Supernatural recs [Gen, other pairings etc]
Supernatural recs - Part 2 Gen and other pairings
Accountability by dodger_winslow, PG Karl Buckman had been driving a big rig since he was eighteen, and he’d never even had so much as a speeding ticket until now. For the life of him, he didn’t know how this could have happened, how things could have gone so horribly wrong that he’d have no memory of the accident at all, only of waking up on his knees in the wet grass, staring at the mangled wreck of a ’67 black Impala and the bloody bodies inside.
It's gorgeous and horrible and oh gods, the premise, the idea. What a horribly wonderful story.
Not what had happened, Karl reminded himself. What he had done. It was important to keep that distinction fresh in his head, to be vigilant it didn’t become just a thing beyond his control, like hitting black ice on a dark night, or getting jammed up in a multi-rig melee. Because it wasn’t that. It was something else. It was something he’d done that almost cost a kid his life, almost cost a father his son, almost cost a boy his brother.
They were obviously a close family, and it tore Karl up inside to think he could have been their undoing.
Five Families Connor Was Not Magically Squeezed Into After His Real Vampire Dad Slit His Throat by annakovsky (PG) Connor Bluth had discovered his superpowers just after he had dropped his brother George Michael off at George Michael's girlfriend's house on Friday night. Hasn't it always been everyones dream to see Connor living life as the youngest brother in Supernatural, or one of the family in Arrested Development, another Summer, living life in The OC or being one more Weasley? Well if you haven't you really must start thinking of it now, actually, scrath that, go read about it now. It was one of the stranger nights of Connor's life. After that, he started keeping an eye out for any guys with messed up faces, and after he'd caught a few of them in alleys drinking people's blood, he had pretty much figured out that they were vampires, and that he, for some reason, was really good at killing them. That's when he started putting up flyers for his vampire killing detective agency. "Who you gonna call?" they said, and it made pretty good money, as a part time thing.

