Here's something a little different! A quick digital study from the aquarium yesterday made on procreate. I stayed away from lines and sketching, just approaching it like I would a traditional painting. I had the reference on my phone so I didn't use procreate to "color pick" because I wanted to practice training my eye to adress the palette! Decided to try out that #eyememe thing I've see floating around... it certainly made me realize that 80% of the eyes I render are animal or inhuman/supernatural. I had to go digging a bit to find (mostly) normal finished human eyes! A quick video of me re-tracing the drawing for my underpainting. Sometimes the hardest part of being an artist is having to decide when to throw away your progress and start again. I had traced this image before and started painting the background. I had used a lot of expensive paint on the background but I hated the way it was coming out and the paper had started to degrade from all of the brushing. I got it to a point where it was passable, but I had to decide whether I wanted to spend many hours on a painting where I would hate the background and I wouldn't be able to fix it, or start again and make a new painting, count my losses, and move on to make something that I was actually happy with. A quick messy self portrait from the other day. I'm glad I got to do some painting right before the move because I probably wont have time again all week. Its been a long time since I've done portraits and I've never done them in gouache so I wanted to play around a bit. I also rarely illustrate expressions so i wanted to practice something different.there are things i would change but my time got cut a little short. The finished sketch from this afternoon. I started reading Color and Light by @jamesgurneyart to try and help me conquer tricky colors. Feels like and uphill battle right now but I know if I stick with it things will eventually click! This still life is trickier than it looks because you are dealing both with reflections and white/off white in shadow. I think when i started out painting years ago my values were very desaturated and monochromatic. Now i feel like im over compensating with slightly over chromatic colors. One day I will find the balence! Its hard for me to let go of being fixed on making things as close to life as possible; cleaning up edges, rendering and defining. I decided to try something new today. I've been really inspired by @nathanfowkesart and his brilliant landscape paintings, especially the 20 stroke landscape pieces. My gouache work is usually really tight so i decided to try a more impressionistic approach. I think you can see me lossening up more from the first to the second sketch.
