Daily Focus; Mafe
To follow the basics, this particular story (which is called Through The Veil by the way,) wouldn't be complete without the other species i thing y'all will enjoy a whole lot, Vampires!
Similarly to the Wolshi, with their three (technically four) sub-spieces, Mafe also have their own species tree. In the same fever dream and roughly the same night, i used the same naming method that i did for the Wolshi to give Vampires their own unique name as well!
I wanted to focus this particular naming convention on what it was Vampires fed on rather than any kind of physical transformation. While Wolshi are super visible with their transformations and the powers and abilities they have (outside of, of course, their additional Affinities or Mage Abilities) Mafe are the exact opposite.
As kind of obvious, the word Mafe, is derived from the words 'Magic Fed', or "Magic Feeder". Drinking blood does play a part in this, but it's tied a little more to whether or not the person a Mafe is feeding on is Magic born, and Non-magic Born. Much like the words their name is derived from, Mafe (outside of basic sustenance of food and water) feed on magic as a whole. Usually, at least with Magic Born (Mabo), this is easily done with a small nip to the skin to break it, then devouring the magic that runs alongside the veins.
Tumblr media
With Noma (Non-magic Born), however, the magic is within the blood itself. Meaning they don't have the veins of magic within their body. This isn't to say they don't have magic, its more that there isn't enough magic within the body. This, for Mafe, is compensated by drinking the blood itself.
However, drinking magic, or blood, is not a mandatory action in the long run. There are present day supplements that Mafe can take to avoid more situation where Noma's get it into their heads that they're nothing by hungry, sexy, attractive monsters. (Though they are often at least two of the four descriptors, never all four at once.) there is one particular Mafe Family that Through The Veil will likely focus on and talk often about; which will be the Morgan family, particularly the youngest Cyrus.
Now, with the biology stuff out of the way, onto the magic stuff!
Mafe were designed and intended to be subtle and hidden. This, however, does not make them any less dangerous than Wolshi. Arguably, this makes them more so, as often you won't know they're using their species powers. Although they have the same basic source of powers, being the time of day they were born-- whether the AM or PM, dictates how some of their powers manifest. In fact, the powers between Wolfshi and Mafe actually show that at some point in their ancestry, they shared a common origin, much like Giants and Dragons do. Where that connection is covers a lot of the scholarly debate in Aerotion, but through testing and science, and no small amount of magic, Aerotion can at least admit that the two definitely came from the same origin. (Even if the Progenitor states that while it wasn't a surprise, he genuinely has no idea how it happened himself.)
Focusing back to the magic, like previously mentioned, some of the powers and abilities outside of the obvious Affinities tied to the individual person are heavily tied to the time of day. Unlike, however, the fiery sauna and illusion of the Suolshi, Lumafee (The AM born Mafe) cover a much more nuclear option. Literally.
Lumafee are, most often, the ones that remind the world that the sun, while a bright, ball of burning gas in the sky, also has radiation. Lumafee cover that hidden danger of the day. Often reaching temperatures that should melt their body, but only distort and destroy the world around them. When interacting with an angry Lumafee, the effects they have on the environment as well as the people around them will be seen for years, even generations afterwards. To keep with the vampiric side of things, Lumafee control radiation and heat in nearly all its aspects, which includes removing all sources of heat from a location, leaving nothing but cold emptiness in its wake.
Gemafee, on the other hand, (Gelid [subzero] magic feeder and pronounced "Gi Ma Fae") on the other hand, don't deal in long lasting effects like the Lumafee. They has more sudden, without warning effect on the world around them. Much like their name suggest, they deal with a much more immediate and sudden danger whether slowly chilling the area around them until every step they take leaves ice and brittle material in their wake, or immediately causing a flash freeze much like nitroglycerine does, Gemafee abilities are sharp, sudden, and devastating. They can drop the temperature around them, and within their bodies to levels that no person can survive, as most often the coldest parts of the day are the evenings. Much like how their cousins the Lumafee can remove the heat from anything (or anyone), Gemafee can remove the cold, causing an instant boil from whatever they're affect.
With the powers out of the way, much like the Wolshi, Mafe are also able to change someone from one thing to another. Though unlike their cousins who do so with a single bite, Mafe have to put others through a ritual in order to awaken the dormant genes within someone. Luckily for them, due to their pension for feeding on magic, they’re able to identify those with dormant genes just by a smell or taste, depending on if they’re feeding on the person or not. The ritual itself is mostly harmless; meant to be done during the hours of when the person was born, the closer to the exact time, the more potent the powers and transformation, or so it's believed.