Supernatural recs [Dean/Casiel]
Supernatural recs - Part 1 Dean & Casiel
The Girlfriend Experience by rageprufrock, NC-17, 15393 words While it's not like Dean hasn't had a couple of truly regrettable hit-and-runs in his sexual history, this is probably the saddest fucking thing that has ever happened to him. Clearly everyone must have read this already because it's so amazing it literally calls to you. But if somehow you have not then please for the love of god go read it now because it's great. Dean and Cas were amazing, in-character but also changed enough to adapt to the situation. Sam was written excellently as well, he was just fun really but a fun voice of reason which is normally needed when it comes to Cas and Dean getting together. This fic was just hot and steamy and beautiful. Two idiots coming together and Sam the cheering squad, just wanting his big brother to man up and get with Cas. "Burgers also cost money," Castiel says in between bites, mopping ketchup off his face. "Which I don't have and do not know how to obtain." Dean snorts. "Great, we're your sugar daddies — that is shit sad, Cas." "Oh, Jesus," Sam mutters, like he just cannot believe his brother is talking about this in front of his prom date. "What's a sugar daddy?" Cas asks, and looking hopeful, he opens his mouth again. Dean cuts in, saying: "No more burgers for you. And you don't need to know about sugar daddies."
Easy Now, With My Heart by mcpadalackles, NC-17, 49663 recs Dean Winchester is a kindergarten teacher. Castiel Milton is a writer slash works-in-a-coffee-shop. He also happens to be the extremely hot one-night stand that Dean never intended to see again other than in his own fantasies (he’s classy like that). But suddenly Cas is everywhere and Dean is convinced that Fate is out to get him. And maybe they do this thing backwards, but that doesn’t have to mean they can’t make it in the end, right? This is amazing, and awesome and I just could not stop reading. Hell, Dean and Castiel in this was both kind of insane and really co-dependent - but to be fair that is realatively in character - and half the time they were looking it felt like waiting for two trains to crash but it was still so good. They're not making life easy for each other but you could feel the want and the need and the love and it was as engaging as hell. Turns out though, he was totally right. Castiel does love the place, or at least he pretends to for Dean's sake. They start off with more beer, but that quickly escalates to shots (and the dude's fucking lethal at shots—it takes at least half a dozen before he declares that he's 'starting to feel something') and then they end up nursing two of Ellen's finest whiskeys and laughing hysterically about… well, he forgets but it sure was funny at the time. Castiel's shirt is open at the neck now, his blue tie a lost cause, and Dean's pretty sure he doesn't look much better himself. And then, suddenly, and he's really not sure how it happened or who initiated it, but suddenly they're pressed together in their corner booth and they're kissing. Like full on desperate tongue and teeth action, and it tastes like booze and bar nuts but is so fucking good, and if Dean had any doubts before he certainly doesn't now. Castiel presses into him hard, forcing him to lean backwards in his seat and he has to grab the table to stop himself from toppling over.
F**k You! by deans1911, R, 24459 words Castiel Novak, the general manager of a failing restaurant, and Dean Winchester, his stubborn head chef, hate each other’s guts. It’s up to celebrity Chef Balthazar Roche to keep them from running Garrison 16 into the ground and killing one another in the process. So, okay, this is probably one of my favourite AU's I've read. It's a really nice fleshed out universe, the characters are great and it's real. In the sense that it got it sad moments, and its bad, but it also has it happy and silly and hot. And it all evens out really well. You do sort of want to bang Cas and Dean's heads together half the time but honestly that was probably part of the fun. Dean is grinning like an idiot, if for no other reason than the stunningly ridiculous visual he now has of Cas shaking his ass for money. He lets Cas turn his hand over and run his thumb over the stitches through the plastic bag. There’s that crease between Cas’s eyebrows that means he’s about to say something that’s going to make them both uncomfortable. “For what it’s worth, I actually do think of you as my boyfriend,” he mutters, voice gone rough and soft in a way that instantly has Dean’s stomach flip-flopping. When he peeks up at Dean from under the messy fringe of his bangs, flattened to his forehead from sea water, Dean wants to kiss him senseless or run screaming--he isn’t sure which is the better option.
The First Year by cloudyjenn, PG-13, 7730 words When Castiel leaves after Lucifer's defeat, all he asks is that Dean wait for him. So that's exactly what Dean does. Ohh this fic, it breaks my heart and then after that comes back round to jump on it. Which is weird because it is not exactly that angsty or even that depressing, I think it's more the idea of the fic and the message behind it. And what it said about Dean and his life and how damn hard he loves. It's gorgeous and everything is worth it in the end. "Do you want to get out of here?" Amber asked a moment later. "I can't," Dean said without thought. "I'm waiting."
The (Mostly Accidental) Courtship of Dean Winchester by tuesday, PG-13, 11171 words Angelic marriage rites were never intended to go quite like this. When are wedding/bonding fics not fun? The answer is they're always fun. I really enjoyed Dean's voice in this, I mean it is essentially a Dean that is happy which is not exactly in-character but his character in this fic was still great and engaging. Cas was great too but clearly I was pretty drawn to Dean in this. I'm more of a fun and engaging then angstful and depressing kind of fic gal. And this fitted the brief pretty well. "What the hell?" Dean had said, and, "Where have you been?" and, like Cas was the boy blocking his calls and Dean was three steps away from turning stalker, God help him, "Why didn't you answer me the first three times?" "I was busy," Castiel said. And really, Dean should have asked this first, but, "Why are you naked?"
*The Way the War was Won by deans1911, R, 37258 words Dean and Cas are buddy cops faking a marriage for the benefits and tax breaks. Except for the part where Dean’s sort of actually in love with his partner and doesn’t realize it yet. Aww cute and sweet and long. I like that we sort of skip the angsty section of their relationship and skip straight to the finally getting their shit together part. Like there's still some angst, but not enough to hurt and it is such a well written story just even though we're just hearing about their history you still feel like you know their whole story. Fun and amazing read, I loved it. “Are you actually gay or just Cas-sexual?” she quips, grinning. Dean wants to shoot her, but he doubts that Cas would approve of brain matter on their new carpet. Sam needs to upgrade. Ruby is officially a demon. “Not really any of your business,” he mutters. Ruby purrs beside him and wraps her arms around her knees. ”Oh, I don’t know, Dean. I just think it’s really fucked up of you to try to keep him from seeing people if you’re never actually going to seal the deal.” Low blow. This bitch is way too observant for her own good. Probably why she’s CIA. ”Whatever,” he snarls, but she struck a chord and he knows it.
So Glad We Made It by Annie D (scaramouche), PG-13, 16421 words At twelve years old, Dean makes a friend, who becomes his best friend, who will eventually become the love of his life. Really sweet and engaging fic, and it pretty perfectly catches that feeling of being scared of taking that step because who knows what happens when you do? When Dean does take that step it works out pretty awesome, with the right amount of angst and confusion along the way. Really good take on Dean, and while Castiel didn't always act or do what I expected that is probably more in character than him suddenly swooning and falling all over Dean. But all in all they were both great and fun and the fic was just a really good read. Later, without fail, Cas plucks Dean out from the mess and drags him to the Impala outside. (On loan from Dad, because Cas’ solemn oath to behave actually means something in their house.) Dean only stirs awake when he finds himself being tucked into bed, Cas a dark shadow hovering over him. Dean catches Cas’ arms, holds him there. He squints up at Cas, who is watching him, patient as a statue. “Always you,” Dean says stupidly. “Of course, Dean,” Cas replies, though he can’t have any idea what Dean’s talking about.

