Kinktober, Day 1 - Dirty Talk

So I'm not posting the actual stories since...uh...hellllooo spoilers for my novel since I'm focusing on characters from it in these shorts, but I figure it might be helpful for me to do a bit of word vomitting about the prompts and the warm up I'm doing in prep for NaNo 2023.

Today's prompt was "Dirty Talk." It's actually one I hadn't been able to think of an idea for prior to it being pulled as the prompt, but then I realized one of my previous ideas would actually dovetail into this prompt really nicely.

So, I ran with it. Basically, the premise was what would happen if our lovely boy Faysal lost his voice, and how Ash would respond as it returned - because of course Faysal could - and would - weaponize that shit against him. And of course, as it is kinktober, we know it ends well for both of them ;)

A pretty solid start to the month, I would say!

And unrelated to kinktober- I am up to the final chapter of Hidden Report's third draft! Hopefully I'll be wrapping that up soon and able to take a break from it, so I can focus on this month's writing and preparing to write the novel's eventual sequel for NaNoWriMo this year!

Mid July WIP Update!

Man, I haven’t updated in forever.  I suck lol  

Anyway!  I’m up to chapter fourteen of the third draft currently for Hidden Report.  I’m taking it a bit slower at this point since I have two readers currently working on the beginning chapters, and I don’t really want to go into draft four without their feedback. 

So, why not use the time to take draft three slow?  I was hoping to have it published by November, but we’ll see how likely that is to occur.  If it isn’t, I’ll just end up shelving it until December since I’ll be focusing firmly on NaNoWriMo and the second book in November. It’ll likely get backburnered somewhat in October as well, since I’m going to be doing a lot of warm up writing for Kinktober to prepare for NaNo.  

I’m actually really pleased with how it’s coming along.  I’m working on incorporating some more internal details for both Ash and Faysal since some of that inner dialogue has been missing across the board and has been feedback I’ve received multiple times.

I’m also still chipping away at Beloved.  I need to post the next scene to AO3, but I want to do some more editing and adding to it before I do. The editing I’m doing to the novel is making me think I should do the same to Beloved and my other accompanying short stories for HR.

The cover is also coming along nicely.  I’m still going back and forth with my amazing artist, and the progress it is making is fantastic!  I just worked out the font the title will be in, and we’ve figured out the lighting for the cover illustration.

I also have been working on my art.  You can see here one of my experiments since I recently bought Clip Studio Paint and have been trying to learn how to use it, and this cute illustration came out of that effort.  I quite like it, rough as it is in places.

I think this describes half of my novel lol. This is an excerpt from the third draft of Hidden Report - and I know it’ll be getting a bit of an overhaul in the fourth draft, so ya’ll are seeing it before its final form!

Tenya gazed back at him, brow furrowed in thought. As her forehead smoothed out again, a gentle smile stretched her mouth. “Faysal is nothing like Touma,” she said, shrugging, “You’re just getting into your own head again. Just enjoy making out with your guy, eh?”

“…why are you so certain?” Ash asked, cocking his head to the side, “You’ve never met him.”

“First, he actually said sorry for saying something shitty. And apparently meant it.” Tenya started ticking numbers off on her fingers as she spoke, eyes rolled up to stare at the ceiling. “He bought you dinner at a place that probably bankrupted him, second. Third, got you a really nice gift for, let’s be serious, no real actual reason. Do I need to go on?”

At the questioning look he gave her, Tenya made a hopeless motion with her hands. “Touma never did that shit when you were actually dating, let alone before. If this is how Faysal is when there’s no guarantee of getting anything out of it, I can only imagine what the idiot is like in a relationship,” she clarified.

There was a moment of silence before he nodded. 

“…He’s very sweet,” Ash agreed.

“And you’re very in love with him,” Tenya teased.

Hey, writers.

You are not morally superior to tradpub authors because you go indie. You are not morally superior to indie writers because you go self-pub. You are not morally superior to self-pub writers because you go trad. There is no means of publishing that completely removes you from a system designed to devour its own young, just different means of being eaten.

I am a tradpub author. This means I get paid rarely, by corporations that will take any excuse they can find not to pay me at all. It also means my books are not dependent on my having the personal executive function to design them, format them, commission cover art, and post them for sale. There is so much effort in self-pub. I have sold books to indie presses. I experienced most of the same issues I did in tradpub, just magnified, and with big buckets of guilt poured over any complaints, because suddenly I wasn't asking a big corporation for my money, I was asking Susan, who had bills and a sick cat and needed a new roof.

Tradpub is the way to go if you don't have the skills/energy/function to do all the work yourself. Indie is the way if you're willing to give up some control in order to talk to Susan instead of AuthorBot #87. Self-pub is the way to go if you want to know everything is done the way you want it.

Please stop trying to make the way someone publishes into a moral judgement. We're all just trying to survive here.

Hello, everyone new and old, to the Announcement post for the upcoming Writeblr Summerfest! While it will be another month until the main site @writeblrsummerfest will get its update, I’ll be drumming up the excitement for it over here! As is the case every year, we have some old favorites coming back, some recent changes being expanded on, and a whole new set of fun to visit!

Due to a theme-vote held earlier in the year, we’ll be taking a visit to a haunted house this year! As we explore the haunted house and unravel the mysteries within, we’ll encounter writing/moodboard prompts, character questions, new ask games, and so much more!

But wait!

Last year, there were two new additions to the Summerfest: goodie bags and a writeblr wide scavenger hunt! Not only will both of these be coming back this year, but we’re also going to, due to popular demand, include a digital goodiebag, in case you live somewhere that the Summerfest can’t ship to!

Old favorites, like both the free and the pay-to-enter contest will be getting revamps this year in rules, and in the method that they’re run!

