So You Think You Can't Come up with a Good Title for Your Writing
by Kiara Lee
You pull up to your favorite burger joint. You’ve been craving a big, juicy, cheesy cheeseburger with all the “fixins” for all the days long. You’re at the drive-thru window and you notice the menu has changed. Now, your cheeseburger choices are as follows:
Cheeseburger A
Cheeseburger B
The Fully Loaded, Gigantic, Extra Cheesy Cheeseburger
At this point, your selection is quite obvious. “The Fully Loaded, Gigantic, Extra Cheesy Cheeseburger” it is.
And at this point, you’re probably reading this thinking, “Cheeseburgers, titling your writing, what does one have to do with the other?”
To answer that question, think about what would make you choose “The Fully Loaded, Gigantic, Extra Cheesy Cheeseburger” in the first place. In a nutshell, you would choose it because the name indicates what to expect on the cheeseburger. The name is descriptive, vivid and telling, so customers know something about what they’re about to eat – before they eat it.
Turning in that third response paper and titling it “Response Paper #3” is like telling your professor “Eat this sandwich. I’m not telling you what’s on it, just eat it blindly.” No professor really wants that (unless he or she specifically asks you to give a paper a certain title).
Next time you’re writing a paper, take its title into serious consideration. Instead of “Radioactive Paper,” try “How Love and Science are Connected in Lauren Redniss’ Radioactive.” If you’re writing about educational policy, don’t settle with “My Take on Educational Policy” for your title. Something like “Making Mexican-American History More Visible in Rural Virginia Schools” may be a little more specific and appealing.
The title of your work is just as important as the content. Keep this in mind, and whatever you do, don’t ever force-feed your professor a “Cheeseburger A” ever, ever again.