Shameless [Ian/Mickey]
Part 1 - mix of fic lengths 2x fic recs
The Runaway Race by ronandhermy, R, 40,029 words During an investigation by Child Protective Services it is revealed that Ian is not Frank Gallagher's son but Clayton Gallagher's. Ian goes to live with his new found family but it's like they say, you can take the kid out of the Southside but you can't take the Southside out of the kid. This is so engaging and so well written, it's just great. I loved this concept and how it still had the characters as we know and love them but turned everything upside down at the same time. Not only was watching Ian and Mickey relationship develop awesome but also watching Ian with his 'other' family is great too. Also nothing, nothing, beats Mickey's relationship with Ian new family. Mickey let him go and Ian ended up curling in on himself on the floor. After a long silence Ian said, “Monica’s back. Again. Except this time she wants to kidnap Liam.” And then he was laughing, laughing so hard he started to cry, and then he was just sobbing into his hands while lying on Mickey’s dirty floor. “They didn’t want me,” Ian gasped out as he continued to sob. It wasn’t manly and it wasn't pleasant. It was ugly and dark and full of a childhood filled with broken promises. “Fuck,” Mickey muttered under his breath. Then Ian could hear him moving around before sitting down next to him. A flick of a match and then Ian smelled the familiar odor of pot. “Here,” Mickey said, thrusting the blunt into Ian’s face, “Smoke this.”
The Halfway House by MintSauce, R, 30209 words After his mum took off, Ian sort of expected he'd wind up in foster care. What he didn't expect was to meet a sort of dirty boy called Mickey Milkovich there. This fic is all sorts of awesome. Like damn. Both Ian and Mickey are written so well and feel so in-character even with the differences the fic brings. And I liked this Ian, might even be a tad more fond of him then canon Ian, but that is probably because we get to see inside this Ian's head more. Their relationship is just as fucked up as ever but it's them and it works and I loved how even when there's problems you can still feel the commitment. And you could see these boys being together forever. Ian nodded to stop himself from imagining a world without Mickey in it with him. He didn't want to think of a world like that. He thought that was the minute he first felt himself falling for Mickey Milkovich, he didn't know why, it just was. Not even the way Mickey spat on the ground and scratched his balls before walking off could put him off, Ian figured that meant he had pretty strange taste. And not only because Mickey was a boy.