Something that ought to be mentioned about the two types (Wolshi and Mafe specifically) is that they can't actually change each other. If a Wolshi tries to infect any type of Mafe (whether Lumafee, Gemafe, or Essedrin [Essence Drinkers for those ritually turned]) nothing happens. While the pair are able to turn those that have dormant DNA (or MGA; Magic Genome Array) and it's implied that the same person can be turned by both, there are zero accounts of any kind of Mafe-Wolshi Hybrids in existence. While a few experiments have been done, it's usually resulted in the infected sticking to whichever of the two species turned them first. Even an attempt at turning the same subject at once has no effect, as it's resulted in a hospital visit and a medical stay to battle infections.
This, finally, brings us to the last part of the Mafe tree, it's roots.
Much like Wolshi, it's theorized that there is a Progenitor lurking around somewhere. Who they are, and what they can do is only theorized. Much like to Prowolshi, it's expected that these progenitors, or Blyss as they coined term has become, (a combination word of Bloody Abyss) would like be rage filled, explosive, bloodthirsty temperament. A big part of this comes from a legend about one particular Mafe of Heat and Frost that rampaged a huge chunk of a city single handedly, leaving the streets to literally run red with blood and magic to ooze into puddles and leave nothing but decimation in his or her wake. The odd thing about it, is that there’s no record of this ever happening, nor does the city in which is told in legend exist. That’s not to say it didn’t, but all legends have to stem from some kind of truth, after all.
Same with Miles and Olive, yes the Morgan Family will have their own post, and yes there will be art of Cyrus, and his grandparents, along with eventually a focus post about Cyrus himself.

The Thing about Magic
The thing about magic is that, at the end of the day, in Aerotion, you can literally, from a creators stand point, be anything you want, and do anything you want. The word is designed to be as open concept and magic free as possible. Want to turn into a megazord turtle whenever you’re in danger or whenever you feel like it? No problem! Want to have an entire tomb of spells and magic at your disposal? Also totally possible, have fun living your cottage core witch in the woods dream.
The entire concept of magic as a whole when I created it for the world that anyone could do anything, and still be able to have something completely unique to them without any issues at the end of the day. It’s meant to be a world of imagination, where experience and practice makes your power stronger because you can utilize it to your advantage, for my MC, what makes her dangerous is that she has no control. She is just as much a danger to herself as she is others, and on her own she’s fairly weak, rather than being overpowered. It takes years of cultivation and practice to be on the same level as her father is, and at the end of the day she is FAR behind everyone else because of how sheltered and stifled she was,
Magical freedom, as a concept, is amazing and life altering. But the implication of just how out of balance, wrong, and the immense dismorphia that comes from having magic stripped from you can lead to insanity…
At least, I think it would.

Daily Focus: Wolshi
Let’s start basic, and likely the one I think folks will enjoy the most; Werewolves! So following the 'basic' and easy side; why did i decide to call them 'Wolshi’? After a lovely fever dream, I decided that the best thing for me to do for the story was make up 'scientific' names to match the ones everyone knows. For this, i chose to pick a set of words i felt fit a general, overarching category for each sector and then give it a name with the first two or three letters. an so, Werewolf, or Wolf Shifter, became Wolshi. Now specifically, there are two (technically 4 but we'll get to that) kinds of werewolves in the world of RTM. The first and the ones we will see the most, are the Wolshi. They hold the same standard as most werewolves we know today, complete with wolf man form, full wolf (super-sized for everyone's enjoyment), and the standard bipedal furry form aside from the human form. Depending on when they're born, they will either glow yellow or blue to indicate the AM or PM.
This also has corresponding abilities dealing with both AM or PM, typically heavily based on both the Sun and Darkness side by side. The two subtypes of Wolshi are Suolshi, and Moolishi respectively (told ya we'd get to that mostly).
Obviously, each has their own corresponding powers, with Suolshi radiating an intense heat, and emitting light so brightly they are often mistake for the sun depending on their location, or some kind of flood light. The transformations often are shown to be triggered by the effect of a mirage in the desert, which leaves the desired form behind once those around them have finished rubbing their eyes. There is also the unspoken super heat and 'searing fang' ability many Suolshi presently call their attack.
