art. No one starts out good at it, some people have better instincts or more of an innate talent but every artist who's work you admire has spent some time studying and most, if not all, of them have drawn outside of their comfort zones, hit walls, experienced burnout, been discouraged and for every 1 good piece they show you there are 10 failures and unfinished WIPS behind it. Art is WORK. Even if you love it, even if you are good at it. And that work is not for everyone. No amount of shortcuts, tools, or supplements can make a competent artist of someone who is fundamentally disinterested in the labor of art. And not everyone is going to be able to learn how to draw well. Just like some people will never be good singers or some will never be good athletes. It's not a moral failing or an indication of laziness to not be good at something. But Gen AI cannot give you what you don't have. It's just a shortcut for hiring someone else to do what you can't.

I was talking to my assistant manager this week who said someone on our team is having difficulty writing emails with empathy. So he told her to use AI.
I stared at him and asked if he really told someone to use AI to create empathy.
A pigeon couldn't pretend to give a crap.
A good rule of thumb for AI is "would you trust a trained pigeon to do this?"
"We trained a pigeon to recognise cancerous cell clusters and somehow they're really good at it" okay great, that's something that could plausibly be a thing.
"We trained a pigeon to recognise good CV:s and left it in charge of sorting through all our job applications" uh perhaps consider not doing that.

I think a lot of what pro-AI people are really wanting is stuff that already exists but they don't know it's out there like
can't format a work email? templates
don't know how to write a resume? templates
writing a thank you card or a condolences card or a wedding invitation? templates templates templates
not sure how to format your citations in MLA or whatever format? citationmachine.net
summary of something you're reading for school/work? cliffsnotes.com
recipe based on ingredients in your fridge? whatsintherefrigerator.com
there's a million more like, guys, we don't need AI, we never needed generative AI

being robotkin or anything adjacent does not give you an excuse to be pro-ai. being techum or anything adjacent does not give you an excuse to be pro-ai. being neurodivergent does not give you an excuse to be pro-ai. i cannot believe that has to be said.

The Glaze Team at University of Chicago is conducting a survey which evaluates the ability of artists and software to distinguish between AI generated images and human made artwork
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Survey link here!
spread the word!
EDIT: As some users have already pointed out in the tags, opening the images in new tabs to zoom in will reveal whether they're real or AI generated in the URL. Proceed with caution. If you accidentally spoiled yourself just say you've seen the image before and move on to a new one.
EDIT 2: Reblogs have been disabled as the survey has ended.

Hello, I recently read your post about Ai and I wanted to know your opinion on this
My brother likes reading and writing, its something he always loved
But sometimes when he is tired and does not have the energy to write a new story from 0 or find a new story to read he likes to write a story prompt (short or small depending of his inspiration) and use a AI to generate a story for him to read
He never posted any of the AI stories and he always deletes them after reading
So, is it wrong to use it if no one ever knows?
I think your brother should consider what he actually likes about reading and writing, or if he actually likes them at all, because he's doing himself a huge disservice by engaging with AI-generated content.
The "wrongness" about using AI isn't that other people know you're doing it, it's about the way it absolutely flattens the human experience and art into something non-human and without soul or passion to it, the fact that it plagiarises both written and visual work that many people have put blood sweat and tears into, and perhaps most crucially, it's about its unbelievably harmful effects on the environment.
If you're "too tired" to write a story, then sorry to break it to you, but you simply do not want to write the story. I can empathise with the frustration of writer's block because I often very badly want to write but I'm busy, or I don't have any ideas, or I'm not in the right headspace, or whatever. But at the end of the day, I want to write a story because I'm a writer, and I enjoy writing. If I ask the AI to write the story for me, then I've not written the story.
So what is the point of that? Would you ask an AI to eat your favourite food for you? Would you ask it to go on holidays for you?
If you enjoy reading, what is the point of reading something that wasn't even written by a person? Stories are built of people's experiences and imaginations and emotions and all of the complexities of being human, and an AI can't recreate any of that. It's empty, it's antithetical to every part of what creating art means, and the less people engage with art, the more we lose of ourselves and our ability to build connections with one another and the world we share.