Intended, Arthur/Merlin
Intended by new_kate, R, 16653 words "Kids have crushes on teachers all the time. It's perfectly normal."
Wow, so this was gorgeous. The concept is a little bit icky... (student/teacher, age difference) which is odd because it's not like I've avoided those tropes before but I suppose those fics were often written for the kinks and this fic feels more real. Or something like that. It's just written beautifully and Arthur is so charming (while also being an arse) and Merlin is great (while making you want to shake him), and together they are perfect. And it's just nice to read a fic about two characters who seems made for each other and watching them get there as well.
And the humour in the fic is this odd quirky sort of humour which I adore, so added plus!
Merlin offered his hand, and they shook on it solemnly. Arthur let go and curled his fingers into his palm, as if trying to protect the trace of Merlin's touch on his skin. He exhaled and flushed, staring down at his right hand.
"Oh come on, kid, don't," said Merlin. "You look like you're never going to wash that hand again."
"Of course I'm going to wash it," Arthur said and got up stiffly. "When it gets dirty. Excuse me, I need to go to the bathroom."
He walked away, nonchalantly holding his folded blazer in front of himself.
"Positive thoughts, Merlin," Merlin muttered to himself. "Not disturbing thoughts of a kid wanking over you in the school toilet."

CHOSEN ONE: Reconciling Lily's Eyes (Snape/Harry)
Reconciling Lily's Eyes by persepolis130, NC-17, 52175 words Had Harry known "bonding" with his former professor would lead him to three different countries, a hastily-planned wedding and his pants around his ankles in Snape's sitting room, he wouldn't have quit his day job. Or…maybe he would've… What it's like to fall in love with someone you absolutely cannot stand, who happens to still be in love with your mum. Well now, this is just outstanding. It's like everything I never knew I wanted. Harry is so dense but underneath he's kind and loving and just trying to find what is right and good for him. And Snape, gods he's an ass but he's perfect at it, and he's so far from perfect and good but he's trying in the only way he knows to be better. And they are ridiculously perfect together. And this is just so hilarious as well, in character and funny. It's, well I just adore it. However, fair warning, I found the beginning a tad off-putting, it just seemed so left-field I was there wondering, is this my type of story? But it is. God it is. Just stick with it. "Potter?" he asks, giving him an appraising look. "Harry Potter?" The way he pronounces it makes the t's sound strangely like d's. Harry swallows. "Ah..." "You must excuse his slowness, Director," Snape says with a tilt of his chin, "he was hexed on the head as a child. Suffered obvious brain damage. Very tragic, I'm sure."

Sherlock BBC: I Don't Know What More to Ask For, Sherlock/John
I Don't Know What More to Ask For by halotolerant, PG-13, 4813 words 'And now that, once more, he does not have John Watson the situation has arguably only returned – after six hundred and two days of abnormality – to a resting state.' Oh my heart. This fic is just a punch to the heart. Sherlock is just, he's lost and alone and missing John, yearning for John, and he doesn't understand how to deal with it and what to do. This fic does a wonderful job at showing the pain of missing someone, of needing someone, and of not quite understanding all the emotions or reasons why. Also the flashback from the Hounds episode was one of the best things ever. John’s breathing was levelling out, his arms going down. Slowly, the muscles in his face relaxed from grimace to concern. “Leaving everything else aside – and there is a lot of everything else, by the way – I don’t want to have sex with someone who doesn’t think they’ll enjoy it.” “I don’t know if I could enjoy sex. I like the idea of having another kind of hold on you.” John gaped at him.

Sherlock BBC: Stay (Sherlock/John)
Stay by esterbrook, PG-13, 7393 words Retirement wasn't quite what they'd expected. For one thing, they hadn't been in the same room for two years. This was just utterly charming. A retirement fic that was nice and good and not depressing nearly the whole time - to be fair I have a ridiculous fear of retirements fics because normally someone dies or its completely depressing and I've only found a few that do it right -for me at least. And this is one of those ones that does it right. some things seemed out of character, Sherlock moving and leaving John, but then explanations were given and I was like that works, that is a great explanation because I can see them both being that stupid. It was just lovely, and a wonderful blend of just a touch angsty but mostly hopeful, and I enjoy hopeful a lot. "And London misses you." "As do you." Anyone else would have heard it as a simple statement, but John caught the tiny shift in inflection, the infinitesimal lift at the end, the way the pale eyes flickered away and back. "Of course I do, you idiot. Nothing's ever quite right without you."