Moolishi, on the other hand, are the opposite. Often a ripple of water like magic triggers their transformation, and the often the spectral, starry forms of any of the aforementioned options will take the place of the humanoid. Cold, often associated with the night, is the replacement of the sun for the Moolishi. which, now, brings us to the second type of Wolshi. Mawolshi. These are probably the most popular species of Wolshi to date, and often the ones that have been more widely accepted in Oblivion in comparison. While these Wolshi do not have any special abilities like their cousins the Suolshi, and Moolishi as far as having fire and ice based powers, they are able to infect other beings with the ability to transform as they do, leading some truth to the story that all 'Werewolves' can 'infect' the 'curse' of Lycanthropy with their bite. Though most often, it's closer to the idea of reawakening ancient Wolshi blood within the person who's being bitten. I wanted to build the idea that Wolshi, while being a genetic thing, is also something that can happen to a person, much like Mafee, who will have their own post eventually. I wanted there to be enough correspondence between the three-- technically four types of 'werewolves' that everyone knows. Hence, this creation.
Prowolshi, on the other hand, they're an entirely different beast all on their own.
In the world of RTM, originally there were only 3 types of Wolshi in total, which are the three we've gone into depths here. It wasn't until 26 years prior (again, in world), that the entire understanding of this species type was flipped on its head. This is where the Prowolshi, or 'Progenitor Wolf Shifters' come in.
As far as the world knows, most species can follow their bloodlines all the way back to a series of Progenitor races that started as the divide into what they are known as in present day. Progenitors will have their own personal post as a whole, but I shall leave you all with this last tidbit about the Werewolf Progenitors before i eventually get into the big Progenitor post.
There are exactly 2 Progenitor Wolshi in existence for the realm of Aerotion and Oblivion (what our 'modern day' would be), with no possibility of there being more, unless either member intends to have children/remarry and have more children.
Progenitor Wolshi are easily twice, if not three times the size of other Wolshi, and have the innate ability to shift between all four forms, and all three types at will. They have a stronger, more innate understanding of the forms, and the magic required to utilize them efficiently, and finally they are some of the most powerful Mages known to Aerotion. Miles Lovell, and his daughter Olive are the only two Progenitor Wolves left in present day Aerotion, and Oblivion.
And Yes, there will be art, and yes, Miles and Olive will have their own personal posts for y’all’s enjoyment.

Daily Focus; Study of Affinities
The study of magic has always been something people have obsessed over in the realm of Roads To Magic, or RTM as i've affectionately been calling it. Even before the Cataclysm split the planet into three (Which i will get to the Cataclysm another day). The original understanding was that Magic, at its core, was sustained by balance. Equal parts Light and Dark, with the huge variety of different magics in the middle being the transition from one to the other.
With the Cataclysm shattering the world, and taking all of their information with it, the newly appointed Aerotion High Council were quick to come to the understand that the balance their world once had no long existed. Thus, began the seemingly endless Study Of Affinities.
Though previously mentioned before, there have been hundreds of thousands of studies to try and figure out the foundation and bases of magic. Only one theory so far has been able avoid being disproven.
Miles Lovell, often referred to as the Progenitor of the Wolshi alongside his daughter Olive Lovell, has written an alarming paper based on the theory that Magic, since the Cataclysm, is based off of Chaos.
His proof, is simply that with the belief in this foundation, he has been able to achieve many things that most mages are incapable of doing without the understand that Magic, in and of itself, isn't meant to be understood. Whether the rest of the Aerotion Society can get on board with idea, remains to be seen.
So far, magic has been able to be split into a series of vague categories that can be described in a few words at a time. Although most often the specifics of the power are far more complicated, this is a rough categorization they've managed to build thus far.
Creation Affinities
This one can easily be mistaken for Elemental Manipulation, but in reality its far more. Complicated than that. Creation Affinities are more. Popular than most would think, as it often covers a wide range of abilities that requires the user to be creating something from nothing. The extent of the "something" is, most often, strange, unusual, and typically an object. Though this isn't always the case.
Manipulation Affinities
This one is also easily mistaken, as most people tend to assume its the ability to manipulate materials and elements. In reality, its far, far different.
Manipulation Affinities instead focus on a type of control and manipulation of the mind and body, the most well known example being Wyatt Morgan, with his affinity to manipulate an aura around himself that forces all within it to fear him, with no exceptions. Much of the Morgan family has similar abilities, often ranging to different emotions, however.
This said, Manipulation Affinities are not tied to the Morgan Family, and a large range of manipulation affinities often cover both physical, mental, and emotional states. Whether or not this category affinities can go as far as spiritual and even to manipulating the affinities themselves, remains to be seen.