And even more amazing, we’re adding two new optional ways to take part to the Summerfest!

This year, there will be a running story to pair with the daily prompts and postings. This story will function like an overarching writing prompt that you can choose to take part in – and to pair with it, we’re going to be having a guest artist selling blind-bag adoptables designed just for the ‘exploring a haunted house’ setting!

More information on all of these events, others, will be coming to you soon! Don’t forget to mark your calendars – the Summerfest begins on August 1st!

July is disability pride month, Disabled people are at risk of falling below the poverty line especially and i'd love to help those who are published get paid this month if i can, so...

Let's do the same thing but with Disability Pride Month!!!

I'll start:

Hello, I'm Anna, I'm an Autistic and ADHD author! Here are my canonically disabled characters in books that will come out in like 50 years because I'm a slow writer:

(I noticed most of these are mental disabilities and disorders, probably because that's where most of my personal experience is, BUT i do have quite a few physical disabilities in there, and there's also quite a bit of intersectionality <333)

Prince Kaye (FSF series): Kaye has OCD! He's also mixed latino and bisexual <3 very sweet scrawny peacemaker prince born to a family of warlords <3

Captain Cassandra (FSF series): Cassandra is mute due to trading her voice and tail for human legs, and partially deaf due to an explosion on the seas during a battle. Due to losing her tail for human legs, she also experiences chronic pain in her feet (the original curse of every step feeling like walking on knives if you will). She's also plus sized, pansexual, and gets a pirate girlfriend

Erica (FSF series): Erica is an amputee pirate with a peg leg. She's also lesbian, polynesian, plus sized, and Cassandra's hopeless romantic pirate girlfriend.

Princess Hestia (FSF series): Hestia has an anxiety disorder! She's also plus sized, South Asian mixed (like her brother), and falls in love with a shy blonde bookworm trans boi named Elliot

Raven (FSF series): Raven is Autistic! He's a morally gray knight charged with being the personal bodyguard of a reckless princess. He's so Latino and bisexual <3

Princess Sapphire (FSF series): Sapphire has ADHD! She's the reckless adventure seeking and impulsive princess that Raven has to protect. She's also a redhead, and demisexual <3

Triveya (FSF series): Triveya is autistic and adhd! She's the resident wizard and magic expert in the cast of FSF, and is a little bit feral with a bubbly and nerdy personality

Kylee (TCIO series): Kylee is autistic and non speaking! She's a superhero with super speed and invisibility powers, and she's the youngest of the team while also being a mischievous and outgoing ball of sunshine

Bryson (TCIO series): Bryson is diabetic! I'm still developing his character so i haven't figured out which type he is yet (leaning towards type 2). He's the superhero team medic with healing powers (can't heal himself or emotional injuries with said powers), and he's also a black guy and the token straight of the team that's on thin ice

Chase (TCIO series): Chase has OCD, a bipolar mood disorder, and chronic depression and anxiety to go with it! He's the tech guy on the team of superheroes, and doesn't have any supernatural abilities, but he's really good with computers and tech. He's cynical and sarcastic (because of the ableism he's experienced in the past) but secretly does care, and he's also Romani American and Jewish!

Corie (Galaxy Des. series): Corie is a cyborg and has prosthetic limbs! She has a prosthetic eye, arm, and leg. The eye does come with a small interface and her arm does have a laser gun attachment. She built and repairs all of her robot parts herself, and is a highly feared and valuable assassin in the galactic underworld. She's also mixed brown and is AroAce!

NOVA (Galaxy Des. series): Nova is epileptic! She is an android who was scrapped due to malfunction, and became a smuggler who is good at her trade. Due to faulty wiring she's epileptic. She's a cynical and grumpy android who accidentally falls in love with a loveable human lesbian rogue. She's bisexual and has shiny chrome skin with cyan lighting in the cracks.

Pandora (Galaxy Des. series): Pandora is a part-time wheelchair user, autistic and adhd, and tourettic! He is a biologist that formerly did morally questionable work for the galactic government, and now does that same work in the criminal underworld and sells it to the highest bidder. She also uses he/she pronouns, is mixed brown, and pansexual!

Ethel (unnamed witchy wip): Ethel has one eye and PTSD! She's a witch in a world where magic has just been outlawed, and a witch hunting cult has been hired by the new king and queen to hunt down and eradicate witches. She's also AroAce and very underdeveloped because this is a backburner wip.

By request of the discord! Here’s the smut thesaurus I’ve been building to help me write. It’s even longer now because I included some extra words from The Ultimate Guide to Writing Smut Fic by  QuinnAnderson on AO3. 

How many words are there for “penis” and “thrust” (that aren’t completely cringey)? Here are all the ones I’ve gathered so far 😂

Tips to help you describe love and attraction in your novel:

1. Show, don't tell: Instead of directly stating that a character is in love or attracted to another, demonstrate their emotions through their actions, thoughts, and interactions. Describe their reactions, gestures, and expressions to convey the depth of their feelings.

Example: "Her heart raced as he entered the room, a smile spreading across her face that she couldn't contain. In that moment, she knew she was helplessly in love.

2. Engage the senses: Use sensory details to immerse readers in the experience of love and attraction. Describe the sights, sounds, scents, tastes, and textures associated with the characters and their interactions to create a rich and immersive atmosphere.

Example: "As they danced, the soft melody filled the air, intertwining with the sound of their laughter. She caught a whiff of his cologne, a mix of warmth and familiarity that sent a shiver down her spine. The touch of his hand against hers was electric, igniting a flame of desire she couldn't ignore."

3. Use metaphor and symbolism: Employ metaphorical language and symbolism to convey the intensity and depth of love and attraction. Compare the characters to natural elements, use imagery to describe their connection, or associate their emotions with colors, seasons, or other evocative symbols.