Sherlock BBC: Playing the Game, Sherlock/John
Playing the game by KeelieThompson1, R, 5512 words As a vampire, John often despairs of Sherlock Holmes. Especially when he makes a new fledgling. This world is astounding and captivating and I was so completely hooked the entire time I was reading, and after I finished I wanted more. And I still want more. I there are two more chapters to go and the wait is already killing me. It is great, this amazing world of vampires, and Sherlock and John, and the others. But it always comes back to the two of them, and watching this world and lore and their relationship unravel and reveal is going to be excellent fun. "You're his favourite." John looked up from his tea. "I beg your pardon?" "They all say it," Lestrade said slowly. "They say he chased you through Europe once." "He did not chase me through Europe. He chased a hunter through Europe. The hunter happened to be after me." John rolled his eyes. "Why is everyone so intent on romanticising him?"

Sherlock BBC: Lead me to the Truth, Sherlock/John
Lead me to the Truth by Lavellington, PG, 8946 words
John didn’t mind following two steps behind: two steps behind Sherlock was still miles ahead of everyone else. Wow, this fic is brilliant. Completely captivating from the first moment, from the first segment. This telling of the characters is one of my favourites, from the steady of John to the extreme of Sherlock, I loved each moment of them. And the game with the skull has to be one of my favourite things ever. Excellent story, excellent characters, just excellent. “It’s your birthday,” he announced, placing a tattered linen shopping bag on the kitchen table. John blinked, unsure whether “Thank you” was an overly optimistic response to that statement. Perhaps Sherlock thought he was dim enough that he’d forgotten. He risked it anyway. “Thank you,” he said, wiping toast crumbs off his jumper. Sherlock smiled and gestured grandly at the bag. “You’re welcome,” he replied, magnanimously. John stared at the bag, then back at Sherlock, then back at the bag. Then he looked back at Sherlock. Just to be sure. “My God, did you finally buy milk?” http://archiveofourown.org/works/176500

Sherlock BBC: Just Browsing, Sherlock/John
Just Browsing by bendingsignpost, R, 3869 words “I’m a good kisser,” John says. Another eye roll. “Everyone thinks that.” “Everyone? Blimey, someone’s been kissing and telling. Had no idea I was so famous.” This is perfect! Hot and sexy and funny and hot. It's really really hot is the point essentially. AU re-telling of Sherlock and John's first meeting and it's much less PG then the show. Nicely in-character and a good balance of humour to even out the pure sex of it. Cheekbones doesn’t take it. “Do you have a reason beyond my face?” “There’s the rest of you, too,” John says bluntly. “And I don’t see many people speed-reading about snake venom. You’re a bit of a posh prat, but I’m mostly inured to that.” He smiles after, so polite that it comes out on the other side. For a moment, Cheekbones weighs him. “...You can stay.” “I can also go for coffee,” John offers. “Provided you came too, I mean.”