Elemental Affinities
Finally, we come to elemental affinities. This category often covers the largest range of diverse affinities to date, as many users often cover not only the four basic elements (being earth, air, fire, and water) but also, in light of the last three hundred years, the scientific table as well.
While these affinities is rare to come across in general, never before have scientists and researchers come across two people with the same affinity, though there are umbrella categories for each of the basic elements and what their combinations are.
Draconic Affinities
This one is the newest Affinity discovered to date. It is so rare, that there are only 2 person in existence with this affinity. The limitations of this affinity are still under review, and as of now, they are considered one of the most powerful people in Aerotion Earth.
Old Magic
The Inheritance - before the war there used to be a thread of magic that allowed people on their deathbeds to name an inheritor of their power, often either boosting the original Affinity or creating a brand new one when the 2 magics combine. The one giving the affinity must be dying for this magic to work though. This is used to explain why there's such a massive diversity of affinities an magics.

Daily Focus: Magic; how's it work?
Magic is something that the realm of Aerotion Earth is still learning. Its vast, mysterious, and dangerous without training. Hundreds of Affinity Users and Mages work tirelessly to document all the types of magic, but each and every day new types and combinations are being discovered.
Magic, however, is not infinite. Each person has a well of their own magic, and must train at this collection of magic in order to strengthen it and gain more.
Its because of this need to train constantly and build at it, that Combination Magic is so dangerous. While anyone can combine their affinities to create a new one, unless practiced regularly most combination attempts end in hospitalizations, and in some cases death. Combination magic has been deemed something to be used with EXTEREME caution, and under healer supervision to ensure all parties survive the ordeal
First magic type: Assimilation Affinity
Assimilation Affinity used to be called "The Sponge Effect". Similar to Mages, Assimilation Affinity magic users have an affinity for all forms of magic, but takes the additional step of being able to copy it from other people at the level of power the copy-ee has trained themselves at. They cannot preform magic on their own and must Assimilate magic from someone else first.
Assimilation Affinity, much like most Affinities, are based on bloodlines and cannot be learned, as it was once called "Absent Affinity" because of their reliance of on other people to perform magic.
Second Magic Type: Mages
Mages, outside of Assimilation Affinity Users, are the most powerful magic users in the three realms. Once called "Infinite Affinity Users", Mages have the ability to use all forms of magic. Most Mages often choose to Specialize in particular types of magic, excelling at a particular skill that allows them to be exponential at one and amazing at the rest with enough time and energy. That said, Unlike Assimilation Affinity, Mages cannot combine the different types of magic together to create new types of magic, as they are unable to store different sources of magic and have to swap between ones when they wish to use a different type of Magic. (edited)
Third Magic Type: Affinity Users
Everyone is an Affinity user in Aerotion Earth. That being said, Affinity Users, unlike Mages and Assimilation Affinities, have access to only one type of magic that is unique to each person.
That said, Affinity Users are able to combine their magic with others, allowing them create a new type of magic that will be unique to that combination of Affinities. This often takes a massive toll on the Affinity Users, however, and it is heavily recommended that any Combo Affinities are done with healers and Mages nearby encase something goes wrong

Phrases of the World
I had a funkie little angle for Roads To Magic that i wanted to try out; and that was mostly making new words and terms as identifiers for the different parts (and technically species) of the world. To Prevent burnout, I'm intending to only focus on the ones that will be spoken about and mentioned within the book I'm working on now, which will essentially look like this! [colloquial term] = ["location specific" term]
Part of this is because i want to solidify the mass difference between the three worlds that Roads To Magic will be exploring. The first one (and the focus of this particular post) will be covering some of the colloquial or 'slang' terms verse the ones that are written in history books, with the pronunciations for them as well! My favorites so far (and the only ones that I have at this current moment) are as follows!
Werewolf = Wolshi [Wool-She]
Vampire = Mafee [Ma Fee]
Non-Magic Born = NoMa [No-ma]
Magic Born = Mabo [Ma-Bow]
Faerie = Minfle [Min-flea]
Shadow Demon/Creature = Shawal [Shae-Wall]
Dragons = Fimabo [Fee-ma-bow]
Giants/Titans = Gibroma [Gi-bro-Ma]
I'm gonna try and keep specific posts about each species tagged as both their colloquial term and the in-world specific ones! I'm really excited to share my knowledge with you all!
