every programmer I know who is over-reliant on AI sucks at programming, but new programmers relying purely on external sources to do their programming is not at all a new phenomenon. Every online programmer group has been "LOL does anyone else only copy code from StackOverflow and never write code themselves??" for years before tools like ChatGPT or Copilot became somewhat competent at programming. Half of the people I knew in CS undergrad copied code off of geeksforgeeks and never actually learned how to program and struggled immensely with assignments where they weren't able to copy code from somewhere else. When i was a kid first learning how to program by making little games in Unity i struggled to code anything myself because I was too reliant on tutorials. AI is not making people worse at programming, it's just that new programmers who don't feel confident in their skills tend to look for external help more than they should and thus never learn to solve problems with code, and AI makes it slightly easier to do that. Experienced programmers who actually know how to code can benefit from having an AI take care of boilerplate code and other busy work, but it can be harmful for newer programmers if they become dependent on it and neglect to build up those core programming skills.