Sherlock BBC: Torn Stitches, John/Sherlock
Torn Stitches by AggressiveWhenStartled, R, 35645 words The trick to being with Sherlock Holmes, John mused, was to always keep in mind that he wouldn’t actually murder you and wear your skin as a suit. “I can see the appeal,” Sherlock was murmuring to him over the peeled body, much to the horror of any yarders in earshot. “I often find it surprisingly difficult to get inside your head. It might be cathartic to do in a more literal sense.” John snorted. “With your curls? Our killer didn’t even clean this poor bugger out properly, just pulled him on gore and all. You’d be picking bits of me out of your hair for weeks afterwards.” This is awesome! Sequel to Loosed Reins, which started an exploration of their relationship and characters and this explores them even more. It's engaging and charming and so much fun. Again the characters are not as we know them but they have the essence you're used to and they are just captivating. You need to know what is going to happen next and watching the boys grow together is great, because they are such strong character that are amazing together. And I really enjoy fics that don't shy away from the fact that John and Sherlock are both weird and dangerous and pretty damn odd, and it's fun but they are not normal and they can come off pretty creepy because of it. “Then I am going to order some food, because I am at the end of my rope tonight, you’ve poisoned the refrigerator, I am going to eat something, and it won’t be whatever you’ve left in the crisper.” Sherlock’s mouth quirked up, and John rolled his eyes. “Oh,” Sherlock purred, leaning back in his chair, “I wouldn’t mind that.” “I am going to eat some food,” John clarified virtuously. Sherlock gave an exaggerated sigh. “Oh, dull,” he decided. “But I suppose. If you must.”

Sherlock BBC: The Norwood Love Builders, Sherlock/John
The Norwood Love Builders by flawedamythyst, R, 47798 words Sherlock and John go undercover to solve the murder of Joanna Oldacre, but things are complicated by the many feelings John has been repressing in the wake of Sherlock's faked death and return. Charming, long and engaging. This was just fun and enjoyable to read, I was clicking excitedly on each next chapter, on the edge of my seat, to read more. This fic deals excellently with John's grief and how it doesn't go away when Sherlock returns but becomes something else, something that Sherlock doesn't know know to deal with. The story isn't just about getting them together it about getting them back, back to what they once were and trying to save what was lost when Sherlock jumped. Also has one of my favourite themes of Sherlock adoring John, which is in most fics but this one does it particularly nicely. So to end, this was great and definitely well worth a read. It was half an hour before Sherlock spoke again. “Will you tell me what was wrong with you earlier?” John looked up to find that Sherlock had shifted his gaze to John, and was giving him the intense look that meant he was trying to read his mind. “It was nothing,” he said. Sherlock's gaze only grew stronger. “Don't insult my intelligence, John. You've been in an odd mood all day. What is it?” John looked at him for a long moment. There was no point in reminding him of the date, especially not now the day was mostly over. What would be the point in complaining about it when he had spent eleven months desperate to have an evening like this one?

Sherlock BBC: Child's Play, Gen
Child's Play by bendingsignpost, PG, 4324 words “You’ve been shopping, but not for groceries. You don’t have much in the way of funds, so something cheap, but not an impulse purchase—you’re much too disciplined for that. Something-” John puts down the plastic bag on the coffee table. A palpable shift occurs in the air. “...You bought a puzzle from a charity shop,” Sherlock states. This is a lovely and charming getting-to-know-you fic. Really enjoyable and watching their friendship develop and grow is so well done and appealing. You are brought along with them on the ride. “Fantastic,” John says when Sherlock stops for breath. “That is—That is amazing.” The corner of Sherlock’s mouth pulls in something caught between smile and frown, not quite related to a sneer. John can make neither head nor tails of it. “We’ll see,” Sherlock answers before swishing away into his second dramatic exit of the afternoon. John feels as if he’s come up lacking, but he’s not sure how. He looks at his half-filled room and wonders.

Sherlock BBC: Disco Stick, Sherlock/John
Disco Stick by Ishmael, R, 4941 words For a prompt requesting Polefessional Sherlock. John meets Sherlock at Clara's hen night in a strip club. “This is the part where you proposition me for sex.” This is hot and fun and adorable. John is confused and excellent, and Sherlock is sexy and brilliant. It's a pretty amazing match. Worth reading for the prompt alone. The current three dancers leave the stage, the music and lighting shift for the next act. The stage is bathed in blue, deep bass greeting him as he stalks out to the beat. He’s lithe and pale compared to the bulkier bronzed men out previously, high cheekbones and curly dark hair. Clad only in tight, short black shorts and some of the most ridiculous heels John has ever seen, John can’t help but admire the confidence he exudes.
