She'd seen the countless of princes pass by for hours, days on end, trying their luck for the sake of the king. She'd been watching, waiting, holding the edge of her apron every time a new prince came near, praying, that this would be the day for change. But alas, day after day, week after week, prince after prince, the princess stayed aslumber.
As the latest prince, some tough guy from across the lake leaned in this time she just watched with disgust, no way that this would be the one to change it all. And she was correct. He even tried to shake her awake, causing the nearby guards to step closer and shout a warning.
As the people left the chamber to leave the princess to her slumber again, she stepped closer from the shadows of the room. Every day it was the same, the quiet murmur from the other room a hum while she worked.
She'd give her fresh sheets, she'd open the window for fresh air, dusting off the room before she'd come back to the princess. A soft, damp cloth used to clean off any trace a prince left behind. She'd sit beside her on the edge of the bed, letting the fabric gently brush past her face and lips.
But today was different.
She felt sorry for the princess.
So as she brushed the princesses lips for a final time and she got up to leave, she leaned in. Placing a soft and tender kiss upon the princesses forehead, an apology, a gesture of goodwill that she may soon find her prince that could break the spell.
As she leaned back to wipe her own kiss away, her eyes widened as two dark, doe eyes, sleepy, yet quite alert stared back at her.
"Oh.. oh no, I didn't.."
The princess smiled, a chuckle as she looked back at the concerned and panicked blue eyes that stared back at her.
"I will.. fetch the.."
She couldn't keep her eyes of the princess. She'd watched her so many times, and she'd wondered for years what those eyes would look like, and now.. she couldn't look away.
A hand found hers as the princess sat up, turning towards her and she found herself unable to move away.
"Stay.. I'd like to look at you a little longer."
Her voice sang, where she'd imagened the princesses voice would be raspy from the slumber, it sounded as if she'd never slept at all.
"Would you tell me your name?"
She hesitated, having forgotten her own name as she looked upon the princess, her mouth slightly ajar in what had just happened until someone shouted it for her.
"Philippa, what's going on he-.."
The steward halted mid step and bowed.
"Oh! Princess.. my.. my apologies, we didn't know you.. Philippa, please move out of the way."
His steps quickened as he sprinted back towards the door, calling out to all those still in the next room.
"She has awakened! The princess is awake!"
She hadn't looked away, trapped and enamoured beneath the princesses gaze. She stepped back, taking her hand away from the woman she'd just awakened as she cleared her throat.
"I.. should go."
The princess looked confused, frowning as she attempted to get up and move after her as the doors to the room opened and the chamber erupted in a loud cheer. The king had his arms wide, joyous tears filling his eyes as he made his way over to his daughter.
"Oh Aurora! At last! We've found someone suitable for you! Come forward now."
Philippa watched as they brought forth the smug looking prince, already two drinks in he swayed in his step as he approached the princess with a drink in hand.
"My lady! A toast to your good health and our union!"
He raised his cup to the rest of the room, a drunken grin on his lips. He wasn't ugly, per se, quite a charming looking man, tall and lean with scruffy, black hair and a custom, white fitted suit that looked quite good on him.
But the princess spoke loudly, at his back.
"He did not wake me."
The king turned to her.
"Dear, he came all this way, he kissed you a mere ten minutes ago, it must be him."
The princess shook her head, looking at the man with slightly disgust.
"Good for him, but no. That is not who I will marry. It's him."
She pointed at Philippa, standing in the shadows, head bowed down as a servant would in a room amongst royals. Philippa could feel the eyes of the room descend upon her. She did not look like your average Lady.
She had her hair cut short, to keep it from getting in the way of working, too lazy to keep up with the latest ribbons and braids.
Her posture was straight, but her flat chest and her preference for wearing pants often had people thinking she was a boy. She did not mind, she liked the ambiguous way people talked about her, she did not feel a particular way to one or the other.
But there is one thing she was not.
The king scoffed and laughed.
"Darling, that's no prince.. This is a prince.."
He grabbed onto the man who'd just lowered his drink and was staring at Philippa in disgust.
"..this is the man who woke you and will marry you."
The princess stepped closer to her father, looking the prince up and down.
"I will not marry this reeking goat of a man and he is definitely not the one I would even consider waking up to."
The prince laid a hand upon his chest, as if struck by a sword by her insult, scoffing.
"Pfah! And I'd be glad not to marry such an insolent woman! Goodday!"
He tossed his drink into the hands of the nearest servant before storming off, not bothered one bit by the king who tried to stop him.
"Please sir.. she didn't.."
He turned back to his daughter.
"Aurora, darling, this must be a mistake.."
The princess lifted her dress as she stepped down and away from the altar she'd been asleep on for so many years.
"No mistake at all."
She approached Philippa, gently taking her by the hands as she met her gaze once more. Philippa hesitated, before meeting those beautiful brown eyes again, a blush made its way to her cheeks as the princesses warm and soft hands held onto her calloused ones.
"This is my prince."
The Princess can only be awoken from her slumber by her true love, but countless Princes have failed to do so. When a poor townsman is successful, the royals try to dispose of the man and convince the Princess that one of the Princes is her true love.
