Enjoying some time out with my little one exploring #birminghamuk and there is some really lovely typography around the city centre. I LOVE creativity. And as a designer with three boys, it’s a privilege to see theirs develop in weird and wonderful ways. My youngest (8) brought this home last night, one of a few, but it struck me - perhaps like the stick man in the drawing - how he has that ability to convert a story into a sketch. Not as a feat of drawing precision honing years of practice, but just as an expression of what’s in his head to share his thoughts with us. And I didn’t teach him - it is just something within him. I find that particularly fascinating… how did we create him to have those traits, whist the middle one is completely different and will rather spend hours improving his time solving the rubrics cube and my eldest is writing song lyrics and draws rap artist portraits? How did that happen?!? I’m not posting much at the moment but there’s a reason. When I’m not working on my Mac on brand identities and designs, I’m elbow deep in swatch books for papers, thank you @gfsmithpapers for being amazingly helpful, print foils, thank you @a14print and @teampurely for sharing your print and finishing expertise, and Pantone books... less thankful to how Pantone integrates with CC at the moment but that’s another story… And thank you to @butlerconsults for introducing me to the client. I love my work, very lucky, even when it’s tight timings, juggling different projects and deadlines, I really enjoy being creatively pushed to come up with something the client can be proud of. Started to learn Spanish with the boys - clearly nobody teaches German in the Midlands 😆 sorry family! So there’s another language with false friends and language traps. Leer for instance - ‘empty’ in German, ‘reading’ in Spanish 😂 who’d have guessed! For branding, language is kind of the key for me. Even before a logo comes into existence, the message has to be defined, clear and unmistakable. Love love love mushroom hunting. It’s always been a tradition in my family. Working on a new brand strategy or brand identity design, this is my key word. Imagine. It takes time, it takes research and a lot of ‘nope, that’s not gonna work.’ But after exploring literally hundreds of thoughts or visualisations, at some point the magic happens and something is emerging that’s worth sharing with the client. Then it’s the wait. What if they had imagined something different? But that’s part of #creativelife and the curiosity and slight anxiety has never ever gone away for me, even after doing this for more than two decades. The fascinating thing for me is that a brand really can be anything, with your own understanding and belief in it being the crucial factor. So don’t limit yourself to the obvious. It’s been one of those weeks, and reflecting on all the little obstacles at work and at home, what’s got me through it is to laugh about myself, the situation and life in general. Many quotes come to mind, starting with “life happens when you make other plans” going to “life’s a bitch and then you die.” So we might as well have a chuckle and a giggle and not take everything so seriously, including ourselves.
